  1. All the hair discussion makes me think of "Good Hair" a documentary by Chris Rock about black (women's) hair. (I'm bracketing the women because I think there MIGHT be a small section on black men but really it's mostly about the ladies.) It's probably not the definitive source on black hair but it's a pretty entertaining doc for anyone to watch.
  2. Super late to the party but just watched the episode. The final scene between Ward, Whitehall, and The Doctor was amazing -- I loved it. I'm also surprised because I had been assuming The Doctor was the "alien" but this episode strongly suggests to me that SkyeMommy is the "alien". So either a) The Doctor is a human and just crazy (acceptable), b) The Doctor is the "alien" and somehow assisted his human lover to regenerate and remain young (less acceptable), or c) they were both "alien" and Skye is, in fact, not human at all (acceptable). I agree with posters above who attribute Ward's fascination with Skye more to a psychotic-break induced obsession rather that actual love. He wants to be the "white knight" so he's fixated on the "damsel" -- clearly ruling out May as his object of obsession -- and Skye was closest at the time. Also, since he's known about her family history, he may have built up a larger narrative of rescuing her from SHIELD/Hydra control.
  3. THIS WOMAN IS 51 YEARS OLD!! FIFTY-ONE!! I cannot emphasize this enough -- THIS WOMAN IS FIFTY-ONE YEARS OLD!!
  4. The first time I heard the phrase "black don't crack" was Jennifer Lewis singing it Broadway-stylez on a late-night talkshow (I want to say original Arsenio?). Stupid and annoying? Yes. Realistic? Sadly, yes. I know couples who have been driven to the brink of divorce because the guy would or could not put up appropriate boundaries with his parents.
  5. Oh, Bow's definitely high-class, she'd be waiting for her chauffeured ride to the rendezvous.
  6. Hahaha!! That might be a bit dark for a family sitcom, though.
  7. Seriously! It's just so... not the Johnsons? I don't even know. Even if you juxtapose just a few of his life events -- starts in a poor, abusive home, launched to sudden wealth and a broken home where his mother shot his father in front of him, gets married at 22 and has five (four?) kids.... what?!?
  8. The only time I've ever eaten okra was in Bhindi Masala.
  9. I have no idea what the context was for that but it made me laugh out loud.
  10. I just rewatched The Winter Soldier and choose to believe that was a deliberate reference to Cap asking if anyone wanted to leave the elevator.
  11. Yes - her shame cigarettes referenced in The Apartment.
  12. As much as I loved the episode, I challenge the idea that knowing good food from terrible food is evidence of being spoiled. I understand nostalgia -- I still eat at some less-than-gourmet chains from time to time -- but I understand that the food isn't good, I'm surprised Andre would actually like Beef Plantation now. I mean, he must know what steak is meant to taste like by now, right?
  13. I did! It was pretty cute -- I was a little surprised that Jon wasn't interviewed.
  14. This podcast is 2 hours and 20 minutes long, I'm at 1h41 -- LISTEN TO THIS FUCKING PODCAST!!! This guy is FUCKING AMAZEBALLS!! (You will get to 1:41 and you'll be like, "oh, shit, I get why she posted that")
  15. Did John sit down with Tony Abbott? When?
  16. Strangely, just this morning, I saw an article in the commuter newspaper about this study. As others have mentioned, it may not work but the kids are doing it.
  17. True. Fortunately, to patients she would just be Dr. Johnson. (I am very suspicious of any doctor who allows patients to call them by their first name, like Dr. Bob or some such. You are my doctor, not my friend!)
  18. For no reason based in fact or evidence, I feel like ABC/Disney/Marvel are strong enough and committed enough to the MCU that, as long as they have strong fan support, the ratings aren't as important. Last year I felt nervous for the show because the audience was unimpressed and/or disappointed by it but now that momentum is building and people are excited about it, the nervousness is gone regardless of the ratings.
  19. Again, watching after the fact, I looooove the whole thing. Somehow I felt the buttons exchange between Jake & Terry was partially improvised -- and I love it.
  20. I have to admit, I have new respect for those soap actors for maintaining straight faces for soooooo long after she got hit by a flying salmon.
  21. Having spent some time in Africa, there is nothing funnier to me than the American perspective on "African cultural identity". This conversation is interesting to me because it's revealing my own unconscious bias on the name issue. Why should I think anything about the name LaQuisha? But I do have thoughts. I could defend my bias -- that name has no cultural significance and is more a triumph of systemically maintained ignorance than culture -- but really, it's not my place to judge and I should just let it go. But I do get angry with parents who treat names as a joke. LaQuisha isn't even that bad, in a world where parents have been allowed to name their children Apple, Pilot Inspektor, Audio Science, or Kal-El. (Not joking.) ETA: I stand corrected, LaQuisha may have a cultural significance -- several times removed from with unconfirmed associations to the Hebrew word "Kezia" meaning "cassia tree". However, no two sources provide the same origin or meaning.
  22. Shit, do I have to rewatch Coach Carter now?? ... maybe.
  23. This whole discussion made me think of The Poisoner's Handbook and the Radium Girls and generally the world prior to regulation. I feel like people really don't know why these laws were enacted and, therefore, don't appreciate them for the incredibly useful and important tools they are. Also, that book is super enjoyable.
  24. Wow, I'm impressed by the level of maturity in this forum. Even as a self-professed sane person, I felt a moment of irrational disappointment.
  25. Jacob = Jake
