S06.E16: Last Day on Earth - Pre-Air Speculation and Live Chat
Joan van Snark replied to HalcyonDays's topic in S06
Honestly curious as to all the 'therapy will be needed' type comments.... Haven't we seen countless deaths on this show already? If you could survive seeing sweet Hershcel's head getting chopped off, what is going to be so awful about whatever may or may not happen tonight? -
Ugh I cant stand the writing on this show!!! The action sequences are usually well done and exciting but these people do NOT talk or act like human beings. Everything is so 'symbolic' and over the head -- there is no subtlety. Now all of a sudden Carol does a total 180 and is peace out??????

Has anyone ever seen a picture of Kris's father?
-
I do not think Khloe shows any African features at all. I definitely believe she is Alex Roldan's daughter. When you see pictures of the 4 K children, it is just so obvious the other 3 look very Armenian like their father and Khloe just doesn't. I would bet a million dollars if Khloe had a DNA test she would show up as half-siblings to the other 3 and would show no Armenian ancestry. What is Alex Roldan's ethnicity anyway? Hispanic? I always thought Kris herself looked pretty exotic and dark for someone who is supposedly English and Dutch (nee Houghton). Has anyone ever seen pictures of Kris's father?

Season Two Episode Talk
Joan van Snark replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Holiday Baking Championship [V]
I must say I really enjoyed this little show. I really like Duff--I think he is genuinely a funny, nice guy. Nancy didn't annoy me as she does so terribly on her own Farmhouse show--thank god she toned it down for this. I didn't dislike Maeve as much as some of the other posters, so I was OK with her win. It really does seem like Nancy and the other woman judge don't like each other though! I liked Adalberto and although his Christmas tree cake was cute, I don't think it was refined enough. I really wish Padua had made it to the end--thought he was entertaining to watch. I kind of wish Hayley had made it to the finale just to see what excuses she would have come up with. You could tell that the other finalists were just in a different league from her and I can't understand how she made it so far. -
Because the writing and directing on this show is REALLLLY bad. Only thing really keeping me interested at this point is my love of Carol and Andrew Lincoln's acting. Can't believe they have ABSOLUTELY RUINED Morgan! All that buildup for this? What idiot thought his ridiculous Zen thing would be compelling? I just don't understand these writers. It's like they get these basic ideas of where to go and stick with it without really thinking about if it will actually work and play with the audience. Can't believe we are about to go through another half-season and probably beyond with a new governor character! Yeah!

As mentioned by other posters, not everything about this episode was completely believable, but it was good enough that I could suspend any disbelief I had. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering how the Alison thing would play out. Contrasted with that other show that comes on at the same time on AMC, there is no comparison. This show keeps coming up with fresh new twists to keep things interesting, but that one seems to be quickly running out of ideas. Why am I watching that one live and catching this afterwards on Showtime Anytime? Anyway, can't say it enough that I LOVE LOVE LOVE when Saul and Carrie are aligned and working together. If anything I thought the Quinn parts slowed everything down. Does anyone think it's possible the Dar was turned a long time ago and has been playing everyone the whole time? And going all the way back to Season 1---didn't Saul refuse to take a polygraph? Was that ever explained? That would certainly rock my world if Saul turned out to be a double agent.

I think I finally realize that this show can be really really bad. But I don't quit watching because the good episodes can be really great, and Andrew Lincoln is fantastic. I am so sick and tired of them amping up the fake drama with 'walker danger'. Why the scene with Darryl frantically trying to get his crossbow out of the bag? Didn't he have a knife??? Why didn't he just walk up to the thing and take it out with the knife like he has done hundreds if not thousands of times already? It just seems like a cheap device they constantly use to create tension, but it's not working anymore. I also think whoever directs the walker scenes really needs to come up with some new techniques. The scene last night where the guy walks right up to the walker and gets bit. Really? That was so unbelievable to me. Ditto the scene where the cheesemaker got bit.

If you think THIS season is weak, check out Coven or Freak Show! I think this season is great compared to those two. Actually find myself really looking forward to Wednesday nights now. I think the hotel as the center of the story helps give this season a coherence the last 2 lacked---it's almost like Briarcliff all over again. Not saying this season is perfect by any stretch---but as AHS goes, it's pretty good in my book.

I have not loved a TV character in a long time as much as I love LIZ TAYLOR!!! That is all.

Loved seeing Edna Garrett on the TV (when Liz was in pre-goddess phase watching The Facts of LIfe at home). Also LOVED the reference to Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing Sumner (Donna Mills) and her famous eye makeup from Knots Landing. I agree Liz's story was kind of generic but he really sold it. I am loving the duo of Iris and Liz. I hope Iris gets to glam it up some too. I was a big fan of Finn Wittrock last season, but I'm not really buying his character this year. Can't understand why the Countess would throw Bomer over for him. Is Ruth Fisher (Frances Conroy) going to be making an appearance this season? She is one of my favorites and I wish they would give her a shot at one of the main leads. I am so happy with this season so far. It is so much better than Coven and Freakshow. I find myself really looking forward to Wednesday nights.

Ryebread, I'm curious--what do you think lies beneath as concerns Connie?? I am not sure how I feel about her either, so I'm interested to see what you think.

