  1. I liked both rooms okay. I am not a crafter but did think the use of the closet was very good. In Gen’s I didn’t notice they kept the hearth tile. Yes that should go, maybe the homeowners can do that if they replace the flooring at some point as hearths are used for gas fireplaces much any more. Possibly for now they can just paint it (good oil based primer, I have successfully done it on a backsplash and believe it or not- shower tiles). The big ottoman idea is good but the colour didn’t work for me. Ideally you get the same couch fabric, which wasn’t possible, so then I think going bigger contrast both in colour and fabric is better than looking half-matched. Dark leather or maybe even white leather (fake leather) or an accent colour may have been better.
  2. I had dental surgery this year and received Tylenol with Codeine (t3s). I don’t like them as pain killers and prefer ITC Advil but my mom filled it anyway. I offered them up to a migraine and pain sufferer at work. Yeah I guess it was wrong. I thought maybe Roseanne knew the people, somehow I thought she must be their maid or something but I guess that doesn’t make sense. ETA I don’t really respect the take big risks with things like the diner. In life you have to support yourself and your family and pay the bills. The “personal growth” that comes with taking such risks is for people that can afford it. Lots of people have jobs they don’t like or just tolerate and get reward from being stable enough financially that their kids are stressed about money. At least in Dan’s comments to Darlene you can see he maybe realizes the mistakes they made.
  3. There has been a lot of talk of June’s responsibility in Omar’s death but I wonder if Omar left June would we blame him for her death? There was really no good option when the safe house was compromised. They both did the best they could with the situation.
  4. The unit was a bit large for my taste and these days you don’t really hide the tv anymore. If the home owner loved that cabinet (which was okay but nothing special), I would just leave it out if the room and make something else not a huge unit to hide it. The tv unit had storage on the sides but I think that was just the first set of boxes on each side, the boxes in the middle just seemed to be wood. It reminded me a bit of the brown hating homeowner where Laurie made that shelving that a couple of the spots were just solid boxes which was a waste of space. I think blocking off a common room with a barn door is weird. People don’t really live like that these days, I personally would take that down. I find on TS they want to hide the rest of the house that is why I liked Ty’s room a lot because it flowed well into the kitchen you could see. I really liked the dining room. White furniture isn’t my thing and I don’t like that style of chair but it was what the HOs had and what they like. The room came together well and seemed balanced. ETA When my daughter was young we sectioned off a side of the Livingroom and made it a playroom. These days you have things like a big plastic kitchen, etc. It really wasn’t convenient to keep all the toys in her room or have a 2 year old play alone in her room. We just lived with it and then got rid of it out of that stage. Now in the basement rec room is where the Barbie house, etc. is stored as my daughter is 9 and can play downstairs with friends.
  5. I only liked the brick wall, the bars and the things picked from the tent. The thing about Hildi’s paintings is that they will be thicker and will need to be sanded to paint over. I don’t need all the rooms to be grey and white because if you pick up any magazine or look at any design website you will see you can design any style of room and make it look good from sticks to gold walls. The problem with Hildi is that everything is just so sloppy and not cohesive. Finally you get a homeowner who would be open to a crazy theme and you do leaves on the walls? I think I have grown too old for this show. My DIY skills are way better now and so is my budget so I would rather see options on how instead of a $2k light fixture you can get a similar one for $100. To this day I remember Gen’s use of metallic paste to change the tone on light fixtures. Now with Amazon these things are easier to find. My friend wanted to change something to rose gold and I told her there might be metallic paste online and there was, great stuff, just a little touch and the whole colour changed! That is what I remember from the old TS.
  6. I preferred Jeremiah’s room only because it is to my taste and I hate that couch Nate had to keep (It had fabric folded on the arms?). Most interesting is having real designers highlights that many of the TS people have poor space planning (I even find Vern places a lot of furniture poorly) and that is why so many of the room don’t really come together. I mean look Nate used a lot of nails in his burlap ribbon stuff but it works (not my taste though, I would take it down as it is too casual for me). ETA in the Frank flashback I saw one room I liked and showed Frank may be able to modify his style to current trends. It was a red wall with birch trees.
