S02.E16: Hot Tub Crime Machine

A lot of the stuff that Elsbeth seemed to have in the totes appear to be callbacks to earlier episodes. Opera glasses, the toy that expands and contracts, the Statue of Liberty headpiece. I am surprised that Elsbeth wasn't carrying Gonzo in one of her tote bags.

That would be a pretty nice racket to take all the things that you force people to give away, especially if you know a lot about antiques and your clients don't.

It seems risky to carry around that Mother's Day card everywhere. Besides the face that it would obviously be dog-eared by now, it would be too easy to lose. I hope she has a scan of it.

Yes. But, OTOH, there’s a lesson to be learned from that example of having the “Mothrs” Day card with you as a reminder of that pure love of a young child, instead of putting it away out of sight (like in a Self-Storage container).

I wonder what the real declutter guru, Marie Kondo, thought of the episode, considering “After the birth of her third child, Kondo's rigorous attitude towards tidying her home relaxed in order to make room for more personal priorities at this stage of her life”(wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Kondo).

Agreed.  But she could also figure out a way to display it so she could see it every day and enjoy it.

At first my thought was... what an incredibly complicated way to commit murder.  Why do it that way?  And then we learn that she had tried so many other times and it was the incredibly complicated one that finally succeeded  LOL.

Dude did not deserve to die, but Axel is a textbook example you hear about of a person who should not be in an open relationship. He broke all the rules and it was clear he wanted Taylor as a wife approved person to cheat on the marriage.  He seemed way more into Taylor than he did Freya. But then again, Freya seemed to apply rules of decluttering to everything not just of things.

Did we already know Det. Edwards was in a throuple?  I like that once again she was on a case that relied on newer tech it is her happy place.

It was nice to see that Elsbeth basically use her bags as her walking museum.  I actually could remember some of the cases where we first saw some of the objects.

Elsbeth misses Kaya but it doesn't seem like Kaya missses Elsbeth. That is sad.

I liked Elsbeth telling her kid that his issues with his boyfriend were not about her.

I like stuff. I have a lot of stuff. I don't carry all of it with me, though.

I don't think we knew before that Det Edwards is in a throuple. I like that they are giving her some characterization, and it's not just "uptight detective who finds Elsbeth annoying".

I have a feeling there is more to this than meets the eye. Kaya is very close to Elsbeth. She wouldn't ghost her. I think she's working on something that she needs to keep away from Elsbeth. The only thing that comes to mind is the judge.

You can't diagnose fictional characters on the internet and all that, but I'm AuDHD and Elsbeth and I share a significant number of traits. Her description of how she needs to have all her things to think and her stress at being without them feels very spectrum-y. I'm glad they gave the totes a real purpose for character development so it's not just a visual gag.

I don't think we know that Det Edwards is in a throuple, per se. I think she said she was poly, which can mean a number of things. I've always thought throuple looked like the hardest variant!

Was I the only one distracted by Mary Louise Parker 's (new?) face?

I don't like to spend a lot time thinking about people's looks, but it struck me that she looks like several other women I've seen on screen lately --  plastic surgery gives so many women the same cheeks / mouth / nose. Almost a Joker smile.

Freya was a lot. I agree that a normal person would have found a better way to either work things out with the female partner or let her go and find someone who just wanted a relationship with her

Interesting case and episode in general. Cases like these make clear the value Élsbeth brings to the department because the cops were too ready to believe it was an accident and she made them dig deeper

Elsbeth’s son seems like an overly anxious or neurotic person

at the end of the episode Elsbeth I thoght I saw that she had a call with Angus. I must have dreamt that because no one here has mentioned it. I wonder what else I dreamt ...

I didn't think it was that big a deal, since by the end of the episode they were just letting us know that everybody's relationships were in a good place, Teddy, Kaya, and Elsbeth, maybe even Wagner's by communicating with his wife and talking to his kids (is this the first time the kids have been mentioned?).

Taylor was younger and likely sexier in his eyes.  It probably helped that she wasn't constantly bugging him to get rid of stuff, like a parent nagging a kid (although I suppose that's what he had signed up for.)  On the other hand, we don't know if Axel (or Taylor) was bringing any money into the household.  If not, it was pretty bad for them to be spending so much time together while leeching off of Freya (although certainly not an excuse for murder.)

The thing is, Freya wasn't jealous that Axel preferred Taylor to herself.  She was jealous of the time Taylor was spending with Axel, because she fell in lust/love with Taylor. She didn't want to let Taylor go; she wanted Axel out of the picture and Taylor all to herself.

Which is a nice switch for the way these types of triangles usually play out, with both women wanting the man.

No! I kept looking at her wondering if that was Mary Louise Parker.(I hadn't read the credits.) She looked jjuuuuusst enough like her to make me wonder, but I wasn't sure it was her until I read this board today.  I also agree with the poster below that some plastic surgeon keeps giving actresses the same face. I know aging is hard, but I though Mary Louise Parker was gorgeous before.

I liked the Chief's apology to the detective.

That's the perfect way to put it -- a Joker smile. I know exactly what you mean.
