  1. Something I don't understand...why are the shopkeepers holding Tom responsible for the debts of the army?
  2. That was a rough challenge. I wonder what they would have done if they hadn't had a Hercules and a semi-Hercules on each team, with no one who could do what they did.
  3. Charlotte had a whole grunch of siblings, so it makes sense that her sister would come to stay with her to share her good fortune. The other work where a sister, one of a whole grunch of siblings, comes to stay with the oldest sister is Mansfield Park. I didn.t realize Davies was no longer the writer on this series. That explains why it is so much better.
  4. I could see her needing to spread her wings more now. Side note: My sister is 74, and being courted by a 74 year old gentleman. He travels a lot, hikes, skies, fishes, has a large social circle, and a large family circle. This is very different from her first marriage; it would be a new phase in her life. Maybe Connie could use that kind of change. (Of course, we don't know what her marriage was like, as far as I remember.) I do seem to remember her saying she would like to travel.
  5. During their conversation I was amused that Mike saw himself on the same level as Jonathan/Hercules. But then I saw them in the challenge, and Mike was pretty impressive for his team, so I forgive him.
  6. Connie needs someone with an adventurous spirit, not a science guy or a curmudgeon, but someone she can relate to.
  7. This is part of why I can only watch this show by separating it from Austen's work. It has so far strayed from her style that they should be ashamed to use her name in connection with it.
  8. She has seen the antagonism between the two, and I think she is not willing to believe anything either one of them says against the other. She wants to know the whole story. Basically, both of them have told her to stay away from the other. She isn't going to accept that from either of them.
  9. She may show up for some other reason. They have mentioned a few times that she is now part owner of Sanditon.
  10. I think she was skeptical when he warned her about Colbourne, as he wouldn't tell her anything specific. She didn't like that.
  11. Wouldn't that be cool - a nice plot twist!
  12. Edward is the one who suggested Sanditon to Lennox, so he could be close to Esther. As to your other questions, I don't know how those things work. I did think it was odd that they would come to a place like Sanditon - and especially to possibly build a permanent barracks there.
  13. My favorite part of the episode was Charlotte shutting Lennox down when he tried to mansplain how to shoot an arrow. I think Colbourne mishandled that situation. After Charlotte hit the bullseye, rather than putting her on the spot and asking her to shoot for him, he should have just said, "I concede to Miss Heywood, who is the true winner of this competition" and then walked away.
  14. Here is the snarky recap for this episode: https://www.wgbh.org/programs/2022/04/10/sanditon-season-2-episode-4-recap-an-indecent-proposal
  15. According to her thread here, she is a seminary student... And a pet peeve is when people don't listen to her.
  16. I was wondering how they would resolve that situation. I think having her leave is the best solution.
  17. Andrew Davies has done a brilliant job adapting Austen and other authors for TV series. But here he was only given the beginnings of Sanditon to work with, and is not doing as great a job with it. He relies too much on parts of other Austen stories (and other authors) and drags them in, only partially disguised. I find his work at writing original stories a bit disappointing. As someone else mentioned somewhere above, this actress is a wonderful character - my favorite, in fact - in Lark Rise to Candleford, playing Margaret Brown. It is a beautiful series, I highly recommend it!
  18. Since all the people we saw rushing to go up were men, perhaps they didn't want to be shown up by a "mere girl" having more courage than them.
  19. I think Edward was in fact trying to seduce Esther, but she always backed off. But he certainly was emotionally abusing her. I so want Esther to have a happy ending. If this were a real Austen story, she would, but here, who knows? Perhaps Babbington can make a cameo appearance at the end, to wrap up a happily ever after.
  20. Lennox actually said, Colbourne stole Lucy away from him and then "destroyed" her. Which does not necessarily mean got her pregnant, as "ruined" would, so I think it is something different. But we can't trust anything he said anyway, so we will just have to wait to find out. This whole scene reminds me of Wickham telling his story about Darcy to Elizabeth, and flat out lying to her about what happened.

  22. Neither is a true Denham. They are only niece/nephew of the second husband, so not blood relations. Clara was a distant cousin, so related, if not closely, by blood. In Austen's version, they are brother and sister, not step. In this PBS version, they are step-siblings.
  23. Arthur seems to be matchmaking between Georgiana and the artist. Didn't he switch place settings at that dinner to get them closer together? Isn't the artist's name Charles Lockhart?
  24. I don't think I was ever clear on what everyone's relationship to Lady D is - Clara, Esther, Edward? Anyone else? The Parkers aren't related, right? She was just an investor in Sanditon? Thanks for any help here! Edited to add: I went back to the original fragment of Sanditon that Austen wrote. From what I could gather, Clara is Lady D's poor cousin who she took in to be her companion. Edward is the nephew of Lady D's second husband. Esther is Edward's sister, not stepsister. The Parkers are not related. So they changed Esther/Edwards relationship. Did they change anything else? (Besides the nature of the characters - everyone is charming, lovable, delightful, etc. But of course that does not lend itself to great drama, so they changed Lady D to the cantankerous person she is here, Edward is slimy, Clara is scheming, etc.)
  25. Also how the girls treat Charlotte like the von Trapp children played tricks on Maria. And the boss closing off music because of his wife's death. Next I suppose we will see them all singing together after Maria - I mean Charlotte - gets them all together as one big happy family. Too bad there isn't a mountain for them to climb at the end...
