  1. I actually worked for a Film Society for a good 15 years so I did see some unusual and classic and sometimes really strange movies, but not nearly as many as I could have I suppose. I must have been the only staff member who never programmed anything. I especially love the art of silent film because it's so different as a means of expression, not only the silence but the fact the film often wasn't made at natural speed but could be sped up or slowed down according to what the creators wanted. I"m a big fan of The Silent Comedy Watch Party with Ben Model and Steve Massa on Youtube. They still have a new episode about every month. The last film I have seen in a theater? It may have been Werner Herzog's 3D movie about the cave paintings (not making this up).
  2. I have a question about the second show. So apparently Gaia wasn't really Gaia? And her own mother couldn't figure that out? And Mike et al. didn't even question in passing then that maybe the mom might be part of the scam? Not saying she was, just odd that it didn't come up. Or did I miss something?
  3. I'm sure the musical was meant to be deliberately awful, but aside from getting to see Frodo dance I was really wishing the opening would have been cut in half timewise. It kind of reminded me of sitcoms staging a musical episode so the regulars get a chance to sing and dance for a change. Not sure why they thought the Statue of Liberty was a good idea either though it made sense as the thing that finally drove Missy away. I really liked Missy in her first appearance in the otherwise awful cowgirl themed episode, and was hoping they could bring her back for more scenes with Chalmers. Then when I thought she might be the killer I was really annoyed. Fortunately she wasn't so I hope she comes back. Great to see Dennis Buchanan again. His twisted legal logic always makes me laugh. I could have done without Ralph coming back, though, he makes my skin crawl. I miss Mrs. Marlowe and Jarod too.
  4. They seem to run the Torchy Blaines every few months, I think I"ve seen all the ones with Glenda Farrell.
  5. It apparently went up to 88 here in NYC today. Way too soon. However it's quickly dropping back down to the 60s tomorrow for the foreseeable future. I wish that the rain wasn't coming with it though!

Djoko losing to the brilliant young Italian Lorenzo Musetti is the best thing to happen all year for me! Lorenzo had been really struggling for awhile, and I hope this will give him the confidence boost he needs to keep improving. Can't wait to watch on replay.
  7. I read the NY Times, Washington Post, Guardian and other newspapers online. I have a bad habit though of subscribing to a fine art monthly and then forgetting to download it. Let's see, there's Medium Format Photography, Aperture and the Noir City Newsletter that I get for donating to Eddie Muller's Film Noir Foundation... Some of these were the subs I had to check when my credit card got hacked but fortunately I had put most of them on Paypal anyway.
  8. I worked at a fine arts organization and when I left after 15 years was told that they "don't give references". I ended up getting two, one from my former executive director (at that place) and another from a co-worker who joked "What are they going to do, fire me?" This was about 17 years ago though.
  9. Thanks @nokat I never thought of that. The website is displaying the last four digits (as they always do) but not the complete new number. I always thought they wouldn't update it until I received the card and verified it. Interesting question though.
  10. I was going to post about cold french fries but who doesn't hate that, ha. Newest peeve, having my credit card hacked (I got the news from the company in a late night email) and today having to go through my account and figure out all the monthly subscriptions that I now have to update with a different card, since of course the new one won't come in the mail right away. FIrst choice: put it on Paypal as I will only have to update the card there and take care of a bunch of them at once. Second choice: the card that not everyone takes.... Third choice: the other main card.... Hacker I hope you enjoyed the 11 dollars that you didn't get.
  11. I happened to look up both Dr. Loveless, the character, and Michael Dunn, the actor on Wiki. Dr. Loveless has quite a long entry! As for Mr. Dunn, he certainly had many career accomplishments, so sad he died at 38. I think it was a shame that his character was killed off in the pilot of Get Smart.
  12. I haven't read any fiction in I don't know how long, but I do occasionally read biographies or non-fiction on a subject that interests me, often on movies/film makers or performers for example. Sometimes I just jump around in the book's sections (for example in Eddie Muller's Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir which I bought via Kindle) I find it easier to either buy or rent books via Kindle or some other e-book service. I can take out 3 e-books at a time with my New York Public Library card, and it's useful for books that would otherwise be way too expensive to buy.
  13. The problem is also about reaction time. Even on a local road there is the need to stop short if a child for example suddenly appears. Having his doctor tell him to stop driving is one possibility.
  14. The spoiler apparently will be As far as where Harry lived I was under the impression that all the characters in the original show lived in the city but I don't remember it being discussed much if at all.

