The $100,000 Pyramid - General Discussion
readster replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The $100,000 Pyramid
It drives me nuts because I get that you are in the moment, they can see the timer, but you can figure out what a mirror would say easily but can't bring up things you either pull or people name David? -

How true and something that really made me mad was we never ONCE had a true talk between April and Anna. She was 13 by then and at no point did she call her own mother on her shit saying: "Why did you think he be such a lousy dad?" "He's great and you kept that from both of us all my life." Of course, I don't think AS-P could write anything that good, because she even said she used April to keep Luke and Lorelai apart. Something we also missed was April getting to know her Aunt and other Uncle who were in the same town. Especially after Luke introduced April to Jess at his book store opening. Hell, even Milo said he wanted more interaction between Jess and April and felt it was a missed opportunity. It would have been more organic instead of: "April is mine and no one can have her and I can't tell anyone about her because Anna will take her away!" -

I don't know why no one said: "A string on the back of a toy. " Not to sound sexist, buy she could have said: "A bra strap." -

You summed things up perfectly and even goes to point out that the Ps still wrote that season 7 not only didn't happen, but everyone on the show got stuck in an 8 year void. They might have all gotten older and so forth. However, this was very glaring, especially when it happens within the first 5 minutes of the summer episode. Even April going off as: "I'm 22 now." She has more of a relationship with Rory, who is still 8 years older than her. Yet, Lorelai had no relationship, what's so ever with April in 8 years? That Luke continued to be: "She's mine, I got it." Bullshit! Same with Lulu saying she wanted to have kids with Kirk after being married almost 10 years and were now in their 40s? That Taylor wanted a septic system back after he kicked it out over a decade ago and even made it a point in that episode. People didn't move forward on the show, they either got stuck or went back in time and forgot things. At least the Ps did. -

I agree, and even in the revival, when it came to April, Luke was always: "She's my kid, so stay over on this side of town." I swear the AS-P just enjoyed writing forced conflict with Luke and Lorelai when it came to April. Sometimes it made sense and other times it came off that Luke was a dumbass about things. -
I thought I start a topic on what we are hoping to see in the revival for Last Man Standing with the following discussions: 1. What are you looking forward to in the revival? 2. What are you hoping they leave buried from the shows run on ABC? 3. Where do you hope the series will go? 4. Is putting it back on Friday nights a good move by Fox? Remember, general discussion, no politics or Tim Allen's personal conservative thinking.

