  1. Watched episode 4, and I am so confused by Grace's storyline. When she mentioned that she liked Zig last block, I figured she was just trying to reject Zoe by picking the first guy in view. I've never gotten the "admiring my friend from afar" vibe from her and I can't imagine her betraying her friendship with Maya over a dude who's cheated on his last two girlfriends. Still, it was nice to have a plot for her where she didn't know everything. Free Tiny! I like Lola in small doses, but she was pretty obnoxious this past episode. Like chill, if you and Tiny break up you can download the app again. Zoe is always compelling.
  2. I appreciate that Degrassi is exploring other symptoms of depression, and are taking the time for Hunter's therapy outside of school, but there's still something that makes me uneasy about his redemption. I think it's from seeing too many of these mass shooters painted as sympathetic and misunderstood. All we've really seen of Hunter is that he's an internet troll who spews a lot of hateful things. But I'm willing to give this story a chance to learn more about mental health issues, which I think is really important. Zig has reached Dawson Leery levels of entitlement, and it's really irritating, because I feel like every season Zig has to step up and take responsibility for his actions only to forget about it the next season. I'm still convinced that Zoe will end up pregnant and that will be Zig's wake up call, but for now, I'm totally done with his bull shit. I just watched episode 3 as well, and while I find the racism story line to be completely frustrating (admit you were wrong and educate yourself, Frankie!) I think Frankie has grown up with the kind of privilege that makes her reaction completely believable. I also appreciate Shay's part of the story and how conflicted she is between the two sides. Reiya Downs talented, and I'm happy to see her get more material instead of the show relying solely on Sara Waisglass to hold up the Grade 10 class. I couldn't have cared less about the Grade 10s in the first half of the season, but I also really liked Yael's story. Sure there are huge initiatives for women in STEM programs, but it's still difficult to earn respect in the field, and I'm glad she didn't lose her integrity in the process. As for Tristan and Miles, the actors have a lot of chemistry, so I'm fine with the pairing, but wasn't Miles addicted to prescription meds like a week ago? His yo-yoing between boy scout and spoiled menace is so hard to follow.
  3. Shay's speech could have also used a reference to the Oomph Chat scandal too, maybe. Like I know she was trying to make it about her for once, and not about Frankie, but dammit, last time Frankie tried her hand at revenge she almost burned the school down (with a Miles assist.) It was nice to see Goldi on the team, but I was kind of surprised that she didn't see how insensitive the prank was. Last season she played as a "You're all problematic" tumblr analog, so I assumed that she would know better. I'm just imagining the sort of conversations Maya and Peter will have if he becomes her mentor. "And then Zoe started a facerange page with my head photoshopped on naked women's bodies..." "Righteous. She had to photoshop it though? That's lame. Why didn't she just get you drunk and convince you to flash her? I'd have mailed the video to the entire school!" "Wait. What?" "You're right. That's wrong. Maybe just sell it to pervs on the internet. That's how I won one of my high school girlfriends." But honestly, my first thought when Peter appeared was that Olivia Scriven wants off the show and being in Peter's orbit is the kiss of death for Degrassi ingenues. It's always nice to see a well done family plot on Degrassi since the show's been so saturated with shipping since Eli/Clare took off, but I find Hunter to be such a loathsome character that I can't get into the story let alone sympathize with him. Maybe Degrassi will surprise me though. At least Miles has told Mama Hollingsworth the truth so adults can be involved. I hate Ricardo Hoyos for making me like Zig. Zig cheats on his girlfriend, rightfully gets dumped, and instead of atoning for his shitty actions, starts flirting with the new girl and rubbing it in Maya's face. Like I get that Zig's character is 90% cool guy posturing, but damn. He sucks. But then at the window when he was all sheepish "You liked my photo." Damn your attractive face. That said, I'm glad Maya's most likely going to dump him again in another episode, because he deserves it.
  4. Ben reminded me a lot of my father in law, who is a retired widower and feels lost without the daily structure in his life, so I immediately connected with his journey and really felt for him. He did come across as the magically wise old guy near the end though. My husband and I were waiting for Anne Hathaway to offer him the CEO position, since he seemed to do everything better than her. I really liked Anne Hathaway's plot, but I hated the resolution from the cheating husband reveal onward. I felt like she was under enough pressure that the cheating just seemed cheap, especially since she immediately took him back. It also felt like, in the end, Jules lost all her agency and just did whatever Ben told her. I thought that Hathaway and De Niro had charming chemistry though, and I liked the film well enough.
