  1. I like The Crown, but no way it was better than S4 of The Americans (which, sadly, wasn't even nominated). Ditto Claire Foy's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth. She's good, but Keri Russell is better.
  2. Wow, this seems like a stretch, and even SJP said so. Sarah Jessica Parker pays tribute to Carrie Fisher at Golden Globes Her GG hair reminded me of The Catch -- not a good look on her then OR now, IMO.
  3. Agreed re Foy. She was mostly tasked with playing a cipher, IMO. I would have preferred Keri Russell in this category. I also think S4 of The Americans was better drama than The Crown, but TA wasn't even nominated. I haven't seen The Night Manager, but now feel like I should.
  4. Please point me to the condescension toward poor people in Meryl Streep's remarks. I heard her talking about the need for leaders to show empathy and respect for all people.
  5. No shit. The Crown is good, but it often gives its characters lines that feel like a way to sneak in a history lesson for uninformed viewers rather than realistic dialog. This past season of The Americans was impeccable.
  6. The wording on the voiceover was "now with Golden Globe winner tonight for Florence Foster Jenkins, Hugh Grant" which startled me, making me wonder if I'd missed an award. Grant won the GG for 4WaaF over 2 decades ago.
  7. All the TV people are way in the back, aren't they? I squeed when TRE won. I find blackish pretty consistently entertaining and occasionally thought-provoking as well.
  8. I wouldn't blame you even without that revealing story. JT has long struck me as overrated both musically and as a human being.
  9. Well, vice versa for me. I think the actor portraying Margaret, in particular, is a stunner. And ditto on Ben Miles being a dead ringer for Peter Townsend.
  10. Reminded me of Sarah Palin in Game Change always having to "pivot" to energy, as it's the only topic her advisers felt she had some command of.
  11. Joely Fisher has paid tribute to her sister, Carrie, in Variety. For those who were curious about Joely referring to Debbie Reynolds as Mama, the piece notes that:
  12. Their story has been romanticized, but the reality appears to have been quite different. A very odd pair, indeed. Seems to be a pretty good assumption, given that Edward VII appears never to have sired any children despite many alleged sexual relations with many different women.
  13. Second. She had divorced her first husband, Earl Spencer, and was married to her second husband, Ernest Simpson, when she met David/Edward. Per Wikipedia: She must have had some personality and/or sexual prowess to make up for that face and lack of figure.
  14. Did you mean "knowing he was supporting Alan Alda"? Because that seemed obvious from the start. It's kinda funny how Hawkeye, Frank, and Margaret saw BJ as this much younger, malleable doctor joining their jaded, experienced cadre, when IRL Farrell was the same age as Larry Linville and just a few years younger than Alda and Swit.
  15. Thanks, BW. I had forgotten about her adopted daughter with Burton.
  16. Taylor didn't have any children after Liza Todd -- Mike Todd had her sterilized while she was still under anesthetic from that difficult delivery. She'd previously had two children with Michael Wilding.
  17. Those were Debbie's only children. But Carrie and Todd had/have half-siblings through their father.
  18. Why? I understand the desire to want to believe this, but I think it's much more likely that after death is like before birth: nothing. That said, the timing re Ms. Reynolds' passing strikes me as incredibly cruel for her son and granddaughter. RIP, Kathy Selden.
  19. Not to mention the child actors playing Charles and Anne were too old. When the King underwent surgery in Sept. 1951, Charles was not yet 3 years old (born Nov. 1948) and Anne was only 13 months. The kids looked more like 5 and 3. I know it's difficult to cast very young children, especially when they have lines, but I found this very distracting.
  20. Wasn't she pregnant for a chunk of that season? I seem to recall that's why it was cut short (only 6 episodes).
  21. Crappy video quality, but still hilarious: Carrie Fisher on 30 Rock.
