Witches of East End In The Media
magicdog replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Witches Of East End [V]
We should at least get a TV movie or miniseries to finish the ciffhanger they left us. -
Definitely didn't see Big Blue actually being Bobby Fischer coming. Or the head of the company being a robot. I give the ep props for having Yung Lee lose the match. So many situations like this often have them winning.

Never mentioned - only that one like it is carved into the lunar surface. Or did you mean IRL? He claimed it was an African warrior tattoo.

There's plenty of comparisons/mockery to go around: A "team" that goes around solving mysteries of one sort or other (Mystery Inc., et al) A celebrity turned into a cartoon and voicing their own character ("The New Scooby Doo Movies") A team "logo" or "uniform" (the question mark on Tyson's and Yung Hee's clothes) The smart one (Yung Hee, although Marquess qualifies to an extent) For all intents and purposes she's Velma. The ghost/unique member of the team (Marquess is essentially "The Funky Phantom" ). "Pigeon" is the team pet (Scooby, Elmo, Elvis, Chu-Chu, Dozer, et al). No explanations (as of yet) how this group came together (all we know is that Tyson's daughter was left on his doorstep). That also is typical of most of HB's teams. A customized vehicle of some sort (Mystery Machine, Looney Duney, Speed Buggy, Wonder Wheels). Rocking theme song and opening credits showing the team in action (Jonny Quest). All we're missing is the gang being a band and a laugh track.

I've noticed something that has yet to be addressed in this series. Since we're back at the swamp, no mention was made of the Swampy Water Tribe (the water benders who we first met in ATLA). Are they still there? Did they die off/move on? Did they get pants?
-
I'm guessing she wants him as a hostage to show that the Earth Kingdom is officially gone and will likely kill him in front of his former subjects. I couldn't believe Kuvira was near the Swamp! Toph's going to put a hurtin' on her! "Wu down!" "I'm in laundry!" Verrick's rant to the checkpoint soldiers! Damn they were so close! Very impressed with the EMP on the fly. Verrick truly is a genius, if a major weakling! Zhu-Li is one tough chick if what he said about her carrying him on a sprained ankle is true!

That Grumpy Cat movie looks like it's going to be all sorts of pain! Even the voice is all wrong for her! "A Carol Christmas" wasn't bad. I'm not a Tori Spelling fan, but the movie is very watchable. "Eve's Christmas" also not bad - although I had a problem with the character NEVER having kept in contact with her family when she left to go to NY. It's not like they disowned her. I love the modern Christmas classic, "Mrs. Santa Claus" with Angela Lansbury as the titular character. The late, great Charles Durning made a great Santa Claus as well!

TV Service Providers: Dishes and Cables And Satellites, Oh My!
magicdog replied to Sandman87's topic in Everything Else TV
The only thing I'm missing due to the dispute is TCM. Otherwise, Turner is doing me a favor by not having me see CNN, or some towing reality show on TruTV. Good job guys! Just wait until we can dish a la carte! You'll be history when you find out how many channels of yours I can live without!! -
I blame it on lazy writing. When you write a character into a situation that is so life changing, you should stick with it. It's too easy to just have a character win the lottery only to lose the ticket somehow. That's why I was impressed with that storyline in "Roseanne". Sure they ended up making it a dream, but at the time, I was impressed that the storyline continued and they stayed rich until Roseanne Barr decided to give the proverbial finger in the final episode.

One trope I have always been weary of was the "a great opportunity comes up and the character chooses to abandon it for no discernible reason". This is a cousin to the "bettering yourself equates to snobbery" trope. A person inherits/wins millions of dollars, a grand palace, offered a scholarship to an exclusive school/college, or a dream job. They often end up abandoning all that because it would take them away from their friends . Dang it! Take it! I would have!
-
I'm another Dish subscriber whose only lament is the loss of her TCM! I couldn't care less about CNN, TruTV, et al. The fact that silent movies are getting the focus makes me all the madder! If I may, perhaps I could discuss one of the last movies I caught on TCM before it was lost: "The Very Idea" (1929). This early talkie deals with the subject of eugenics and it made for some rather uncomfortable viewing. Of course the subject would bite its fans in the ass when Hitler (among others) would take it to the next level years later. Uggh! Do I have to even say it? It's a safe bet the Code would have put the kibosh on this one at the start!