  5. Personal life aside, it amazes me how much Amber Heard fails to make an impression. Looking at her filmography, I've probably seen a dozen of her movies, but don't recall her being in them (with the exception of Pineapple Express, maybe.) I feel like she's a duller version of Kristen Stewart.
  6. I would definitely classify the Mr Bunting sketch as low brow humor, but that didn't make it any less funny to me. Yes, low brow humor generally relies on shock and awe and punchlines that are on the grotesque side, but that doesn't mean they can't be done well. I thought the pacing for the Mr Bunting sketch worked well. Based on the tone you knew that something ridiculous was going to happen, it was just a matter of when, and the suspense peaked at the right time for me. But as someone stated before. Humor is subjective, and not everyone is going to laugh at every joke.
  7. I haven't gotten this emotional over a television show since Lost, and then I found out the guy who directed this episode also directed some of Lost's most gut wrenching episodes. Goddamn, that was a tough 10 minutes.
  8. I feel like the "Captain, My Captain" scene is iconic enough whether you've seen the film or not.
  9. I'm not a fan of Fred Armisen at all, but I love his friends. I'm sad that Bill Hader didn't show up, but I guess he doesn't have any summer movies/shows to promote (although I guess he's in the Angry Birds movie too.) I'm shocked that Kristen Wiig didn't show up, but not at all disappointed if it means we avoided a Garth and Kath bit. I usually hate when cast members purposely make the rest of the cast break (Jimmy and Horatio were the worst at this) but there's something about the way Jason Sudeikis does it that just really works. Like when he used to jump really intensely onto his desk in the scared straight bits, and in this case, when he ate the guac off the shoe and shouted "HEY!" As I was watching the Dead Poets sketch, I was sort of haunted by Fred Armisen's monologue where there was this long extended build up with no payoff. Then I noticed how prominent the fans were being framed in a lot of the shots, and then BAM, the punchline. I don't think I've laughed that hard at a sketch in a long time.
  10. I think in that case, they could have shown her using her innate Force sensitivity on Jakku, like inadvertently Jedi mind tricking a full portion for her haul, or using the force to reach a junked part that's just out of reach. I don't know, I feel like Rey was cheated out of that part of her journey. I find her to be a compelling and interesting character, but I understand the argument about her proficiency in the Force coming too easily. The flashback you gave is a good example, I just feel that a few more seeds could have been planted.
  11. I think Luke and Rey's powers were on the same special snowflake level, but I do agree with those who found Luke's road to discovery much more plausible than Rey's, because he had Obi Wan guiding him over several scenes, whereas Rey only had a brief scene with Maz Kanata. I think within the context of the film alone (I'm sure we'll learn more about Rey's past and abilities in the next two movies...) they could have taken more time to explain Rey's innate senses, instead of boiling it down to Maz telling her that she has the Force and knows how to use it.
  12. Agreed, especially since we just went through this "running down the clock-will they flip the switch" scene two weeks ago with Murphy. Speaking of which, Murphy is the series' MVP. I wouldn't be surprised if the series finale is everyone dead and him sitting on his throne as the King of cockroaches.
  13. I remember being shocked when I first looked her up after Mean Girls and saw she was born in 1976, and then suddenly it was 1978. She's got amazing genes, because she could still probably pass for 20's. There are definitely some actors who have stayed vaguely-28 for a really long time. Of course Armie Hammer has looked vaguely-28 for a decade now. I'd call him the male Margot Robbie in that regard. When she was on that Pan Am show, I figured she was Christina Ricci's age, she's just got a mature face.
