All Episodes Talk: Lorelai and Rory and the People They Love
desertflower replied to solotrek's topic in Gilmore Girls
Amen to your whole post, FozzyBear. Luke never said he didn't want to marry her at all, he just wanted a little time to adjust to everything. They totally could've talked it through and made a plan. And I'm sorry, but Anna telling Lorelai she couldn't talk to April until they were married was just dumb. I understand not wanting your kid to get attached to someone who then leaves, but come on. But you know then again, maybe Anna was very intuitive and sensed Lorelai was a flight risk! You know what little tidbit got totally dropped? There's a scene where Lorelai finds out her mother put a wedding announcement in the paper, and her relatives start calling to congratulate her. I thought that would lead to a big showdown with Emily but nothing became of it. Surely after the wedding was postponed Emily would've bitched and moaned about being embarrassed. But there was nothing. I did like how Emily put her hand on Lorelai's shoulder after Lorelai said she didn't think the wedding was going to happen. (The day she had to drive Emily around.) That was the most warmth Emily ever showed her. -

That makes sense that those things are more noticeable over repeated viewings. As ever, mileage varies because I found Luke to be handsome and thought they had some great scenes together. I guess what it comes down to is I never took Luke's anger very seriously, mostly because the other characters didn't seem to. He's like a grouchy old guy who has some heart underneath but doesn't show it easily. Sitcommy grouchy, if that makes sense. Lorelai even says at one point how she loves Ranting Luke. But he shows his feelings for her by doing things and being there at the drop of a hat whenever she asks. Not trying to change anyone's opinion, just sharing my viewpoint. :) Did they ever say what happened to Alex? I liked him too and he kind of vanished. -

It's funny, no matter what our opinions are we all at some point feel like we are in the minority. I like Luke and Lorelai and often feel it is unpopular, at least here. But people who don't like them together also feel that way. :) Good to have varying opinions though. Even though I liked Luke as endgame I agree Jason was a pretty good match for her. It would've been interesting to see him and Christopher interact. -

Overall I liked Rory. Of course I agree she had her unlikable moments; sleeping with married Dean and stealing the yacht being the biggest ones. The Dean thing I can actually believe more than the yacht thing. It was bad, and it wasn't very Rory-like, but I can believe it happened because she was young and naive and I think she really did believe Dean and Lindsey were over. (Still doesn't make it right, mind you.) But the whole event and her reaction to it afterward (stubbornly fighting with her mom about it) rang true as someone who desperately wanted to believe that Dean was available and meant for her, yet was slowly beginning to realize she had made a huge mistake. It's not easy admitting that, and I saw her snottiness toward her mom as a defensive thing, and almost like she was trying to convince HERSELF as well as Lorelai that what she had done was ok. The yacht story was just dumb all around! The one recurring fault I thought Rory had was her insensitivity towards some of the guys in her life. She's totally clueless around Marty, forcing him to come to her stupid Marx Brothers marathon (because apparently Yale students have time to watch movies all day and procure props and wigs with go with it) and is practically sitting in his lap during it. Then to top it all off makes him go out with Logan and his crappy friends afterward. I'm not saying she was intentionally leading him on; I think she genuinely liked his friendship, but it seemed to be all about her comfort and entertainment, and not once did she have even an inkling that Marty might like her and it might be making him uncomfortable. And don't get me started when she goes to see Jess at his open house, just to get back at Logan. Jess and his cute haircut, standing there realizing she's still with Logan and didn't come to be with him. :( Again, I don't think she purposely hurt people but she tended to play fast and loose with their feelings, without really being aware. -
All Episodes Talk: Lorelai and Rory and the People They Love

I just started season 7, which I've seen bits and pieces of in the past but this will be my first complete watch. So far I don't think the tone is too far off, despite the change of showrunners/writers. The general spirit is there. I did get bothered though, at a remark Sookie makes when Lorelai is telling her she and Luke broke up. Sookie says, "Well I know he's been kind of a jerk lately, ..." After just finishing season 6 and having it fresh in my mind, I don't really see how Luke was being a jerk. He made the wrong call waiting to tell Lorelai about April, but then apologized profusely for it. He requested some time to develop a relationship with April, but I don't recall him ever demanding that Lorelai keep her distance. Well, he does before April's party but he admits it's because he's scared April will like Lorelai better. Yes, he wants to slow down the wedding plans, but that was after Lorelai suggested it. He asked several times if she's ok with it and she says yes. Maybe he's a little blind to the fact that Lorelai is actually bothered by it, but she is not offering up any info to suggest otherwise. He tries calling her repeatedly and visiting the house and she HIDES and doesn't return his calls. Instead she stuffs it in until she's so upset that she springs the ultimatum on him. He hesitates and she instantly sleeps with Christopher. Luke does not seem to be the jerk here! I know it was just a casual remark from Sookie but it bothered me that they seem to be setting up Lorelai as the victim. -
I guess it's so we can vicariously live through them and their fancy shmancy costumes. I do appreciate that this episode actually showed them renting the costumes. In later seasons they just magically throw together elaborate costumes, and then even change into another one later in the day! I do actually enjoy most of these Halloween eps, though, and the costumes. Just not Donna wriggling helplessly in hers.
-
Oh my gosh, I never really noticed how awful and dangerous those ghost costumes were on Emily's niece and nephew. So funny. I too, have noticed how late the trick or treaters are out. Most towns have a curfew for that. Brenda and Dylan looked awesome as Bonnie and Clyde; definitely a highlight of the episode. Low point is the repeated, cringe inducing shots of Donna writhing in her costume. I also noticed last time I watched this that there are a bunch of stock shots of costumed people talking during the party scene, and they keep showing the same shots over and over. Re: raisins. No for Halloween, but yes in cookies and oatmeal and other things. Golden raisins are yummy.

