"The Biggest Regret of My Whole Career": Will Forte Missed Out on Doing 'The Amazing Race' With Val Kilmer
Michael Block   April 6, 2025
https://collider.com/val-kilmer-will-forte-the-amazing-race-regrets/

Quote

If these two stars had their way, they would have been in the greatest race around the world. Following the recent passing of Val Kilmer, his friend and former roommate, Will Forte, paid tribute to his dear friend. In an essay penned for Vulture, Forte shared one of his deepest regrets in his career that involved the late actor, The Amazing Race. Forte wrote, "I used to watch The Amazing Race, and he came back home at some point when I was watching it and was like, 'What are you watching that garbage for? Come on, that stuff's going to rot your mind.' I said, 'It's pretty good. You should sit down and watch it. Give it a try before you s—t on it.' So he sat down, and he started watching it, and he got really into it." Kilmer's newfound passion for the long-running competition series prompted a brilliant idea.

Kilmer convinced Forte to consider teaming up for The Amazing Race, but not everyone was on board. When the pair pitched the idea to their agents, the idea was turned down. "At a certain point, he said, 'Will, you and I have to go do The Amazing Race. We have to. Let's do The Amazing Race.' I'm like, 'I am so fully in,'" Forte shared.

"We got really excited about it, and then we called our respective agents and managers, and they were like, 'There's no way you guys are doing that.' That is, maybe to this day, the biggest regret of my whole career — that I never did The Amazing Race with Val. I think we would've gotten out very quickly, but it just would've been the experience of a lifetime."

Q&A: Meet the Latter-day Saint couple combatting religious stereotypes on reality TV
Scott and Lori Thompson wanted to win ‘The Amazing Race.’ They also wanted to challenge narrow views of their often misunderstood religion
By Kelsey Dallas   April 6, 2025
https://www.deseret.com/faith/2025/04/06/mormon-amazing-race-scott-lori/

Quote

Deseret News: Why did you apply for the show?

Lori Thompson: We love “The Amazing Race.” We love a lot of reality shows, like “Big Brother” and “Survivor.”

I’ve actually auditioned for “Survivor” the last six years and kind of gone through that process a little ways. For 15 years, I was pregnant or nursing and couldn’t apply to any of those shows, so I was excited to start applying.

We thought I would get on “Survivor” and that it would be our hook to get on “The Amazing Race,” but we decided to apply directly and made a video the same day. A month later, we got a call from one of our casting producers and here we are.

DN: What was your pitch to producers? How did you present yourself to the show?

Lori: Our hook was our eight sons, but we also have great banter, like how we can tell a story and interrupt each other, like “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe you told them that.”

We just kind of went off the cuff (in the audition video). Scott told some stories — including ones I was kind of embarrassed about — and it made it authentic and unique and more fun.
*  *  *
DN: How did you want to be seen by fans of “The Amazing Race”?

Lori: Two different things were incredibly important to me.

First, as an older mom, I wanted to remind other moms that they’re not just moms. They’re so much more than that. They’re powerful and amazing.

You don’t live your life just because you’re a mom. You live your life because you’re a unique human being.

I really wanted to make sure that I made it clear that even 50-year-old women could do these crazy challenges and travel across the world. We can do hard things and sometimes we fail and sometimes we prevail but we can do it.

The second thing is I really wanted to let people know that we are a fun, amazing, kind couple that is members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A lot of times we are discounted, like “Oh they’re Mormon, we don’t want anything to do with that.” We’ve seen quite a bit of that with reality TV in the past.

Scott: We went in and had the intentionality of wanting to depict ourselves as in Paul’s letter to Timothy where he said, “Be an example of the believers.” We just wanted to be examples of what we thought believers look like, which is authentic to who we are every day of our lives anyways.

So often, we got the response from other racers and production people, “You’re not what we thought Utah Mormons would be like,” and we appreciated that.

Lori: It was a compliment.

Scott: That meant we were fracturing a little bit of a stereotype others had in their minds, and we were accomplishing the goal we were going in with, which was showing them an example of believers.

Lori: There was a moment in the very first episode — Carson and Jack, who are best friends and who are gay, they were doing some sort of voguing in the airport and Scott started singing “Cover Girl” from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

Let’s face it, most typical LDS members aren’t into “Drag Race.” That broke barriers down, and we ended up being really, really close to them.

Jonathan was diagnosed with ASD after they returned from the race. I haven’t had time to view all their podcasts, but did see the first half of this one, and I intend to give them some compassion for the rest of this season. This is not to deny that he acted like a jerk - he did, and admits it, and is working on it - but it makes sense that his neurological system just couldn’t handle the lack of control you have when you’re racing,

We already knew 38 was airing in the fall. Canceling The Summit does not guarantee we are getting 2 seasons in the next 25-26 window. Likely? Perhaps. But nothing announced.

