  1. I liked it better the second time around also; perhaps because my expectations were lower. I didn't like Sidney either; I never understood the transition from Sidney and Charlotte disliking each other to them suddenly being so in love. Since I dozed off a bit both times around, just about the time this happened, perhaps I missed something. Did I? I did like how Lady Babbington woke up and became free of her brother; I thought Lord Babbington was very insightful in how he recognized how Edward had been manipulating her and virtually held her prisoner. I look forward to seeing her in her new life. (Side note: throughout season one I kept seeing her possibly playing Queen Elizabeth 1, I think she would make a good fit.) I think season 2 starts next week; I am looking forward to that.
  2. Well, the rest of the book can be summed up as getting to know the other characters, with Charlotte having a very small part as an observer to them. We learn a whole lot more about them, and pretty much nothing about Charlotte.
  3. I am just starting to read the Austen version of Sanditon. First chapter: The carriage overturns, Charlotte's father, not Charlotte, go to their aid. Charlotte is not mentioned at all, except as "my daughters". Difference number one. Chapter 2 - All about Mr. Parker and his ambitions for Sanditon. Chapter 3 - All about Lady Denham. Chapter 4 - The remainder of the carriage ride to Sanditon. At the very end, it mentions Charlotte being given the apartment where she will be staying. Chapter 5 - All about the health complaints of Parker's sisters and brother. Charlotte is mentioned only as being there while Parker is reading his sister's letter aloud. (So far Charlotte is not a main character in the story; she is barely given any notice.)
  4. A lot of pretty people... Is being on these shows Tyson's career? Or is he doing something else? Will this be on CBS or on one of those special channels?
  5. I never thought Connie and Dale were a good match, so I'm glad they broke up. What I would love to see now is not another boyfriend for Connie - I would love for Reba to come back and be her best pal, and they could go on adventures together. I think that would be a hoot!
  6. I just bought the Austen-only version for Kindle, it was only 99 cents. If anyone doesn't have an e-reader, you can read it on the Amazon website from your Amazon library. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09242ZM3Z
  7. One of the flaws I found in Davies' version was a way in which it was not faithful to Jane Austen. I don't think she would ever have had Charlotte witnessing Sidney rising naked from the ocean, or Clara giving Edward a hand job. Even the semi-incestuous relationship between Esther and Edward, even though they were not technically brother and sister, did not seem like something she would have written. I am tempted to buy the original unfinished version of the book to see what Davies was working from.
  8. I was looking at the different versions of Sanditon on Amazon. There are several, from just the fragment that Jane Austen wrote to others where the story was finished by other authors. I was surprised to see that the PBS version was written by Andrew Davies; I have enjoyed his other Austen adaptations, but with them he had a whole book to work with, rather than finishing Austen's beginning on his own. I don't think he did as well with Sanditon. It was interesting to read the reviews of each version. They (the different versions) all seemed to go in different directions. One of them presented Sydney as witty, humorous and charming rather than the unpleasant jerk he was here. (I had the impression that Davies was trying to set up a Darcy/Elizabeth dynamic. Fail!) One version was given a sad ending, which Austen never did in her books, as far as I know. There were many other differences. It will be interesting to see how season two plays out.
  9. I am enjoying this show more the second time around, since I do not have the high expectations I had for the first airing and therefore am not disappointed. I still dislike the two main characters, Charlotte and Sidney, but I'm finding the other storylines more interesting. One of the things I still find jarring is that Charlotte seems like an imitation Jane Austen character, with her style of speaking and her mannerisms, while the other characters seem more like real people. Plus she always mumbles her lines, and tilts her head any time she is talking to someone. I blame the writer for the bad dialogue, but blame the actress for the mumbling and head-tilting. Sidney is just a jerk. Nothing more to add. I hope season two is better...
  10. Yes. She wanted both of them - Edward and his sister - to marry wealth so they would stop mooching off her.
  11. Can't find an air date, but one more bit of information - it will run 50 days instead of the usual (or usual pre-covid) 39.

  13. Perhaps it is becoming a single parent that made a difference. Having to raise three children/teenagers on her own might have strained her patience enough that she changed, especially since now she had to pay more attention to all three of them, and didn't have George to help out with the other two while she focused on Sheldon.

  15. Wow. I guess I will just have to accept that I don't understand this discussion and leave it at that.
  16. For those of you who are criticizing him, I am curious to know what you think he should have done. As he stated, his main goal was to communicate his status to his family, so not posting was not an option. So what exactly are you criticizing him for?
  17. It's easy for those of us sitting here in the comfort and safety of our homes to judge what others do or do not do in any situation. But unless we have been in the middle of a city that is being pounded into rubble by missiles, knowing we could die at any minute, we cannot know what that is like. Maks's main goal was to communicate with the people close to him and let them know how he was doing. We do not have his full story. We shouldn't assume he did nothing to help anyone else, although I don't know what he could have done (any suggestions?) No doubt now that he is home he will be approached to do interviews, and he can tell us everything about his experience. We have mainly the media to show us the bigger picture, but he can speak for the people. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
  18. What I find interesting about the difference between YS Mary and BBT Mary is that by BBT she has learned how to manage Sheldon instead of baby him - she has become a "Sheldon wrangler", as it were. There were several episodes that highlighted this.
  19. My question answered - the first two episodes of season 1 are on PBS tonight (in Arizona).
  20. I felt sorry for the Oracle sitting on her throne for three hours, intoning "Leave no stone unturned" at intervals. I wonder if she was able to take bathroom breaks.

  23. Loved the two women bonding at the end. And loved the computer booby-trapped to prevent sabotage!
  24. I have put my finger on why this season seems a bit off plumb for me. The racers seem to be going through the race in their own bubble, rather than really interacting with the countries, their people, their cultures, their everyday lives, the way the race usually goes. Understandable, of course, under the circumstances. But here they have their own plane to fly between countries rather than the usual airport/ticket scrambles, no public transportation, carefully managed settings where there are other people involved, everything is sanitized to keep everyone as safe as possible. Which is good. But it does make the race feel like it is missing something integral, something that is one of my favorite things about a race around the world.
  25. I hope they replay season 1 first; I don't remember much of it.