Yes! I totally agree. I understand it would not be entertaining to watch Rory just do homework all the time, but sheesh, she just steps back in without missing a beat AND effortlessly takes over the paper. AND finds time to jaunt off to Martha's Vineyard with Logan or to Philly to see Jess. (By the way, when did she learn to cook? In Martha's Vineyard she's in the kitchen making all sorts of stuff. She certainly didn't pick any of that up from Lorelai!) -
Please show, do not kill Dembe. Please please please. Just get to the part where Red finds out what's happening and delivers swift vengeance upon the new evil guy.

I really liked the guy who sang Whitesnake and am glad he did well. Adam took a risky chance turning for him so early though, before he showed he could hit those high notes. But of course he nailed them, so it worked out. One thing that bugs me on this show are the people who dramatically declare that this is their last chance ever and they need this because they have no back up plan. Well, maybe get a back up plan, then? I guess some people say if you really want to make it you have to devote yourself to it exclusively, but it seems a little unwise to bank your future on a reality show and not have any other plan on the back burner.
-
I'm still in the midst of the April episodes and haven't seen them all, and while I agree she is annoying, I'm more apt to blame the writing. I appreciate ASP giving us young female characters who are smart, but the problem is April is written like a little Lorelai in overdrive, assaulting us with her rapid-fire witty banter. And that's not very cute in a 12 year old. I'm not sure a different actress would've helped. But maybe it would, who knows. All I know is if you bring in a character like that who throws a big wedge between the main characters' happiness, the audience already is going to tend to not like her. When you make the character annoying on top of it there's just no chance for the poor girl to be likeable at all!

Unpopular Opinions: The Cheese Stands Alone

My UO is actually more about the podcasts than the show. As much as I love them, I don't like all the jokes about Luke/Dylan's weight. Maybe it's because my husband is naturally thin and has dealt with the frustration of not being able to gain weight easily. (Something that hardly anybody will sympathize about.) But I also feel like if we were constantly joking on the girls' weight it would not be acceptable, but since he's a guy all bets are off. -

I'm in season 6 right now. I watched the show during its original run but missed a big chunk of 6 so I'm seeing some of these eps for the first time. Can I just say, Lorelai and Rory's behavior during Sookie's kids' baptism? GAH!! Way beyond, even for them. Bad enough to talk during the ceremony. Worse to ask the reverend to hold on for a second while they go talk. But TAKING THE BABIES out the door with them?? I could barely concentrate on their dialogue because I was so dumbfounded by their behavior. I want to know what the folks inside were saying while the girls were outside arguing. There's a great scene in the show Community when Shirley goes into labor in class, and one of the background characters says, "Man, we ALMOST had a day that wasn't all about them!" I imagine Sookie and Jackson were having some similar thoughts!! -

Agreed that Dean had no business getting mad at Rory when she backed off from their affair. She was trying to do the right thing and let him figure out what he was going to do about his marriage. His reaction should've been a clear sign to her that it was time to cut and run and leave him once and for all. I agree they usually made the significant other look bad so we'd root for the main characters, but what was weird with Lindsey is how nice they made her right at the end, before she found out about the affair. She tries to make his favorite meal, she's real sweet. She's even dressed in white in all her scenes. Not sure what the angle was there; it's like we were suddenly supposed to feel bad for her, after previously painting her as a spoiled nag. Someone mentioned the spring break episode....I noticed the Shins are playing in the club scene, and in an earlier episode Lane loans Rory a Shins cd. Someone on the show was apparently a fan, but then they don't even mention them by name in the spring break scene. It's odd Rory didn't mention it and say "Lane loves them" or something. Oh well, guess I'm just nitpicking. -
Ooh, more trivia on the Rave Ups...apparently the singer started dating Shannen Doherty after appearing on the show and they were even briefly engaged. Here's a link. https://www.yahoo.com/music/bp/beverly-hills-90210-flashback-jimmer-rave-ups-012041971.html
-
The band was actually The Rave-Ups. They were a real band but never made it really big. I think their biggest claim to fame was they were one of Molly Ringwald's favorite bands in the '80s and she worked them into a couple of her movies. They play in one of the club scenes in Pretty In Pink. And yes, I know way too much about this and have no idea why.
-
I've noticed that Shannen's uneven eyes are always more noticeable in scenes where she's looking in a mirror. Weird.

