S05.E04: The Deal

bye bye Nash and his exquisite wardrobe

Clarence should pursue acting as a hobby lololol that was great.

Mr. Potts and Ivy finally set a date!!!! yay!

wasn't expecting to see mrs. parker. we've lost so many minor/secondary characters over the seasons...at this point i never really expect any of them to show up again so it's a surprise when they do. same with Solomon! solomon II, that is lol. we've got a whole league of solomons to meet now.

watching eliza this season certainly has been interesting. Things have definitely shifted. She just seems so weary this season; her spark is gone. Curious to see if she gets it back.

I CANNOT believe we got Nash back and then he's gone! Say it ain't so!

And where the eff is Fitzroy this season? He's such a great character.

I believe some of the issues with characters disappearing may have to do with the filming location.  The Duke left because he has young children and filming in Serbia took him away from his family for long stretches.  That may be the issue with other actors as well.

That can't be right. Sigh. I was spoiled about some stuff.

I don't know whether it's ill-fitting costumes but the actress playing Scarlet looks pregnant to me.

I thought so too, especially when she wears a coat.

Eliza looked sooooo encouraged that Ivy and Mr. Potts would be living with her.

By the way, IMdb shows Nash in two more episodes this season.

She looked "overjoyed'! lol!

That could have to do with her losing the Duke. I saw quite a bit last night. Nash and her do work well together.

I hope Nash isn't really gone, he is such a great character.  Last season I thought they were going to set up a triangle with William/Eliza/Nash but it didn't happen.  Then this season I thought that there was going to be an eventual triangle with Blake/Eliza/Nash, but she doesn't seem to even consider Nash a possibility.  Now he is leaving (at least for now).

Clarence is a decent supporting character, but I would rather have Nash, Fitzroy or Moses on a more regular basis.  There's been an overload of Clarence and Mr. Potts this season, and not much from Nash and Fitzroy.  I miss Moses, don't understand why he is gone since we never got an in-show explanation.  I'm assuming the actor had a conflict.

In the season finale of last season, he was found standing over a body and then he fled.  Turns out the body was one of his informants.  Eliza and Fitzroy try to figure out what is going on while looking for Nash.  They find Nash in an abandoned factory.  He tied up the real killer, who also happened to have killed Nash's brother some years before.

Nash is about to kill the man and get his revenge, but Eliza steps in front of the gun.  She doesn't want Nash to become a murderer.  She talks him out of it by reminding him that he is the only one who ever believed in her.  This touches him and he agrees.  But the killer escaped his bonds, he is about to attack Eliza, so Nash shoots him in the arm.

Nash isn't a murderer but he did kidnap the guy, so he goes to prison for kidnapping.  He loses his detective licence and the office closes, which is why Eliza was back in her father's old office.  The last scene of the episode was her admiring the newly painted sign that has her name on it.

I really like Nash, but I am glad they never went the romantic triangle route with him.  I really like that he and Eliza have both a professional relationship and a platonic friendship (of sorts), without any "will they or won't they" about it.

I think that it would have been interesting for Nash to stick around and be a non-romantic foil to Blake, should a Blake/Eliza relationship bloom.  For one, it would be unconventional for Nash and Eliza to maintain a friendship, being out in public as they often are together, in that era.  But also, Nash being a shady character adds another dimension.  If Blake is interested in Eliza, would have had to accept her friendship with Nash.

@blackwingyou always post such great, detailed recaps when we forget something! Thank you friend! And I agree that whikst Ckarence can be interesting, Mr. Posts is anything but. He really only serves as a plot point for morgue access IMO. He's not even interesting with Ivy and I wish she'd not marry him because Shea so much more dynamic than he is. Forzroy is very interesting in hiw hebhas grown since we first met him, and Moses was very mysterious and always got the job done. I miss him as well

Yes! It would be interesting to see this triangle with Nash as the platonic make friend.

Thanks!  To be honest, after this season's first episode, I too had mostly forgotten everything that happened, especially why Nash was in prison, so I went back and rewatched last season's finale!

Mr. Potts is incredibly annoying and overexposed.  Not sure why he and Ivy are together if as he says, they have been engaged for two years but she has no desire to actually set a date.  It was revealed in this episode that Ivy was afraid of leaving Lizzie alone.  Which I completely understand.  But really, over the course of two years and Ivy and Mr. Potts have never had this discussion where she explains why?

I get that he is the morgue guy so will need to be seen on the show, but can he be only the morgue guy?  I don't need to see him intruding upon Eliza's home life, bickering over who will wash dishes or cook.  And now he's going to be living there, probably forever.  Ugh.

