S2.E00: Olympics

Recommended Posts

Quote

A Cloud 9 Olympics promotion gives Amy the chance to meet her childhood hero, gold medal-winning gymnast Missy Jones. Meanwhile, storewide "Olympic fever" causes Glenn to have some difficulty balancing his extreme patriotism, Jonah to learn a secret about Mateo's past and Dina strives to create a "closing ceremony" her colleagues will never forget.

An Olympic special.

Was this some piss poor attempt to get me to watch the Olympics? I mean it worked for the first four minutes that my dvr added on the Olympic coverage, but it didn't work in getting me to care that my dvr cut off the last four minutes.  If this is season 1, is it an attempt to stop my outrage that Halloween candy is already being sold in August or an attempt to cover up the fact that this years Olympics has the lowest viewer average since the 90's?

My DVR shows it as S2, E1, but then also says Season Premiere Coming Soon.  (The bug on the screen said premiere September 22.)  And because Olympic coverage ran over, I didn't get the ending because the DVR cut off at 30 minutes.  And it's not in my On Demand to catch up.

Obviously there's an Olympic tie-in, but its placement at 10:30 pm on Friday a couple of weeks into the games doesn't seem to be designed to get people to watch.

Is Cheyenne still supposed to be pregnant?  I thought she had the baby already but she looked totally pregnant.

I think they were trying to get Olympics fans to watch Superstore, not the other way around. It's like putting a show on after the Superbowl-- it's supposed to boost interest and future ratings for the show in the after slot.

Nothing about it had continuity with the story they were telling before. Not only Cheyenne still being pregnant, but also in the season 1 finale, everyone walked off the job in protest, and in this episode that whole conflict appears not to have occurred. So I think this is just an alternate universe, designed to get people to try the show without needing to know the storylines or characters beforehand.

The ending was that Dina did her "closing ceremony" with fireworks and a helicopter, and it was a huge spectacle. All the rest of the staff saw it as they were leaving work in the dark. None of them knew it was coming, and they all seemed to find it cool. Also, Cheyenne told Amy that she wasn't stupid, knew she couldn't be an Olympic gymnast, she just liked living in the fantasy, like when you buy a lottery ticket and talk about how you will spend the money even though you know you aren't going to win. And then Amy was talking to Jonah about how maybe she shouldn't have interfered with the fantasy, and Jonah said that she didn't mean to crush anyone's dreams, she just wanted to stop Cheyenne from dropping out of school.

I knew that Olympic gymnast looked familiar!

I spent most most of this episode pretty confused. My dvr listed it as season 2 ep 1. The girl still being pregnant I just couldn't get past that since I thought she gave birth the last episode. . I forgot they walked out at the end of season 1 too.

Tara Lapinski, Apolo Ohno, and McKayla Maroney's cameos were cute! I'm surprised they didn't get a past Olympian gymnast for Missy Jones. Dina's closing ceremony was kinda awesome in an aggressive Dina kind of way.

This was a cute episode, but if I weren't already a fan of the show, I don't think it would have turned me into one. These characters need a few episodes to grow on people, and most of their quirks (like Mateo's burning dislike for Jonah and the way Garrett likes to mess with people) were muted on this one. But I did love Dina checking out the food by tearing it in half and then throwing it away.

I liked the cameos too, especially Apolo Ohno trying to get around the lady who kept blocking him with her shopping cart. They should have gotten a Korean woman to push the cart though. Because I don't follow gymnastics or watch SNL, I didn't know Missy Jones wasn't a real gymnast, but I did think it was strange that she was so tall.

I think that this was filmed after the other episodes, because some of the actors looked a bit different - Mateo looked a lot puffier than usual and even Glenn looked like he had gained weight. But the 'timeline' was before the finale of season 1, bc obviously  Cheyenne was still pregnant and the crew hadn't walked out yet. The 'extra' who couldnt get past the lady pushing the cart looked so familiar and I couldnt place him. Thanks for revealing that it was Apolo Ohno! The opening bit with the inferno was simply hilarious. Was Mateo really speaking Filipino? The crew's shutting down GLenn's desperate attempts at multiculturalism was hilarious. "Sandra, who is from..." "hawaii." "Garrett, who is..." "Norwegian." "Huh?" "Swedish?" LOL. I love Garrett.

I don't think so. I believe the actor is Filipino, but that didn't sound like Tagalog to me; it sounded more like super rapid Spanish with some English mixed in.

How did Mark McKinney manage to make this character even worse?

I'm not sure you can blame the actor on this one.

I laughed so hard when Cheyenne was working the parallel bars and fell right on her stomache.

Why was there no cannon in the helicopter!? My favorite part about this episode (and this show has done it before) was that it sort of pretended to give some sort of classic sitcom moral lesson about making your dreams realistic, while simultaneously bashing that moral lesson right in the face. Let people live their fantasies, plus, Dina actually achieved her absurdly over the top unachievable fantasy.

Amy needs to stop messing with other people's lives.

When Cheyenne said, "Is that one of Glenn's posters?" I started laughing so hard my mom yelled threats down the stairwell.

Spoiler

To to the comment above, This ep is set sometime before the season finale, so apparently in show time Cheyenne's baby has yet to be born. According to one interview blurb I saw, Season 2 picks up exactly where season 1 left off.  So I guess they want us to think "Olympics" was shot in real time.

That's why he looked so familiar! I was trying to figure out where I had seen him before. I thought he was an actor from another show.
