  1. Oh I think it did strike a more serious tone and I don't mean to say it didn't - though it's been awhile since I've seen it also - but I wonder if it was filmed today, would the story maybe take up the whole episode or become a two-parter?
  2. Is that the episode where Harris was shot at by a rookie white policeman @shapeshifter? I feel that situation would have to have been played much darker now. Speaking of Harris, on a lighter note, I like the way that he and Dietrich eventually come to routinely call each other "Ron" and "Arthur" as they become more friendly.
  3. I'm so glad you brought up The Last Flight. I saw it in a small screening many years ago and just saw that the film has popped up on Watch TCM. I'm going to make sure I see it before it leaves. I agree, such a great Lost Generation Film. No frills. Every once in awhile I find myself saying "It seemed like a good idea at the time...."
  4. This is sad news. Considering that they surprised everyone, including the cast, with this decision, I wonder if they would consider doing a final special show to wrap things up properly.
  5. I just watched this last night and really was moved by it. The poignant combination of vast, beautiful scenery with the loneliness of Fern in her tiny van, and the feeling of sadness of the "nomads" trying to make the best of their precarious conditions, left such a very strong impression on me. I agree that Frances McDormand's performance was so subtle, I totally believed her as Fern. Everyone else in the cast was excellent as well. I kind of knew it beforehand, but it was rather amazing to realize that most of the "nomads" were played so well by actual nomadic persons themselves. So glad I was able to see this.
  6. I just watched the promo. I would love to see this. Of course Hulu is practically the only streaming service I don't have. Maybe I can sign up for a free month as a "returning" subscriber. I guess it will have to be the ad-free level though.
  7. I just read about Ronald Pickup on another site. Many years ago I remember seeing a very fine version of Long Day's Journey into Night - it must have been shown on PBS - starring Olivier and featuring a young Ronald PIckup as Edmund. I've been a fan these many years since, though I didn't realize how many other films he'd made. I did happen to watch him in Doc Martin when I binged that show last year. It was great to see him again. Sigh. Rest in peace.
  8. Thanks @dargosmydaddy I just realized that I didn't scroll down far enough. D'oh! 🙂
  9. Thanks very much @dargosmydaddy. I see the threads from Season 2, thanks. I am loving the show too! I do wonder sometimes about certain details since so much can happen in a single episode, so that will be useful!
  10. Great news about more Brokenwood Mysteries! I have just in the last week discovered Endeavour. I don't want to go on the thread for it here because I'm only on Season 2 and I'm not sure if it will reveal too much, but it is great having a new-to-me show to watch. The cast is excellent.
  11. Does anyone have Peacock Premium Plus? Supposedly it eliminates the commercials with a few exceptions? Any idea what those exceptions might be? Thanks
  12. Thanks for the info @ElectricBoogaloo. I was hoping sooner but it looks like April it is.
  13. Does anyone know when the show will start on US Netflix? I thought I saw next month? Thanks
  14. @WendyCR72 and @peacheslatour, thanks for the info about the French version of CI on Youtube! I might have read about it years ago but if I did I completely forgot. Maybe my high school French will help a little but if the episodes resemble the originals that much I'd like to try and see them anyway and see how well I can follow along. Will take a look. Edit: Wow, thanks for that clip above @WendyCR72, it looks good!
  15. I think Goren just got the perp to confess in Vacancy, if I remember correctly. I can see why you feel that way about No Exit, it's certainly depressing, but I think it was one of the episodes that made me realize what superior television this show was at its best. One hard hitting scene after another.
  16. I haven't watched this show for awhile, but I noticed today that it's re-running on WOR Channel 9 in NYC. I think they are on Season 3. I'm going to have Tivo record some episodes. Sorry to have missed In the Wee Small Hours. I agree also, it's one of my favorite episodes. As far as breaking up the 2 hour version goes, my problem with that is that they always seem to break it up exactly at the point where they've found the body in the marsh - exactly where you don't want it to stop. Great episode though, I agree all the cast gets a chance to shine. Some of my other favorites were from around that time - No Exit, one of the most depressing scenarios ever, but fascinating in that every character either is guilty, or (like the victim's parents) seem to look guilty of something, and a great courtroom scene with Carver. I also really liked Vacancy, maybe not a popular opinion, but the ending when Goren says "this search for the truth - it's not for the faint hearted" is one of my favorites. I do wish that Carver had stayed on, or that they had at least brought him back for the Season 10 wrap up. I think the show lost something when they dropped the DA role. I do agree that Season 10 was a good finale though, with Goren and Eames more like their season 1-5 selves, with his insight and her sense of humor more like before.
  17. RIP Mr. Fletcher. I used to love the Whodini video for The Freaks Come Out at Night. It got a lot of play on a show called Video Music Box on NY Channel 25 back in the 1980s.
  18. From the NY Times: Karen Killilea, 80, Dies; Turned Disability Into Triumph I remember reading her mother's book about her when I was growing up. Inspiring person, and the same can be said for her family of course.
  19. I don't know. I've signed up for so many services and then tend to forget I have them. I got Netflix to see Kim's Convenience, but now that I've seen them all I may just cancel it. I don't find myself going back to it generally speaking. I haven't watched Acorn lately but I imagine I will eventually, I like a lot of their shows. I do have a cheap low level cable plan with Spectrum that allows you to select 12 cable channels in addition to their local news (NY1 herein New York, which I think is very professional) and all the over the air channels. I'm able to get Turner Classics for example, anyway the plan is fairly cheap and at least I'm not paying for all the channels I wasn't watching before on cable, or for that matter, on Youtube TV. I have a cable card with a Tivo so that way I can still record.
  20. Thanks very much for that great article! I really liked Stephen's quote to the effect of serenity being more important than happiness. I hope his vertigo won't be a long term problem.
  21. Isn't that when Stephen played the nerdy store manager trying to help Obama find a new job?
  22. I just noticed that Barney Miller is playing on the Roku Channel, Seasons 7 and 8 I believe. I didn't check to see if there are a lot of commercials though I imagine there may be.
  23. Thanks for starting this show thread! I think Green Acres coming as it did in the late 60s, seemed to miss being noticed at the time for its rural-based surrealism. It wasn't just Arnold the pig, the "son" of the Ziffels, who would get drafted among other adventures, but one character would come up with a nonsensical word or phrase and everyone Oliver would run into would casually repeat it. Not to mention Lisa's square eggs, and the episode which opens with her asking Oliver about all the names floating in space above their bedroom (the shows' opening credits). Certainly this show had an influence down the line to the rural weirdness of Larry, Darryl and Darryl of Newhart, and Hank Yarbo of Corner Gas. Great show.
  24. Route 66 has been playing on the Retro Subchannel recently. It airs in the New York area as a channel 33 sub (WJLP) so it may be available elsewhere.
  25. I just tuned in to see Stephen's monologue. It was so brilliant and eloquent on so many levels. Especially the parts about reality and about "wrestling with the pig". And funny as well! I agree, so good to see him so happy.
