I made the mistake of looking up how Snow White is doing. It’s kind of hilarious watching people trying to claim some kind of culture wars victory as though the movie doesn’t look like shit. They could have found perfect actors and this thing would still bomb entirely based on poor production choices.

Also, entertainment reporters are a little too in love with dwarf name puns.

Snow White was my favorite movie as a child. I even told my Sunday school teacher my real name was Snow White and that my family just called me Lisa. I still cry every time I watch the original movie. This movie will always have a very special place in my heart.

My issue with Ms. Zegler is why did you tame the role of Snow White if you have so much contempt for the character? She has alienated so many people.

And yes I agree the dwarves are just awful.

As someone who mostly agrees with Ziegler’s take, I just want to say that having big issues with the movie is not the same as having contempt for the character of Snow White. I love Snow White as a character.

She didn’t say that. She only compared her version to the original.

I understand people feeling like she disrespected the legacy of Snow and she certainly could have said it with more tact but mostly think the I reaction is insanely overblown. Largely by people who don’t give a shit about the legacy of Snow White.

Weekend Box Office: Snow White Opens with $43 Million
The latest live-action adaptation of a Disney animated classic did manage to win the weekend handily, even though it undershot its projected numbers and faces a steep uphill climb to break even.
by Erik Childress | March 24, 2025
https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/weekend-box-office-snow-white-opens-with-43-million/

Quote

As much as we wanted to believe that the upcoming live-action adaptation by Disney was going to provide a spark to the theatrical box office, that was pretty much quashed this weekend. Sure, it had the second best opening of the year, but then you realize Den of Thieves 2 is currently the fifth best of 2025 and you go ho-hum instead of hi-ho. Yes it could be the second film (or maybe even the third) to gross $100 million, but these films have been good for at least twice that or even more. Here we are looking towards the end of March with 10 of the 11 weekends at the box office earning less than $100 million, with hopes that Minecraft will be the blockbuster theaters need.
*  *  *
It should be noted that 2024 did not hit a $100 million three-day weekend in its first two months, but then hit three in March thanks to Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The discussion looms about audiences embracing original entertainment outside the comfort of their own homes, but until then, we have Disney’s Snow White opening to $43 million, well below the hopeful $50+ million that tracking was suggesting. It is also well below the recent spate of live-action remakes of Disney animated films, including The Jungle Book ($103.2 million), Beauty and the Beast ($174.7 million), Aladdin ($91.5 million), and The Little Mermaid ($95.5 million). This is more along the lines of Dumbo territory, and even that was higher with $45.9 million.

Dumbo finished out its run with $114.7 million domestic and cleared over $238 million overseas. So it was a bomb, but a quaint bomb with a $170 million budget compared to what Snow White could be with a budget reportedly as high as $270 million. That would put it among the 15 most expensive motion pictures ever, up there with other Disney misfires like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Marvels, which, by the way, also opened higher with $46.1 million but carried the same $270 million price tag. Snow White should still be better than that (starting with $44.3 million overseas), but to even be in the same conversation should be a red flag. Marc Webb’s film has been beset with bad ink ever since its inception, from Peter Dinklage’s comments about its portrayal of dwarfism to reactions to Gal Gadot’s thoughts on Gaza. Reviews have not been great, and the only live-action film since 2000 to open in March with less than $50 million and gross over $150 million was Wild Hogs. That won’t do for Snow White. That won’t do.

'Disney’s ‘Tangled’ Live-Action Movie Hits the Pause Button'

^There's not much more info than what's in the title.

On one hand, yes-- maybe slow down on the remakes; on the other hand, Tangled is one of my favorite princess movies from the CGI era, and I was curious about how they would interpret it for live action.

---

The article also mentions that a live-action Hercules is in development; and for that one, I think I'd rather them perfect the stage show instead.  I dunno, the original is very "nineties"; and yes, I'm sure they'd update the references, but I feel like it has a certain 'vibe' that can't really be replicated.

I think Tangled is a movie which could really work in the live action format.  It's more modern to begin with so it wouldn't need so much updating that it warps it out of recognition.  Honestly Disney should've skipped a live action Snow White altogether and done Tangled instead.

I would definitely prefer a live-action Tangled to Hercules.

I probably wouldn't see it either way but I am not sure modern CGI could pull off 70 feet of human hair and make it look good. And I am not sure many actresses could make me believe the hair was actually attached to her head, especially with the associated weight.

I actually think they could pull it off (see: the mer-people effects in The Little Mermaid); However, the hair wouldn't need to be CGI for most scenes, though. I agree the wig wrangling might be an issue. (On the other hand, I've personally handwaved most realism issues in the original because her hair is *literally* magical.)

