Peanuts: The Charlie Brown And Snoopy Thread

I have a bit of a difficult time watching the new specials because the voices from the 60s specials were just so perfect, especially Charlie Brown, Linus, and Lucy. The original Linus’ brother succeeded him in the role in the early 70s and they sounded very similar. But I remember when Peter Robbins aged out of the role, and the new Charlie Brown in “Snoopy Comes Home” sounded nothing like him.

I also really liked the original voice of Marcie in the 70s. The actor (it was a boy) had this great, distinctive, scratchy voice that none of his successors have even come close to.

FYI:

MeTV will be airing two classic Charlie Brown movies this Sunday and next Sunday:

  • A Boy Ñamed Charlie Brown (11/20 at 8:00 PM EST)
  • Snoopy Come Home (11/27 at 8:00 PM EST)

Watching A Boy Named Charlie Brown right now. Ah, poor Peter Robbins.

This movie is another example of why I hate Linus. He lends Charlie Brown his stupid blanket, then goes nuts and blames him when he thinks it’s lost. Values that damn blanket more than his own friend.

Although…him pointing out that the world didn’t end when he lost the spelling bee was a nice moment.

Lucy making a slideshow of Charlie Brown’s faults was a new level of torture for her.

Forget about Linus and his insecurities. The absolute WORST were the girls, led by Lucy-Violet, Patty, and Freida. A bunch of bullies that took me back to my own days of being bullied. I’ve always hated Lucy. And could and still don’t understand  why Charlie would give her the time of day.

And couldn’t Schultz have given Charlie at least ONE victory? This is the first time I’ve seen this and I hated it. The only time Charlie won was that movie where he was invisible and was FINALLY able to get one over on Lucy and kick the football.

Word about those bitches, @GHScorpiosRule. The best part in that movie was after he won the first spelling bee, he walked right up to them and rubbed it in their faces, “You thought I couldn’t win but I DID!” At least he had that.

While it sucks that he didn’t win the ultimate championship, the fact that Charlie Brown even made it that far was fantastic. He’s not the only contestant that lost because of a stupid word and he won’t be the last. Still, Schultz could’ve thrown him a bone…

Which is why I’ll always love “It’s Magic, Charlie Brown” for finally letting him kick that ball. And even when he got turned back from being invisible and thus fell for the trick again, he and Snoopy still got the last laugh:

Not a bad day for good old Charlie Brown…

True, but Lucy and even the others tried to take credit for it.

HELL. I WAS Charlie Brown as a kid.

Yup, thank you!

So was I. Which is why I tend to be defensive of the poor kid for everything. Yes, Linus’ jerkiness and innocent insensitivity is tame compared to Lucy’s malice, but it’s hard not to side-eye Linus when he hardly ever stuck up for his supposed best friend. I’d go on more about why I think Charlie Brown deserved a better friend, but it would be a long rant.

Tomorrow is Snoopy Come Home on MeTV and. “It Changes” destroys me every damn time.

Happy 100th birthday, Charles Schultz!

Snoopy Come Home just kills me. Every time.

It’d be so much easier if I could hate Lila, but she didn’t do anything wrong. She was a sick girl in the hospital, never would have given up Snoopy if her building’s stupid landlord hadn't changed the rules and forbade dogs. That whole backstory was repeated in Snoopy’s Reunion, and dammit, can you imagine how awful that would be for a kid? To have to give up your puppy just because of some dumb rule?

So I can’t blame her for wanting Snoopy back after he comes sees her at the hospital.  But damn if there was one thing that could finally break Charlie Brown after all the other humiliations and disappointments he’s had to endure, it’s losing Snoopy. And for all the times Snoopy took him for granted, you could tell it was killing him.

Yeah, it does work out in the end for Charlie Brown and Snoopy, not so much for poor Lila. I mean she still has her cat, but still.

I was 😭😭😭😭😭 but loved the buddy song and again 😭😭😭 during the hellos and goodbyes song Charlie sang.

Lucy and the other girls can miss me with their crocodile tears.

Wish it had ended with Charlie and Snoopy hugging, though.

I just saw this one for the first time tonight. I got Emily/When She Loved Me/Toy Story 2 vibes from the song after Snoopy left to go back to Lila :(

Linus called the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm and they said Lila's family had bought and returned Snoopy in August and Charlie Brown's family bought him in August.

No. Lila got him in August and the family returned him in October. That’s when Charlie got him.

This.

Linus said a bunch of insensitive things in this show—making Charlie Brown feel bad about throwing a stupid rock back into the ocean, saying that maybe Snoopy left because Charlie Brown was “boring”—but calling Snoopy a “used dog” had to be the worst. We all know that lots of pets end in shelters and have to be rehomed because their owners can’t care for them anymore, so Linus can take several seats.

