It's actually not a controversial take; it's Sociology 101. Although the term now has this extremely nefarious connotation, in the strictest sense of the definition, all churches essentially began as cults. They were small sects that broke off from the main, dominant group and had their own ideology and philosophy and used charismatic leaders to attract new followers and build their memberships. Eventually, many become mainstream enough to coexist, to some extent, or rather to be tolerated to exist. Christianity is one of the most successful cults of all time and it started with 1 guy, his 13 disciples (I'm counting Mary Magdalene), and a radical new take on scriptures/beliefs that had already existed for thousands of years! Now I don't think Jesus was holding midnight volleyball sessions, but if Luke came to tell me that I should come listen to this dude talk because he could walk on water and turn it into wine and he's gonna change the world. I'd be giving the hardest side-eye!

Yikes! Thanks for sharing! And also the dancing outside of the correctional facility - holy shit that is bonkers.

There's a good chance that William may have been a real and separate person at one point, and when he died, Christina used that as her opportunity to gain some status in their order. I think that it was less that Tamera didn't care about her education, and more that even with no education, Tamera was still chosen over Ruby who was more qualified than even the male manager. And as we learn, it also had a lot to do with the manager's gross ass intentions.

S05.E07: Fireball and Firepits
luckyroll3 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of Potomac
I think most parrots eat fruit, but don't quote me on that. I haven't heard about this. What is this about? Monique seems really fragile. It's like she was doing fine holding everything together, and then she had this last kid and created cracks at all the tension points where she was working hard to keep everything in one piece. Now she's just fucking unravelling. She seems angry all the time. While she's definitely gotten angry before (umbrella incident, Gizelle is a heffa and she can leave my BBQ, and I'll drag you pregnant and all), but those moments were few and far between. She was much "lighter" before. And how could I forget Ashley the super sleuth! Girl, that's too much damn work! -
I'm wondering if the weight/counting calories thing has anything to do psychologically with Keith's life partner who died of cancer, especially as it seems like Allison took her place literally and figuratively? Speaking of Allison, the part where they meet for the first time is so damn cringey. I had to rewind it a few times because I was having difficulty understanding what Keith was getting at. "Art is for people who can't do"? What a load of bullshit! And the way he was looking at Allison....how did her creep-dar not immediately go off. She clearly liked it though, and added her own cringiness with her popped cherry comment. Ugh!

I'm side-eying this so hard. I haven't finished the episode yet, but it's not lost on me that they have photos and video of almost EVERY single member, yet we haven't seen a single black person in any of them. There are tons of people with their faces blurred out, but this one critical part of the story is nothing but reenactments? (I mean, thanks for giving a job to a black actress.) I have trouble believing that they just never happened to capture the image of this mythical being. I know we're magical and all, but c'mon! Also, Jane's story doesn't jibe well with everyone else's. They all had this journey of doing the steps, working their way up the ladder, or rather through the sashes, and becoming devotees of the method and culture before being approached. And she was literally just brought in off the street. Something doesn't seem right. Ok, back to the episode....

Damn, Uncle Frank didn't even make it to the end of the episode. Aunty MJB and her family didn't waste no time getting rid of a perceived threat. And she incorporated lessons in being a crime boss for each of the kids along the way. That's how a queenpin rolls Tasha. She doesn't wait around to let a motherfucker blackmail her or steamroll her for money. Blanca was not happy. She was shooting daggers at Saxe every time he cut her off so that she couldn't provide context for all his bullshit. Speaking of Saxe... Everyone: "Saxe, this needs to be by the book." Saxe: "I know what those words mean individually, but all together? I'm not quite sure....."

It's supposed to be similar to this: Give Travis ALL the hugs. Poor kid. I like that Melanie is firm and loving with him, but for someone who is a counselor, it sometimes takes her a bit too long to connect the dots with what's going on with him. I also was not a fan of how often Mary Beth kept harassing him about his family. Like how many damn times does he have to tell you that he doesn't want to talk about them or reach out to them before you stop pushing? Plus he's the child. He's been living out of the house for over a year and his mom hasn't been checking for him. so let the kid live his life. Jeez.

I kind of agree. Part of me thinks that Sarah was pissed that she was brought into DOS for her recruitment skills instead of to "serve" Keith. She was cool with everything (and I don't know if I believe she thought everything was only "metaphorical") up until she realized that everyone else was still getting more access to Keith and she was being asked to do more work. I'll just go over here and sit at this table for 1. Lol!

Ashley Darby: This Come-Up Looks Rundown
luckyroll3 replied to eXiled's topic in The Real Housewives Of Potomac
I doubt they're getting paid as much as the Atlanta ladies as RHoA was the number one show in the franchise for quite a few years. They're probably still getting paid pretty well though. -
They definitely showed her name a few times.

