This Is Our Social & Cultural Issues Thread

OMG, yes! Despite having cart corrals in every row there are still jerks who can't bother to take a few extra steps and put away their carts. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to pull into a parking spot only to find my access blocked by a cart. On a windy day they roll all over and hit cars. I cannot believe how lazy people can be. -

I moved to the US from Canada 26 years ago. We have lived in 4 states- PA, TX, CO, and NV, and I have found that the price of groceries has seems to rise as you head west. Of course, prices are higher today than they were in 1991, but every time we moved to a new state I noticed that the prices were just that much higher than our previous location. My son is back in Canada going to graduate school and he is suffering from sticker shock at the prices for groceries, especially dairy and meat, up there. -
That was just beautiful. I thought everything was so well done- the acting, the script, the scenery... I must confess that I did not cry. Not that I wasn't touched, or that I am made of stone- (I teared up at a freaking Canadian Tire ad I saw on Facebook the other day), but it just did not affect me that way. Maybe because, living in the southwest, I checked in here and read some of the comments before I watched, so I knew what was coming. But I did think that tonight was going to be the night where we would say goodbye to William even before I read any comments. Just the vibe I got from last week's preview. I also wish that William's dad had been with his mom at the very end. I can't decide if he went off to fight in WWII or Korea. Not sure how old William was supposed to be, but I get the impression he was younger than Jack when Randall was born. I also wonder if we will learn more about Randall's mother. There is so much more to that story. And, I wonder if she really did die, or if she will turn up at some point? As I recall William was kind of vague about her death. I assume we have to wait 2 weeks for the next episode? The "It's Not Technically the State of the Union Because I Have Only Been in Office for a Month" Address is next week.

Sorry, are there not still concerns about Zika in Central America? Evidently it can affect fetuses at all stages of gestation. For the life of me I cannot understand how a couple who claim to be so passionate about protecting the unborn could be so careless about protecting the health and safety of their unborn child. That's despicable. Far worse than the grifting, IMO. Because you know if that poor child is born with any issues, they will just "pray it away".

Funny about the trees. I was born and raised in the Northeast, but have lived in Las Vegas for the last 15 years. Of course the trees in New Jersey are bare in winter, but I have gotten so used to the trees here dropping their leaves between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and some trees never dropping their leaves, that I honestly didn't notice until someone pointed it out. The coffee cups, however, just drove me nuts. I only started going to Starbucks in the late 90's when they introduced the Chai Tea Latte (not a coffee drinker), and I distinctly remember that they used to give you two cups to keep you from burning your fingers. Then they introduced the sleeves in order to be more environmentally conscious. I did a google search yesterday and found that the sleeves debuted in January of 1997. I tried to find a link to copy, but of course nothing comes up today. Surely I am not the only one who remembers the double cups? Kate's clothes also amaze me. She certainly has a lot of very stylish clothes, and those are not easy to find in larger sizes, and certainly would cost a ton of money. Did she bring her whole wardrobe with her? And living in California she would not need a lot of winter clothing either. That is so true! High school and college football seasons end before Christmas- and that's all across the country.

Great catch Good Queen Jane!

Funny that there is no emphasis on the Randall-Kate relationship at all. At least none I can think of offhand. Something for next year? And I'm sorry, but the way they handled Kevin continues to bug. You find out your 15-16 year old son is having regular sex with his girlfriend and all you can say is condoms and respect? Really? No discussion of the comparatively high failure rate of condoms, compared to other forms of birth control? And then to totally abandon the discussion to tend to Randall's panic attack? I understand having to intervene before Randall totally lost it, but at the very least tell Kevin that the discussion was not over.
-
My thoughts exactly. I get that Jack and Rebecca tried harder with Randall because he was adopted AND a different race, but seriously, Kevin really got the short end of the stick.

Thanks. Then the timeline seems reasonable. Maybe it wasn't a Starbucks cup, but the white cup and beige sleeve just looked like it to me. Of course they wouldn't show the actual logo... Although I do remember in the early days they gave you two cups- the sleeves came out later- in 1997 . (slow day for me too) One thing that really bugged me- you find out your 14-15 year old son is having sex with his girlfriend, tell him "condoms and respect", and blow him off to help his brother who is freaking out over a term paper? Really? I am a mother of three, (not triplets), and I understand that they all need something at the same time, but the priorities seem a little screwy to me. I have noticed in the flashbacks that Kevin and his issues seemed to come second to Randall quite often, and I'm sure that contributed to his adult personality.

So last night Miguel mentioned Jurassic Park, which came out in June 1993, which would, I guess, put the date as Valentine's Day 1994. I keep getting mixed up. Were the kids born in 1979 or 1980? 1979 would make them 14 1/2. If the Jack dying when they were 15 theory is right, it is coming soon. Also, it looked like Jack and Miguel were drinking Starbucks coffee. Was it that widespread in 1994? I honestly can't remember, but I was living in a small town in Pennsylvania at the time, and it certainly had no Starbucks.