This was my first clue that she's not really with Kuvira. I can see her being frustrated with Varrick after all those years together but she wasn't as gung ho about Kuvira's victory as the rest of the spectators. It was a golf clap. I am certain she will help the good guys soon. What annoyed me about this episode was seeing Sue Yin and her sons kept in metal constraints. I kept thinking they should be trying to bend themselves out of them! Or are they made of platinum? Ditto. I'm hoping for them (and Asamai & Mako) to make another appearance soon. For some reason I kept picturing Toph appearing on the battlefield and bitch slapping Su Yin for letting her city get taken over! It made perfect sense. Not just Junior's attitude but you can sense how there wasn't anything else he could say to his son - a traitor. Junior's madder that his father couldn't be bothered to scream at him! Maybe he was hoping to get R-E-S-P-E-C-T from dear old dad ("look at me! I helped conquer the old Earth Kingdom and I'm engaged to its leader!"). Whether or not it's due to Junior's lack of bending abilities is unclear. It could be since the only other non bender in the family was Opal and felt he could identify with her - until 3 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Kuvira turned on him eventually. After all, he could be just another useful idiot, which would fit into the communist theme of Kuvira's empire building.

Caught an older ep in which one of the subplots involved a Polish immigrant girl who wants to marry a [Middle Eastern] man. The whole time they claim they're in love but her father (a traditional Polish Patriarch) not only doesn't believe in the man's true intentions (comparing his zoftig daughter to a pierogi and therefore unattractive to men) he thinks he's looking for a green card. Eventually the daughter rebels against her father by demanding her citizenship papers (which her father chose to hide to prevent the union) and orders Jaime to arrest him since it's considered theft. The father relents but then tells his daughter that she's dead to him and can find someplace else to go. We eventually learn she does marry the guy but she admits it was for him to stay in the country because he was gay (he was afraid to go back to his home country where he'd face certain death). They're still planning on living together and all works out, we're happy, let's have some champagne with the nice supportive cops, etc. I was pissed at this for many reasons! Bad enough marrying under false circumstances. It was also unnecessary. The guy could have asked for asylum due to being part of a protected class. Second, she lost her only known family for a guy who cannot love her like a real husband and whom she will not likely have children with. Not to mention that eventually, being married to a gay guy is going to get complicated since he'll want to go his way and she hers. Plus they'd have to deal with follow up interviews to make sure they are living as husband and wife. If their arrangement is found out, he'll get deported and she risks imprisonment. As jerky as the father was, it was not worth it, yet we're supposed to root for this ridiculous arrangement!

Under normal conditions you'd be right. But I've had family that lived in nearby Sullivan County and they tell me paying off inspectors is very common . They look the other way since they're getting extra income and everything else be damned! If someone else gets hurt from the badly maintained properties, the bureaucrats circle the wagons. Everyone knows (or is related to) everyone there.
-
Looks like a lawsuit is in the works. The Pombos are looking to sue the Travel Channel for making them look bad. My guess is the Pombos got away with the deteriorating conditions because they've paid off some bureaucrat. Otherwise they would have been shut down long ago!

Actually, it was possible. HS grads were far better educated then than now. Even 8th graders could give today's kids a run for their money! Many would be nurses took exams to determine competency and were trained on the job. I always thought he gifted her some things. To be fair, the woman was discussing home remedies from the previous century. Plus, back then milk was likely raw (not pasturized - straight from the cow) and loaded with vitamins and proteins that helped nourish the body. The lactic acid also helped to slough off dead skin cells. Plus - it helped soften the skin - Cleopatra bathed in milk regularly. Today's pasturized milk wouldn't do any good. What bugged me about the milk was that the bootlegger took milk bottles wthat weren't even refrigerated! Had it been evaporated milk, it would have been in a can.

