I just figured we were seeing different aspects of Groot through his life cycle and, that GotG Vol1 Groot was just older/more mature. After reading James Gunn's tweets it makes sense that this is Groot's "son" or an off-shoot and, not Groot reborn. It only made sense to me because my siblings have each had a couple of kids who had a ton of personality as babies. The one who was mischievous as a newborn has stayed mischievous as a teenager. The one who was a whiner as a baby is still a whiner as a kid. The one who loved music and grumbled as a baby has stayed that way as a kid. Some of these personality traits were evident as early as 2 months old. I tell this story about the mischievous baby, now teen. My mom was taking a picture of my sister holding the baby (he was about 8 months old at that time). Right as my mom says "say cheese" he turns and bites my sister's face. He then turns back to the camera and gives a beautific baby face. My sister was screaming in the picture. He looked angelic. He's kind of the same 14 years later. Guardians 1 Groot is so sweet. Even when he's being violent, he always looks for validation. Baby Groot is not like that at all. Furthermore in the nature vs nurture debate, Guardians 1 Groot likely grew up with Groots. Baby Groot is being raised by Peter Quill, Rocket, Drax, and Gamora. Even if Baby Groot is genetically identical, he's still going to be different based on his environment. 6 Link to comment

I did think that could be part of it it, that being "raised" by Rocket, Drax, Gamora and Quill could have played a big part in his more violent tendencies. I'm going to miss Baby Groot he was just so freaking adorable. Not sure I'll like Moody Teenage Groot in the next movie. 4 Link to comment
HunterHunted February 28, 2018 Share February 28, 2018 Baby Groot is adorable looking. I both look forward to and dread moody teenage Groot because he might be the most realistic kid in the MCU. Shuri is a princess and a brilliant polymath. Spidey and friends are John Hughes-ian precocious. And Iron Man 3's, Harley is an idealized audience surrogate. Moody, surly, messy, and video game obsessed Groot might actually be the closest the MCU gets to depicting a regular kid. 7 Link to comment

Well, thinking ones kids have been secretly raised by aliens is a pretty common feeling among a lot of parents. "How did this happen?! We just went over this yesterday, was he abducted during the night and everything I said to him wiped out?! ALIENS!!" 3 Link to comment
JessePinkman March 1, 2018 Share March 1, 2018 I always thought of Baby Groot as more Groot's clone than his son. Like a reincarnation if anything. But it really doesn't matter. 6 Link to comment
romantic idiot March 1, 2018 Share March 1, 2018 Well at least now we've had a major character die so the hopefully the morbid death lovers will can stop calling for a 'meaningful' death to 'raise the stakes' in Infinity Wars. Like grow up and get some empathy already. 12 Link to comment

RIP original Groot. I mentioned this in the MCU thread but didn't James Gunn already say this when the movie was in theatres? The best I can find is an article about how baby Groot and old Groot don't have the same menories and it is complicated. https://screenrant.com/guardians-of-galaxy-2-baby-groot-memories/ Link to comment
xaxat March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 I believe that Groot is a clonal colony. Quote A clonal colony or genet is a group of genetically identical individuals, such as plants, fungi, or bacteria, that have grown in a given location, all originating vegetatively, not sexually, from a single ancestor. . . Above ground, these plants appear to be distinct individuals, but underground they remain interconnected and are all clones of the same plant. 4 Link to comment
