  1. Mischievous history students who hide old-looking documents all over the place, so they can laugh later when people base scholarly articles on them? Was Isaac's name in the diary? He did not seem to remember what he had written.
  2. Happy 99th birthday, Dick Van Dyke!
  3. The soon-to-be murder victim picked up a record with one hand, and his fingers touched the grooves. Not a capital crime, but a strike against him.
  4. Has Potts expressed an opinion on Ivy continuing to have a job if they marry? Now that Eliza and Ivy both have outside incomes, maybe they could hire someone to do the cooking. It would be fair for Potts to contribute if he expects to eat there. When Eliza agreed to go to dinner with the reporter that evening instead of postponing, I guessed she suspected something.
  5. The episode description says that the bed is a belated wedding present. But the wedding didn't happen. Are Isaac & Nigel allowed to keep the gift? We need an etiquette expert -- Hetty?
  6. Week 13: 2/5 + 1 * (War & Peace). For the "smell" FJ I said duck boots, which have rubber feet and leather ankles. I had a rough week so I'm bringing dark chocolate to share. Possibilities is bringing it too, but there won't be too much, right?
  7. According to thejeopardyfan, "The final song played before shutdown was Chopin’s “Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. posth.”; the same song was played on the resumption of broadcasting after the war in 1945. Władysław Szpilman, the pianist who played both nocturnes live, was the subject of the 2002 movie The Pianist." Video of Szpilman playing this nocturne in 1997.
  8. Week 12: 3/5, no *. Bringing potstickers with your choice of fillings.
  9. I feel sorry for the Coopers, not knowing any cranberry sauce besides canned. Georgie is left handed. At the dinner table, why was he sitting at the right-hand end of a row of people?
  10. For a moment I thought they might be these glasses for color blind people but those are for people with red-green color blindness, not those with complete color blindness like the artist in this episode.
  11. I enjoy this show a lot -- the architecture, and the characters, and the architecture, and the stories, and the architecture .... Has someone made a documentary of early 1900s Vienna, with clips from the show and more coverage of the places where the scenes were shot? If not, I wish they would!
  12. In the intro, my local station often includes a clip of three contestants walking onto the stage, seen from behind them. It is always the same clip AFAICT, so the people are not that day's contestants. I don't know what it accomplishes besides wasting a few seconds of airtime. At a publishing job I had, a colleague's husband graduated from an Episcopal (IIRC) seminary. He was required to work in a non-church job for a while before he would be assigned to a church. He got a job in our department, typing and copying etc.
  13. PBS article: Everything We Know About The Marlow Murder Club Season 2
  14. Week 11: 5/5 + 1 *. Bringing assorted beignets from the (imaginary) French bakery.
  15. When Cecily's dog Chase came home without Cecily, why didn't they ask the dog to find Cecily? Many dogs would understand and follow Cecily's scent.
  16. The "missing character" issue is not unique to this episode. Maybe there should be a thread for the staffing and economics of the show?

    Leonardo Da Vinci

I never studied art history, but as I understand it, Leonardo tried a lot of original techniques. Some worked (i.e. the paintings lasted) but some did not.

    Leonardo Da Vinci

So am I. When I was about 11, I read a biography of Leonardo. I'm left handed so I wrote the book report in mirror writing, the way he wrote his notebooks. My teacher was annoyed; maybe she didn't know how to read it.
  19. Cocaine? I thought it was her travel sweets and the powdered sugar.
  20. She was known as "Lemonade Lucy."
  21. Week 10: 3/5 + 1 * YTD: 33/50 + 6 *
  22. I remembered November 1 is All Saints' Day because once I was in Europe at that time, and every place I wanted to see was closed that day. Luckily the trains were running and I had a rail pass, so it was all scenery day.
  23. Presumably you mean Mandy's brother. I'd be annoyed at the writers for giving Mandy a name so similar to Missy and Mary, if I had enough annoyance left over from other situations.
  24. Someone once pointed out that the world's most common first name is Mohammed, and the most common last (family) name is Wang, so shouldn't the most common name be Mohammed Wang?
  25. Week 9: 4/5. Bringing baba ganoush and fresh pita.
