Cupid Stunt July 28, 2019 Share July 28, 2019 We had jpagan's recommended NYT chicken last night, with red potato salad and a marinated tomato salad. We cooked it on the grill (in a parchment-lined foil pan) which gave it a nice smoky flavor. -- Delicious! My parents are still in town; Dad had his appointments cancelled due to a brown out at the VA, and had to be rescheduled for this week. Dad supervised the window replacement, and talked to our insurance agent. Mom went a little haywire and picked up four cases of canning jars at the flea market with two bushels of peaches and cherries. She and Dad have been possessing fruit all week. My freezer is full of sliced fruit for pies, and the pantry is packed with canned fruit and jam. There's a stack of full cases in front hall full of canned fruit to take back to Lone Pine this Thursday. She's picking up more fruit to take back for more canning. Love your thrift market find, jpagan! 10 Link to comment

Roger Ebert on the media’s coverage of mass shootings -- Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. “Wouldn’t you say,” she asked, “that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?” No, I said, I wouldn’t say that. “But what about ‘Basketball Diaries’?” she asked. “Doesn’t that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?” The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it’s unlikely the Columbine killers saw it. The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.” In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. jewel21 July 31, 2019 Share July 31, 2019 I was leaving work today and this big mass of leaves came crashing down onto the driveway and I heard this scream. It was a squirrel nest and the mama squirrel screamed because two of her babies landed on the driveway. I only saw one at first and it was still moving but it was really young, its eyes hadn't opened yet and its tail was hairless. I went to tell my manager thinking I could bring it to the animal hospital but she said it was nature and she was sure it was dead. By that point it was very still but once in awhile I would see it move slightly. She said she thought it was rigor mortis and nudged it with a branch. She told me to leave it and see what the mother would do. As I was backing up, I saw the second baby which wasn't moving. I'm so sad, ya'll. Would rigor mortis set in after a minute or two?
