  1. Just saw that Jenny Slate (Mona Lisa) is playing a therapist who falls in love with her client's brother (played by Jon freakin' Hamm) in a new indie movie called Aardvark.
  2. I have never watched New Girl. Other than the fact that I hate its title (I have a serious aversion to titles that refer to adult women as girls), I have no opinion about this.
  3. But we're talking about the show and what Carrie actually did. :-) She certainly had the right to walk away, choosing smoking over Aidan. She also had the right to stop smoking so that she could be with Aidan. She did not have the right to lie to him about how much she smoked so that she could try to have both.
  4. A right she didn't exercise. She wanted to have her cake and smoke it, too.
  5. It was their first date: "Carrie's smoking becomes a problem when she goes on her first date with Aidan Shaw." As others have noted, Aidan didn't insist on anything other than his position that "I can't date a smoker." So what's Carrie's response? She lies. Says she hardly smokes at all. This site explains it well:
  6. I think with Ray, a lot of his aversion to new experiences stems from insecurity. He's always afraid he'll say or do the wrong thing. Which, of course, makes him more likely to put his foot in it. :-)
  7. I had given up on this show after two aired episodes, but it's in the video library available at my health club and perfect for my elliptical machine workouts. This episode was probably my favorite so far. Each segment was funny and close to believable. I loved the Nanny winking at Colin Hanks to signify he had tipped her off to the wife's arrest. Perfect!
  8. In any other year, I'd be pulling for Kirsten Dunst, but Sarah Paulson was so damned good as Marcia Clark in The People vs. OJ. Tough break.
  9. The ATAS seems to change the voting and eligibility rules every year. According to this document for 2016, Princess Sparkle is correct. Voters may, however, request a ballot for a second peer group (see p. 7 re HYPHENATE BALLOTS).
  10. I loved Garry Marshall in A League of Their Own. Wish I could find online clips of his scenes with Tom Hanks. One in particular stands out. Hanks, as the manager of the Rockford Peaches, is annoyed by Mr. Harvey's (Marshall's) insistence that he "give the crowd what they want." That leads to this exchange, which Marshall deadpanned perfectly:
  11. From GQ's profile of Melanoma (sorry, a friend has started calling her that and I couldn't resist.) Why did this immediately make me think of Carrie and Big?
  12. Sharpie66, PaHR is certainly atmospheric. Worth a look as an early work of Weir's, I think. I agree with you about Witness.
  13. My understanding is that the voters are under no obligation to watch ANYTHING before voting for nominations. Seriously, the sheer volume of televised material these days would make this impossible. This is why the forces cited by BW Manilowe kick in. Once nominees are selected, however, there's an "honor system" to watch the nominated entries (only 5 to 7 per category) before voting for a winner.
  14. That's what I thought, too, Rinaldo, but damn. D'Angelo basically didn't have a choice about joining the "family business" and then he didn't have a choice about leaving it, except through death. Stringer was one cold MoFo.
  15. Could someone clarify for me why Stringer had D'Angelo killed? I seem to recall this was his directive, behind Avon's back. Or was Avon in on it, too? D'Angelo didn't seem like a "snitch" risk, he just wanted to do his time and then maybe have a chance at getting on with another life. His arc was fascinating, and his demise was heart-breaking.
  16. LOL, I think Brimley is one of those people who was born looking old, like Ed Asner. But it is an interesting bit of trivia. :-)
  17. I'm with you up to a point, but the tide turned earlier for me. Rather than repeating myself, I'll refer you to this post I wrote in the Carrie thread a while back, if you are interested.
  18. Not much, and nothing particularly award-worthy that I can recall. But Martindale seems to be in the automatic nomination category right now, due to name recognition or something. Ruthie Ann Miles as Young Hee was a much more memorable guest star this past season.
  19. Amen, amen, amen. I'd have been happy with Patrick Wilson from Fargo in that slot, too, but Isaac was outstanding in Show Me A Hero.
  20. And pregnancy No. 2 coincided with Shelley Long's lone pregnancy (season 3), but they did not write that into the show. What's a little weird is that Carla's youngest, Gino, was 7 at the start of S1, so she'd gone a long time without getting knocked up.
  21. Thrilled that Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg got a writing nom for The Americans (“Persona Non Grata”), but perplexed that they're keeping company with Robert King and Michelle King for The Good Wife's POS finale. Also, when did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler become one person? Seriously, there is a single guest actress in a comedy nom for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live.
  22. So I visited a Budapest ruin bar called Szimpla Kert as part of a Jewish Quarter walking tour, and was delighted to hear I will not buy this record, it is scratched in some kind of mash-up they were playing.
  23. Olyphant didn't make much of an impression on me in his SatC episode. When I started watching Justified, I didn't realize it was the same actor. I hadn't watched Deadwood, either. As Raylan Givens, though, he was deep-fried sex-on-a-stick.
  24. I haven't watched The Leftovers yet, but I've seen Coon on stage in Chicago, and she is good
  25. I believe that comes in Ep. 2-13, Battle of the Exes, when Sam and Carla are alone at the bar after Nick's wedding to Loh-ret-ta. But I agree that it's a great moment!