”It Changes” is so powerful because it accurately depicts all the stages of grief. Charlie Brown staring at the empty doghouse, at photos of Snoopy, getting up in the middle of the night to eat cereal only to push it away because he can’t eat, then going back to bed and still unable to sleep…😭😭😭😭😭😭

I really loved the Dick Cavett show interview clips with Shultz during the commercials. He was quite handsome. Shultz, that is.

And I have to wonder--he said he named the strip Charlie Brown after a good friend of his. What did the real life Charlie Brown think of being depicted as a loser/being bullied, and hardly ever winning or being happy?

I mean, even in the Christmas Special (the original), everyone, especially that TWAT, Lucy, is haranguing Charlie; calling him a loser for choosing that tiny Tree. And it's only after Linus, with his blanket and Snoopy decorating it, when it changes to a pretty little tree with full branches, that they all wish him a Merry Christmas.

UGH. Know what? I'll take Jerk Santa Clause from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, than this lot.

Two exceptions: Peppermint Patty and Marcy were the only ones who were decent to Charlie. While Patty was pushy at Thanksgiving, she wasn't mean.

Though her apology for her rotten behavior left a lot to be desired. Not to mention how she treated him in It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown.

Still, she was the only character in Snoopy Come Home that tried to cheer up Charlie Brown when Snoopy took off without explanation. Everyone else just told him to get over it (Lucy) or was just depressed him more (Linus). Inviting him to the carnival was a kind gesture, even though it wound up to be another way for the universe to crap all over him as usual (losing the games, getting sick on the rides, etc).

I really do miss Sparky…

The jazzy 'Charlie Brown Christmas' soundtrack swings on after 57 years

Quote

The soundtrack has sold more than five million copies. Its nostalgia-fueled popularity has only grown, getting a crucial boost in 1998 when Starbucks began selling it in stores, and fed steadily by new products. The latest, a box set of outtakes from Guaraldi's recording sessions, was released this year...

During the 1960s, jazz was closer to the mainstream and more likely to be played alongside pop music, he said.

The music Guaraldi created for the soundtrack is ambiguous and more complex than most holiday music, Sloan said. Tied to warm feelings for illustrator Charles M. Schulz's classic comic page characters, time has made it traditional holiday music...

Guaraldi never had the chance to see his music age into standards. He died of a heart attack in 1976, only 47 years old.

"He's the best-known jazz musician whose name you don't know, because the music from the Christmas special has become so ubiquitous," Bang said.

Watched Charlie Brown Christmas last night and Linus’ insensitive response to Charlie Brown’s holiday depression really has not aged well. Lots of people get sad around the holidays, you know-nothing-know-it-all!!!

True. Oh, well, at least he gave his crappy opinion for free, Lucy charged 5 cents for hers!

My friend and I watched It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown on AppleTV, and Marcie going Amelia Bedelia messing up the eggs was hilarious. My friend thought Peppermint Patty was the one at fault for not explaining how to cook the eggs properly, but in fairness, Marcie has seen Easter eggs, so anyone with a lick of common sense could figure that they have to be cooked whole and not broken! I know she’s just a kid, come on, she’s usually one of the smarter characters on the show!

And as much as I admire Lucy’s subtle fuck-you to Lucy by giving her an egg, he should have skipped her. That way there would have been one left for Charlie Brown!

Well, one does need to bear in mind the context of the times, when our understanding of mental health was not as advanced as today, so I don't dismiss the show for that.

Besides, I watch it primarily for Linus's recitation of Luke 2:8-14.

I can't help but wonder how people would react to these specials if they were airing for the first time today.  Between the Valentine's and Halloween specials, I can't believe how rude those kids are to Charlie Brown.  I know it's just a cartoon, but Lucy and the other girls ticked me off when the valentines were handed out, and then to give him a used valentine the following day because they felt guilty. Everyone treated him so horribly compared to how he treated them; he was nothing but nice to everyone.

I don’t even remember the Valentine specials, but yes the school popularity contest of Valentines is pretty terrible. In many ways the kids were realistic mids that way. Yikes.

yeah, modern eyes object to them not being diverse enough, although to this day large parts of the country aren’t very diverse. I think they mean well and will hold up in the end.

Anyone watch Welcome Home, Franklin? I did, and I loved it! It's high time Franklin got his dues. I loved how he found almost all the gang off-putting EXCEPT for Charlie Brown. And yes, he finally got to sit next to everyone else at the pizza place.