I thought the same. If the king is dead, wouldn't that undo the curses put upon the rest of the family? Would they be able to return to Asgard? Should they? I hate the idea that Frederick is dead. I kind of liked the idea of a Beauchamp brother - not to mention being Freya's twin. One would think they'd be "key" & "bridge" rather than having Ingrid be the key. Bad enough Victor is apparently dead. I am REALLY hoping that Freya is able to deduce quickly that Killian's soul is in Dash's body. I'm not crazy about that development. If Ingrid is pregnant with his child, I like the idea of it being a way to bring Dash back to at least the center line. If not, he'd be one daddy you don't want to fight with for custody. Yes, I'm hoping it wasn't the mandragora! Now about this sister, Helena.......any info as to why she of all people is running Hell (aside from her name)? Is she the youngest sister?

I was looking forward to seeing, "Sunday in the Afternoon" on Thursday. The guide read it was the 1933 version with Gary Cooper. I later found out there were no fewer than three versions of this film, as the one made in 1948 was the one that aired. I was disappointed since a pre-code version seemed like it would be interesting.

I cut Su Yin a bit of slack here. The Metal City was her baby, her dream of a better community and culture. Her eldest child and one of her trusted guards likely conquered it and made it the beginning of their Earth Kingdom alliance. To her it's definitely a betrayal on many fronts. Plus, she despised royalty (she had no love for the Earth Queen or most royalty in general) and was all about finding one's own path. By having the old Earth Kingdom united in what appears to be a military junta/dictatorship in the making is definitely against her ideals. Much of Kuvira's actions remind me of both Fire Lord Sozin's plans to conquer the world, and Chin the Conqueror's earlier attempts to dominate the Earth Kingdom. She's trying to force a bunch of diverse, formerly independent [city states] into one cohesive nation and expects them to submit to her. As for Korra, not only does she suffer from PTSD, but she's also feeling like she doesn't have a purpose in this world anymore. She took away her former duty of balancing the physical and spiritual worlds, she was poisoned and nearly killed in her battle with Zaheer and is likely full of doubt about herself and her future.

This. They mentioned the name yet other than he was the spirit of a psychopath who keeps killing every woman that remind him of his sister, we don't know why there is a connection. Had the spirit been a nameless demon, perhaps it would have been more palatable. That's the infamous paradox. If Joanna came for the box once before, then what happened to it? Does this mean she has to beat her previous time traveling self to get it from her 1840s self? Wonder how they're going to save Killian since he's taken the soul cleansing potion. An odd thought came over me about this scenario; The family Grimoire was purported to be the most complete magical tomes - a spell for all sorts of things not otherwise found. Wouldn't a solution to Killian's star crossed love curse have been there rather than developed by Lil' Eva and her friend at the shop? One would think soul cleansing potions would be better known. I was taken by surprise that Joanna was a dope smoker, then again, the tragedy of separating from Victor and the girls' curse finally sent her looking for something to numb the pain.

All that seemed to matter in this episode is that Darius pulled off his plan to "kill the king", and Kyle got Elvis back. I was bummed when the May Two that was with him got killed; I wanted him to get the daughter he said he wanted to parent. I thought Kyle was her twu wuv. After all, they left together and she fertilized another egg with his sperm - and didn't bother to ask his permission either. That kid would be Elvis' half sibling after all. How is she going to get it in her uterus... a turkey baster? Who'd have thought Malthusians are taken so seriously in the future! Turns out I was half right in how the infertility got started. I figured it was elitists who wanted to pare down the population. Regarding the lottery winners: It seems stupid that NONE of them thought they'd be kept by the government or their kids property of thereof? That was the first place my mind went when the lottery idea came along. They're so trigger happy I wouldn't be surprised if the government decided to get rid of the gals permanently once the kids are out of diapers.

