Drummond really existed, really was Peel's private secretary, and really was a decade or two older than he is being portrayed. Paget really existed, was also somewhat older, and came to Court later than Drummond's actual time in government. And the Duchess really existed, was MUCH younger than she is being portrayed, and became a good friend to the Queen. As far as I can remember, Leopold was never a rumored contender. Albert's mother did apparently either have affairs or suffered the consequences of being a wife who left her brutish husband and therefore had her history written by him. One of her rumored lovers was rumored to be Albert's father. Daisy Goodwin hasn't cared much about historical accuracy (this was well established in the first season), so there is no reason to expect her to start. From the impressions I've formed of Victoria over many years of reading stuff, I think that the times she got to be a "working woman" were greatly enjoyed (no matter how much she whined), while the times when she was an ordinary woman (i.e. pregnant) were not enjoyed and she was always eager to get back to work. Also, for such a tiny thing, nine pregnancies in 17 (?) years is a lot to deal with. I read a book sometime in the last year covering the period of her death, and how in the post mortem her doctor of many years standing was able, for the very first time, to do an actual physical examination of her body. Among other things, she had a prolapsed uterus. If that dates from her last childbirth (more than forty years earlier), OUCH!

The doctor lost any credibility with me when he cited the "good genes". My follow-up question would be which genes, which scientific body's definition of "good", and how did you sequence the Drumpf genome that quickly? Otherwise this guy sounded like a fractionally less loopy version of Trump's civilian doctor. -

I can't tell if Gaetz isn't planning to run for statewide office someday (Senate or Governor), or if he thinks his automatic privileges will protect him. Florida has a lot of Haitians, and a still rapidly growing number of Puerto Ricans, and the fact that these populations are pretty much frozen out of the panhandle doesn't mean they don't legitimately vote. Anyway, a guy who is one of the few who kept his license after declining the breathalyzer probably has an inflated view of his own special status. -

I loved that George tried to point out that Jeff was pulling the tape off in the wrong direction. -

Gaetz is not my Rep (we got Neal Dunn, a different kind of fool), but he is a chip off his old man's block. White Florida Republicans from the panhandle are socially fellow travelers of folk like Jeff Sessions. He also has quite the punchable face, doesn't he? -
The Duchess was on the list of Ladies approved by the Conservative Party, which was then in power, and why Peel was the PM. The household ladies are female relatives of the ministers of the party in power. Which is why the Bedchamber Crisis, a few years earlier, was such a big deal.

Um, the kid wandering the Palace was The Boy Jones. Although I don't think he knew parkour.

And in yesterday's Mistake (this is how HNN was describing it Saturday, which is my only direct contact to the islands), someone fat-fingered an "Are You Sure?" screen. All of which arose from what seem to be really stupid practices for shift-change. I used to have a job task which was basically nagging people to use good business processes that provide safeguards against this sort of nonsense - people tend to prefer the silly rituals that evolve, right up to the point they catastrophically break down, embarrass the hell out of management, and lead to the sacking of the most convenient scapegoat. Also, I am amazed and dismayed by the number of people who just ran around in a panic, especially the guy who checked out of his hotel, and uber'd to the airport, expecting to get on the next plane out. Of course I grew up in the Cold War (under the permanently potential shadow of a mushroom cloud); I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis (I was six), and I remember knowing then that the school safety practices (file out into the hall, get down on our knees against the wall, put our heads down and cover them with our hands) were ridiculous. (It turned out to be useful advice for tornado warnings, however.) And now Hawaii can see just how fatuous the assumptions have been, and fix them.

Not disagreeing here, but Suez was Anthony Eden. Macmillan was the next PM, because of how badly Eden handled Suez.

Since the ensemble that played the team were very very good, and now apparently our very very gone, I'm not watching this reboot of a pre-boot unless it gets very very genuine raves. So, probably not. Pity, that was a good cast, and the characters were written really well.

All Episodes Talk: TRMS 2018 Season
kassygreene replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Rachel Maddow Show
I doubt that was the official transcript, if there was one (this WH certainly will edit even the P). It was my impression that the actual purpose of the conference call may never have been reached, since the call's organizers (i.e., the WH) weren't, shall we say, skilled. But if all that pre-call audio was available (apparently at least one reporter recorded it), then the network transcribing it on its own (with translations!) is pure gold. It was also hilarious. -
We don't know that that is JAG headquarters. The exterior was a different building. For filming purposes, the JAG bullpen with exterior windows works better than a cube farm retro-fitted into a narrow room or wide corridor in an older building, but both sets of offices are realistic (I have worked in both kinds). And Bud isn't necessarily working out of JAG HQ - there is lots of military in the DC area, even if NCIS Show and JAG Show both kept sending their people all over.

I think there is a special dispensation when the word is an actual quote of the President. Even Rachel Maddow quoted it, and she hates that kind of language. -
I'm pretty sure this is Johnny Depp.

I quit Blue Bloods at the end of the fifth season, when I realized that the only character worth watching was Baker. Otherwise every character with Reagan DNA and most of the actors who played them made me rage. All that eye candy on Magnum PI on Thursday nights was what got me through the work week - I would never have believed that a Sellick performance could lose me (even though I haven't liked the actor that much since he shilled for the National Review.

Strictly my impression, but if this is a paid caregiver, then the relationship was abused - by her. I of course can't tell if he has the cognitive ability to enter a consensual relationship, but sorry, on the simple facts as you recounted them, the person being paid is exploiting the person in her care whatever the "true feelings" are. My brother has autism; he would never ever EVER be able to enter a consensual relationship with anyone, and any caregiver who did that would (as far as I had the power to make it happen) be facing criminal charges. That the facility immediately fired her is as much for their protection as your father's, as they have (on the simple facts as you recounted them), failed to fulfill their duty of care. Please remember your family and the facility will have different priorities, and don't let them fast-talk you into any kind of settlement. Take gender out of it - it's the same crime/malfeasance/skeevy behavior either way.

I think it may have been more an issue of not taking ALL of the luggage in to Kenya. It's a lot of luggage - one of the first books on QEII I ever read (more than fifty years ago), which was published I think in 1965, spent some time on the piles of luggage during the re-scheduled 1953/54 trip - apparently repeating outfits on official engagements was very much a No - and it was a six-month trip. SO I think it was more a matter of a black dress not getting packed into the subset of luggage intended for the stay in Kenya, but going on to the next stop where I think they were going to board a ship and head east.

Waalll..... this picture is one of a bunch that were stolen. If I remember correctly, this one was taken by Prince Phillip.

He didn't write another book (and/or stopped writing), and then lost his money in a hedge fund.

I managed, completely by accident, to be spoiled not once but twice by deaths in season 3 of Downton Abbey. I was on some British site looking at or for something completely non-tv when I saw a headline about Sybil's death, and how shocking it was. Then, on Boxing Day, I was on wikipedia checking the episode count and discovered what happened to Matthew.

I think there is one more, "City of Angels?", currently scheduled for January 1.
