  2. according to the 2015 book, the missing kennedy, the birth story is correct, and, she had a botched lobotomy (still an experimental procedure) ordered by her father.
  3. think i'm out. hate the idea of a triangle. and clinical trials depend on more than funding: hospitals have committees; protocols must be approved. i get that shows often sacrifice reality for drama, but this is so far out there... ETA note to self: finish watching show before posting.
  4. i'm mostly hating lou. but, i just came across this vulture review, which suggests that the second half of the season address lou's shortcomings. problem is that i'm finding his character so insufferable, i may not last that long. http://www.vulture.com/2018/03/rise-review.html#comments
  5. YES! finally a show that realizes how difficult (make that impossible) it is to read texts being typed on a phone screen! can't tell you how much information i miss, so i'm thrilled that this show enlarges the text. yes, i know, cbs's viewership skews old. finally, here's an advantage!
  6. alan sepinwall @ uprox break down the show's flaws: https://uproxx.com/sepinwall/rise-review-jason-katims-nbc-high-school-musical-spring-awakening/
  7. "I don't like that they went from an entire episode about Deja and her mom to a quick bit of dialogue between Beth and Randall about how Deja's mother gave up her parental rights in court. What was the point of taking us through Deja's mother's experiences and having us sympathize with her if she was just going to take off." don't know why the quote function is so tempermental... but, i agree. deja's mother giving up her parental rights is too big a fucking deal to be revealed in a single piece of exposition. to me it felt as though the revelation was to set up her attack on the car. but it was so compressed, jammed into an already overflowing episode. however, had they ended the deja episode with everyone in court the groundwork would have been laid for her violent reaction.
  8. slate's willa paskin concurs: https://slate.com/culture/2018/03/nbcs-rise-reviewed.html
  9. the show wasn't on my radar until i read that anna devere smith was in the cast, so i tuned in. not nearly enough of her, but i like both hope davis and ben shenkman. and, unlike many here, i loved brit robertson in "life unexpected," so i'll probably stick around for a few more episodes.
  10. ali barthwell at the av club pretty much summed up my reaction to the pilot: https://www.avclub.com/lazy-choices-and-too-many-tragedies-lead-to-a-disappoin-1823750817

  13. accused is the operative word here. and you're right. however, this interview took place more than a decade after he had been ACQUITTED of the murders. and since double jeopardy meant he couldn't be tried again, this interview was just a big "fuck you!"
  14. emily nussbaum at the new yorker considers the layers of the show: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/03/12/jane-the-virgin-is-not-a-guilty-pleasure
  15. this piece from the ny times amplifies things a bit. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/09/arts/television/rise-nbc-rosie-perez-josh-radnor.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Ftelevision&action=click&contentCollection=television&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=3&pgtype=sectionfront
  16. I agree it's dumb, but I actually like it when they do light-hearted stuff like that. People accuse these stars of being stiffs when it comes to the Oscars, like they take it the ceremony seriously like it's a life or death matter. People don't understand why these stars have a blast during the GGs, but the same stars are all scowls during the Oscars. So yeah, it's dumb, but it helps a little to make the Oscars not too formal. agreed that the some people can take the oscars (and themselves:) way too seriously. but when the show runs almost an HOUR over schedule... i got rid of cable a while back, and one of the few things i miss is being able to watch the baftas on ifc. dignified, but not stuffy; real conversations on the red carpet, not just "who are you wearing." and witty hosts in stephen frye, and now joanna lumley.
  17. shapeshifter: keeping up with the various mergers among publishers is enough to make one's head spin:) i just took a look, and as of 2013, penguin is part of random house. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_Books
  18. found the interview with chelsea clinton so cringeworthy i thought the new book she was plugging must have been published by simon & schuster, a subsidiary of cbs. surprised to find out that penguin is the publisher.
  19. tom and lorenzo didn't like it: https://tomandlorenzo.com/2018/03/oscars-2018-rita-moreno-and-eva-marie-saint-red-carpet-fashion/
  20. Ugh, almost 11:00, and they haven’t even done the In Memorium yet. I don’t think I’m going to make it all the way to the end. They need to start at 7:30. ...or up the prizes don't know why the quote function's not working, but... my suggestion: cut the bullshit, like the visit to the theater. and, frankly, the extended banter between maya and tiffany could have been trimmed.
  21. the show ALWAYS runs late. so can someone explain why -- why, why -- they insist on running this bullshit?
  22. love how many cole porter songs they've played as they go to commercial. any one know if there's any significance?
  23. i was surprised not to see abby's mother when buck came over at the end. was that situation resolved in the last episode?
  24. thanks. and yes, he was. in an earlier life, i was a political fundraiser and caught him on a call -- he's actually a lovely man.