Season 39 has just wrapped up casting as filming of that upcoming season taking place this October for Spring 2026 airdate.

Info from Reddit

Season 38 is scheduled to air this fall and Season 39 next spring. Both will after Survivor 49 and Survivor 50 respectively.

Yeah the final plan differs from what was reported or mentioned previously.  Which isn't a big deal at the end of the day, especially when you factor in CBS and/or whomever wanting to air Season 40 during the spring season.

Of course, CBS would have to go with TWO seasons during the 2026-2027 TV year in order to get that season to air in the spring season.  I'm not sure that will happen.  At least the show is airing period.  Just may have been better in the spring of 2026 instead of autumn of 2025

Due to this, season 32 would have aired in summer 2020 if COVID did not happen and the original filming of season 33 should have directly proceeded and could be aired in spring 2021. Because the 33rd season had a long filming break because of COVID and did not resume until fall 2021.

Secondly, the original TAR35 would've been aired in spring 2023 but was pushed and became season 36. The 36th filmed season became TAR35 and aired as planned. The current season filmed last summer and could've been aired last fall because The Summit took its place.

Because of Padma Lakshmi's new cooking show America's Culinary Cup will air after Survivor 50 and will be 60-minute episodes. If the show will fail to show viewership and declining ratings, TAR39 could be moved to a normal schedule as the 39th season will begin filming this fall (likely October). The former show will be moved to Saturdays as a burn-off program.

Now on to Jonathan. In the last couple episodes, dude seemed to chill out and dull down his sharper edges. He was no longer copping an attitude. No longer in need of a snack and nap time. And then France happened. Jonathan is quick to blame his wife for everything under the sun: Their performance at the cheese task, taking too long to write down directions, not driving fast enough. Then he chides her for… writing the directions down wrong!? He even says she’s a “terrible partner” — the audacity! I do not envy Ana in this moment. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: That woman is a SAINT for keeping her cool.

Stockholm Syndrome! Notice at the finish line. Phil says: "Kind of a rough day". Jonathan answers with a smile "I got knocked in the water by Carson. It was wild." Ana says "I made a lot of mistakes. I lost my bearings". In other words, Jonathan feels he had some minor difficulties but it was still cool. Ana feels she made major mistakes and blames herself (and this is when they finished third). Ana did almost all of the washing detour by herself, didn't she? And yet she feels like the weaker partner.

As I told before, TAR39 had already concluded its casting over a week ago. Semifinal interviews are set to begin later in the month, then finals will be in mid-July. TAR39 will start filming this fall and will air sometime in 2026.

The 38th season had recently filmed earlier this year

Spoiler

With destinations all over Europe including former communist countries of Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Montenegro (the latter two were part of Yugoslavia during the much of the 20th century), and Romania

There could be a 40th season and will be filmed in summer 2026.

The Amazing Race is barreling toward its big Season 37 finale, and it all kicks off Wednesday in its regular time slot. (Part 2 will follow Thursday at 9/8c on CBS.) But which team has what it takes to come out on top?
*  *  *
“This particular season was unique,” host Phil Keoghan tells TVLine. “We started off with having surprises in every single episode and I think that worked pretty well, [but] it was back to the things that everybody loves. No matter what kind of twists and turns and hiccups we put into the show, at the end of the day, the things [fans] really talk about the most are the simple things: the self-driving, the airport drama and the fundamental elements of The Amazing Race, which is going to new places and doing new things with new people.”

Below, Keoghan gives us his take on the Race’s remaining teams and explains why each duo still has a fighting chance to win the million dollars.
*  *  *
“I gotta tell you,” the host says before we sign off. “For our finale, we head back to the United States and we literally got hit with a major weather bomb. It made the finale pretty exciting. It was a stormy finish. A challenging one for us and also for the teams.”

Jonathan takes responsibility for his actions on the show. While managing to throw in a bunch of excuses. And Ana covers for him again.

The reality TV contestant came under fire following the May 7 episode of the CBS competition, in which he was seen calling Ana a "terrible partner," following a season of questionable behavior and comments toward her. Now, in a new video shared to the couple's YouTube channel, Jonathan is directly addressing the controversy, and offering his wife and viewers a heartfelt apology....

While Jonathan acknowledged that there may be contributing factors behind his actions, he made it clear that he takes full accountability.

"I mean, we could talk about generational trauma, we could talk about childhood programming and in your upbringing, we could talk about autism, but ultimately, none of that stuff matters, OK?," he said. "I am, at the end of the day, 100 percent responsible for how I direct my anger and who I direct it on, and in this case, I directed that anger onto my wife, which should never, ever happen. That's on me."...

"When I'm on The Race, unlike when I'm at home, I cannot control the external factors. I have no control -- my routines are completely non-existent. And we rely on -- people like me rely on routines in order to help us regulate our emotions and to control the amount of stimulus that we can get at any given time."

