  1. I don't think Moonlight will go down as a movie that didn't deserve BP win, I agree that it was more likely that would have happened if La La Land won, heck even Spotlight might down as a movie that didn't deserve it's win. My opinion about Moonlight was always that it's a movie that you either really really like, or are just meh about it, I liked it, but I like coming of age movies, and I think a lot of people relate to it, which makes it really great. So glad about the BP win, I was nervous, I knew if Moonlight didn't get it La La Land would. What a crazy ending....I thought it was a bad joke at first. And I was pretty sure it would win best supporting and best adapted screenplay, would have liked best director for Jenkins but I do think Chazelle earned his win. I think Moonlight is now available on DVD :)
  2. I will forever be traumatized ;)
  3. I heard some oscar voters felt hidden figures was "too light hearted". I think they did that so that younger children can see the movie, which i agree with, but yeah, i knew it wasn't getting no oscar wins Moonlight though- i was hoping would win awards and i had predicted a BP win. As for La La Land, yes they were gracious but as one of my friends said, "What choice did they have?" I don't feel too bad for them, they won a lot, and while i like Emma Stone a lot, her performance was not oscar worthy! I'm sorry but Natalie was robbed plain and simple. And I agree about Faye D-she should be getting WAY more heat than Warren, though i don't get why they both just didn't say..."I dont think this is right." Oh well, who am i to judge-many people have said to me, "old people should not do live TV" ha!
  4. yes, probably the smartest thing she ever did, because it saved their jobs/careers what's funny is that this type of thing is happening now more than ever I finally saw this today, caught the first showing of the day (i like discounts lol) and the theater was still pretty full, glad to see that I liked that they made it more a family movie, but it still tough to watch some of the scenes I'm not really a taraji fan, but i liked her a lot in this...and octavia spencer, i love her in everything THIS THIS THIS. adding to the THIS but i'm prepared for the la la land sweep
  5. probably a little bit of both, i think for sure there are more movies for black actors/actresses to get nominated for this year as compared to last year because the only performances/movies i remember people being really upset about was beasts of no nation not getting recognition, and will smith for concussion, i don't remember any upset over an actress not getting a nomination I may not be able to change your mind on this, but I don't really consider this a "Gay movie", sure the main character is gay, but it is more of a story about a young man finding himself and as M.Ali said in his speech yesterday, "folding into himself". It does not have any explicit gay sex scenes and it is not anything like Birdman! I agree birdman was kinda odd, but i did like it, minus the ending I would classify the movie as very very good, maybe not great, but a solid movie worthy of best picture-more so than jackie, manchester, arrival and especially la la land! Haven't seen hidden figures or fences aka hidden fences yet so i can't say if those two movies deserve the win over moonlight, but for the movie's i've seen so far, this one is the most deserving.
  6. And it didn't get as many nominations as la la land did! Don't get me wrong, I really liked la la land a lot. I thought Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were great together with excellent chemistry. But I'm not getting all the golden globes/oscar love. Can someone explain this to me? Natalie Portman in my opinion should win the oscar for best performance, and Moonlight should win best picture, but I have a feeling neither thing will happen and Emma will win best actress and la la land best picture. While I don't think la la land will win in every category it was nominated in, I bet it wins 10 oscars. My only hope at this point is that lady from Elle takes the best actress and upsets both Natalie and Emma's camps LOL.
  7. The movie was disjointed, but since she was telling the story...it made sense... I def think Natalie deserves the Oscar for this, even more so than she did for Black Swan, getting the mannerisms down, the voice for the most part....I thought she was excellent but I could be biased because I am a fan I felt the movie was pretty deep emotionally, I felt for her...for me the part that made me the saddest was john's bday party, I don't know why, but I almost started crying at that scene, as for not showing the salute-my mom was wondering the same thing, maybe they didn't get permission from the family, the only thing i could think of, or because the movie was about her, he didn't want that scene overshadowing the moment???? Like Casey Affleck with Manchester, I felt the acting of the main character is oscar worthy, but I don't think the rest of the movie will or should win other awards...maybe for best director, but that really should go to Barry Jenkins for Moonlight
  8. I've been waiting for Hollywood to make a movie about Ray Kroc...he was cutthroat alright, but brilliant..... I want to see this, but it is not at the top of my list....hopefully it sticks around in theaters.....

    Moana (2016)

yeah, "you're welcome" is okay...but "how far I'll go" and "we know the way" are really, really good songs I think
  10. yeah, that would have been a nice touch....but I get too get why it didn't happen finally got to see this today....i found out about this movie in December and by that time the only place it was playing was at an independent theater 1 hour from my house and was only playing at 10 pm...so i figured i'd have to wait until DVD but then i think because it won the golden globe it expanded back out again and i was able to see it a theater closer to my house (though i still had to travel about 30 min) so, just like the other movies i've seen (manchester, la la land) this too lived up to the hype...and then some.....while i thought all of the performances were really really good, i especially felt for teenage chiron...oh man i just wanted to give him a hug! i'm glad to see he still had a relationship with teresa after juan died and as an adult.....i really liked adult kevin, i wasn't crazy about teenage kevin but maybe it was that i just couldn't connect with the actor who played him...it wasn't because of the bullying scene, i just didn't really care for him as a teen M.Ali was so so so so so good! that last scene with him and Chiron......such good drama.....i hope he continues winning all the awards (minus the globes fiasco) this movie reminded me a lot of the book white oleander, the book, not the movie....two totally different stories but what reminded me of both main characters is that both of them became someone they weren't due to their traumatic experiences....and that even though there was light at the end for both characters, they were still and will always be damaged characters...and the two scenes with them confronting their mothers were similar as well, it's what i love about coming of age stories if this movie does not win oscar for best movie...there better be a boycott lol....and while i liked la la land, if that wins over moonlight i will not be happy, plus i think moonlight or manchester should be winning for screenplay, not la la land!
  11. He did, I should clarify...people like Zac Efron and Justin Timberlake could have been cast, but I think Gosling had the whole package in regards to acting, singing, and dancing. I couldn't see Miles Teller at all in this....but then again, I still have to see Whiplash Looks like the HFP is liking this movie though....

