Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
roseha replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
@EtheltoTillie I hope you are able to have your washing machine fixed. I have a GE under the sink dishwasher that cost twice what a normal dishwasher does, and they no longer make it. I'm on my second one and I'm afraid that when it goes, it goes and I won't have space for another dishwasher. On time I got by with having the motor replaced on the first unit, maybe there will be some solution for you. My laundry room machines work on cards that you refill with cash. There was a website that allowed you to use a credit card but it's no longer secure so I have to go the cash route. Yes the "how long do you wait on people to get their laundry" is almost as popular on AskNYC reddit as "why don't people leash their dogs?" -
Adam Lefko worked as a host for the NBA on TNT on some shows, now of course they have sadly lost that coverage (except for Inside being produced by TNT and broadcast on ESPN in the future). Not to go too far off topic but I imagine TNT is trying to see if their hosts can do other things. Chris Eubanks does a great job, I hope he moves into full time commentary when he retires.

Sad to watch the NBA on TNT sign off. I know Inside will continue but Ernie in particular seemed very sad. Nice to hear the Indiana fans shouting "TNT! TNT"

I caught the interview with Spike Lee and Reggie Miller with the Inside team, it was wonderful television. Spike and Reggie are not only friendly now, but apparently Spike calls Reggie to ask him how various trades etc might help the Knicks. Best part was Spike saying he'd give up one his Oscars for a Knick championship, and Charles cutting in to say "You're going to keep 'em".

I used to have a "Little Leather Library" tiny size edition of King Lear. When I was a legal proofreader in the 1980s I would occasionally read it in my downtime. It amused the proofreader who shared the booth with me and he admitted to reading it at least one time. You can tell this was pre-internet.

I haven't been to a theater in ages - the last film I saw was Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams - in 3D! Quite a film though I find I struggle with the color tints in the 3D glasses. I agree that large TVs are a help though of course the big screen is the best way to see any film. I do wish I could get a bigger TV someday - my 49 inch Sony works fine and isn't tiny but there are times that I struggle with small print on some shows. -
The Brokenwood Mysteries - General Discussion

Well I have to take it back. That finale was the best episode in ages. The Oades family is back and even Dennis Buchanan had a great line near the end. And Mike and Gina were hugging in the last scene? -
One of the staff guys just told me that the living room really looks cleared out! Just in time for the painter on Friday. I'm still finding things to trash or recycle but at this point I want to concentrate of making everything look as presentable as possible. I haven't dealt with emptying out the closet but can do that after the job is scheduled. My super and I did have a conversation about taking up at least part of the living room carpet - I bought a couple of area rugs two months ago at 50 percent off - and I wish we could do it now, the carpet is in such bad shape. But for now I guess I will vacuum as much as I can and see how the scheduling all works out.

I agree on both counts. Also, one of the things that used to make this such a fun series was some of the weird story lines they would come up with, even is some of them weren't very believable. This year aside from the rock and roll episode and the seance episode everything feels kind of meh to me. This latest one especially, I felt like it just didn't add up to much. And I'm concerned that sixth episode, which I haven't seen yet, is set at Christmas? I know they've already done that for a season finale once. Too bad. -
Yes lovely ceremony for Rafa. So far I feel the TNT coverage isn't bad, although I guess I have a stronger tolerance for Johnny Mac than some people. I think he's fairly realistic about the chances for the American players on the clay and he has been giving credit to the players from other countries. I was glad to hear Jim Courier on one of the matches, and also glad to see Chris Eubanks who I hope will be a lead commentator someday. His description of what it was like to walk by Rafa's locker and see everything laid out was cool. I enjoyed seeing my fave Lorenzo Musetti playing so well, but I do wonder how much coverage the women's matches are getting? I didn't see one while I had the TV on.

I really hope this house works out for you @shapeshifter! Honestly having a house has always. been a secret fantasy of mine. I've lived in a series of New York apartments since I came here at age 22. I'm now 72 and when I finish the current de-clutter and have the painters fix the living room and bathroom the place will look so much better (I will upgrade the ancient bathroom after they finish). However I can't help thinking that all this is probably going to mainly benefit whoever lives in this place after me. I know I could have addressed all this sooner - but it is what it is at this point. In regard to the painters themselves, I searched local companies who had a lot of good reviews and decided to feel them out by sending each of them the same long and detailed email describing the apartment and the issues including dealing with the flaking lead paint, and that I hoped to have the painting done in June. One replied that he didn't have room in his schedule. The second agreed to make an appointment but hasn't followed up with me yet. The third promptly replied with a series of times he's available and we settled on next Friday. No wonder they say to ask multiple companies.

So glad you got the water turned on at the house @Yeah No. I am at what I hope is the final stretch of de-cluttering my living room so that I can get a professional painter to come in and fix it, as well as the bathroom. I've gotten rid of all the larger stuff that was taking up space, everything from a bike, to a suitcase, to a huge drawing table top, even one of those shopping carts above but newer - they all had to go. I still have to organize some things to neat up enough so that a painter can come and judge everything. I was so frustrated today though, trying to organize or trash what was left and not making much progress. then around 5 pm I heard something fall. It was more lead paint chips falling from the wall to the sofa. It was loud! I just hope that whoever it is will do a good job so this can finally be done with. Sigh. I was just on the AskNYC reddit sub and someone asked what's your dream apartment. Mine would have a washer dryer and an extra bedroom for my photo work but more importantly it would be from 1990 or later with no lead paint or asbestos, and modern wiring.

