I've been listening to "Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan" in which Conan wings it with random fans around the country and it's really a fun listen. One of the guests, a man with a dairy farming background from Ohio, suggested he have a show called "Conan Within Borders" and visit the country. Sounds like a fun idea.

I love that the subtitle is "This is Gus". It took me a minute to get the pun. Now I will have to renew Peacock I guess!

I thought this was by far the best episode of Season 7 although I did enjoy the season overall. It's true that we've been missing some of the semi-regulars - no Frodo again and only a cameo by Mrs. Marlowe at the end - however I was really glad they finally resolved the Tania story from Season One, which had always confused me. It was clear that she and her children were in witness protection and that Mike couldn't tell anyone about it, but I never was sure what their history was - I had actually wondered if she was his ex-wife and the kids were also his. It was very sad to watch her dying but hopefully Hughes will be able to see to it that no threat of harm will come to the children. The other case was at least unpredictable to me, I actually didn't guess the culprit until they revealed it right at the end (though I often don't anyway). I did worry about Tyron (I can't remember the episode when he first appeared) and his obsession with Sims, but he didn't seem to be more than a goof in the end. Sims and Chalmers did work well together. I hope there will be a Season 8 as well, hopefully post-Covid we will see more of the extra cast - I would love to have Jared return for an episode or two.

Interesting, I had no idea about this until now. I will end up watching it I'm sure just to see John Larroquette again. I wonder if Markie Post will be available?

I wish the academy would just swallow their pride and in the future ask TCM for permission to show their "in memoriam" montage instead every year.

I didn't realize there were more episodes of Brokenwood, thanks for the info @LisaM! Previous seasons were only 4 episodes I think? I'm glad there are a couple more (checking IMDB and seeing there is another after this one).

And what a speech he made! I didn't know I could love him more.

I was hoping for Nomadland winning for Cinematography myself. Fern in her solitude against those grand landscapes was something else.

Youn Yuh-jung was wonderful in Minari. Very happy to see that one.

I'm so happy to see Chloe Zhao win! I thought Nomadland was brilliant but wondered if the Academy would consider the subject too much of a downer. Glad to be wrong. And she seems like a lovely person as well.

Lt. Tragg is one of my favorite supporting TV characters. Perhaps as @Milburn Stone suggests, the writers moved quickly to make him more genial in his manner, the cast was said to have a great rapport off screen. Maybe it's because I am a big fan of Ray Collins also, but I just love his humor which probably did become more evident as the show went on. I always thought it was odd the way the show replaced him with Lt "Andy" Anderson (Wesley Lau) who delivered all his lines in such a deadpan Jack Webb manner.

I really liked this one as well. I watched it a second time tonight and caught all the details more completely. In the end I felt sorry for Devin, he really was suckered and almost paid a terrible price at the end. Great move by Kristen. I agree on poor Bernie. I honestly had thought the young teller might have been behind the murder though there was no real motivation for that so I guess it wouldn't have made sense. Also glad to see Frodo involved, however ineptly (though well meaning of course). And the hilariously awful Dennis Buchanan was back again. Though eventually he was a little more sensible this time. I wonder if some of the recurring cast were not available due to Covid? Although New Zealand was said to do an amazing job with containing the virus.

I just saw the third episode of Season 7 of Brokenwood Mysteries. I don't want to give too much away yet, but for those who are keeping score, of the usual semi-regulars, we've had Frodo, Mrs. Marlowe, Ray and Trudy (formerly at the pub, now at a pizza parlor), and the hilariously awful attorney Dennis Buchanan. The first episode wasn't a favorite of mine, much of that had to do with the murder which was pretty gruesome, but it had a couple of good subplots that were more entertaining. The second and third were both very good I thought.

I'm glad the show is back as well! I have to admit that the first episode was too gruesome for me when it came to the murder (I couldn't watch when they showed the flashback scene) though I did enjoy the subplot about the art fraud question. The second episode, The Witches of Brokenwood, was excellent however, I always like it when there are a lot of interesting characters and you can't really guess how it's going to end until they get there. I am sorry Breen is leaving, however, I agree that the new detective looks promising. I did think that Sims was looking interested in him, I wonder if there will be a romance there. It's always great when Frodo and Mrs. Marlowe make their appearances. I do miss Jared and his extended family (last seen in the ducks episode), I wonder if they will return. I wonder if you really can order an I Love Brokenwood hat?

Very sorry to hear about George Segal. I remember him very well also from Just Shoot Me and from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. As said above, I am also glad he was able to stay so active well into his later years. Rest in Peace Sir.

Speaking of the low resolution, I really wish they had made this show on film. You can watch an old show like Perry Mason and it looks so much better. Oh well.

Oh I think it did strike a more serious tone and I don't mean to say it didn't - though it's been awhile since I've seen it also - but I wonder if it was filmed today, would the story maybe take up the whole episode or become a two-parter?

Is that the episode where Harris was shot at by a rookie white policeman @shapeshifter? I feel that situation would have to have been played much darker now. Speaking of Harris, on a lighter note, I like the way that he and Dietrich eventually come to routinely call each other "Ron" and "Arthur" as they become more friendly.

I'm so glad you brought up The Last Flight. I saw it in a small screening many years ago and just saw that the film has popped up on Watch TCM. I'm going to make sure I see it before it leaves. I agree, such a great Lost Generation Film. No frills. Every once in awhile I find myself saying "It seemed like a good idea at the time...."

This is sad news. Considering that they surprised everyone, including the cast, with this decision, I wonder if they would consider doing a final special show to wrap things up properly.

I just watched this last night and really was moved by it. The poignant combination of vast, beautiful scenery with the loneliness of Fern in her tiny van, and the feeling of sadness of the "nomads" trying to make the best of their precarious conditions, left such a very strong impression on me. I agree that Frances McDormand's performance was so subtle, I totally believed her as Fern. Everyone else in the cast was excellent as well. I kind of knew it beforehand, but it was rather amazing to realize that most of the "nomads" were played so well by actual nomadic persons themselves. So glad I was able to see this.

I just watched the promo. I would love to see this. Of course Hulu is practically the only streaming service I don't have. Maybe I can sign up for a free month as a "returning" subscriber. I guess it will have to be the ad-free level though.

I just read about Ronald Pickup on another site. Many years ago I remember seeing a very fine version of Long Day's Journey into Night - it must have been shown on PBS - starring Olivier and featuring a young Ronald PIckup as Edmund. I've been a fan these many years since, though I didn't realize how many other films he'd made. I did happen to watch him in Doc Martin when I binged that show last year. It was great to see him again. Sigh. Rest in peace.