This Miami open has had some great matches. First Sinner comes from behind to beat Alcaraz last night. And today Petra Kvitova played an amazing match to defeat Elena Rybakina, 10 years her junior, and take the title. 30th career title for Petra, and after all she has been through after the attack on her hand, it is so great to see her triumph. The match in the first set was very dramatic with an absolutely wild 16-14 tiebreak with both players saving multiple set points, then Petra ran away with the second. She is such a smart veteran as well as the winner of the sportsmanship award every year. I would love to see another Wimbledon title for her.
  16. I like the way the episode ended up. The final scene on the roof was sweet and I really liked that Dan said that it was something that he and Harry and "the rest" of the group used to do. That's the closest they've gotten to acknowledging the other original characters which I hope will come maybe in Season Two. John Larroquette and the Wedding Planner actress were really funny together. Nice also the callback about Dan's name being Reinhold. And sad about Abby missing Harry, she also was smiling less in this show which was noticeable and fitting. I liked her story about going to museums with Harry pretending to be a guide and making stuff up. As far as Rand is concerned, I did see a spoiler about that on Reddit which I guess you can look for there if you like. Anyway, I have to say that personally I think Pete Holmes is such a bad actor that I won't mind it at all if Abby moves on. Sorry to sound harsh but I have to think he was cast for his celebrity.
  17. I remember in particular the "slow talker" defendant actor, whose name I don't remember, was one of the best occasional guest stars on Barney Miller. I always looked forward to seeing him.
  18. I finally saw Laura, I think for some reason I had only seen it up to the point when the detective wakes up and sees Laura walking in the door. Watching tonight, I wondered was she really alive or was he dreaming. Turns out she's alive. Anyway, great cast, and a great dramatic ending. Great mysterious atmosphere including Gene Tierney's performance. Although I do think the painting isn't very flattering. Though Waldo did call that out. So I really need to see Double Indemnity, one of the other essential noirs that Eddie Muller mentions along with many others in his Ask Eddie show on Youtube (which I really enjoy watching). I love films like In a Lonely Place and The Big Sleep - I've been a Bogart fan since I was a teenager - but I think if I were to recommend a noir story to someone to start it would be Out of the Past; that has such a feeling of foreboding and doom and Robert Mitchum is great. But there are many more I need to see, I should be recording Noir Alley when it returns.
  19. A poster on another thread mentioned that MeTV airs Looney Toons at 9 AM Eastern Time on Saturdays. I don't know what era they are showing but maybe your favorites will show up. I once worked for a film society and we showed some Chuck Jones cartoons on the big screen. Those Road Runner cartoons looked great.
  20. Just out of curiosity, how were the Rockford revival TV movies? I am not sure if I ever saw them, or if they would be shown now on one of these channels but I wonder how they are.
  21. Just to get to the second plot first, I agree that the Dan/Gurgs bench plot was just great. Every scene was funny and really well played. When Dan spontaneously said "Laissez les bons temps rouler" I expected the maintenance head to respond in kind but of course she thought he wanted to eat her alligator! As for the main plot, I think it was decently written. However I just don't think I like Pete Holmes. I'm not really familiar with him, but his acting really turns me off. He kept making exaggerated facial expressions when the other actors were talking. It just seemed forced. I don't know if he will just turn out to be an occasional guest star but I don't think he would be a great regular. I actually thought he made Olivia and Neil look good by comparison. I have to say though that the concept of Abby having a secret beast mode is a promising one that they should go back to. Fun line: When Abby wants Neil to do push ups on the cafeteria floor and he refuses because "It's been cleaned with a rat". That kind of looney callback repetition is like something out of Green Acres.
  22. Thanks @EtheltoTillie for checking that! I wish it was on the digital version though. Just for the sake of it.
  23. Yes I wonder what it's like for young people who may not know what to believe anymore. For what it's worth, I just noticed that the New York Times, which I read online, has dropped the byline "All the News that's Fit to Print". When did that happen??

The ending of that Meddy/Tiafoe match was just wild! Frances saving 7 match points was crazy, I guess Med was grateful to get that ace on the final match point. I stayed tuned in for the Alcaraz/Sinner match and though I hoped it would also be a wild one after their US Open clash, it was pretty much a letdown after the first set, Carlos went on to dominate. I have to say though that I just hate the new legalized coaching rule. Juan Carlos was shouting instructions out to Carlos loudly in the game where he first broke Sinner. He was so loud that I really think that ought to be considered a hindrance. But Sinner's box was shouting too. I notice that you don't hear this so much from the boxes of the more experienced players overall, though the crowd was incredibly noisy in the Med/Tiafoe match. But I think it's a terrible rule change and it probably won't be kept to just once in a while as the rule supposedly is written. I do think Meddy/Carlos will be a good final so will have to watch that one.
  25. I've been noticing that too @TattleTeeny. Maybe it's some "bot" that can't distinguish singular from plural... In terms of swimming pools (going back to @PRgal's post), my mom did tell me that way back in the day she wouldn't let my older sister swim in a public pool due to fears about polio. But apparently that was a widespread fear at the time, whether it was proven or not.