  7. I was kind of surprised the dressers in the parents room was new because I really didn’t know you could still buy furniture with those awful pulls. The country farmhouse pulls were much better but I don’t really like those either, I would have gone with a standard fancy pull. However, maybe my idea would be too expensive as nicer pulls are over $5 each and they needed a lot of them. I watched some of Gen’s other shows and I think she has an aesthetic that is pretty in style right now. On the first TS some of her things like the copper wall were out there but these days that is the stuff of high end design.
  8. Yes people might not like them but big globe lights of various materials including string are pretty on trend right now. I didn’t mind the lights. A large room with a high ceiling needs a big light fixture as a piece of art.
  9. I was also thinking all their plans with the contractors were on those papers they showed N&J. The contractors probably insisted on real drawings and then noped out of there. It didn’t seem like they were scammed or anything. Another thought was that they probably tried to cheap out and hire handymen and not real contractors and then expanded the scope of the project to a point where it was too big for the handymen.
  10. The last week couple I actually liked what they did on their own in the living room better than the kitchen. I did like a lot of the elements of the kitchen but not everything. It was interesting they initially went towards the shaker door because based on their LR they didn’t seem like shaker door people. Maybe they were thinking resale as shaker isn’t as trendy as some of the flat panels will be. When you are spending a lot I am sure you worry if the cabinets will be out of style in a couple of years. This week with the older couple nothing really was my taste but it was okay. If I were spending $83k I wouldn’t choose any the stuff they did but the look works for a lot of people. I respect that Nate and Jeremiah show different styles and they seem to know the details needed to create a certain style. So many other design shows have pretty but generic styles (shaker cabinet, grey walls, gold handles, white and grey marble... done). While this room had the white shaker, it had more unique elements with the range hood and all the art pieces Jeremiah was talking about.
  11. I really liked the randomness of the floor tile placement. I find what I have the most design challenge with in my own home is making things more random and less patterned/matched. I tend to be a matching, linear person so I miss out on some of organicness that a good designer can create. I felt that how well the randomness looked was a sign Ty is pretty good at this.
  12. I think it is a bit unfair to ask if they would change anything now as styles have changed. I cringe now at some of the folk art crap I liked when I got married 20 years ago. I did like the Gen room, it was a nice room but I guess not the homeowner’s taste.
  13. Okay I would find it hard to believe that people lived without a kitchen for 16 years. That is just crazy. I didn’t mind the style and item choices but I thought it was too much kitchen to living space, proportionally. It really was too big a kitchen for the size of house, at least for my taste. The living room was more just a hallway and it was stuffed too full to really be able to move through it if some was on the couch. Hopefully that is only the door for guests and the couple comes in most days from a side or back door.
  14. Or if they preferred the green and blue colours they could repaint the orange and yellow and get some additional floor tiles. From my tv the painting quality looked pretty good, I did like the overall shade of grey and the small tile-like patterned fabric. It did feel nicer to see a larger room, it is easier to see the whole design and the finished room doesn’t look to so cluttered.
  15. Those rooms were great. I especially loved Ty’s room as Carter’s was a bit too Pinterest distressed for my taste but it was well done. Ty’s room went so well with the attached kitchen, not your typical odd room out done on TS. The only thing I didn’t 100% like in Ty’s room were the curtains, I actually liked the pattern, just not the tab tops. I would probably get orange curtains with grommets or an orange pocket sheer or something. I think the homeowners may have disliked the laminate because it was red toned and they said they love grey. The reddish floor is a bit dated but it looked in good shape.
  16. I would think they would just redo the kids room in the future. I have an almost 9 year old and she still wants stickers on her wall and doesn’t have homework yet. Of all of Doug’s rooms I thought it was pretty good and one I would keep. All of Kia’s rooms sucked. Even on my original viewing I was shocked with the borders as they were out of style back then. ETA It will be interesting to see what colours Laurie chooses now. Back in the old TS days the colours always matched her personal look but it worked as those colour palets were in style then. I had copper accent walls and an olive green bathroom back in my old Condo around 2004. I loved the little girls room with the flowers. It was so polished I loved it, usually TS rooms are a little sloppy looking. I am pretty uptight about my house so I was okay with that.