The Brokenwood Mysteries - General Discussion

I still can't remember which episode the haunted house was! I'm kind of meh on them bringing back supporting characters from a single episode, they weren't always that memorable to begin with. I did like seeing Gina go to the seance room to figure out how the crime was committed in the third episode, and that she guessed correctly - even though I doubt her discovery of a no longer existing weapon would have held up in court somehow, good thing they got the confession. It seems to me that they didn't make much of an effort to test for fingerprints or DNA in Episode 4 at least. They might have figured out the killer a lot sooner. -

I've only watched the first two so won't comment yet on the third. I did like the first episode a lot in terms of the characters though I also felt so bad for poor Peggy. I suspected a secret baby almost immediately also, but had thought it would turn out to be Anton since he was young and I thought he looked a lot like James. When they said she had a daughter that threw me but it became pretty obvious. Such a dark ending. But good characters in that one. I watched the one about the Quiz Night at the school which was okay but didn't grab me quite as much. I think part of it was that there were so many characters as suspects that I got kind of confused by them all. I might want to re-watch, maybe with captions as sometimes I have trouble following the guest stars' accents. I do miss Mrs. Marlowe a lot, but also miss the wonderfully sleazy lawyer Dennis Buchanan. I hope they have the actor back on, he's hilarious. I do feel this season is an improvement over the last couple, at least we aren't being sidetracked by Mike's ex-wife or -wives showing up. I'd like to see them bring back Missy though, she really had a nice chemistry with Chalmers. -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
roseha replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
I realize that this Pet Peeve should go under the category of You Get What You Pay For - but anyway I sometimes like to watch Youtube videos to figure out how to do something, or to at least get an idea of how someone else might do it. I used to watch videos on film developing. Technically, I know how to do it, and did it briefly in school and later during Covid when the labs were closed. But the loading can be tricky. Anyway one time some guy was showing how to wind the film in a certain process, which has to be done in the dark, and thought it was cute to show the process sped up. I see this all over Youtube, as if people think it's smart to post something that looks like a bad imitation of a silent comedy. I actually posted in the comments that it was hard to follow what he was showing. The guy had no idea! So I noticed this again today. I was looking at a guy taking out and replacing an old medicine cabinet. I'm not intending to do this myself but my 98 year old cabinet (not kidding, my super says it's an original) is in such bad shape that I might try to have it taken out when I have painters come to my apartment to fix things up. So the Youtube guy gets cute and runs part of the process sped up. It's dumb and really irritating to watch as well. Maybe learn to edit people if you're going to post videos? -
I read that Venus will be one of the commentators which sounds good. Chris Eubanks was also mentioned, apparently he appeared on Inside the NBA to promote the event, but i missed it. On the other hand I saw a list of commentators for RG on the reddit tennis sub and it looked like about 30 people, so maybe some of them are actually broadcasting to Europe. I haven't looked to see TNT's actual schedule but maybe they will be more inclined than NBC would to show live matches during the weekdays.

Not sure where to put this - but I just had a memory and a question. I've gotten to love Cosmic Crisp apples. I don't know if they are a recent hybrid or what but the taste is great. Then it occurred to me tonight that they remind me of Winesap apples. Except I can't remember the last time I saw Winesaps anywhere. Anyone else see them these days?

I'm in a 98 year old apartment building so I imagine it's a good guess that there's lead in our ancient pipes. I've always heard about drinking or cooking with cold water anyway though and I imagine that's the main reason. I do use an electric kettle for making pour over Melitta type coffee every morning. I don't have a coffee maker anymore and would rather not turn on the gas range just to boil water. I know that my little kettle takes exactly 5 minutes to boil and turn off. -
I was looking for thread like this one. I also greatly miss WCBS-FM who were such a great oldies station in 1980s or so. I especially loved Dan Ingram who went back to the salad days of WABC in the 1960s. He was so hilarious and smart. There are no decent oldies stations in NYC anymore, not even on the HD substations - I looked it up and would probably buy a radio with HD if there were. But just by exploring I found an upstate NY HD2 station online which plays a lot of various oldies, mainly from the 50s to the 70s but with a lot of good 60s tunes: It's WCNY. Youtube also has a lot of great obscure 60s tunes if you go looking for them. My favorite, and I am not sure how I found him, is an online "Virtual DJ" from Greece, Mod Elo. His obscure 60s garage mixes are just great and fun to hear 60s music that I haven't ever heard, and I was around with my own clock radio in those days.

Between the winter weather and the continuing cracking paint on my nearby living room wall, i hadn't pursued printing any photos for the art club on my expensive Epson printer for just about 6 months. Standard advice is to run it at least once a month or the ink can dry up. So I needed to print for the summer show, and decided to take care of it today. I ran a print head cleaning, and two black and white photos. Came out fine! Thankful for a little good fortune.

Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House: Best and Worst TV Homes
roseha replied to Wiendish Fitch's topic in Everything Else TV
Somewhere on the internet there's a color photo of the Addams family interior house set. It looked really bizarre in color but clearly the creators knew what they were doing when they filmed that show in black and white. It reminds me of my college teacher commenting that she didn't think Young Frankenstein needed to be in black and white but I disagree! On reflection maybe the Addams and the Munsters would have gone to color had they lasted longer in the 1960s but the effect would certainly have diminished. I still feel so bad that ultimate noir TV show, The Fugitive, went to color in its final season. -
I just checked and the really useful site Titan TV is still around and as useful as ever. Not only can you enter your listings either via broadcast or cable or even streaming, but it gives descriptions of the plots of various episodes. I used to love to use it to see which episodes of Law and Order were playing.

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

Happy Birthday to Mr. William Daniels. I will now date myself, I saw him on Broadway in 1776 when I was 16. I remember that he was great. I guess I haven't seen the film but I thought there was a TV version in which Blythe Danner played Martha Jefferson? Or was that the film?- 4.5k replies
