S43.E03: Kumail Nanjiani / P!nk
Inquisitionist replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Saturday Night Live
Were Kyle Mooney or Pete Davidson in any sketches last night? If so, they didn't make an impression on me. "Featured Players" Mikey Day and Alex Moffat seem to be getting much more air-time. -

Was that Alex Moffat? He seems to have a pretty good range of impressions. -

Was GG reading cue cards in WW? ;-) That is pretty funny. I tend to listen more than watch so I think I missed this nuance. -
Yeah, I've wondered about that as well. Part of the charm and humor of Episodes has been watching Matt LeBlanc play a version of himself that is very fictionalized. But the Matt LeBlanc that Sean and Beverly are basing a series around has actually DONE all the shitty things that we've been watching. Do they make fictional Matt even more over-the-top or are they basically writing a documentary comedy series? It is a bit perplexing. :-)

Whew, it wasn't just me. I thought he was noticeably flat, and my ear isn't even all that discerning. Like you, I tended to overlook that under the circumstances. -
Congrats to everyone who called the ending. I thought it was well executed, and I'll also miss the show. I think it's time for a rewatch. :-)

Ha! I thought it sounded a bit familiar.

Really? I was actually thinking "When did they get writers who know how to end a sketch?" I thought several were short, snappy, and ended quite well. I have no idea what BEC is, but I skipped over his songs. Have heard him on the radio and have no idea why he's considered such hot shit. -

Co-sign. Gadot is a class act and impressed me a lot. -

Thought it was much better than last week's, but not as good as the Buck Henry/Tom Petty episode from 1979 that aired earlier in the evening. And that was from the season they lost Ackroyd and Belushi. -
All Episodes Talk: Just Don't Eat a Fly
Inquisitionist replied to zxy556575's topic in Everybody Loves Raymond [V]
Some other bits of physical comedy I love are: Ray trying to pry Debra from the suitcase on the landing in Baggage. Ray trying to copy Robert's lifting of Amy onto the top of the refrigerator in The Home only to end up slamming her into the fridge instead. Ray describing that Angela ate the fly. I'm sure you all can come up with many more! -
Ha! Love this. From the article: Wow, that sounds like overselling. While sort of admitting long after the fact that SATC 2 stunk, she said in a Vanity Fair interview earlier this year: Well, as long as she gets her meaningful experiences (and payday), then I guess all is right with the world!

Just out of curiosity, what is a teacher who "cares" about his students supposed to do in this situation? As I recall it, Ally's problem was that she didn't pay attention in class. The teacher brought this to her parents' attention. Aren't they then supposed to deal with the problem and get their child to focus? I agree that the actor was terrific!

Twenty-Five Years After Its Heyday, Is Cheers Still Funny?
Inquisitionist replied to Primetimer's topic in Cheers [V]
You know, I felt that way, too, but I must say that I enjoyed rewatching the KA years (except S6 -- her introduction was a bit rough) much more than I'd anticipated. I just think of it as a somewhat different TV series using familiar characters. -
Holy crap. I'd had no idea. Thanks for the link, vb68.

I think this is true of a lot of sitcoms. From what I recall reading and hearing in interviews, they wanted the Barone homelife to mirror Ray Romano's but without having Ray Barone be a stand-up comic. So they made him a sportswriter as something that would seem to have a bit of status as well as flexibility for him to be home or traveling as storylines dictated. The focus was never really on his job: it was about the comic aspects of relationships between adult children and their parents. As long as the show made me laugh from a place of essential truth, I cut it a lot of slack on the details -- and I usually did laugh quite a bit. My Italian mother certainly has the type of spotless, well-organized household you're describing! :-)

I found the boar stuff hilarious. Terrific episode all around!

I think they rotate the categories that have acting clips from year to year. It might be male leads in comedy and female supporting in dramas one year, and female leads in dramas/male supporting in comedies another. I think it takes too long to feature clips for all nominees in all acting categories. I tried to watch the first episode, but couldn't make it through. I forgot to record the broadcast while out of the country, so I missed this. Who made the DW shoutout? Yeah, most of the critics viewed omission of The Leftovers as the biggest Emmy snub this year. I see someone has already pointed out that the saleswoman was played by Mary Pat Gleason, but isn't it funny how we can be so sure of our memory and yet completely wrong? ;-)
