I think for Kate it's just a matter of "just do your job" syndrome. I totally get it. OMG YES! I live in Los Angeles, and the homes in my neighborhood are hitting $700k for 900 sq ft (we bought for way less), have a son and a stay at home dad, so we are stretched, but we get by and I'm not over $100k!