Disney’s Upfront Went Hard on Sports — With an Off-Key Manning Brothers Musical — but Hardly Mentioned ABC

The Mouse House highlighted its sports programming more than anything else during its annual presentation to ad buyers Tuesday in New York City, parading the Mannings and several other star athletes in front of ad buyers and even connecting scripted Disney content back to what happens on the court and field.

And as the industry leader in family programming, Disney also paired Ginnifer Goodwin with Auli?i Cravalho to shout out the upcoming theatrical releases of “Zootopia 2” and “Moana 2,” while also mentioning the massive Disney+ viewership achieved by the original films in both of those series.

Netflix, you’re on notice: “Disney has 164 million active users per month across our ad supported platforms, more than twice the number of Netflix ads. I don’t have a joke for that. I just wanted you to know we finally beat those motherfuckers up!”

Kmmel noted that Disney is touting its position as “the number one multi platform network. What does that mean? We don’t know. And we’re hoping you don’t even listen. I might not see you again. This could be it for you. So I want you to know I enjoy doing this, and I’ve grown very fond of you. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many of you over the last 23 years, and I also know that many of you are worried that AI may take your jobs, but I don’t think it will. I don’t believe a computer, even the most powerful computer in the world, will never be able to do what you do. And you know why? Because no computer wants to do what you do. Your jobs suck.

EARLY SUNDAY AM UPDATE: What we’re seeing tonight, doesn’t come from Disney or Paramount, rather box office sources, but it appears that $180M is within range for Disney’s Lilo & Stitch after an estimated $47M, -15% from Friday. Even if Lilo finally files in the high $170Ms, big deal. It’s an epic opening record for Memorial Day. Saturday’s haul, a record for Memorial Day weekend, buries that of Top Gun: Maverick‘s Saturday ($38M) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ($37.7M). 3-day looks to be $145M.

Not that I have stock in the company or anything, but I hope between Lilo & Stitch and Snow White, Disney learns the right lessons -- if they insist on doing these remakes. (There's no way Frozen isn't gonna get the live-action treatment at some point.)

They halted production on almost all live action remakes after Moana. If it was already in production or post production they are finishing it, but any other live action remakes that had been announced or were only in development have been shelved as far as I know. I'm not saying it will never happen, but it will be awhile before it does.

Wow! I refuse to see any Disney live action remake since others I’ve watched have all been disappointing, and it’s never been a favorite of mine(that’s Beauty and the Beast for me) but I feel sorry for those who love the original because that just shows they don’t understand the heart of the original and what made it resonate with people.

This article has a bit of analysis about the changes, including a quote from a producer (spoilers, obviously) : 'Why People Are Furious About the New ‘Lilo & Stitch’ '

Okay, I understand the reasoning behind the changes, but it's still a swerve from the original, and a very different emotional resolution. So I can see why fans of the original would be upset. I'm sure it's a good film (I haven't seen it yet), but it's not the same film. -- Not that everything needed to be an exact copy, but

Spoiler

the ending change is fairly significant.

-----

Speaking of changes for realism; if they do remake Tangled, I have a feeling that they'd change her whole personality. 😐

I need stand, but the discourse, as usual, is getting so toxic that some fans of the original are spoiling people that liked it and/or went to see it because there’s nothing else out for their kids to watch. JFC it’s getting dumber than the Snow White debacle.

If you don’t like the Disney remakes, then don’t watch them. Don’t even pirate them—why do you want to hate-watch something you know is going to piss you off anyway? Don't give it any energy and just leave the people that feel otherwise alive.

Lilo and Stitch has developed a cult like following amongst young kids and adults alike. My 9 year old daughter is obsessed! She has Stitch everything! I see cars all over town covered in Stitch stickers, etc. I could care less. He’s a cute little critter and the first movie I think I’ve seen once. Maybe not even in its entirety. My daughter loved the remake and I thought it was cute and an appropriate length. That’s all I ask for out of any children’s movie. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not but I’m not a big movie watcher anyways.

I didn't see it that way. When they show the postcards I thought Nani was able to make her dreams come true and take care of her sister. Now that she didn't have to worry about losing custody of her sister and their relationship much better by the end of the movie and with Stitch and David.

I hadn’t seen that and it is interesting. It’s not a bad idea and it could have worked, but judging by the online reaction I am seeing, they made one really big mistake by

having Nani move to California to study marine biology as if she couldn’t pursue her dream in Hawaii. Plus Nani, who is native Hawaiian, would have more educational and financial resources available to her in Hawaii than she would in Cali.

There was a middle ground that takes some responsibility off of Nani without completely undermining the entire message of the original.
