When  did Chris start announcing the length of the commercial breaks?  I just noticed this Monday and today (20th and 21st), and it makes me crazy.  "We're taking a break for two minutes."  "We will be right back in 60 seconds."  It actually makes me nervous, like I am on a time clock.  I am not hearing this on the other evening shows.

At least there's a mention. I swear the breaks seem longer than that with a lot of shows these days.

The media is making me sick these days, literally ill, with their obsession with Trump and everything he says and does. Are they really so clueless that they don't comprehend what they're doing to the country with their incredibly biased constant coverage of Trump? And even boyfriend Chris Hayes is as complicit as the rest of MSNBC. Tonight he breathlessly led off his show with "an international press conference devolves into a global therapy session on Trump!!!!!!!!!"

No, Chris, that's not how it went down and it was the media that took it down. Jeebuz Murphy, the three government leaders had all talked for some time about climate change, immigration, trade, terrorism - you know, stuff that really matters? - and outlined their policies and the steps that they had agreed to take pertaining those issues. The media steps up to ask questions and did they ask one thing about those critical matters? No, they immediately start asking about Trump, as if it matters a goddamn whit what garbage Trump has spouted about whatever he lies about. I hold the media 100% responsible for what they have unleashed on the country, and the world, by not treating Trump as the con man scam artist he is.

I had watched the Obama/Clinton first joint appearance and enjoyed it -- but enjoyed Chris Hayes' reporting on it even more on Monday evening.  It seemed even more energetic the way he presented it.

Tonight he really is asking Senator Sanders the hard questions of "she has more votes, and you both will never agree on all policy points, so at what point do you acknowledge this?" and got a grudging admission from Sanders that an endorsement is on the way, which is the closest I have heard him come to saying he will endorse her, instead of his usual dodging the question with "we are going to Philadelphia to carry our agenda forward."

And I do love his "bottom ten" list of Trump's worst hits, with the updates.  Number one (=bottom of the bottom): "Praising Saddam Hussain"

I wish just for once when Bernie is prattling on about how he will do everything in his power to stop Donald Trump that Chris would pipe in and say "How?". He hasn't done a damn thing yet and he certainly has never told anyone what he intends to do because he's always too busy blathering on about his own ambitions.

I had a feeling Chris would be in Dallas by today, and indeed he is -- he is doing a great job leaving space for the residents and officials of Dallas to speak (no talking over them, like other on-air personalities), and he also provides such a great balance of the shock of the events in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and St. Paul, with the need for thoughtful reporting.

I hate that these tragedies are happening, but I generally feel a bit better when it's Chris who's covering them, especially on the ground.  He seems to genuinely care for and respect the people he interviews, shown in things like extending his condolences to the rapid transit chief and expressing his relief that Mark Hughes is okay.  He and Trymaine Lee are MSNBC's best on location team, I think.

So glad to find this thread with  others who think Chris Hayes is great! Couldn't agree more with the posts about him covering Dallas. He was wonderful with Mark Hughes--and Hughes' very articulate brother. He somehow combines being respectful and compassionate with asking good, often probing or uncomfortable questions, but from a place of sincerity, because they're things that people will benefit from knowing and thinking about.  And not a trace of smugness (unlike BriWms & LOD) and never rude to his guests (like Chris Matthews is nearly all of the time). After a day of looking for good coverage on ANY channel, it was wonderful to find Chris on tonight.

I know his show doesn't get the ratings others do, so  kudos to MSNBC for keeping him on-air. Hopefully that will never change.

"Sincerity" is the perfect word for Chris -- he combines that with a humane approach that still does not get in the way of his ability to be the reporter rather than the empathizer or moralizer.  I think he has a natural skill for the balance this requires.

Chris Hayes had Jelani Cobb and this cop guy on.

The cop guy, of course, had a lot of complaints about what Obama didn't say. But correct me if I'm wrong -- didn't Obama say much of what the cop dude claimed he didn't say?

He did. But cop dude wouldn't, couldn't, or didn't hear it. He wouldn't even listen to Chris. I think Chris just gave up on him. Wasn't this the same cop dude on last night?

Yep.  And last night he did a glorious take-down of Rudy G.  But tonight he indeed didn't listen - to Obama or anyone else.

I think the cop was conveying how not only he understood, but how the rest of the cops understood Obama's speech for the most part. And I got that overall, they thought he was talking down to them/chastising them.

I did agree with him when he said about twice that Obama is damned no matter what he does/says, he can't win.

I also heard when he said that to the cops, blue collar guys/gals, all they see when they look at Obama is someone who is elite, something to that effect. I've heard this criticism before, that he comes off as if he's chastising, looking down on...

He cannot win, he's too elite, not blue collar enough, too uppity, not black enough for some in the black community, it doesn't matter.

He . Can. Not. Win.