Didn't we already go through the civil war theme with the Water Tribes in season 2? Still, it's be interesting to see how things go with The Earth Queen gone, BSS ravaged, and a bunch of wannabe warlords looking to take over. ETA: After seeing the trailer, it makes me that much more impatient to see the premiere! I wasn't expecting a three year time jump! Tenzin's kids look almost grown and Jinora looks as I predicted in the speculation thread! I was surprised by the flying squirrel outfits on the Airbenders. They look too modern for the 20s look of the series - but they seem more practical than the staffs. The mechas are back and I do believe we got a glimpse of Zuko's daughter, who was seated next to him. She looks younger than I imagined. I figured she'd have been in her 50s to early 60s.

I hate the trope in which a person tries to better themselves in some fashion and are accused to "trying to be something they're not". I came across an episode of Fantasy Island in which a woman has a "fantasy" of being a "lady". Her daughter is marrying a rich guy from a richer family and the wedding was being held at the island. The woman was a nice earthy type who wanted to learn a little more of the social graces so she wouldn't appear to be an idiot at a party filled with more sophisticated folk. The rich boy's aunt exposes the woman's past in front of all the party guests (she was in roller derby and put her daughter through [finishing] school after losing her husband and having no other way to make a living). Future father in law is cool with the woman not being "a lady" and future son is law is cool too, so as all's well that ends well, I hear the, "I was wrong for trying to be something I'm not". Sorry, I saw it as a woman just trying to learn how to act with a crowd she doesn't spend much time with and not seem embarrassing to her daughter (although said daughter never acted embarrassed). No different than trying to learn which fork to use at a fancy dinner party. I've seen this trope in so many films and TV shows - except the character is going to college or looking to make new friends/contacts/relationships. The person's old group always accuses them of trying to be "better than they are". I call it self improvement!

Just got through watching pre-code film, "Heroes For Sale" (1933). Dang if this film isn't a bunch of BS posing as drama! First it begins with The second half of this film could have been ended in no time flat and it makes no sense for the character to act as he did. Had The Code been in force, this film would have ended on a much happier (and perhaps more sensible) note.

That target must be getting rather large because I'm in agreement. Then again, the Thomasons' political views don't jive with mine but I let it slide due to the original cast's chemistry (once Charlene was gone, so was I). I happened to catch this episode a few months ago in syndication. By the end of it I was saying, "What the hell????"!! What was the damn point? That none of it really happened or that his daughters WOULD end up as they did? My picks: An episode of Charmed called, "Once In a Blue Moon". From season 7, this episode featured the witchy sisters turning into CGI mad dogs and killing or maiming whitelighters (good magical guardians) due to their having their periods during a full moon. For anyone who watched this, it made no sense since there was a long magical history in the family and if something like this had happened before, someone would have made mention of it. If not, it was an insult to women in general. Another gem from that season was "The Bare Witch Project" in which witch sister Phoebe decides to do something for womens' rights by protesting a café which didn't allow public breastfeeding. How? She goes bareback riding (emphasis on the bare!) in front of the place as Lady Godiva! Yeah, that always works. Most of Season 8 deserves the thread title, but I do make an exception for the series finale. The episode of Happy Days (which coincidentally, was an "almost backdoor pilot" due to the appearance of a character that got a short lived series) in which Chachi dreams he sold his soul to the devil. It wasn't funny and was just plain unsavory. Whenever the ep would turn up in reruns, I grabbed the remote. Oddly enough, I feel the exact same way about a similar themed episode of Laverne & Shirley, in which the two find themselves in Heaven & Hell. The girls come into money due to a glitch and Shirley wants to return it, while Laverne wants to keep it. Shirley dreams they all go to Heaven because they gave the money back, while Laverne dreams everyone went to Hell for keeping it. Hilarity did NOT ensue.