He was also building a house from scratch on the golf course (and he also paid for the property). And there was the classic car he immediately purchased. Plus, a $5 million budget is what? Just under $2 mil (I'm estimating) once you pay the lawyers and your taxes? I kinda burned through this season very quickly. I was not a fan of it at all. The way the kids speak to the adults is so enraging. All of them, with the exception of Toby, are so disrespectful. Even now, I could never speak to my parents the way they do. I might get away with an eyeroll (after I've moved several rooms away behind a closed door, lol!). I completely forgot about Angelo's storyline outside of the baby (what a cute chubby baby!). I have several close, personal friends who have had aneurysms or AVMs, and the quickness with how those damn things strike coupled by the damage they cause is rough. Thankfully they're fine now. Daphne continued to be a little shit, and then still gets away with everything in the end. Gah! I'll comment more when y'all post.

S05.E06: The Text Heard 'Round the Lake House

I think you have that backwards. Sex scandals aren't supposed to lead to babies.... well, unless you're trying to secure a payout. -

Wow! I never thought I would see Michael father one baby with Ashley, much less two. Ashley certainly is using all these "rumors" to her advantage. -
This is exactly where I was at too! I don't care how good your organization makes me feel about myself. You can't ask me to join a "club" focused on doing good and a chance to help change the world in one breath, and in the very next breath ask me for nude pictures and the deed to my house to solidify my membership. I would have been like And even if I thought it was an inside joke between a close group of friends, the mandate to keep it a secret from EVERYONE would have gotten an eyebrow raise and the "let's get branded" thing would have been a hard fucking pass. It was also so insidious how everything in all of the initial workshops were basically leading people to question their base instincts and gut feelings. Everything from the incorporation of the EMs and being at cause to "collateralizing your word"....all introduced in the early stages of training. Nippy was right. Fear is a warning sign that people shouldn't always ignore. But the entire program was designed to have people push their fears down and see them as character flaws. So when this wild ass thing gets presented to you that your brain is saying, "girl, no!", you push forward despite those feelings. And when you're in the middle of it and your brain is screaming at you to the get the fuck out, it was all your decision because you put yourself there, so no one else is to blame. Truly diabolical.

S05.E06: The Text Heard 'Round the Lake House
luckyroll3 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of Potomac
Exactly. I in no way intimated that. In fact, in the part of the sentence you chose not to highlight, I clearly stated that what Wendy did was wrong and rude. There was no justification on what she did; I only pointed out that she was using it as a way to gain status over Ashley. And that statement was nothing against assistants. It was to point out that I and many others have often had the experience that many people often assume that when you're the only black woman in the room it can't be possible that you are anything more than an assistant. That's the problem. I also felt that Robyn was good with Monique up until Gizelle wasn't. And I would totally bet that Gizelle gassed Robyn up about the posts on Monique's fan site and claimed that Monique must have been involved. That was one of the stupidest fights during that season's reunion. -
The only way Leroy will win is if he prioritizes himself over his so-called allies.

This whole time I was thinking the professor was Kat Graham! Holy shit they are doppelgängers.

I agree. It's totally a defense mechanism. Many Black women with PhDs are constantly challenged and required to prove/defend their credentials. Now, while I have never uttered the phrase, "people like you refer to me as Dr. Luckyroll", cause wow, rude, I have certainly demanded that people in certain professional spaces refer to me as such, particularly when they immediately make the assumption that I'm just the assistant and/or talk to me like I'm dumb. And it happens more frequently than I'd like to admit, particularly in my field where Black women represent barely 1% of people with graduate degrees. It's definitely something that Wendy falls back on when she's feeling threatened. As someone mentioned in last week's episode thread, Wendy was most likely feeling threatened that even with all her accolades and degrees, someone like Ashley currently has a higher status than her simply for being a housewife veteran. Glad to see some authentic apologies amongst the ladies. But did Giselle really need to tack on that stuff about Karen in her conversation with Wendy? Who am I kidding, of course she did. She can't help but be messy. I must have fallen asleep, because I don't remember a pagent....I'll have to go back and rewatch. -
Only five minutes into the season 3 premier and I'm already put off by the stereotypical storyline of all the "bad" black and brown kids that were sent to Carlton to ruin the idyllic experience. I had totally forgotten about this and I'm given it major side eye.
-
It was! And it was so satisfying, especially when everyone else was so calm when talking to her. I was like, this bitch manipulated you and your friendship to get you to join a sex cult and brand yourself with someone else's initials. Ugh, so frustrating!

Lauren very quickly dropped that best friend act and launched into the "You made a sacred vow to me that you broke...." I was like, no this bitch didn't. Nippy is also the only person I've seen so far who has been pissed. He was big mad and rightfully so. I'm still trying to figure out how Lauren or Sarah thought she was gonna hide that brand from him. It wasn't even in an inconspicuous location. HBO posted the episode on the app/website a couple days ago.
