Artistic Gymnastics: Stick the Landing!

Recommended Posts

Watching vault now.  I love Horton and the Other Guy (he said his name and I still can't remember) talking about how awesome Courtney was in college and even being all "say how awesome you were!"  Meanwhile, Tim and Shut UP Al barely remember that Nastia won five medals in '08 and would have a more contemporary perspective./bitter

Wasn't there reporting that Gabby was fifth on the team over Ashton? The NBC stream announcer keeps saying Madison was the last one.

Aly and Laurie look disappointed for Madison in the stands.

Madison qualified 8th, but kicked ass on bars -- which is what was needed.

Once again, points to Horton.  I have NEVER seen Tim break down vault scores the way Horton just did.  Horton talked about how the judges look at the pre-flight, the moment on the actual vault, and the time in the air to determine the score.  All Tim's ever done is talk about landings and ignore what happened before (unless it was really obvious, like bent arms and even then he'll only do it if the landing sucked).  To bring it back to Maroney in '12, that's one of the reasons he and Elfie being pissed that she didn't get a perfect score in team finals made me crazy.  I've never been a gymnast but I've watched enough to immediately see the tiny mistakes she made that kept that score from being perfect (slight leg separation, toes crossed, stepping out of the landing as soon as her feet touched indicating that it wasn't stable enough for the kind of stick the judges want).  Yet those fools were all "That's wrong!" and "How DARE they??!!" When her (monster but not perfect) vault score came up.

She placed 8th overall, but that's not what determines who makes the team. It's up to Marta who she wants. Reporting (that I read) was that she was iffy on Gabby and considered taking Ashton instead.

Exactly. I don't know why the commentators keep bring up trials score. Marta was looking for a team that covered all based. Another all-arounder wasn't needed.

I wanted Madison to win so that we could sweep ALL the golds!!! #greedy #sorrynotsorry  From the angle of the live stream, it was hard to see most of what Maddy's deductions were, so I really appreciate Courtney and Jonathan breaking down why her score was pretty fair; I still would've scored her highest. :-D  Aliya's routine was truly great, though, so it's not like anyone was robbed.  I'm sorry Gabby didn't medal, but she looks happy the whole thing is over.  Very happy for Scheder!

I just notice that Aliya has the glittery eyeliner thing going on TOP of the smokey eye, so people need to back off Simone! LOL

I was reading that the reason they are bedazzling the leos is because it helps them to show up in the arena -- even though it's a little overkill on television. I wonder if the glittery eyeliner works better when we're not seeing in through a camera lens practically shoved of the gymnast's nose.

In addition to being the first defending World AA champion to then win the Olympics, Simone is also the first Olympic AA champion to then win an individual gold since 96.  And that isn't exactly common for AA winners.  Lilia won AA and floor, Nadia won AA, bars and beam, Věra Čáslavská won AA, vault, beam and then AA, vault, bars, floor, and Larisa Latynina won AA, vault, floor and then AA, floor.  That's it.  Plenty of AA winners have also won a team gold but it's surprisingly rare for them to win a second individual gold.  So another bravo to Simone for pulling this off AND being the first American to win vault.

Will NBC mention this in their big primtime airing?  Nope.  They're too busy talking over Nastia, making generalizations and patting themselves on the back for correctly predicting stuff they already knew would happen.

Wow. That's some stellar company and she's not even done yet. If she can win two more golds, she will set a record for the women. It will be interesting to see if she continues although I don't think she will. Maybe one more Worlds but I can't imagine continuing under this code for two Olympics unless she becomes a specialist.

All of the ladies on that list excluding Lilia P. competed in 2 or more Olympics. There's no way Latynina will ever by surpassed.

Toally forgot the event finals started today; I assume we'll at least see the UB final because Madison got a medal! ;-) Congrats to Aliya; her bars routine was fantastic on Thursday so I was expecting her to win today!

Sounds like Naddor got a medal... Bummer about Jake on the floor; I was hoping h or Sam would keep it competitive, but alas.

I just started following Simone on Snapchat, and today she posted a really cute video of herself in a waiting room before event finals. She turns the camera to Gabby, who gives an exaggerated eyebrow raise, then smiles and giggles, and then to Madison, who makes a goofy face.

For all the allegations about her not getting along, isolating herself, being unhappy, etc. this was an utterly adorable, spontaneous interaction among the three of them.

Damn poor Gabby but damn Aliya.

And American man medals in gymnastics.  On pommel horse.  Well clearly we are in the upside down.

Bit for reals, yay Alex.

Typical #USMenBronze. Who was the US male gymnast that made the inane comment after the team won Bronze in '08 "that's how we roll". Way to aim high guys.