S12.E12: Top 14 Perform + Elimination
desertflower replied to Tara Ariano's topic in So You Think You Can Dance
The music really has an impact on the routines (to me, anyway) and that fish song was so awful it was actually making me angry. I'm not saying the routine would've been that much better with different music, but that song just compounded my dislike for the whole routine. On the other end of the spectrum, a great piece of music can really compliment and elevate the routine. I'm thinking specifically of Alex and Allison dancing to the beautiful Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah a few years back. They were amazing dancers to begin with, and that version of the song just made it even more breathtaking. -
Characters You've Changed Your Mind About

I go back and forth about Logan as well. I totally understand those who find him smug, but I have to admit I can't help but find him charming most of the time. I think they did a fairly good job of showing that one on one, he was not as snotty as he might appear to be when he was with his friends. Case in point, when Rory is showing the girl from Chilton around Yale and introduces her to Logan in the library. He's very sweet to her, and it seems natural. He also was usually polite to Doyle and the newspaper people, even though he didn't quite pull his weight there and was only there because of his dad. But then at times you wonder, was his charm for real or does he just do it to get what he wants? Either way, the actor definitely had a knack for delivering that fast paced dialogue, so I can see why ASP wanted him. -
I can understand. I am rewatching the series right now, and am in the middle of season 5. While I've seen the first few seasons a lot, I haven't seen 5, 6, and 7 as much, so they are pretty fresh for me. For me season 5 takes a turn where it just gets a little less likeable than the previous seasons. It seems like a lot of unpleasantness happens around the same time: Richard and Emily's nastiness about Loralei dating Luke, tricking Rory into the party with all the potential suitors, Rory being so bratty to Christopher after he asks for Lorelai's help after Sherry leaves (though I understand her reasoning, it's still hard to watch her be so nasty to him), Sookie's freakout and unprofessionalism about cutting out lunch, TJ and Liz fighting and him ruining Luke and Lorelai's dinner....phew!! That's all within a few episodes of each other! There's still plenty of good dialogue and nice moments, and the Logan/Life and Death Brigade stuff is kind of fun, but there are definitely some things that start to bug me that season.
-
I'm currently rewatching and am in season 5....at the inn their financial advisor suggests eliminating lunch service for a little while to save money. A couple eps later Lorelai confirms to Sookie they are indeed getting rid of lunch and Sookie has her freak out and yells at Norman Mailer. But then just a couple episodes after that, Lorelai invites Christopher, Gigi, and Rory to.....lunch at the inn. Maybe the no lunch rule doesn't apply to the owner!

I think they did get it for some...I watch the show on Pop sometimes (used to be TV Guide Network) and while a lot of the music is replaced, some of it is still original. I figured they invited Andrea since they bonded with her a little since the fashion show. Maybe they originally had a scene explaining it but it got cut. I always interpreted Kelly's story as she wanted to because she liked the guy and wanted him to like her, but she very quickly regretted it (like probably as it was happening) because it wasn't how she pictured it. Then of course when he never talked to her again she felt stupid for letting it happen. Something similar happened to me when I was a teenager so I can relate. I consented, but regretted it soon after.

Brenda's "Why don't you just shut up" to Amanda is one of my favorite Brenda moments ever. Nobody can spit an insult and glare better than Brenda. Andrea's nightgown always cracks me up. It's like the writers were afraid we'd forget she was buttoned up nerdy girl so they needed to really drive the point home.

I was at a restaurant tonight and Entertainment Tonight was on a tv on the wall, and I couldn't hear it but they were talking to some cast members of the unauthorized movie! I was trying hard to be polite to our dinner companions while still peeking at the tv. The girl playing Shannen/Brenda looked the part. Also saw a few others but didn't get a great look at them. Here, found a pic of the cast online. Not too impressed with Luke/Dylan. http://www.popsugar.com/37950628

To me Donna got worse and worse for a while, but by season 10 I started liking her again. They tamed down her look and gave her some nice scenes highlighting her and Kelly's friendship. And of course her and David getting back together was a plus. Agreed the Noah pairing was bad, and went on WAY too long.