So last night the Egber dad was telling the son that sits to the right that one day when he is married he will have to learn to defer to his wife (paraphrasing). The son and the mom sort of looked at each other and seemed to be stifling a laugh. I am wondering if the son is gay and the mom knows but they haven't told Papa Egber? Did anyone else catch that? I have always sort of assumed both Egber sons are gay. Which one is the older one? My favorite is Julie and Brandy. I immediately recognized Julie from the time she appeared on one episode of the Sopranos - Season 4. She played the daughter of Dr. Melfi's therapist colleauge who went to the same university as Meadow and got her to sign up to work at that legal aide center. I also love the Zenos. I like the gay guys, the Egbers, and the grannies as well. Least favorite is the Resnicks and the Persian sisters aren't really my favorite either. One of the sisters just tries a little too hard for me.

Totally agree this season so far is head and shoulders above Coven or (cringe) Freakshow. I thought it was weird that after being in a decades long loving relationship with Gaga, Angela was willing to throw her over the instant she saw Mo. I loved that scene when Gaga blew his head off and I LOVED Angela's narration.

Wow, Dane is one of the most completely unappealing people I've ever seen! Thank god he is gone. It is hard to fathom he actually has a girlfriend.
-
I guess now I know why I wasn't really that excited about the show coming back. It just is so clunky and unbelievable sometimes. That scene where Glenn and the other two had to clear the small building---I am sick of these scenes that happen all the time on this show that are so unbelievable. If they would have sat there and just shot the things there would be no problem, but we had to have the boring trope where the walkers get too close and then the inevitable 'saves'. Boring.

Our Little Family - General Discussion
Joan van Snark replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Our Little Family
I don't get the 'artistic' slo-mo the director uses every time there is some kind of action shot, like on last night's episode at the indoor play place. I don't know how one can tell that Uncle J is an alcoholic just by looking at him, but he does seem somewhat inappropriate in some of the things he says to Jack. The other brother is much more attractive than Uncle J. What is the birth order of their family? I kind of like Dan, but I agree with others that find absolutely no bond between Dan and Michelle or whatever the mother's name is. Jack is cute but has a really smart mouth. He is going to end up getting popped in school one day for mouthing off to the wrong person. He does appear to be quite intelligent---unlike the sisters, which I hate to say look vacant to me. -
Hmmmmm....guess I had a different experience because I thought it was very interesting for the most part. I honestly don't need to see zombie chases and killings every 5 minutes---we've pretty much seen all that ad nauseum. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. The son is a really good actor, although I can see how he might have a penchant for going a little over the top. Had no idea he was Stannis Baratheon's real life son. Honestly I find the 'mothership' quite boring at times. I think the LA/urban environment might make the show a lot more interesting. Sort of reminds me how I was overjoyed when Camp Dinner Bell made it to Alexandria and we got to see the group living day to day in a semi-normal environment instead the constant threat of zombie attack.

Have been recently watching the older episodes on Youtube--forgot how much I used to love Ina and this show! I have a rather specific question that I hope someone might be able to answer--- Ina almost always goes with clean white or solid colored plates. However, I have noticed on several occasions that she has used these very pretty white plates that have small blue flowers and green leaves or dots painted around the rim. I am assuming these are dessert plates as she is usually serving cake or some type of dessert on them. I will try to find a screen shot of them. Anyone remembers the dishes I am referring to? I am sure they are wildly expensive but maybe not? Also, I love love love the silver bowls Ina uses for her sauces and dips. So simple, elegant and classy. I saw once that at least one of them is monogrammed. Does anyone know if these are sterling silver or plated silver? Where can I get them or a good substitute? Finally, I find myself really paying attetion to her house as I watch. I love the gleaming honey colored pine floors you can see behind her in the shots where she is cooking on the burner. Has her house ever been photographed for one of the shelter magazines that anyone knows? I much prefer the episodes in her home kitchen rather than the barn. The barn is too austere and not enough color for me.

Zoila Chavez: Housekeeper Extraordinaire

Boy it sure is amazing how the tide has turned with Zoila. Almost everyone loved her at the beginning. Now it seems like it's the complete opposite. -
All Episodes Talk: Small World, Big Lives
Joan van Snark replied to NewOrleansLady's topic in Little People Big World
Can't believe they stretched that out for two hours---the wedding already happened like a year ago didnt' it? Surprised Matt can't come up with better show topics. I am surprised at all the chatter about Tori being with Zack just because of the show. I always found her to be sweet and she seems genuine in her love of Zack. She does not seem like the type that is all that comfortable with being on camera anyway so that theory just doesn't compute for me, but I could be wrong. Jer Bear's wife on the other hand really rubs me the wrong way for all the reasons others have mentioned above. Poor Jacob does seem so lost. Hope he finds himself and turns out OK. -
Cosign! Totally agree with you. I think Jeff realized (at least I hope so) that the crass humor was going a little too far and Andrew (thanks I couldnt even remember his name) was really grating. I loved the first several seasons of this show because they focused more on the renovations and the 'drama' was more organic. It was getting way too forced in the last couple seasons. Gage's new assistant is oddly fascinating. Let's see if he stays that way or turns out to be another Andrew. On another note--does anyone else think Chas Dean looks like a Thundercat?

S07.E14: Conch Blocked
Joan van Snark replied to motorcitymom65's topic in The Real Housewives Of New York City
Thank you! Did a much better job of explaining what I mean about Heather's grabbing people and pulling them off habit. It drives me crazy! Just let things go for once for god sake! A Heather/Bethenny 'team' would be insufferable in my opinion. Moaner, Sonja and Lu may have their faults, but they are entertaining! I don't want any 'team' taking over and shutting them down. I'm not really sure what that exactly means that H & B could 'run the franchise'. -

Ugh Heather rubs me the wrong way. I CANT STAND how everytime she gets in a fight with someone she wants to grab them and run off in some room to talk 'in private'. Does everything that happens have to be discussed ad nauseum? Just let it go geez louise.
