The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (2025)

So happy for Only Murders finally winning! Sad that Marty couldn't be there to celebrate the wins due to COVID but hopefully he was watching and able to celebrate at home.

Also thrilled that The Bear went home empty-handed because it is not a comedy, not even a dark one, and should not be in that category due to a technicality (running time). Content of what is in that half hour should be the determining factor for category placement, not some arbitrary rule.

Maybe it is because I lost my Mom last year, but that In Memoriam hit me hard. So many amazing performers and people over the last year. Yes, I cried, and made a list in my head of movies to watch again and remember these wonderful actors. First on the list, Mr. Mom.

Surprised they didn't send thoughts and prayers to Pope Francis.  Could be a real Conclave soon.

They did, earlier, when they introduced their movie as one of the ensemble nominees.

Specifically, it was Isabella Rosselini who doled out the good wishes.

That's why it's in comedy everywhere? They need to fix it, because it's ridiculous it's not comedy.

So happy for Murders in Building, Selena shocked because they never win was funny. They've deserved it so many times.

Timothy was surprised too.

Kieran was predictable and so was his lack of speech.

It is usually up to the producers of the show and, because it is a half hour, it fits into the comedy slot pretty easily. Less competitive and better shot of winning against true comedy shows than a prestige drama like Shogun. Apparently there are no content requirements for the categories.

I remember a few years ago when the producers of The Martian submitted it in the Comedy categories of the Golden Globes because they knew they didn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning in the Drama category. They were right and won big, with multiple jokes being made throughout the night about the "hilarious" Matt Damon movie.

At least they could find a few funny moments to use for clips in The Martian as opposed to The Bear. But I wouldn't say The Martian was a knee slapper by any means.

Well, we now know where the criteria significantly needs to be changed for the future years.

Critically speaking, and if I’m being objective enough, Hacks Season 3 was vastly superior to OMITB Season 4, but I’m still really happy that OMITB is getting the flowers they deserved for awhile now. Plus Hacks did clean up at the Emmy’s. And Martin Short should have already been on his three-peat streak by now, but I’m glad his fellow actors finally recognized a truly great comedic performance.

I thought that Wicked was going to win Ensemble. Not so much because it’s a serious Oscar contender for BP, but because it was a great ensemble. SAG has long awarded the cast vs BP winners in the past (Black Panther, Hidden Figures, etc.) But at this point, it looks like this has cleared the way for Anora next week.

I know there’s been much talk about the fall from grace of Karla Gascon and Emilia Perez, but what about The Brutalist and its AI scandal?! It only has one nomination last night, but I thought Adrien would easily win it.

Shoutout to the mini-features and montages of the actors in horror films, L&O, and soap operas. I’ve always advocated for more stuff like this, so the show is not all just about the hoity-toity, artsy, awards contenders only. Movies and TV shows are mostly fun, and they should be celebrated that way. I would think most of the actors also appreciated the callback to their earlier works.

I voted for Conclave, Ralph Fiennes, Demi Moore, Yura Borisov, and Zoe Saldaña (regardless of her film's issues, I genuinely thought she was fantastic) in the film categories and Shōgun, Hiroyuku Sanada, Anna Sawai, Hacks, Adam Brody, Jean Smart, Richard Gadd, and Jessica Gunning in the TV categories.  That's better than a 60% success rate, so I'm generally thrilled with the winners.

However, Timothée Chalamet proved to be exactly the entitled, arrogant douchebag I always knew he was.  Even Edward Norton, who can be difficult himself, looked dumbfounded at the end of that self-encomium and could barely clap twice.  Because SAG is SAG, I thought Thirsty Timmy would win this one, but I still think Adrien Brody will win Sunday.  We'll see.  He should be glad Oscar voting already ended, though, I'll tell you that.

On the other hand, I could not be happier for Demi Moore.  The wisdom that comes from life experience made her performance incredible and her gratitude and passion in her speeches sincere and palpable.

I didn't like the speech Chalamet gave either. It was very arrogant and pretentious.

I’ve followed Timmy for years, and have always liked him, but I have to agree. I’ve found him increasingly annoying during this whole press tour/award campaign for ACU. His thirst for the Oscar I think would make even Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio cringe. I know it was a comedy bit, but his complaining in his SNL monologue about losing awards was off-putting to me. This speech was even worse. If Oscar voting was still going on, I do wonder how that speech would have played to many voters - if it wouldn’t have overshadowed the win. And, why did he look so annoyed at the end of the night? At the end of Ralph Fiennes’ speech, they showed a shot of the ACU cast and Timmy looked liked he was so over it. I know the ACU cast lost the ensemble award, but the rest of them didn’t look so dejected. If I hadn’t known he won best leading actor, I would have thought he had lost. I am praying anyone but him wins at the Oscars because if he becomes the youngest Best Actor Oscar winner, his arrogance might go off the charts.

