I hear you! And I think it does depend on your family too. I grew up in the islands where black was the majority. So when I moved to the states as a kid, it was a startling difference to often times be the only black kid. And while my family talked about everything, I don't remember them ever talking about race much, probably because we came from a place where it wasn't unusual to see black folks in positions of power or have black bodies valued, so it may have been that they didn't think those things needed to said. Except that one time when I showed up on the first day of school expecting to be in 5th grade and I was instead in a 4th grade class and they told us I couldn't possible be ready for 5th grade given that I was from the islands. My parents put a cussing on the principal's backside the next morning and within minutes I was moved (only to realize that all the stuff they were doing in 5th grade I had already done in my "shitty" island school education).

I thought it was pretty authentic, particularly for a black kid raised in predominantly white neighborhood and school (I know Degrassi is supposed to be "diverse"....) where everything is done through a white gaze. Her asking her parents about it rang true for me, as I myself have had to explain many a time to black and brown students in my programs why something said by one of their white friends that they found funny was actually pretty damn offensive and/or racist. If you haven't been taught oppression, sometimes you just don't know, even as a black kid. You certainly recognize when you get treated differently from the other folks in your group, but you can't always put your finger on it. Especially as a kid or teen living in a household where those things aren't always discussed. For many of us, we don't even get a "race" talk until some issue pops up. This is certainly changing now with the zeitgiest of a "woke" culture where these conversations are happening everyday, everywhere and very publicly. But you couldn't say the same for even 5 years ago.

Exactly; awareness is key. Knowing that they have a higher referral bonus would also make me pay particular attention to their organization culture and policies. It took some time, but at least Theo came around to sharing the truth about the arrangement. I don't agree that they were trying to control Arabella, but they were definitely trying to capitalize on her fame and her "blackness" to reach a certain audience that didn't necessarily vibe with them and/or their content.

The early season are definitely better, so stay the course. You are also allowed to start general catch all threads for each season. Many of us will join in. I certainly will, as I did a rewatch a few weeks ago! There's also the Past Seasons' Rehash thread.

Man, do I miss this sho. Anyone up for a rewatch?

This makes me so sad for Tamar. I've always said that she comes across as the most sensitive, damaged, and hurt of all the sisters, despite her attitude. She uses it as a shield. Hope she pulls through and is able to get some help.

WTF? Totally unexpected from Ash. Maybe Nick, but not Ash! Guess now we know why he was working so hard on all the zen shit. Also, I really miss this stupid show.

Two Sentence Horror Stories - General Discussion

Yeah! I love this show! -
This new one, "The Current Occupant" just came out today. Are you talking about the CW show with the annoying lady who is blind?

Especially when they had that Conservative/Republican mixer for members last week that Kat attended to prove that she could debate them without getting heated. Such nonsense.

Oh god I hope not!

I am the only one still watching these?

Exactly. There were many options Jaqueline could have taken to still maintain journalistic integrity with this story other than killing it completely. Also, this seemed very out of character for her, given how professional, level-headed, and thoughtful they've presented as since the beginning show. I could see her taking time to think through how best to handle it, having another conversation with her husband about it, and even pulling Jane into a closed door meeting to strategize potential options before making a decision. What we saw, was way left field and not very Jaqueline at all. I'm mad at Kat for making me agree with Jane.....

Yes. Yes they are. Even the smart ones. I hope Munro Chambers is getting some great roles now that's he's an adult. He's an amazing actor. Also, let me know when you switch to the Netflix episodes. I've been holding off....

She actually said it took 2 seasons before they were able to get any BIPOC in the writers room and that "there have never been any queer Black or Muslim writers in the room", speaking to the intersectionality that comes with those multiple identities. And @marny is right, responding that there are POCs doesn't really address her issues with the lack of representation. For example, on Insecure, when they expanded the role of Andrew, Molly's boyfriend, in this most recent season, they brought on a writer who was Asian and also had been in a long-term relationship with a black woman who could speak with authenticity to some of the character beats and motivations. This is what Aisha is referring to.

What I wouldn't give to see a Mikayla vs Chise battle! They should do a mini episode..... Sad that this wasn't given 10 episodes and we lost the live audience. I liked the family, but I wished they could have at least brought back all the former houses and have them serve as the audience. Was not feeling Mother Eyrika trying to put down the "virgin houses". They beat you fair and square ma'am! They were fabulous and rich bitches.

He's better than Pauly, so if that's what he's competing against, I can see why he thinks he has a chance. AND asked for a loan while wearing a $5k necklace with "real" diamonds!!!! No fucking self-awareness these kids.
-
Oh it was definitely real. She was upset she lost him because she hadn't thought about getting knocked up first.....
-
I think it's because he aged out and is a second year senior?

Basketball Wives LA - General Discussion

Damn, I actually thought about doing this! Lol! #TMI -
I enjoyed that 20 minute distraction from work! Such memories. Belou and her kid! Oh man, could you imagine if Challengers now a days were allowed to bring their children on?? I was really hoping that Pluto would show some of the earlier seasons, or at least have them on demand. But it looks like they only play the same 3-4 season over and over again?

A Black Lady Sketch Show - General Discussion

Damn, that means we'll have to wait a bit for the next season. -
And let's not forget TJ's "Aneesa you’re one of the best and a great competitor. Josh you.....spent a lot of time in the bunker….." Me: Josh panicked and froze over knots. And he thought he would make it through a final?!?! He doesn't need to worry about Aneesa bringing him down when he's his own dead weight.

This is definitely something to be discussed before marriage, especially with the age difference. I honestly didn't expect Richard to get so pissed, but also he knew something was off given all their conversations this episode. Also, right before their pinky swear, Sutton's face said a whole bunch and I was surprised he didn't push her to share why she was hesitating. The only thing exciting about Jane's storyline was the stationary store.

It's rough although I have to say that the quality of acting in that episode is superb. From almost every single one of the cast. Liked we discussed above, I was a bit annoyed that many of the new kids of this 3rd generation were so traditionally good looking, but they really did the work to find kids who could also act and it showed in the "Bittersweet Symphony" episode.