On the other hand, when I heard reporters previewing what he might say in the speech, I knew it wouldn't go down too well with the cops. For this day, they only wanted him to focus on them and their sacrifices and to be spoken of in a positive light. Not that he didn't, but there was also criticism. And yes it was of ALL of us he was criticizing including himself, no one was exempt. But on this day, they just didn't want to hear what they needed to do, to be better.

He tried to weave in how we got to this point and tie it in with not letting the death of the five officers be in vain. So if we all continue to work toward unity by admitting our handicaps, progress will continue like it has been there in Dallas and their deaths wouldn't be in vein. I saw how he tried to weave that together, but their wounds were way too fresh to receive that message. Because based on what I've heard about the Dallas police department, under any other circumstances they would be open. They seem to be making effective changes. But not today, they couldn't take it.

This is me, trying to put myself in their shoes.

I was very happy to see Irin Carmon on defending RBG. I feel like some of the criticisms of her comments comes from a 'woman should shut up' place rather than a 'scotus should shut up' one, since the only blowback Scalia ever got was brushed away with 'Scalia's gonna Scalia' dismissals. And I like the phrase 'incandescently angry.'

I cannot with the remarks about RBG with the memory of justices not showing up for the SOTU, which is an obvious political statement, or Scalia duck hunting with Cheney whilst he was under investigation.

I'm saddened that RBG was forced to write an apology this morning. tRump is an  existential threat to mankind.

What stands out for me the most is her model example of actually giving an apology.

That's what reporters should focus on since it's something that I've never seen Trump do.  He's actually gone out of his way to say that he won't apologize.

That aside, when I heard what she said, I was like WTH? There was a time in this country when most of the general public would have had no idea what the voice of a Supreme Court judge even sounded like.  There was a time when I don't remember them giving interviews, you'd be lucky to remember what they looked like, let's get back to that. We know they have their own personal politics but it should never be front and center as they need to appear impartial.

I know the world feels like it's coming to an end but...LOL

I wonder how he got those great guests to come on that late--Chris is a little high energy for bedtime --I usually do his show--and Rachel is a little less high energy--then Laurence is usually calmer so I can kind of wind down, but I happened to be up late and I thought the 11 pm show was better than his regular slot last night.

It reminded me of how "Up with Chris Hayes" was run.  Have a panel spend multiple segments going in-depth on a topic.  The 8 p.m. show is much more conventional in how it structures its' segments.

These people are insane. If you want my black vote then Mitch McConnell and the leaders of the republican party with Trump at the front can start by making a public apology to Obama for the Birther Movement.  Otherwise, I'll never vote republican again, and I have voted that way twice in my life time.  They refuse to get how offensive that movement was to black folks, they don't get it.  Do they really not get that?  I'll never forget it.  I want humility something that not only Trump lacks. They'd like to act like they are better than him on this front, nope, they're not. You say it was wrong, you say it was disgraceful, you say it was bigotry, end of story. They can go to the black church all they want, they won't find me there. I was raised Roman Catholic. I didn't grow up in the black church so Omarosa and her band of sleazy pastors can go preach it elsewhere.   She's another one who makes me want to hurl, she and Pastor Devil Darrell Scott.

When you get invited to speak by the NAACP, go, they won't bite. They have manners, maybe they won't clap, but they won't be allowed to boo either. You're not going to some rally of unruly people. Hell go to the smaller events like the organizations for black business owners, business? That's supposed to be right up their alley, but they don't have the courage to at least show up for something like that.

Yeah, Hillary is weak, right. She took her ass down to West Virginia just so they could look her in the face and tell her ass off and that's exactly what they did. She sat there and took it. While the rest of the people stood outside with pitch forks.

Bye, just bye republican party, cowards.

Joy is so good as a substitute in prime time. Such good, cheerful energy, but not in a perky/dumb way. Her weekend show has been bigfooted by five-rings coverage lately. Here's my idea: if they want something live for the 11 pm hour, instead of having Chris work both, why not give that slot to Joy? More Joy, is my point. Yeah, it's probably a temp thing until the elections, but still: More Joy!

Attica, Brian Williams is taking over 11 pm from Labor Day through the elections--I think they're just rotating other people in to fill the slot until he starts.

I've heard Matthews might be retiring after Nov--so I'm hoping Joy takes his place--I enjoy her a lot too.  She's done an excellent job on All In and she's a good lead in for Rachel.

Well that's bad news. :(

Is it terrible for me to want Matthews not retire?  On second thought, I'm not sure I want to hear him spitting out criticisms of the Clinton Administration v2.0.

I guffawed at Chris' "Katie Packer, Katie Packer" last night - she wasn't stupid rabid GOP up until Real Time and this last week on MSNBC, I thought maybe she was a reasonable Republican, whoops, my bad.

Also, @Lexx I agree that the late night live version reminded me of "Up" a show that Kornacki ruined and I miss so much, which in turn made miss MHP, though I've come to appreciate A.M. Joy as well.