Ana also addressed her husband's on-screen behavior, saying his "child-like tantrums" were "alarming" to her as well.

Attributing his actions to his recent autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, Ana suggested that his reactions were influenced by the challenges of the race environment. "This was the first time I've seen you this unhinged, angry and that's why I think context is so important," she added, saying his behavior is "not something that happens all the time" at home.

"Keep an open mind and show a little grace and understanding when it comes to watching these edits," she added, while he reiterated his behavior was "not acceptable at all."

I am sorry that you choose to see what he says here as excuses.  To see someone on the Autism Spectrum have "an episode" is alarming, and from an outsiders perception not knowing what is going through their brain at the moment and what the tiger might be can be scary and confusing.

I am sorry that you choose to see what Ana says as "covering up again". I choose to believe it as understanding and love for a person who is different.

Jonathan admits that he needs structure and routine, and, yet, he applied to and chose to appear on a television show where lack of structure and routine are the norm.  Whether he was diagnosed pre or post race with PTSD or ASD or anything else; surely he knew this fact about himself and yet he did the show anyway.  Just as we criticize racers who don't know how to swim, are petrified of heights or don't know how to drive a standard transmission; it is perfectly valid, IMO, to criticize Jonathan for participating in the race all the while knowing it was going to cause him to melt down and verbally abuse his wife. This cannot be the first time in his life he's been unable to maintain structure and routine in his day.  He's 42 years old for goodness' sakes.

He did not know he needed structure and routines when he applied and during the taping of the show last May, he did not discover this until AFTER the race was filmed.  He did not know what his triggers would be in a place like the race where there are not routines that he can control.

I'm not sure how you know this; but a person doesn't have to be on the spectrum to function best in a structured setting.  Just like many people don't function well on minimal sleep or without regular meals; there are plenty of people without an ASD diagnosis who would have problems with the pacing and logistics of the Amazing Race.  I find it very hard to believe that, by age 42 and after 15 years of marriage, that this was the very first time that Jonathan displayed this dynamic with Ana nor that he didn't realize before the race that he was not well suited to it. Instead, I think he thought his treatment of his wife was perfectly ok and typical of healthy married behavior and was stunned when the public didn't immediately agree with his POV and instead felt sorry for his poor wife.

Jonathan had to have known what the schedule is like on the race, the show has been on the air for more than 25 years.  And there's no way he didn't know how he would respond when faced with the lack of routine and structure.  The man went to college, he has held a job and helped raise 2 kids; this was not the first time he would've needed to cope with pressures and lack of structure and schedule.

The fact that, even in their post race interviews, even after he says he received a clinical diagnosis of ASD; Jonathan STILL referred to his meltdowns as 'fights' and both he and Ana state that this is typical behavior in their marriage.  Those were NOT typical marital fights; that was one person viciously and cruelly blaming the other when things weren't going his way while the other was expected to repeatedly apologize to him for things that were not her doing.

I do not know how your timeline you mentioned could be true considering he sought help and support LAST YEAR before the public even knew he was on the show.  You have no idea "what he knew or did not know about how he would respond on the show" before it happened.  Just because he went to college and had a job is not the same as the pressures of being on The Amazing Race.  If he thought his behavior "was perfectly ok", he would not have sought out help after the show was taped.  I am sorry you do not agree with the choice of words "fights" that Johnathan chooses to use, those were his words, and it is important to remember that words do not always have the same meaning to every person.  It could "be typical" because it is the way HIS BRAIN WORK, he can not change that no matter if he wants to or society wants him too.  His lashing out was him getting his frustrations out of his body, and the words landed on the person who was closest to him at the time.    Of corse they "were not typical fights", there is a lot not typical of the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This is in reference to Han and Holden having a fender bender accident in the last episode...

The Amazing Race’s Phil Keoghan Details Production Protocol for Mid-Race Fender Benders
By Nick Caruso   May 18, 2025

According to host Phil Keoghan, teams are (obviously) supposed to abide by the local road rules and speed limits no matter where they are in the world. And they absolutely must stop and address any arising issue, no matter how much time it costs them.

“We make the teams accountable,” the host tells TVLine. “If they get a speeding ticket, that’s on them. We’re not going to just pick up the bill and get them off the hook.”

The crew will also give teams verbal warnings if they see a driver speeding or if they feel unsafe with any particular driver.

“[It’s] almost like you’ve got a policeman in the car saying, ‘Hey, slow down,'” Keoghan adds. “And then if they continue to do it, they’ll get penalized. So they can have a double, meaning we can give them a penalty for exceeding the limit or if crew feels unsafe because of the driving practices. Then there’s also police monitoring what’s going on in the real world, and if in the real world, the police catch them speeding, then they’re going to suffer the consequences.”