What's up with Chris Sullivan's glasses in that photo? One round lens, one square? Bizarre... And probably distracting as hell to look through all day long.

He looks great clean shaven, but so much younger.

I know Toby is wearing padding. A couple of weeks ago I saw an article about his weight loss. http://www.lifeandstylemag.com/posts/this-is-us-chris-sullivan-weight-loss-123344/photos/milo-ventimiglia-202164 But Kate? I don't know. Maybe they have padded her around the middle a bit, but in photos from the Golden Globes Chrissy Metz did not look significantly thinner to me. She seems to be an apple shape- her legs are actually quite small in proportion to her midsection, but her face is still full.

Technically true, but the big fault of BMI is that it does not account for muscle mass. So my 5'8" son was technically obese at 200 lbs, but the fact was that he played hockey and had thighs like an olympic speed skater, yet still had a 34 inch waist. So sometimes BMI alone is not an accurate indicator of obesity.

I don't have an issue with the possibility that Jack's death contributed to Kate's weight gain. I think it is fairly common that someone who had a tendency to gain weight easily as a child would spiral out of control as an adult as the result of experiencing some form of trauma. Often it is the result of being the victim of some sort of abuse, but the sudden death of a beloved parent could certainly qualify. And the drumming scene a couple of weeks ago seemed to hint at this being a factor.

For those worrying about William dying next week, I found this description for episode 16 on IMDB: S1, Ep16 Memphis Randall and William take a road trip to Memphis, where Randall learns about William's past. I am guessing William won't die until the finale, or the very last scene of episode 17.

Honestly I just don't see Jack and Rebecca divorcing before he dies. The fact that she wore the necklace at the funeral, and still wears it now (and the show seems to focus on that), just doesn't add up to a divorce. And given the timeline, I can't see her divorcing and jumping right into Miguel's arms. Plus, Miguel is Jack's friend. I can't see him scooping up Rebecca while Jack is still alive. I don't think he is that awful. Kate and Duke- where is this going? Does she have a fling with him and feel compelled to confess to Toby? Because given how his wife's cheating affected him, that will not end well. Or is it just a tease and we will see her turn around and leave next week? Only 4 episodes to go, and I guess we will learn how Jack dies, but with two more seasons guaranteed, there is plenty of time to drag out the story. At this point I am dreading it so much I wish they would just tell us already so I can focus on the story and details without imagining various scenarios.

One small detail that has been bugging me from day one is the stainless steel fridge in the kitchen. It looks old and a bit beaten up but stainless appliances didn't come in till the early 2000's and they were very expensive for the first little while. Almond was the color for appliances in the 80's, and the 70's harvest gold, avocado, and copper were still very much in use.

So Lisa won again? I got a phone call during final Jeopardy and missed the outcome. She does not annoy me at all. I guess non-Canadians are not familiar with the Group of Seven. Too bad. Really amazing works of art. But "North of Superior" should have been a gimme.

Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp
3 is enough replied to frenchtoast's topic in Counting On
Jed is one of the twins- he turned 18 in December. As I recall, he and his brother always seemed a bit more intelligent and curious than your average Duggar. One of the twins was shown playing chess. My guess is they had to go as a pair to keep each other "accountable". Sigh. -

I must confess I have not watched the show for ages, but check in here occasionally for any news. Is Joy officially engaged, or still just courting? They usually make such a big deal about engagements- if a wedding is scheduled for April, shouldn't we be hearing an official engagement soon? Maybe they are changing it up a bit. I was surprised we were not told of the date of Jinger's wedding beforehand. -
I have noticed that since I hit 50 I have become more and more "invisible". I still get served, and more often than not people are pleasant, but as you get older it does seem that fewer people pay attention to you. I have always been a quiet person and never really liked a lot of attention, so I can't say it really annoys me, but there is definitely a noticeable difference. As far as the writers addressing Kate's and Toby's job situations goes, it is annoying, but at the end of the day it's a tv show. A tv show with five major characters whose storylines have to fit into 46 minutes a week. So they can't address every detail of their lives, although I do concede that a job is a pretty important detail. As with most tv shows you have to suspend your disbelief. I remember reading an article that debunked the apartments of most sitcom characters versus their tv jobs and the cities where they lived. Interesting stuff. There are a lot of continuity errors, but I remember the days of stand alone episodes where characters fell in love one week and the object of their desire was never seen again. A small error here and there doesn't bug me all that much.

Thanks everyone for the answer to my question. And sorry , AriAu, that I misunderstood your answer.
