TDS 3.0: Season Two Talk
needschocolate replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
I will let you have him, but only because my husband would object to me having a boyfriend. I deleted the recording when she came on. After reading all these posts I can't decide if I should watch it on demand because Trevor apparently kicked butt, or if I should be thankful I deleted it because the hypocrisy that has been so rampant the last few months is slowly killing me. -
Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
needschocolate replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
Well, I didn't think it would last...I needed a laugh so I checked out my newest favorite laugh source - the Amazon paige for the "Trump Make America Great Again Red Cap Collectible Ornament" and someone at Amazon must have been pushing the delete key recently. Last time I checked, there were over 3.700 reviews, now there are less than 400. However, the "top critical review" and the "top positive review" are both anti-Trump so I am not sure what parameters they used to figure out which ones to delete. On the plus side, the number of questions and answers has increased and they are a good source of laughs.- 8.1k replies

Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
needschocolate replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
Over 3,200 now (and even the 5 star reviews I read are anti-Trump). And if you really want to "waste" some time, check out the comments to the reviews and check out the questions and answers section. I remember 4 (8?) years ago when Romney (I think? - geez, I must have blocked this from my mind) made a comment about having a "Binder full of women" and someone put "Binder of Women" on Amazon and it got a ton of funny reviews. ETA: I checked and I don't think the Binder of Women is listed anymore. -
I have heard that tribals can last for hours. It is very possible that all the talk going on during the times that edited out was enough for Jay to know he was probably safe. Maybe that is what happens to them when they drink too much beer. Or maybe drinking beer after starving for so long will make you bloated, gassy, and constipated. No excuse for them saying what they did. I spend some time in Boston - well, okay, it was only two days, but we went all over the city - and I don't recall meeting anyone that was annoying. If my only exposure to Bostonians was what I have seen on Survivor, I would never what to visit there. That is one of the things I love about Survivor. There is no one right way to win. What constitutes winning gameplay one season might get you sent home before the merge in another season. There are different people each season and different idols/rewards and that all affects what makes a winning strategy. I think Sandra's anyone-but-me strategy was perfect for the first season she won - heck, she won, so it must have been the right strategy for that season - but it would've gotten her voted out early or taken to the end as a goat in most other seasons.

I think they allowed the term "imposters" to be applied loosely because they also insisted that they be cupcakes. I would have prefered if it had been more like the imposters challenges they have had on other baking competition shows - bake a dessert that looks like a traditional Thanksgiving dish and assign them each a dish - or - make a dessert that looks like someone's Thanksgiving dinner plate (slices of turkey, with mashed potatoes and stuffing on the side, with a little cranberry jelly, etc...) nd tell them that it can't be more than 40% rice cereal treats -

I didn't think the remote controlled Stephen Hawking was in poor taste, but I can see how everyone would tell Howard they thought it. The only one who volunteered the opinion was Bernie and she would typically not like the nerd stuff (neither would Penny or Amy). Everyone else was asked for their opinion and they, especially the guys, would not want to compliment Howard, it is more their style to tease, or put him down, or "kill his joy" (quoted because I am being overly dramatic). But was Sheldon mad because Bert didn't think that Amy was good enough, or because he thought he had "won" over Bert, but now that Bert isn't crushing on Amy, having Amy as a girlfriend isn't a winning point. I would like this idea if it wasn't award that included over a half a million dollars. A character getting that kind of money would change the show. Speaking of the money - They were told once that the University gets a majority of any outside money the scientists get for a project. Would Bert get to keep all the award money? -

I think Silver made a good point that if the Dems had treated the election as though Trump had a 30% chance of winning (which 538 predicted) rather than a 10% chance, they would have campaigned differently those last few weeks. But perhaps, the site doesn't do a good job of helping people interpret it that way. Go to the thread for any show that Giada is on and you will quickly notice that you are not alone. -
Laurence Fishburne is only 55? Wow, I would have guessed at least mid 60's.

