  1. That was a really good ep. Lots of action and suspense, and a fair bit of CGI too! I’d forgotten about the cliff-ghasts in the book - they were quite creepy. And well done Lyra for giving Mrs Coulter the spy-fly in the tin - I did remember that part from the book, and I thought it was well executed in the show. If this were a Netflix series, I would never choose “Skip Intro” - the opening credits are so well done.
  2. Isn’t there also a breed of sheep called the Texel?
  3. Repeat again on today’s Cdn of Neil’s funeral. Still makes me cry 😢
  4. I can’t remember - was there a funeral pyre in the book when Billy died? (I’ve read it at least three times; you’d think I would remember 😄) Regardless, it’s unfortunate that the dried fish apparently didn’t work onscreen...but I did find the pyre and the mourners very moving, especially Ma Costa’s grief.
  5. He died because his daemon was cut away from him - that’s how traumatic separation is in Lyra’s world.
  6. I agree, Cranberry - I was looking for his dried fish, too. I suppose there’s only so much the showrunners can do with the time they have, but Lyra’s feelings of disgust and even nausea are pretty key to the horror of seeing a person without a daemon.
  7. I recognized Nina Sosanya from one episode of Shetland, as well as the series W1A with Hugh Bonneville. Also, one of the nurses in the Bolvangar scene at the end has a recurring role as a police detective on Coronation Street.
  8. (Umbelina, I don’t think it was your computer - I‘m on my phone and I noticed the same thing, and I wondered what I’d done 😄 I think it was a forum glitch; it seems to be fixed now.)
  9. Thinking of you and yours, Cupid ❤️
  10. That poor police officer reminds me a bit of Loki in the Avengers, after he was Hulk-smashed into the floor of Tony Stark’s apartment 😄
  11. I quite liked Nikki’s dark blue dress. Those Abbott previews looked so much like PB’s 30th-anniversary episode that I thought they were the same!
  12. I’d imagine that the rules of succession are legislated by the government. Example: the government had to change the legislation to allow Princess Charlotte to be next in line to the throne after Prince George, so I would think that other parts of the succession are similarly legislated.
  13. When I read the books, I pronounced Iorek “ee-yor-ek” in my head, but now I see that it’s much closer to poor Yorick (alas) from Hamlet.
  14. Well, in the first book anyway, she wasn’t presented as all that special at the outset. She was always getting herself into trouble IIRC, and she was at best an indifferent student.
  15. So Chance was born in what...1988? This guy looks far too old to be Chance 🙄
  16. Psycho stripper, qu’est-ce que c’est... oh come on, SOMEBODY had to do it!
  17. Yeah, I was thinking, “Stop waving that thing around out in the open!” Apart from that, I thought it was a great episode. Iorek was terrific - his voice makes me think of Optimus Prime 😄 I continue to be impressed by the dastardliness of the Magisterium’s upper ranks. I’m rewatching the first season of the Crown, and Will Keen (who plays Father MacPhail, and is also Dafne’s father) plays one of the Queen’s private secretaries - and he has hair! I’m also liking LMM as Lee Scoresby, and Hester too. The bar fight was a good scene.
  18. Yeah, they never explained how Jimmy and Alice knew each other, yet when he went to her apartment for the party in the first ep of season/series 5, they seemed to be old friends... Casting note: James Cosmo, who played the crime boss Arthur McCall in s3, is playing Farder Coram in the BBC/HBO adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.
  19. A few years ago, the BBC did an absolutely outstanding version of Shakespeare’s history plays (Henrys IV and V, Richards II and III) with Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Sturridge, Sophie Okonedo, Adrian Dunbar, and a bunch of others I’ve no doubt forgotten. It’s available for purchase on iTunes, but it’s not on Netflix or Amazon or Hulu AFAIK. Oh! And by way of connecting this post with The Crown, Ben Daniels (Tony Armstrong-Jones) and Ben Miles (Peter Townsend) also appeared in the series.
  20. I found this on Youtube and wanted to share it here. Apologies if it’s already been posted!
  21. I have to agree with you. I love Olivia Colman, but I found her Queen to be almost too emotionless. Maybe that’s how the directors intended her to play the character; however, I felt that Claire Foy infused a bit more emotion into her performance. The scene that I found most touching was the one of Margaret and the Queen at the end of this episode, when she did actually show some emotion. I don’t know; maybe this season will grow on me a little when I watch it again. I honestly found myself dozing off a few times while watching.
  22. Those repeat episodes are airing today and tomorrow in Canada...the ep with Neil’s funeral is still as sad as the first time it aired.