    Sing (2016)

I thought the movie was solid...not the best, but not bad either. I just think illumination does not make as good as movies as Disney, but I liked this way better than the Secret Life of Pets. I was impressed with the singing and Johnny's character was my favorite, followed by Rosita. This is how I would rank the animated movies I saw this year: 1. Zootopia 2. Moana 3. Sing 4. The Secret Life of Pets 5. Finding Dory
  13. I saw this tonight, I liked it a lot, I get the hype but, I don't know if I'd call Emma Stone's performance "oscar worthy" unless you count the dancing. I was impressed with the singing and dancing, I can't imagine some of these other hollywood celebs (i.e. Pratt, Hemsworth's, Efron, etc) being able to pull off what Gosling did. I think there's a little more talent in the pool of females that could have done what Emma Stone did but I think the two of them mesh well together. I get why it ended the way it did, in order for the two of them to be together one of them would have had to give up their dreams, in the sequence at the end it appeared it was he who gave up his dream. Would have been nice if they had found their way back to each other though, but, it was a realistic ending which I liked.
  14. I'm with those who say they are impressed that they had the guts to kill them all off and I too wonder what the original version was that the Disney execs didn't like. I thought it was that originally they had killed them all off and the Disney execs made them change it. The Vader fight scene was great! It really does show how bad Kylo Ren is, but then again, I was not a fan of his character at all. K2 was funny but BB8 still holds my heart LOL So far I've been really impressed with Disney taking over, with TFA and Rouge One, using real sets and real places instead of the CGI overload of the prequels, I'm really looking forward to the Han Solo spin off movie now.
  15. I saw the trailer, I was not impressed. I'm a fan of the Alien franchise, but-my all time favorite is Aliens followed by Prometheus, I know a lot of people didn't like Prometheus-but I loved it. I'll have to wait to see what the reviews are on this before deciding if I will see it or not. It looks like they are trying to return to the more horror version that made the franchise so popular.
  16. I do believe that's because Affleck settled.... But I am pretty disgusted with the hypocrisy...to say, "well, affleck's allegations were not as bad" I call BS on that, Parker was found not innocent yet no one was bringing that into the discussion and instead his movie tanked. Total hypocrisy. As for the movie, I loved it. I thought Affleck was great and totally deserving of all this hype. Was not that impressed by Michelle Williams (she wasn't in it enough) but Affleck was good, so, so good. The nephew was really good too, I see now why he is getting nominated as well. Spoiler's below*****
  17. Early reviews on this aren't looking good...not good at all. I mean, I know bad reviews didn't stop Suicide Squad from making money (and I still haven't seen it), but Suicide Squad was not up against Star Wars and Sing..... I was planning on seeing this in the theater, now I am not so sure....
  18. I am a Harry Potter fan, and I couldn't really connect with the characters at all. I liked the movie, but I didn't love it....the main characters just did not have the chemistry of Harry/Ron/Hermonie. I am looking forward to the sequel though, I tend to find the first installment on trio's are the slowest set up wise. My friends are who are huge HP fans absolutely LOVED it, to me it was decent, but not great. I did think Eddie Redmayne did very well though.

    Moana (2016)

Saw this tonight while everyone else was seeing Rouge One....I am in agreement with the other comments that saw Zootopia still tops as the best movie, but this is a close second....this was way better than Finding Dory. Visually it was just stunning. Hawaii is one of my favorite places so I really appreciated how beautiful they made it look. HeiHei was great but I also loved the little pig...so cute! I hope it wins some awards for music/animation, totally deserving.
  20. I enjoyed this, but I still favor the original. I really liked Leslie Jones. She made the movie for me. I thought Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth were too over the top. Speaking of Hemsworth, I read an article some gossip columnist said concerning him and that he should make his mark on comedies once Thor is done....not in agreement with that...I was NOT impressed with his comedy haha. Oh and I loved seeing Slimer and Stay Puff again!
  21. Not a fan of this at all. I do think John Goodman did a good job though. But, if there is a sequel, I would check it out....on DVD.
  22. I liked this better than Dory, but neither movie is nowhere near as good as Zootopia was. Someone told me they felt they focused too much on the displaced pets underground....I agree with that. It didn't really show a secret life of pets. But I will say, if one did not feel bad for Tattoo they have no heart :(
  23. Loved seeing Jason Bateman....that was great! I wasn't surprised by McCarthy..... I thought it was pretty decent-but the Rock's character was wayyy to over the top.
  24. This movie was great! We had to drive an hour away just to find it two weeks after it came out!!!!! It is too bad it bombed as badly as it did, they should have released it in the spring instead of trying to compete with the summer blockbusters...though few have turned out to be blockbusters.
  25. If this question is for real the answer is NO-it comes out July 15 I think. So-at first I had no interest in seeing it. Then i saw the first trailer and it peaked my interest....now though...I am not sure.....I think it could go either way. I guess I'll end up waiting to see what the reviews say, or if it is playing at the drive in near me I'll go regardless. If it flops, it will follow the trend.....
