The Geekiary:

We Are Breaking Up With Supernatural

Seems like they are faulting fandom

upernatural, we love you. You have been on the air for eleven seasons, and very few genre shows have had such an impact on our staff like you have. Some of us would even argue that this past season has been the strongest in years. But…it is time to break up.

This is not a decision that we have taken lightly. Lots of conversations have happened behind closed doors, because you still have so many amazing qualities that we love. This show is what brought many of the original founders of this website together, and the fandom was a huge source of support in our early years.  We’ll never forget the love and support the SPN fandom gave us as we got our feet off the ground over three years ago.  But our coverage of this show has also caused a lot of grief, and as with any breakup, once the negatives start to outweigh the positives, it’s time to let go.

For many of us, the show just isn’t fun anymore. We will always love the paranormal and folklore stories, the amazing characters, and the way that it has brought so many fans together. We will always love the extracurricular causes that it has introduced fans to, like Always Keep Fighting or Random Acts. We will always love Jared, Jensen, Misha, and Mark – they are incredible storytellers and wonderful to their fans. Sam, Dean, Cas, and Crowley are some of the most beloved characters on TV, and they continue to impress us with their growth. We will also always love Kevin, Charlie, Bobby, Jody, and the other dozens of supporting and recurring characters who made us love the show in new and exciting ways.  But our love for these elements doesn’t outweigh the negative anymore.

Some may feel that our coverage of the show has alienated some groups within the fandom. That was never our intent. Supernatural is for lovers, and all fans should be united in their love for this show, the actors, the characters, the writers, and the show runners. That is one of the many reasons that we have decided to not cover the show any longer. Fandom and the love of geeky things and genre TV and film should be inclusive.  Fandom is for everyone.

We will still be covering our scheduled conventions relating to the show, including the Creation Salute to Supernatural convention in 2017, but we will not be adding any new show-specific conventions to our calendar.   We will continue to cover positive fandom related activities such as Gishwhes and Random Acts as they have many participants not involved in the show itself and have created a positive impact on the world at large.  We may also feature artists in Fan Artist Fridays who may have ties or works within that fandom.  We may also still mention the show when discussing larger encompassing themes regarding genre TV or geek culture.  But we will no longer be covering the show on an episode-by-episode basis, hosting roundtables, or publishing show-specific analysis or news.

In other words, the topic may come up in larger discussions and we’ll be finishing the things we are currently committed to (including conventions and Fan Artist Fridays), but we will no longer post articles exclusively about the show or add any new commitments beyond those that are already promised.

To those fans who came to The Geekiary out of love for Supernatural, THANK YOU. We hope that you stick around for our news and coverage for other TV shows, film, comics, and all other forms of media that we cover. We wouldn’t be here without you, and although you may not agree with our decision, we do hope that you respect it. This isn’t easy for us either. But as other projects begin to grow and fandom constantly changes, we think it best to shift our focus to other things. Besides, we have more staff who are unfamiliar with Supernatural than are active fans. It’s time.

Thank you for your support,
The Administration Team

I saw their live broadcast a week or so ago.  I think some of The Geekiary members who don't watch Supernatural were starting to get tagged in wank posts. I don't know how much/if any of that influenced their decision but the "quitting Supernatural" was brought up during that conversation. Sometimes when you think of "going", no matter what caused you to think of it, you just gotta go.

They need the Mallet Of Loving Kindness (TM John Scalzi) for their comment section.  John patrols his blog comments fiercely, and, as a result, he has some very high quality comments and commenters.  But it's a lot of work.

That's just sad that the writers have been subjected to that kind of stuff.

I am totally unaware of this site, so I can't really comment on any of it other than to say that the SPN fandom does seem to be rather polarized.  You're either a J2 shipper, a Destial shipper, a Cockles shipper, a Wincest shipper, or a non-shipper, and none of those factions are shy about expressing their displeasure at the others.  There's some pretty nasty stuff out there, and I have to say some fairly delusional people.  Go ahead and have your fantasy ship, but leave the actors real lives out of it.  I've read some horrible things about their wives, their children, etc., that are just mind boggling.  I can only imagine the sort of comments these writers have received.

I am a ship-as-you-like person.  I may not like or understand your ship, but I can't comprehend folks who go out of their way to, first, read something about a ship they don't like, and second, berate the person expressing those opinions.

The nasty comments about wives etc. are just creepy.  Do these people realize how they sound?

Mom will have to be the tough one...lol One thing in her favor is that her dad wears makeup for his job.  But it is too cute.

Jared won't have these issues since he's got boys.  When she starts dating then she may have a problem...

Holy crap. That's frakking hilarious. This poor girl. That is A+ trolling that's actually funny. And once more proves that Supernatural has a gif or pic for literally EVERYTHING.  I laughed til I cried on that one.