Good choices there @NUguy514! Now I’m getting even more interested by Conclave, as Kristen Bell described it as Gossip Girl of the Vatican. Lol.

You think there’s chances of an upset come Oscar night? Demi is probably leading all of the odds right now, but Mikey surprised with a BAFTA win. Anora may clean up a lot of the big awards this Sunday, seeing they’ve won PGA and DGA. But I remember you saying last year that when Poor Things won makeup, you know it was going to be Emma Stone. I think The Substance has a great chance at makeup, so, we’ll see.

I love how Selena is getting more comfortable in her own comedic chops. She didn’t miss a beat in her speech, beginning with “we never win, this is so weird…” to “Marty and Steve aren’t here, because…they don’t care.” to “thank you to Marty and Steve..for helping raise me.” She’s definitely absorbing Steve and Marty’s skills!

I thought Kristin Bell did a great job hosting. I especially enjoyed "Do You Want to Be an Actor?" with the actors in the audience being shown seeing their younger selves on the big screen. The reactions seemed spontaneous. I don't think they knew in advance who was going to be highlighted. Nicely done.

To me, the most hilarious moment of the evening was right at the beginning when Jessica Williams attempted to do the "I'm <insert actor's name here> and I'm an actor" thing, only to be completely upstaged by Harrison Ford. She knew it was coming, too, which only made it funnier.

Thank you, Jane Fonda. ❤️

Edited to add: I also loved the opening (pre-recorded) Hacks sketch, especially since Jean couldn't attend the ceremony.

I think there's a chance Mikey Madison or Fernanda Torres (whose movie I just saw yesterday) could upset Demi Moore, but I still think Demi has a slight edge.  And I did say the makeup win for Poor Things telegraphed Emma Stone's win last year!!  That certainly could be the case this year with The Substance and Demi, but the bonkers thing that I think might happen is Coralie Fargeat winning Best Director.  I think it's going to be either Fargeat or Sean Baker (and I really hope it's not Brady Corbet, who's running neck and neck with Thirsty Timmy for most entitled douchebag of this year's awards season).  It would be so wild if Fargeat won.

Comment: Finally, a very well done “In Memoriam” section at Sunday’s SAG Awards, with the screen devoted entirely to pictures of the departed. This is how they should always be done. One other impression is that it’s nice to see that The Bear is no longer being rewarded for pretending that it’s a comedy. Perhaps they should enter some of these shows in the Documentary or Animated categories for better chances of winning next time since there seems to be no criteria at all for selecting which category to enter. — D.P.

Matt Roush: Agreed about the In Memoriam segment, and a lesson to producers that booking a major talent to perform live during these tributes is an invitation to dissatisfaction because they’re a distraction at best and an active annoyance whenever the camera moves away from the faces of the departed to showcase a singer (or worse, dancers). I was surprisingly pleased by the entire SAG Awards production, from Kristen Bell‘s opening number and tone throughout to the deftly produced montage packages — I especially enjoyed the Law & Order clips — and a minimum of forced banter (though still too much) among presenters. And I appreciated the occasional upset, not just in Only Murders in the Building‘s and Martin Short‘s wins, but in the movie categories, making Sunday’s Oscar show more unpredictable than I would have expected, with no clear front-runner in several major categories.

Seriously. I hope this is the end of its “comedy” run. Not only did it take wins from actual comedy shows and performances, it also took away a nomination spot from other comedies. I would have loved to see Nobody Wants This or A Man On The Inside nominated instead of The Bear at the SAG awards.

And I say all of that while liking The Bear very much. I think Forks is one of the greatest episodes of all time and would watch it over and over.

4 | Was Kristen Bell’s “Do You Wanna Be an Actor?” musical opening to the SAG Awards incredibly charming? ▼ Was it conspicuous that the director didn’t cut to Zoe Saldana and the Emilia Pérez table when Karla Sofía Gascón’s name was read as a Lead Actress nominee? (Did they clap, or not?) If they had expanded the Law & Order bit to also include NCIS-verse guest stars, would everyone in that ballroom have raised their hand? And who else Googled “sag awards trophy weight” after the 11teenth comment by a winner? (Answer: 12 lbs.!)
