Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
kassygreene replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
I hear that a lot in the local stores, usually along the lines of mother saying "Sister, don't hit Brother". But I am in the South. -
The colors of the stripe on the shirt immediately took me to Four's first scarf.

Long Lost Family - General Discussion
kassygreene replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Long Lost Family
I think it's entirely possible that the non-id records were accurate enough, and that the birth mother thought the other guy was the bio-father (or hoped he was), but he had no intention of marrying her even if he was there for the birth. It's also possible that conception occurred in some sort of mutual drunken haze.... Darby doesn't remember Sharon; Sharon is dead; the only family member (the brother) that Show reported on was already grown and gone when all this happened.... It was 1965/66? Lies to protect reputations and feelings were easy to tell. The only certainty in this was the DNA, and if the circumstances of conception were too non-G for TLC (which is really straining my credulity, considering TLC's line-up), then all we have is a mystery. -
Spoilers & Speculation: Running Hot & Cold

Never SAY that! Go outside, spin three times (counter-clockwise), spit, and apologize before you bring down The Wrath Of The Whatever From High Atop The Thing. HURRY! -
Amir was the New Guy in the pilot, who had some of his own ideas but settled down and in. Jaz was thoroughly competent, but even then not happy with her last partner's replacement. In this episode Jaz is still not happy, but learning. Amir is revealed to in fact be an extremely experienced, confident, and competent operative, and also an extremely good cook. Show is eschewing the tropes. Show pleases me. Show is therefore not going to make it, while CBS Soapy Show gives the angsty vampire another 6-8 years of work.

It was Whiting who got the confession, and then didn't die, in no small part because Deeks was keeping pressure on the hole in her neck (right carotid artery, I think).

The point of entailment was to keep estates intact, and not split them up if you had many sons and most or all of them survived to adulthood. The eldest inherited the lot, one would go to the army, perhaps a second to the navy, one to the church, etc. But the eldest son got it all; his sisters would have dowries and be expected to marry well. In my grade school history book (in the '60s) I remember specific mention of primogeniture, and how it was considered A Bad Thing in the colonies. The younger sons came here and established their own great estates, but they pointedly did not practice primogeniture.

Last Word used to be M-Th. Rachel's Friday sign-off was always about it's now time to go to prison (Lockup - meh). So LOD structured his work week that way a long time ago. The last many months there has been so much going on that the primetime regulars & the network (I think wisely) have made their schedules a bit more flexible. And with Joy, Ari, and now Ali (? who I think comes from CNBC) being both strong (and willing) relief players who have their own shows too, there isn't a drop in quality, just an adjustment in viewing.

All Episodes Discussion: 2017 Season
kassygreene replied to AmandaPanda's topic in The Rachel Maddow Show
Ow. Are you to young for 1993? Back then, who didn't care? Even Don Bellasario, who was apparently the only producer in Hollywood who had actually met LHO and been vastly unimpressed by him, wrote an episode of Quantum Leap about the Kennedy assassination. Believe me, lots of grizzled people care, and they are probably going to be bitching right through the weekend. And it's not a metaphor, it's a concrete example of the incompetence. He's been boasting about the document release for days, and it's been scheduled for twenty-five years. -
It's laudanum, which is an opiate. So at first it numbed her, then the addictive bit kicks in, and it keeps her in a permanent state of "don't care".

I forced myself to watch the entire pilot before giving myself permission to "cancel" without watching the second episode. I strongly suspected from the commercials that the parental characters would irritate the hell out of me, and they did.

Starvation, fear of imminent death, bad living conditions, fear in general; these are factors that reduce intelligence. Plus, 18th-century people haven't read as many books or seen as many movies & tv shows as we have. You either speak up for yourself or be left behind.... Of course, he wound up with option three, death.

TDS 3.0: Season Three Talk
kassygreene replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
Something retired senior officers can have trouble dealing with is having their pronouncements (and orders) disregarded, or even questioned. A friend of mine who retired after 20 as a lieutenant colonel nearly twenty years ago still has problems with her civilian subordinates not getting things done. Generals don't get lip from subordinates. Four-stars (who in peacetime must have political skills to get that rank) don't get questioned or contradicted. Frankly, I think Patton would have done a better job then Kelly did. -
All this, and the Ambassador's wife, who we initially saw shopping with a certain air (the persona that I call tennis-bracelet-wearing-arm-with-perfectly-manicured-hand-waving-imperiously) turned out to be just as badass as Jaz. Well written, well played.

The show has Steve actually doing stuff in terms of personnel management that a good manager/commander (or perhaps XO) would do. He did this occasionally in earlier seasons, especially a few times with Chin, but he is acting that way with Tani & Junior and I find it believable and well done. I also am really really liking Beulah Koale and I am looking forward to "Thank You For Your Service". He also worked with Frankie Adams (The Expanse) on "One Thousand Ropes", another film I will have to track down. (Just what I need, more stuff to watch.)

Season 11 Spoilers and Spoiled Speculation
kassygreene replied to FormerMod-a1's topic in The X-Files [V]
Scully is seriously badass, seriously smart, and seriously seriously loyal to her friends. She could have used Mulder to get to a fantastic career but she stayed honest to her self. Once Skinner showed he was not a mindless lackey - I believe it was the episode called Trinity? - she became loyal to him (but he could always betray that). I think she's that rare female that the showrunners crushed on without screwing up the character. -
The iPlayer is strictly UK, as the page will tell you if you ain't there. The episode isn't up at this Time Of Writing, but it will be on BBCAmerica. You can sign in there with Facebook or Google+ or some other choices, let the site sign you in to your provider (mine is Xfinity), and you can watch episodes. The full interview isn't there either, but it might be later today.

Season 4 Talk
kassygreene replied to OtterMommy's topic in Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr. [V]
I would guess that this happened while he was filming Shameless, where he is supposed to look like crap. He dirties down nicely. -
Elizabeth considers Valentine the reason she was trapped into marrying George. If she hadn't been pregnant she could have continued as the impoverished widow indefinitely. On the other hand, women of her class hand the baby off to the nursery; they don't keep the cradle in their room.

Ah, but Combat ran for five seasons, 152 (1-hour!) episodes, which broke down to 32 episodes in each of seasons 1-3, 31 in season 4, & 25 in season 5. Splitting up the regulars was kind of necessary.
-
They originally had the day off to move into their new apartment. Those were perfectly fine moving day clothes. Like all modern television procedurals, the entire case took place in a day. Or overnight with no time to go home and change. Fact of Hollywood life, and makes for easier shooting continuity (although how you keep continuity with torn up jeans baffles me).
-
She already lives in CA, at least for shooting season, although I think she is also still a part owner of that bakery (?) in NYC.

She did miss her heart by centimeters. Also by inches, each of which contains 2.54 centimeters. I suppose to an American (Imperial Units) jury, centimeters sounds closer.