  17. I am watching a 2002 Gen and Hildi and they both did a pretty good job (especially considering the decor style then). Gen had the painted little wooden boxes of different heights on the wall. Hildi had a very pretty softly blue bedroom that would still be pretty stylish today and the catch is the walls were fabric but they looked pretty good.
  18. I saw one today with Laurie and Laura and one team did go to a store (Home Depot). I only turned on the tv halfway in but I didn’t remember the episode at all so I have no context for the shopping. I don’t think I paid that much attention in the later seasons. They shop on Property Brothers and their other show Buying and Selling.
  19. Jesse also said in the opening video that she liked and would want orange too. I probably didn’t notice that the first time I watched but on the recent repeat it stuck out to me. Then in the reveal she made a comment on the orange and not liking it either. Anyway she was interesting as I thought her fighting was all a joke. It is interesting to take a look back and see all the black. Black just isn’t that in style right now, if things are really dark they are black-brown not outright black.
  20. Yeah I guess that is true but some walls I think need to have a nothing colour or else your house is way too colourful. These days the colour would be more light grey or putty kind of base colours, back in TS data base colours were slightly warmer. I have my own hate colour and it is yellow. I could live with a goldish beige or a greyish yellow but things like canary yellow on walls is awful and while I wouldn’t freak out on TS, I would hate it. Gen once used a yellow in a kitchen and that was awful. Jesse has said in the beginning she liked orange but at the end said she disliked orange. Laurie’s room would be out of style today but it was in style then.
  21. I didn’t really like the tile floor. I generally am not a fan of floor tile as it is so hard to change. I prefer something easier to take out in 5 years as there is no way those tiles will stay trendy for more than a year or two. I liked the cabinets on their own but I don’t think they went with the other wood tones they had in the wood floors and furniture. Personally I think cabinets that looked like that unit in the living room would have been nice. White outer boxes and warmer wood flat panel doors.
  22. I watched brown room Jesse last night. I will say I don’t really consider the colour painted to be brown, it was taupe which is a grey beige and pretty neutral. If someone hates brown I would think they mean dark brown not just anything with a beige-brown tint. The room was nice and they could just repaint. Jesse was a person I personally think has bad taste (I mean look at her hair that was way out of style even then) so I doubt she would have liked anything as she didn’t really like the room she worked on she just faked it better than with her own room.
  23. I am a weirdo as I would totally be okay with Hildi or Doug. In Hildi’s rooms often there is a crazy element but something that is really good and better than most things on TS - like in the cardboard room the bed was really great. I would redo the weird thing and keep the really nice piece. In the recent Hildi room I would keep the fabric blind, pillows and furniture and repaint. I really liked the fabric. I would take down the tire track art and put something else up. In Doug’s room I would repaint the ceiling and see if I could paint over the fabric to a slightly lighter colour. I would keep the rest. This episode gave me a new interest in green. Right now my “theme” colour is teal but maybe I should make a change in my master bedroom.
  24. Probably a vacuum with a drapery attachment. Personally, I clean my walls and touch up the paint a lot, but tons of people I know don’t wash their walls and don’t even think about it. These people wouldn’t even think of cleaning the burlap. I have seen burlap glued on as wallpaper and painted over IRL. It was used sort of in place of textured wallpaper to cover damaged walls. It looked nice painted. I am not sure if Doug’s could be painted if it was only stapled at the edges. I don’t like non-white painted ceilings so that I would paint back white in both rooms.
  25. I think TS with a day or two more (possibly play it as a long weekend project) and even just $5k each would allow for some solid things to be purchased. It would also allow for the paint to dry so the paint job can be decent seeing as now the show will be in HD and I could see the streaks and lap lines in RD. That would be interesting to me as then you could see choices between things like better new flooring or new furniture, more expensive tiles vs a new microwave, etc, the choices we all make when we redorate a room on a budget. A couple thousand can buy you pretty nice couches and chairs these days and still leave money for the decorations part, it would be nice to see furniture not made from mattresses or that one couch style from Ikea.