  14. The Stark reunion was everything I've ever wanted. It was so nice, after all the horror these characters have been through, to see them sitting around the fire drinking and laughing and being happy, even if it's only for a little while. I've been so sick of everything coming up Ramsay, and it's great to see that the tides are finally turning. My only fear is that it's happening too soon, and with 2.5 seasons left, things are only going to go to hell again. Ramsay's ransom letter showed far too much confidence though. The Wildlings would probably follow Jon into battle no matter what, but way to make it personal for them. I'm sure that Yara and Theon will contribute some forces to the Stark's cause as well once they get the iron islands in order. Not going to lie, I caught up on some housework during the High Sparrow, Daario/Jorah's excellent adventure, and King's Landing scenes. At least it sounds like they're going to try some sort of coup against the High Sparrow, although it sounds destined for failure. And I agree, Dany's latest stunt was visually stunning, and I hope it leads to actual movement in her story again, because while Tyrion's negotiations triggered some interesting discussions about morality in politics and war, I want them to get to freaking Westeros already.
  15. I've been doing a series rewatch, and it makes the plot of #ButThat'sNoneOfMyBusiness kind of silly, because the girls are fighting for an extra washroom when literally, every scene we've ever seen in the girl's bathroom, it's been completely empty except for the character in the last stall who needs to overhear an important conversation.
  16. Jasper took the chip while Luna was being tortured. ALIE instructed her men to force feed him the chip and then the action switched over to the Luna fight, so we never actually saw him take it. I thought the same thing, but I think it was kind of telling when he mentioned what happened at Mount Weather, he didn't say her name. Then again, he could remember every casualties name and the way they died, but I'm guessing that's just ALIE's database trying to turn everyone against Clarke. That scene with Abbie and the noose was fucked up for network television.
  17. I think it was The Finest Hours.
  18. The way the Stark kids have powered through puberty, Baby Samwell still being a swaddled infant was starting to push credibility. I would love for HBO to do a prequel series, because I'm pretty much over all the current characters (the Starks excluded) and would rather watch an hour of Bran's visions each week.
  19. "No! Go back to Bran's story!" I found myself shouting for the first time ever. That sword fight was awesome, and present day is so wrought with corruption, it's fun to see a time on the show when honor meant something, even though that time was guilty of betrayal too. Ugh the Rickon reveal. Ugh. It's like D&D were like, "Okay, so you don't like watching Sansa get beat and tortured, we get it. We'll just do it with Rickon instead. Sound good?" No. Not at all. The Boltons have enough Stark blood on their hands. Ramsay has been winning for long enough. Time for the tables to turn. Please! I am on board with Umber pulling a long con, but I'm skeptical. That head seemed awfully small to be a dire wolf. Which, on a final note, STOP KILLING GODDAMN DIRE WOLVES! My fragile heart can't take it. And come on Faceless Man, let a girl go assassinate Ramsay Bolton and let her brother have his house back. I'm with Jon Snow. I'm out! (You know, until next week.)
  20. I caught this on HBO last night too, and am really curious about the movie that ended up on the cutting room floor, because this movie was just so soulless. It took them an hour to get their powers in a 90 minute movie. The dialogue was cringeworthingly clunky. The FF movies of the 00's may not have been good, but at least they were fun. What a waste of an otherwise decent cast.
  21. Looks like there'll be a Degrassi reunion in the next block of episodes. From the promo picture it looks like Emma still has a wedding ring, so I guess they're still going with that, unless she and Spinner got a quickie divorce and she's onto the next one. Based on how anguished the writers and actors seemed to be over that decision, I wouldn't be surprised if she's actually married to Sean now.

    The Star Wars Saga

I haven't seen any of Alden Ehrenreich's work, but I've only heard good things about him (and the fact that Spielberg discovered him had me convinced he would get the role all along.) I don't think I've ever been disappointed by a Lord/Miller production before either, so I'm cautiously optimistic about this movie.
  23. You know what, after LeBron James stole the show in Trainwreck, I'm actually really excited about this.
  24. I know Sharon didn't have a huge role in TWS, but I thought her plot arc was being betrayed by SHIELD (in a less extreme/dramatic way than Steve, Natasha, and Fury) and thus having a reason to be jaded and angry. I'm not saying that everyone found peace at the end of that movie, but she was the only one aggressively hitting up the shooting range, so I can see how she could play the cynic to Steve's idealist in Civil War (although I agree that Natasha is the better candidate since she and her relationship with Steve are far more developed at this point.)