You are right, it was written the way. What many people see however is the that April was meant to do one thing: "Break up Luke and Lorelai". Having it be that April wanted to do a science experiment on who her biological father was. I'm shocked any school didn't go: "I think that is a bit unethical and really doesn't work in a school setting. What are you trying to say? Your mother was slut or sleep with a guy and then be: 'I'm done with you.'." Of course Anna was written pretty consistently. She took EVERYTHING at face value and as much as she was happy to let April express all her wild ideas. Like the body cage just to see what it was like for a person who had to wear one. Her hiding April until she was into puberty because Luke saw a bunch of kids acting up at a dinner for the two of them. Which he basically just said in the spur of the moment, was crap. Even when Anna was going to move on the dime because of her mom's health problems, which later just turned out to be an excuse to get out of town. Made it even worst, hell during the revival, if they would have had April say: "Funny how grandma complains about her health and yet she is in better shape than my mom." Either way, the story just put both Luke and Lorelai at their worst of their traits when as mentioned by Liz in season 7: "you two just needed to talk to each other." Which that was it, they didn't talk to each other. -
Original Flavor Season Talk: Dinner at Rodbell's
readster replied to Rhondinella's topic in Roseanne [V]
I remember saying that to my mom way back in the day. Her reply was: "She doesn't want to change, but she wants to earn a living too, you can't have it both ways." Years later, especially being a teacher now, I see that attitude a lot. Many Baby Boomers and now Generation Z want it all, but they don't see that they have to either change their outlook or learning style to make things better for themselves. In Roseanne's classic: "Don't live beyond your raising." speech. Roseanne basically said at that point not only if you grow up poor you are going to die poor. However, in her mind, she never saw an escape, she wanted a quick fix with something that made her happy. If you look at her string of jobs outside of the hair salon. As much as I hated Leon's character, he said it perfectly: "You come and go as you want, and you complain when it isn't your way. I didn't plan on this life either, but I try to make not only the best of it, but improve myself." It goes back to Dan, he had a great worth ethic, but sadly he could never think ahead. He, much like Roseanne went with the: "Easy fix." Dan actually was happy with the City Job, because it was steady and while they weren't rich, it was constant with retirement package and so forth. As soon as Chuck put the bug in his ear about the prison. Dan just thought of major extra cash, especially since Roseanne had Jerry. However, Dan should have thought: "Sorry, I have another kid and one in high school and my oldest isn't financial stable. Have to keep my current job. " The Conners were not smart with money. They didn't know how to deduct their taxes correct, especially with Dan being a contractor. They blew too much money on the Bike Shop. As soon as Dan was working again and slowly rebuilding, Bev dropped the $10K and immediately Roseanne and Jackie were: "Let's open our own business again!" Instead of: "Wait, let's pay some things off, put half in the bank and then go from there." Outside of Chuck, all of the Conners' friends, thought ahead, were careful with their money and while were not having a lot of "fun money" they weren't ready to spend it as soon as it came in. Say what you will about Dan's father, but he knew why he had to be on the road, making money and keeping a roof over his kids' heads back when Dan was young and years later with Crystal. Granted, as we learned Crystal was working, but they had to turn it in with: "Your father is always gone and leaving me with the kids." I wanted to go: "So you prefer that or the street?" Plus, from what we got from his appearances, when he was home he was spending time with the kids and Crystal a lot, trying to make up for lost time. He regretted being on the road, but he still made an effort. -
Too bad they can't do the same to the Bachelor/Bachelorette or Grey's Anatomy, but you know ratings and unless it's just one actor and not the main actors creating problems for the network. They just go: "Money!" I do agree, there comes a time when shows need to be let go in graceful ways, even though shows that officially do say they are going to call it whether by the network or by the main producers/writers. Feel they need to scorch earth their series in the final year or just throw whatever sticks to the wall like: Two and a Half Men, How I Met your Mother, Mike and Molly, Castle, The Middle, Will & Grace. Then just head into the sunset and go to a new series saying: "Well, we were burned out by the end." Then history repeats itself just a few years later. Here is an idea: "Don't hire them!"

Pretty much. Hailey is still trying to get into some "wild awesome job" when she knows really nothing. Alex still is shamed as a nerd and dresses like she is 65 with a skin condition. Luke was told: "Go to college, go to college, go to college." When he really can't and was shown to be very good at managing and business, but then goes to community college because he is sick of taking care of Claire and Phil. Manny keeps acting like people will care about his crap and no one does and then baby outs with adult stuff. Mitch has bounced between so many jobs in the last 5 years, how the duplex hasn't faced foreclosure by not is ridiculous. Cam still spends money like they are have unlimited funds and then acts more like a drama teacher someone who would be handed promotion after promotion in the California school system. Lily who? Gloria now needs a rival who is a woman who does it because she can? Jay can't stay retired and still needs to teach his adult children lessons? Time to move on.

Yeah, I felt that we started seeing that in season 4 towards the end. Some of the things with Kyra made sense and then some made me go: "Really? Seriously?" After I had read about Scarlet's disorder. Things made sense, but really, Growing Pains way back in the day found a way to work things out with Tracy Gold when she was dealing with anorexia. They not only had her go to college, but even had her show up on occasion. Same with Kesley Grammer on Fraiser when he went into rehab or Matthew Perry on Friends with his pain killer addiction. They made things work and while they didn't go into detail on their problems in the show. There was acknowledgement. I felt that the writers decided to focus on season 5 since the CW was happening and they knew they were not a favorite with TPTB during that time. So, I think they were also trying to prove they could still work as a series with one of the main kids gone.

