  1. To be fair, @saber5055, I'm pretty sure Alex ruled "correct" at first but then the judges were all like, no. So boo on the judges for that one. I enjoyed your appearance, @Gimmick Genius, and was rooting for you all the way. What a bummer about FJ. For your consolation prize, you got a "Good for you" from Alex on your great turnpike story.
  2. @opus, I'm an Alex fan (mostly). The main reason being, be careful what you wish for. Everyone says he should retire and we need a new host, but unless that person is Ken Jennings (my personal hero), it could be someone who completely ruins our enjoyment of the game. (Slows it down, tries to be a full-time comedian, talks about himself even more than Alex does.) You never know. Alex will retire eventually, sure. But in the meantime, I'm usually OK with his weirdness... it rolls off my back at lot of the time, by now.
  3. Welcome, @MrAtoz, and I hope you have/had a long run. I really enjoyed last night's game. I didn't catch the previous night's game, and saw some grumbling on here about Andrew, but I liked him yesterday and thought it was cool that he headed over and shook your hand right after your win. Very sporting. Whitney Houston is not rock. Now, if somebody wants to start up a Vocalists Hall of Fame, by all means, she may enter that one. Just my two cents on that matter.
  4. The wording of that clue was so convoluted. It took me a long time to parse it out. I haven't been able to watch Jeopardy regularly lately, so imagine my delight when I finally sat down to watch an episode (tonight), and one of the contestants was an author I love to read! Tyler Dilts. It's a very distinctive name, I didn't even need Johnny to tell me his occupation, and I went "Holy crap, I know that guy!" Well, I know his work, that is... read all of his books. What a kick, too bad he didn't win. Do you happen to know him, Mystery Author? He's in your genre. [go ahead and drink, I said it like Alex]
  5. Mid-game today, and I need reassurance that I don't need to shuffle off to the nursing home. TS's on a reference to the iconic Beverly Hillbillies theme song, plus one of the most famous TV actors of the 1970s, Carroll O'Connor. (The "Archie Bunker for President" buttons were popular in my school. Kind of funny to think about those now...) Just venting a little. Back to my rocking chair now.
  6. I also don't think I ever took a "long" hiatus from this show, because it always seemed to be around (Nick at Nite; TV Land), and now it's available on Netflix whenever I feel like watching an episode. Agree with Nordly Beaumont that it's comfort food. I do enjoy some contemporary sitcoms, but The Dick Van Dyke Show will always be the ultimate "sophisticated comedy" to me. I have to occasionally force myself to "remember the era" because there are some episodes that get under my skin (for one example, the attitude toward women; there's at least one episode where Rob is accused of being henpecked). But most of the episodes really do hold up now. That's a sign of great writing - and writing that did not comment on current events or pop culture of the time. And it goes without saying, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore are/were very gifted comedic actors.
  7. Thanks for that, MusubiMyHomie! From the oral history, regarding the casting of Suzanne Pleshette: Bob Newhart remains a national treasure.
  8. I had to turn it off. What was with the screaming? I did see who won, so I'll pass tomorrow, too.
  9. "If you don't mind, Al, I'd like to write that one down." I can't remember what come-on line Blanche says before that, but I love that Bobby appreciates it enough to want to note it. Plus Clooney's delivery is so dry.
  10. Yes, Jeopardy players... enunciate! I thought Tyler was pretty mush-mouthed as well today, like it's a condition that's catching. I'm kind of surprised that Alex isn't constantly asking, "Say again, please?" His 77-year-old ears must be pretty good.
  11. She does mumble, but I really liked her cat story. Especially "he knows what to do" (rather than even considering putting him in another room... sheesh, Alex!). I had a Sheltie who sat and stared at the TV during the Think Music every day. Yesterday's Beatles FJ makes the news.
  12. Yep, it was an Aaron Sorkin show. It preceded The West Wing (by about a year).
  13. Over in the Season 34 thread, mojoween said "I’ve never seen Sports Night but that episode title alone makes me think it would be something I would enjoy." The Cut Man Cometh is maybe my favorite episode of the series. And I just had to share this bit of dialogue. Maybe not hilarious on paper (screen), but just imagine Peter Krause as Casey looking mystified. Casey McCall: What did he throw, Cut Man? Chuck 'The Cut Man' Kimmel: It was a right hook... with a bit of a jab. Casey McCall: A jabbing right hook? Chuck 'The Cut Man' Kimmel: That's right, Casey. Casey McCall: And he did it with his left hand? Chuck 'The Cut Man' Kimmel: This fighter's got remarkable skills. He's not to be trifled with, Casey.
  14. Taking my response over to Small Talk since I don't want to get too off-topic (but can't refrain from sharing my favorite bit of dialogue from that episode). From today's show: Rebecca was the contestant from January who lost due to the (unclear) FJ: "It's the first Oscar nominee for Best Picture to be produced by an Internet streaming service."
  15. You are living in some kind of alternate universe, Browncoat. (Tell us what that's like!) I would have said you saw today's game early, except according to the New York Times, that is not today's FJ category either. Weird.
  16. From CNN: 'Willy Wonka' star on 'Jeopardy!' a treat for fans.
  17. Zach has a lot going for him. Any fan of Aaron Sorkin is a friend of mine. Plus he's got the best last name I've heard since I worked with a guy named Peace. And then of course there's the whole Radar thing. May he have a long run. Apologies in advance if I have just jinxed him.
  18. That's a really good point. Also the expectations for that show were very, very high, so of course people were going to be disappointed that it wasn't quite M*A*S*H. I watched it at the time, having been a rabid M*A*S*H fan, and I liked it a lot.
  19. It was jarring, so it would have been nice if Alex had explained. Especially since middle-guy (Scott?) was standing there but obviously could not ring in for the tiebreaker. Awkward, rushed, confusing. I know we've seen it before, but not recently, so a reminder seemed in order.
  20. Oral History of M*A*S*H from the Hollywood Reporter. I've read or heard most of those anecdotes before, but this story from Loretta Swit (about a scene in "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen") was news to me, and I love it. Swit: A few episodes before, Margaret had borrowed a book of poems from Winchester. He got angry with me at one point and made me return it. In real life, we had this running gag. I would tease David all the time that no one had his private phone number. He was very much his own person, very reclusive in a way. So, in the final episode Winchester gives Margaret the book back. I open it and read the inscription. David had written his phone number inside. That's my real emotion on camera.
  21. I'm with ya, defending the Phantom video clues. I knew there was gonna be complaining on this board about that, but I could listen to those songs all day every day, so I was in my glory. Still singing "Music of the Night," hours after J! showed me the clip. Rob is OK. We have seen worse... and just yesterday, in fact.
  22. Are you me, ClareWalks? I never post until the game is over, but came on here to vent my annoyance. You said it all for me. Frank also does not need to shrug elaborately when he doesn't want to answer. Just don't ring in, buddy. That's how this game works. Apparently it's all about Frank.
  23. Ryan is adorkable. Do the kids still say that? Well what the heck, I'm sayin' it anyway.
  24. I think it was because the reveal of the category came immediately after Alex said to Sarah, "Maybe there will be some categories here more to your liking," or something similar. And then that comment segued into him saying, "Serial killers." I mean, I laughed too. "Sure, Alex, I love serial killers, they're the best." (He does know the categories ahead of time, right? Well, typical Alex... awkward conversations are his thing.)
  25. Congrats to Betty! It's funny, I was just reading how Twitter freaked out because she was trending. I literally just saw this article minutes ago. It's heartwarming to know how loved she is.