This was my least favorite episode - mainly because there was no inspector Blake. I like Nash well enough  - but he doesn't carry the show for me.

I was wondering what happened to Moses? The actor who played him was great. I like Clarence but he- like Nash - can be a little too much sometimes.

Yeah. And where is Fitzroy? We saw Mrs. Parker - did she mention her son?

I like Ivy and figured she would draw out the engagement for years! if she could! She seems like she is only getting married because that is what a woman is expected to do. Will she have to quit SY after she is married?

Well, I'm glad that Nash is gone.  He's too smarmy for me.  I was pissed Eliza agreed to share her office.  At least she could have asked for rent and since she mentioned she couldn't afford a raise in her rent, I could have understood.  Eliza and Clarence are the only ones to be somewhat friends and Nash lies and uses them.  He redeemed himself slightly at the end, but I'm glad he's gone.  Of course, he'll be back.  Sigh.

Ivy is too strong a woman for Mr Potts.

I missed Blake.  I like his interactions with Eliza and that he recognizes Ivy's worth - whereas, I think Potts just sees her as a future housewife along with the duties assumed by that job back then.

I do have to give Potts a little credit, though, when he helped Eliza with the cooking and the dishwashing last week.  We'll see if he continues or expects Ivy to do it all.  He may only have helped Eliza because he was "teaching" her.

I don't think Potts can control Ivy, and especially not whilst they live under Eliza's roof.

I also wondered the whereabouts of Mrs. Parker's son, whom IIRC was gay, yes? He was lovely abd his mother was much more palatable in her recent predicament. I liked her. I dint think Moses will ever return bc IIRC the actor was busy with other things. That said, we do need more regular sightings of Fitzroy, Mrs. Parker and her son, and Blake. And less Potts and tempered amounts of Clarence.

I thought the same!  But I didn't want to comment.  I once was taken to task on another site for noting that an actor had gained weight during the hiatus between seasons.  I wasn't fat-shaming the actor, just pointed out how it's noticeable when the new season is supposed to pick up at the instant the prior one ended, similar to when an actor changes their hairstyle.  I was called insensitive because apparently the actor had a health condition which caused the weight gain. I had not known about that and again, I was just pointing out the continuity issue.

They've done a fairly good job of hiding the pregnancy, by having Scarlet seated or slightly turned.  To me, it is most noticeable in the scenes where she is shown walking along the street.  Those empire cut coats!

I don't miss the Duke, but I do miss some of the other characters such as Det. Fitzroy and Moses.  I was happy to see the return of Mrs. Parker.

Nobody with any sense would think that. The Eliza actress is quite slim and not overweight in the slightest but she looks pregnant (she has the gait and the way she touches her lower back sometimes) and I did read finally that she was pregnant during filming this season.

Too funny. I thought to myself -- if I didn't know better - I'd say that actress is pregnant!

Ha!

I guess I didn't know better!

Better gear up for when Season 6 starts and Blake's daughter is 18!  😁

OK, just kidding.  A little.  But that kid will age a year in real time, and there might be a month or so break in screen time.  And at that age, it's noticeable.

You mentioned hairstyles...  I'm the exact opposite on this.  I have almost always had medium to long hair, and I rarely wear it the same way 2 days in a row.  (Nothing fancy, just whether it's down, or pony tail, or messy bun, or headband, or whatever...)  It's weird to me when characters, especially those with long hair, never, ever change their hair style.  I remember many many years ago, Gates McFadden supposedly caused trouble on the Star Trek Next Generation set because she changed her hair all the time.  Yeah, one style is easier for production, especially if they use wigs, but not realistic to me.

Speaking of hair, with Ivy and her new job, who is doing Eliza's hair? Does Eliza do it herself?  If so, how???

So Nash is off the show but Mr.Potts gets to continue delighting us as a main character.  Who is the target audience for this show, seniors?

The "romance" between Mr.Potts and Ivy is not interesting to me to put it bluntly.

Um, yeah, the audience is most definitely seniors.  Who do you think Masterpiece Theater markets to?  Look at the advertising - Viking Cruises - those are cruises for "active" seniors, the 60+ crowd.

But I agree with you on the Ivy/Potts romance.  It's boring.  I'm glad Ivy is happy, but there's been too much Mr. Potts on my screen this season.

That made me laugh! But kind of true. The kid will be a young adult when they come back -- if they come back!

Will there be a season 6?