I am glad they ddin't go with Cam being so calm because he was holding a pig, and it convices Mitch to agree to Cam keeping a pig as a pet. They did the pet house pig on Designing Women years ago and all the good pet house pig jokes have been done already (there weren't that many). Sad story - my neighbor was playing fetch with her golden retriever and the dog ran into the side of the garage and instantly died. Then again... They head butt each other, so their head and necks are probably a lot stronger than a dog's. However, I suppose the goat could die if it hit just right and broke its neck. I understand why the goat had to die for the Jay storyline and I know they didn't actually kill a goat, but it made me a little sad. I am apparently turning mushier as I get older, because I thought the 'Turkeys can't fly" episode of WKRP in Cincinnati was hilarious back in the day

Man With A Plan - General Discussion
needschocolate replied to Primetimer's topic in Man With A Plan
I knew someone who wore her mother's wedding dress. I wished I could have worn my mother's, but she had loaned it to someone and never got t back. When I got married, I picked a wedding dress that was classic and timeless, one that I thought my future daughters could wear on their wedding day, if they wanted to (I would never force them). 26 years later, my daughter was getting married and we took my dress out of its hermetically sealed box. Her sisters and my mother were there too. She put on my dress and we all laughed so hard, and then we went wedding dress shopping. Apparently, I was such a woman of the 80's that, at the time, I thought poofy sleeves and lots of lace would in style forever. This show isn't horrible, it isn't great either, IMO, it is just "there." Lowell is a nice addition to the standard sitcom gang. School mom isn't necessary. -

I took Barbara to mean that she had never heard of covering a car seat at all - I think she said something about babies needing to look around or get fresh air. When my kids were babies (a long time ago) they didn't have car seats that could be separated from the base and we had so much trouble getting the car seat properly installed, that we didn't take it out. We just took out the baby when we parked the car (the the buckles/harness wasn't as comlicated back then). There were times that I covered the stroller because it was to sunny out and, like you said, a blanket worked fine. If it is too windy, you can attach a ribbon/showlace/twine to the blanket with safety pins so you can tie it onto the carseat handle or stroller. There are a lot of baby items that aren't a vital necessity, but parents will spend the money because they don't want to appear not to be doing the very best for their little one (like the baby would care if the carseat had an official cover or it was just a blanket). At least the car seat cover on the show can double as a nursing cover (another thing we used a blanket for). -
Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
needschocolate replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
We have been re-watching The West Wing and one of the storylines we are currently viewing is when the vice president has to resign because he had an affair and the president had to settle for a vice president he didn't want because he was the one that congress would approve. This got me wondering about 2 things -- 1) Does congress have to approve Trump's cabinet members? With the Reps having majority in all of congress, I don't have much hope that they will not approve whomever Trump wants, but it might be worth writing to your congress people anyway. 2) The West Wing vice president resigned because he was having an affair, which seemed perfectly believable 12-13 years ago when the episode first aired. What will qualify as a scandal now? Funneling government money into your business - not a scandal. Having cabinet members spouting white supremacist messages - not a scandal. The first lady having worked illegally and posed for nude photos - not a scandal. Why? The same reason that rich people like them (and not all rich are this way) do anything - because they think they can profit off of it somehow, or at least, profit by reducing their expenses. They don't want to raise the minimum wage because it would cost them money. They don't want to have those pesky environmental laws because it will cost them money. They don't want healthcare for everyone, because businesses would have to foot part of the bill and it would cost them money. Well, he did look straight into the camera during the 60 minute interview and say, "Stop it!" There were always a certain number of people who are going to always vote for the Republican, and those people may or may not be idiots, but I agree that Trump won largely because of the idiot vote. The ignoramuses voted for Trump because he believes the same, ridiculous, illogical, factless garbage they do. As my mother once said - "Water seeks its own level, and so does mud."- 8.1k replies

Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
needschocolate replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
There was a discussion a couple of pages ago about how it was the Democrat's fault that they lost the election because they didn't do enough to make the working class feel that they cared. I guess trying to get good healthcare for everyone and raising the minimum wage weren't enough. Perhaps they should have promised things they couldn't deliver, like Trump did. Sure, the Dems should have tried harder to show they were in touch with all the laid off factory workers, rural farmers, and all the rest who felt that the government left them behind. However, these Trump voters voted for a man who had a proven history of taking advantage of people like them, a man who was shown to be the biggest liar ever to run for president, a man who has shipped jobs overseas, a man who doesn't pay taxes because he is such a poor businessman that he could lose almost a billion dollars in a year, and the list goes on. It is like when you go through an intersection because your light is green and someone runs a red light and hits you.. Sure, if you had taken an extra moment and looked before crossing you might not have gotten hit. However, that doesn't make your dented car your fault. The Dems could have and should have reached out more to the working class, but it is not their fault that s many people were stupid and/or racist and/or gullible, etc... I, because I have disliked Trump long before he got interested in politics, I can't give him any credit for tapping into the concerns/fears of the working class. I think he was just spouting off things he had read in right wing emails, and people started cheering so he kept repeating them. He got lucky. The media being fair and balanced, if they actually were fair and balanced, is a good thing. However, they don't seem to understand that being fair and balanced means applying the same rules to everyone, not giving them equal amounts of air time. It means pointing out the lies spoken by each candidate, not making sure that they point out an equal number of lies (if one candidate lies 30 times during the debate, and the other lies 5 times, you point out all 35 lies, not limit it to 5 each so it will be "fair"). Same thing with the number of "crimes" and indiscretions. To be fair and balanced, they should have pointed out all of Trump's pending lawsuits and shady dealings, instead, they seemed to they to give the same amount of airtime, so they ended up mentioned the email thing over and over again so that they would spend as much time on the few things Hillary did wrong as on the many, many, incredibly many things Trump did. Apparently, she thinks a hate crime is when someone does something not nice because they hate that you are a racist. The level that hypocrisy has reached in the last few months is killing me.- 8.1k replies

I think the lemonade kid would be more successful if he tried to get an acting career. He did a good job giving his presentation. I was surprised none of the sharks said that Milk Snob was a horrible name. I guess if you have enough sales, they don't care what you call it, but Barbara usually gets hung up on packaging and names. Speaking of surprised and Barbara -- she has never heard of a car seat cover? Still speaking of Barbara and surprised - I can't believe the restaurant guy got a deal. I think he was there more for the publicity - at least that is what should have been his plan. The sharks don't usually invest in businesses that don't have a wide geographic base for customers. It would be different if he were trying to get his specialties into grocery stores, but even then, getting a chrak would have been unlikely.. Instead of a lockbox with a key that can be lost or taken to to the hardware store and get a copy made (I am watching the final season of Breaking Bad), why not invent a door knob that can be opened remotely (and also signal when the door isn't closed within a certain amount of time. I still wouldn't want anyone wandering through my house unescorted. -
Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
needschocolate replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
He has seen how much former presidents make giving speeches. Getting paid a lot of money to talk in front of a lot of people is exactly the kind of job Trump would want. And he is probably thinking that since Hillary makes a lot giving speeches, that Melania will be able to too, that's why he had her give a few speeches during the campaign - and Hillary and Michelle both have a bunch of speeches Melania could plagiarize. Is this why the enrollments in ACA skyrocketed after the election? -

I wonder if the "least racist person" that "no one respects women more than" will have a cabinet full of white men. Perhaps Obama said, "Hey Donnie boy, people would be happy with the ACA is if the Republicans would have let me make this list of changes. Now that you are in charge, you can get them to make the changes, fix what's wrong and get all the credit for giving everyone health insurance they are pleased with. Maybe they will even start calling it 'Trumpcare' (Obama would be smart enough to play into Trumps ego) and you won't have to go through all the trouble of coming up with something else." As far as looking uncomfortable, perhaps that was because he was trying not to show his excitement that he was sitting next to Obama and he realized his life-long dream of hanging out with one of the popular, cool guys. -
I am enjoying this show since they have lowered the obnoxious level the parents started out at. It was nice to see the dad be upset that the daughter yelled at people and broke the trophy. I feel that, in the earlier episodes, he would have encouraged such behavior. And he is right - a trophy for Most Improved Participation should be destroyed.

