S21.E09: Hit the Floor

Recommended Posts

I know that it wasn't her fault and I know she was under a large amount of stress but dear GOD, Teddy was a complete and total c*** this episode I found myself at times wishing for her to fall down an elevator shaft. From the condescending way she was to Ben to how she chewed out Simone and Jules ESPECIALLY when Simone DID raise concerns being on the shooter's case and she overrode him. She was so FUCKING insufferable. It's only gonna get worse once she finds out that Owen nearly kissed someone else.

I'm amazed that Teddy and Owen managed to last THIS long. Usually marriages on Grey's last 2 to 3 years at max. The only examples that DIDN'T seem to be Miranda and Ben (who are solid and probably never gonna be split up), Meredith and Derek (who lasted 6 years and probably wouldn't have broken up if Patrick Dempsey didn't leave and Richard and Catherine (can't see them splitting up either).

In fairness, Ben created a huge mess in the parking lot and ignored her direct orders about closing the hospital to trauma.  It would be hard to get past that without reminding him of his actual place at the hospital.

Ben seems to think he should have more authority than he does. If he didn't keep restarting his career he probably would have it.

I expected more after that cliffhanger, but this was dull. I’m sick of Teddy and Owen playing cheaters hot potato. How long do they have to show disinterest and disdain for each other before the writers put them and the audience out of our misery? It’s been literal years.

I also hope this Jules/Yasuda thing is over soon. I get why she’s upset (though letting Simone take the heat in the OR was nasty) but she and Yasuda were only just beginning. Having Jules act like she just lost her great big love is a bit much.

But I am interested in Lucas’ potential ptsd storyline, if only because they might reveal which of Derek’s sisters is his mother.

Exactly.  I'm sure it's hard to be a resident at his age and after his multiple job changes, but Teddy was right about how a resident shouldn't be creating emergency protocols and none of that should be his focus.  Of course, in a real hospital, they would have an emergency team or committee in place to deal with this, instead of the Chief of Surgery, and a random assortment of surgical residents and attendings.

I also forgot that in the timeline of the show, Yasuda just left the same day as this episode takes place.  They really need to think about these three or so month breaks they take between episodes.

I felt like I needed a recap prior to the episode airing because outside of the robbery, I couldn't remember anything else about the winter finale.  It also felt strange that they were talking about 100+ degree temperatures in the middle of March; I'm honestly surprised that they didn't do some sort of timejump where Jo was on bedrest and a brief summary of what happened following the robbery.

I am glad that the cliffhanger ended quickly and the hospital was the main setting of the episode.  I'm also glad that they told us that Adams wasn't in any danger early in the episode and that they showed the scene of Amelia being told that Adams was okay.  Based on his panic attack, I'm wondering if he will have some sort of PTSD, causing his parents or some other family member to make an appearance.

Jo, pregnant with twins, 18 mm cervix and cervical cerclage, will need a couple of days off work?

Come on show. She would be on bed rest after that (at least in my country)

Yes, I was assuming bedrest, too! Is she just going to go back to work as normal? If so, I predict another pregnancy crisis any day now...

I also was expecting one twin to have passed, so I was wrong about that.

Snooze of an episode as it seemed like they had gotten bored of all of the plot setups and so resolved them as quickly as possible.

I am not an pregnancy expert but I don't think an at risk pregnant woman would return to a job that is physically as demanding as being an OB/GYN resident. Even if complete bed rest wasn't necessary you couldn't safely have that level of physical exertion which is significantly higher than someone working at a desk or even a physician with an office practice.

Exactly.  I had no idea who the girl with no heartbeat was, I didn't know who the woman with Owen was, as far as I know Mika left months ago.  These long breaks are not good for the show.  Maybe it worked back when it was the hottest thing on TV but I'm not invested enough any longer to keep all that at the forefront of my brain.

Long breaks for serialized dramas like Gray don't work

It is one of the reasons why most of the shows I watch that have long plot lines I stream and typically wait until the last episode drops to start watching.

This show was egregious in terms of the length of the plot lines that were left hanging as I had no memory of anything. I stream on Hulu so I fast forwarded a bit of the prior episode to give some sense of who these people were but I had zilch emotional stake in what occurred

I am also disappointed that the show doesn't seem to have any surprises as there no longer seem to be any bad outcomes - the heart girl lived and wasn't paralyzed; the residents weren't injured; Jo didn't actually go into labor and lose the babies.

I had completely forgotten storylines and was not motivated to rewatch the previous episode to figure it out. It definitely impacted my ability to understand what the issue was with Amelia and surgeon dude whose name Im forgetting.

* editing to add Winston--that's his name
