The Great Pottery Throw Down - General Discussion

You had me at Matthew Goode. -
Recycling former GBBO signatures again with the biscuit selfie, as if the challenge wasn't lame enough the first time round.

Cheyenne tells her about Lowell dropping a comment about all the stores being closed and Amy sais she will look into it. Her expression suggesting that this is news to her too.

Glenn in that prime Karen haircut LOL. I don't quite understood how he got Lowell to eat the dog food, it wasn't really a high pressure situation or so massively embarassing that it would cause him to snap. Cheyenne standing her ground, eventually, to that smug ass was great. She is decent at her job and somehow, after this episode, looks like another person more suited to Glenn's job than Glenn. Jonah is just tragic, but Sandra is the real MVP of the store.

LOL the editor that put in the James McAvoy crotch shot. Boy, David Baddiel wasn't wrong when he said he will be the worst baker in the history of the show. What a mess. The toblerone ears on general meow were quite fun! To be fair, the rest of them did quite well with only minor hickups. And it seems they had at least one practice round with their bakes before the show. They were focussed and not faffing about. But it was the James show this week - social media went bonkers over him last night, he is the nations new favourite stay at home and bake dad. I'm sure many a battery was drained last night 😅. His scones were very neat and apparently he got his flavours right (and the booze always helps with Prue). Matt, again, was a lot better as a solo host.

This did not go as I expected. Lindsey was a no brainer for the final. LOVED the mural. But I was surprised that they picked Siobhan over Paul. What is it with Siobhan and her black pudding coloured ceilings? Her and Paul's designs are both really cluttered and a lot to take in, but at least with James I don't get the feeling I should start adressing the ceiling with Robert Burns quotes. I really wonder why we didn't get customer reactions this time, and I wouldn't be surprised if the eggshell cafe owner was a bit pissed that they completely ignored his branding colour and that the scheme wasn't cohesive at all. Michaela's comment that the owner should take their designs as an opportunity to rebrand was very unprofessional. And from the person who designed Barbie's Yorkshire dream home. I don't enjoy Alan pitching in from the sidelines. Its like early Project Runway before they made Heidi Klum a judge. Yay! They are already looking for contestants for the next series! -
Gather round to share theories for potential new seasons, and any spoiler you come across. And smoothie recipes.

I want to make the technical too but I am hopeless with dumplig dough. They looked soooooo delicious. I liked Hugo's little comment, during Sheldon's critique, that it is very difficult to infuse buttercream with green, leafy flavors. Those nuggets of professional knowledge make the judging so much more interesting. On series 2 of GBBO Mary Berry told Mary-Anne that using brown sugar will always give a softer merengue, which I found very interesting and helpful. Paul Hollywood is quite good at judging bread, but I don't find his comments that interesting on some other techniques. -

Congratulations Welsh Alanis Morisette. I knew after they presented their schemes that she'd take the trophy. If you asked me to come up with the challenge I'd want to watch the least, it'd be an art deco Clarice Cliff extravaganza. Clarice is an Antiques Roadshow/Roadtrip/Bargain Hunt favourite and my personal pet peeve. That being said, they all did a proper job. Peter went full Clarice and I liked the story and whimsical detail with the setting sun. The flasks weren't great. I liked Adam's concept and colours (and will let others judge whether that was deco or not), but the shape on those flasks? And why didn't he put a spout on, like on a cocktail shaker? What was practical about that ladle? or the shallow cups that looked like they'd hold 100ml of punch at best - thats not how punch works 😄 Jodie, I think, scored heavily on the number and execution of techniques she used, and her decoration that pulled everything together. I'd expect the hooks on that punch bowl to have a rather short half life - they'd be critically endangered after one evening in my house because I am so clumsy. What are those flasks supposed to hold? Spirits? Absinthe? Good to see that they are already putting out the casting call for the next series! -
I thought the opposite, actually 😅 As for Daniel's shotgun wedding story: I know someone who did exactly that. Highschool sweethearts, had a big family wedding in their early 20s and got it anulled 2 weeks later. 10 years on he is now married with 4 kids and happy as a peach. They can all laugh about it and his now wife thinks the story is hilarious.

I wonder if we will get a Where are they now montage like they did for the Parks & Rec final.

If I want to watch cute cats, there are 1000 places on the internet where I could watch 24 hours of kitty content a day without Kat as an annoying side plot. 😄

I have a feeling the writers had a version of this story stowed away somewhere for quite a while in case the series got the axe. It would have worked at any time, even with Amy around. Granted its a bit much on the back of Covid, but not ooc. They tried to manipulate the fitbit challenge and there was an episode about Social Media numbers iirc. Did they bring Jeff back to indicate that there is place - a more tedious one - at Cloud 9 even for the most incompetent people?

One of my guity pleasures are First Year Uni Haul videos on Youtube where teenagers who are about to start uni and move into halls show off everything they bought - from kitchenware and towels to sheets and hangers and plan how to decorate their rooms. I swear everybody buys the same damn fake plants from IKEA, the set of 3 artifical succulents and the helix hanging plant. You are of age, you should be able to take care of a real spider plant or a cactus. They (its 95% girls who do those videos) also all go for the same colours, its always pink, white and grey/black. And fairy lights. -

Did you know that the Pottery Throwdown producers chose Keith to be a judge on the show based on a video of him singing about pottery in Adele drag? Me neither, but the Guardian has a lovely article about the show and dug up this nugget of fun for us: Thats a crackin pair of legs Keith! -

The thing with those celebrity episodes is that you never know what we'll get. I knew that Rob and Tom went to school together, but I can't tell if they were/are mates. Tom baking fully suited up was very on brand, and very entertaining that he brought some techniques and vocabulary from his stint as host of the Brake Off Professionals with him. I love Alexandra Burke, she is a always a very positive, upbeat addition to any show. Daisy is lovely, but she was overshadowed on both the baking and the entertainment. Looks like this season of SUTC Bake Off will be heavy on the 3D cakes. A former colleague watches German Bake Off and apparently they do 3D cakes every single week.

Great that we finally got customer reactions, and that Michelle didn't force an elimination. Did they plan for an extra semi-finalist when they organised the spaces for redecpration? I will never understand this country's obsession with fake plants. The fake garden view was an inspired idea, the mural was rally busy. The barber shop felt incredibly dark. Hated the colour on the ceiling. When the owners described what they were after I imagined something completely different. -

Even though I liked Dan and Julia more, mostly because they ate and tried so many of the bakes, and wasn't that keen on Anne and Alan after the first episode, I have to admit that they are growing on me. They are called tensegrity tables if you want to google them - there are various designs around. That was a banging idea from Sheldon!