No, we heard and saw most of the brothers. However, why Billy ended up in prison, we have no idea. Something the writers said they didn't want to make the same mistake as they did with Marris and of course Vera on Cheers was creating these characters we never were going to see. Since they hyped them up with descriptions that were impossible. Of course if they would have just decided: "We are going to show them" and be done with it. They wouldn't have written themselves in corners so much. Granted, they couldn't predict Cheers was going to last 11 years after it was almost cancelled after season 1. Plus, when Kesley Grammer went into rehab, they were unsure if the show would come back as a result. What does drive me crazy when writers want to do throw away lines like with Billy or one of Daphne's brothers, but then never really explain why that happened. Yet they can't say for 1 line going: "Oh this person is so and so and why they aren't here."

They really don't have a lot of strong shows and many weren't doing the best to begin with. At least with Wednesdays, they have strong anchor shows and even with Modern Family apparently ending next year. They have other shows to test out to see if they are going to work. I will say that with Fox bringing Last Man Standing back, they should have tried to do a computation with Tuesday nights, instead of recreating Friday nights and Fox has their Tuesday nights pretty fine in their ratings time.

I agree too. After the life that David lived and everything that lead him into the Connors Life. I can see them not working out due to getting married so young and being a shot gun wedding and then David loosing his brother Mark. However, to believe he just got up and left all three and his kids also barely acknowledge him, not that does not ring true at all.

In which Dre has to constantly call her: "Black Nanny 2", when she hates it and keeps telling him her name is Erica.

Ok, that was the one I was referring too. Thanks for the clarification.

Looking at the Independence Inn burns down episode. Why were there so many managers? I have been at many hotels and motels, have friends in the business. Unless you are a 4 star hotel in the middle of Chicago or New York. You aren't going to have more than 1-2 general managers and then at least 2 assistant. When they had that meeting you think the Independence was a chain. When the Dragon Fly opened, who was the manager? That was Michele while Lorelai and Sookie were co-owners and Sookie ran food services and Lorelai the set up, books and design. That made more sense. Some episodes it felt that Lorelai ran the Independence all by herself and then magically there were all these other managers. Where was the money coming from?

I would like to know myself, he always looks like he has had a hard day outside, but we don't know what his JOB is!

Let's hope he brings back much of what made season 1 great and a lot of the "less Ryan and Kristin" from season 6. However, no more type casting with Jay Leno and have the writers, actually talk to each other so they don't just throw something away that happened 2 episodes prior. Please, Mandy is the air head not Vanessa, she didn't get a PhD from a mail in coupon. Come on.

Oh I remember that too. Something Joss Weadon did with Buffy and related characters. As for my thoughts on this, it's just sad, but Roseanne did it to herself and it does drive me insane people who call for the end of Colber or SNL thinking they were one in the same. Just like Last Man Standing was from people didn't want politics when it really came down to expenses and that ABC should have just been more forth coming. However, at least the final episode ended on a positive note, but I was looking forward to season 2.
-
Yes, I agree. With Roseanne gone and then trying to make Splitting Up Together successful in season 2. They should just put Speechless between American House Wife (bump that to 7 pm).

Yet, tried to boost Step by Step in season 1 with Urkle, and even admitting on Step by Step about The Urkle family. -
Well, I'm an old guy, as when Secret of the Sword was released I was a young lad of 7. I remember my friend and I just enjoying the movie and our mothers quietly laughing. However, I loved the show and was so disappointed back in the 2004 series that we never got season 3 and She-ra showing up. Saw all the designs, but so sad we didn't get to see her. Even read that they tried to get Chris Britt to do the voice of Shadow Weaver.

Which really shows how original the writers were. Of course it seems ABC's plans this year were having cliffhangers with a character announcing they were pregnant after a couple reconciled with things.
