  1. She can’t even pay the accountant, let alone the detectives…. I really liked the “truce” (sort of) that Fitz and Phelps landed on. Phelps will still wind up Fitz, but I think he has a bit of respect for him now, and maybe realizes Fitz really does want to achieve on merit, not Daddy’s influence and connections. Phelps climbed a couple notches in my book when he thanked Fitz- never expected him to. The most I thought we’d hear from him was a simple acknowledgment, no more.
  2. They did a nice job with dialogue between the two that made it very clear. Audrey is family. Apparently, there’s no Christmas episode. I’m thinking it’s because there’s a war on. Look at IMDb, we might see the birth, as James is asking to go home for it (and is told to “suck it up and get back to work”).
  3. Not the purpose of the tape. No matter what, the glass was always going to break, but the tape served to protect the shards from doing so much damage. Theoretically saving someone’s life. Instead of a shard penetrating the jugular, you might survive a mass of taped glass flying in your face.
  4. I understand the frustration about the exact dates the chosen music hit the charts, but you do have to admit that it seems to be well chosen to reflect the plot. I think they figured if it came from the same decade, it was fair game.
  5. Lots of telegraphing in that scene. For what it’s worth, I’ve never seen that actor play a protagonist role. He always seems to be the conniving, mean, perp, who’s trying to carry out evil plans.
  6. Really? According to my guide-no new episode this week (due to the Super Bowl?). Yet they still tease us in ads with new scenes! My guide shows episodes 1-3 on Hallmark from 7-10pm.
  7. One of those foods best eaten fresh out of the oven, otherwise, squirrel food. (Wild birds should not eat bread.)
  8. I don’t think I’ve ever not seen it, unless the character intended to hide the fact. Seems like if it’s a happy occurrence, they’re always walking around clutching the belly.
  9. Definitely an eye-roller. I wonder if it has become a production standard first, to indicate the character is preggers, and second, to keep the prosthetic from visibly shifting around (oops, that first term baby just dropped).
  10. And, as with all things collective, the other side of that coin produced evil, undeserved social attitudes toward those who stayed behind. If the 4F (rejection) designation wasn’t readily apparent to all the self-appointed social saints, said “saints” would make life miserable for the victim. So, I suggest watching The Four Feathers, as well. (Or, remember the fears of the retired, decorated, Indian navigator from the Christmas episode of Call the Midwife).
  11. Well, well said. One of my favorite movies is Mrs. Minnever. Civilian fishing boats, pleasure craft, even dinghies all braved the treacherous (as the open sea) channel to evacuate the tired troops at Dunkirk. That truly was the collective mentality of the day, and to think during those times, the actual truth about the barbarity employed by the enemy was being covered up and denied. They’re not called “the greatest generation” for nothing. Sacrifice (without ‘whine’-pun intended) was the norm. Watch either of those movies and feel good about human compassion and generosity.
  12. Maybe in this version Oscar can stick around. I’d like that because he really is a beautiful cat with such a sweet face.
  13. After this last episode, I’m completely confused about where Mrs. Hall rests her head at night. THIS episode, she clearly came down the stairs first thing in the morning. I think the continuity person/people are busy with the other characters and don’t really consider the implications of Audrey’s entrances/time of day.
  14. Being ambidextrous would certainly fit with the character, and I doubt there were “lefty” scissors manufactured at that time. Eliza strikes as the kind of character who would easily frustrate at the inefficiency of trying to complete certain tasks without switching hands, depending on the available tools.
  15. They have left us in the dark with the plot and story progression so much and then move everything along at rapid pace toward the end of each episode to keep us coming back. It really annoys that the translation captions of two line lengths disappear before you can read and absorb them, but then you’re left to think about the innuendo as well. @Snazzy Daisy has pretty much identified all the questions, but the entire presentation has been too scattered and random.
  16. I do realize that, although most Americans don’t. All “Saint” beginnings are reduced to “sin”. I was just commenting on Mrs. Fitzsimmons’s need to turn the “John” , usually pronounced “jin”, into a three syllable meal!
  17. So, yeah, that idea was wrong. But I really liked this most recent episode. We all knew that Jacob, if alive, would be much older and I don’t know why Kat didn’t realize that as well. Really liked Isaiah Landry and everything Jacob had accomplished during the intervening years. I’m thinking Kat should be satisfied with knowing he thrived. Trying to bring him back might eliminate something or someone she cares about in the present.
  18. It’s actually a fact. As the threat of German invasion became apparent, all signposts in England were either taken down or switched to confound any invading troops. The idea was to buy time to get civilians to a place of safety and rally a defense for the town/village. Every area had the civil defense, made up of men who were too old, too young, exempted, or otherwise unfit for military duty. They patrolled nightly to ensure blackout measures were followed, took down the signposts, assigned bomb shelters, investigated black market complaints and ensured that the rationing rules were followed. The signpost removal was to confound the enemy who presumably were using maps, so it was to confuse them/delay them from reaching major targets for seizure. All of England’s towns and villages were connected by narrow, twisting, winding roads, and they attempted to use that fact to their defense. I often think of this defensive device as England’s “ride of Paul Revere”.
  19. Yes. She said, “He’s not the marrying kind”, and I think she’s said it more than once as I remember it from season one.
  20. The woman who healed Kat after she was shot is Elliot’s ancestor. I think the horse that keeps appearing to Del is the healer’s horse-used to save Kat from the middle of town.
  21. I’m thinking that the writers pulled that recruitment ploy from the wrong decade, as I remember it being used after they ended the draft in the US. I suppose it may have been employed in Britain, but I don’t see why it would be needed in a time when they were removing direction signs in anticipation of invasion.
  22. I’m finding it hard to watch because it seems to rely on so much that is visual to inform the viewer. To add to the confusion, the foreign language subtitles disappear too quickly to understand any speech longer than a phrase. I find myself rewinding numerous times to understand. The artist, Fitzsimmons annoys me as well, and his mother was just a bit too much. It also aggravates me that the cc spells the artist’s father’s name (St. John Fitzsimmons) “Singeon”! And the mother even pronounced it “sin-gee-un”. They just seem like annoying red herrings, but obviously they’re up to something. Whether it’s related to the main story is doubtful. Surprising that the head nun was a resistance fighter, who later had a calling, but they did a good job with dialogue to explain her resulting situation.
  23. The flue. That’s why Chimney Sweep was a viable profession in those times. I was thinking along those lines as well. In charge of procurement!
  24. Oh, this was absolutely THE best! Loved seeing the former boss get her comeuppance! The “Badger”! At this time, I was just a smidge too young to have had a department store job, but if I had, friends and I would have mislabeled that hat as the boss’s beaver! Loved the writing process, and the TV appearance, and the bar scene. Love all the characters as well. I wish her roommate had a personality though. Do we know why she’s so awfully subdued?