While I think the writers could have done a better job showing the upside of being blue collar, I did find Dre and Bo's reaction an attitude to be completely believable for Dre and Bo. They also didn't show that being white collar is all that superior - Dre works with idiots and racists, and Dre and Ruby have a lot of higher education, but neither can fix anything. The show was about the superior attitude of Dre and Bo (and Diane).

I am still in the "I will let it pass because it is a sitcom" territory, but this show is heading toward "oh come on, that is too OTT!" Seems to me that a lot of show start become parodies of their former selves in the third season. You build some characters around the quirks that make them fresh/funny, and then they keep amping up the quirks until suspending belief becomes too difficult. Or, since she is only nine, she could have some experiences that make her realize that being evil is not the right life goal. Have Bo and Dre realize they have excused her behavior for too long and that it needs to be dealt with and/or have Diane be a "victim" (in quote, because I don't want the show to get too heavy) of someone evil and/or have Diane have some negative consequences for her behavior and/or have the baby (Bo is still pregnant, right?) give Diane a start to a change of heart somehow. It is not to late for the character to be saved (and not in the way Ruby wanted to save her). I grew up in a family that fixed their own stuff. My husband didn't, but, fortunately he was willing to try and we have saved a lot of money over the years by doing things ourselves. We won't touch electrical work. And I don't think I would pluck a chicken after the apocalypse, just throw the whole thing in a pot of boiling water (if we still have potable water) and let the dog have the skin.

Post-Election Fears & Anxieties
needschocolate replied to Spartan Girl's topic in Current Events & Politics
I have "discovered" a good way to reduce election anxiety (well, I didn't discover it, it was always there, I jsut started using it). The wonderful thing is the ignore feature offered by PTV. Someone posting ridiculous nonsense that is making your blood boil? Just hold the curser over their name until the window pops up. Then choose "ignore user" (in the gray bar). Then you select exactly what parts you want to ignore (posts, messages, etc). Be sure to click on "Update Preferences" before you go back to where you were before. Then, you won't have to see any of that poster's posts again - instead, where their post would be, you will see one line - "You have chosen to ignore so-and-so's*** posts" *** if there is a poster named "So-an-so" am not ignoring you.- 2.9k replies

Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect

There was extremely little campaigning done in California, because everyone knew that California's 55 electoral votes would go to Clinton. The Electoral College system means that the smaller states dominate the campaign. However, either way, electoral college or not, the littlest states get no attention. And I suppose there were people who were leery about Clinton but voted for her anyway because they were defensive about all the names Trump and his surrogates were calling her. No one did more name calling than Trump did, starting with "Lying Ted" in the primaries, the Mexican "Rapists," and then "Nasty Woman" "Corrupt Hillary" etc.. and the name-calling worked out well for him. Perhaps The Dems should have resorted to more name calling to win the election. -
Post-Election Fears & Anxieties
needschocolate replied to Spartan Girl's topic in Current Events & Politics
I kept waiting for Karma to show up, and she never did. The Senate republicans refused to let the sitting president chose a Supreme Court justice and, if Karma showed up, they would have lost the Senate majority and gotten a Dem president and regret that they didn't take Obama's choice. If Karma had showed up the Trump group would have lost because of their lying and cheating and bullying. I don't expect Karma to show up and have the Reps in congress stand up to Trump and his idiotic ideas. So, now, my only hope is that Karma will show up when all those Trump supporters figure out that he never really meant to do any of the things he promised (it was only a figurative wall, he can't lock Hillay up, he ends up being guilty of fraud and shows who the real criminal is, etc) an they see him for who he really is. I hate hypocrisy and I hate when the bad guys (the bullies, the racists, the homophobes, etc) win.- 2.9k replies
