Yes he did.  Might be an idle threat but glad to see most of the Republican House members didn't listen to Musk.  Speaker Johnson might pay the price though.  As much as I dislike him I'm afraid whoever replaces him if he is cast out will be even more of a Trumper.

Isn't it amazing how there seems to be a lot more turnover in speakers when the GOP is in charge than there are when the Democrats are in charge?

Do you think having Gaetz out of the picture might help a bit?  I know he wasn't the only one who went after Kevin McCarthy but he led the charge.

So be more like the Trumps of the world?

Edit: Upon further consideration, I think what you're saying is that name calling isn't helpful. And if our side want so win over more voters, we need to knock it off. But (and I don't like whataboutism) the right and Mr. Trump in particular, constantly characterize the left as evil and says things like this -

“They’re poisoning the blood of our country. That’s what they’ve done. They poison — mental institutions and prisons all over the world. Not just in South America. Not just the three or four countries that we think about. But all over the world they’re coming into our country — from Africa, from Asia, all over the world. They’re pouring into our country.” — Dec. 16, 2023, New Hampshire rally

Yes, my friend (genuine friend to me BTW), it's me remembering how "deplorables" backfired so badly.

Most people don't have the talent or the skill to get a college degree that is worth a damn in today's world. Or be a great singer or pro athlete. And most people don't like being made to feel stupid and "lesser". And those people *know* when they are being derided, condescended to and called "Karens" or "Billy Bob's/Bobbi Sue's". They react *badly* to being lectured by academics, the Huff Post or the Amanda Marcotte's or Noam Chomsky's and the great and good celebs of the world.

And even then, Hillary specifically said that some Trump supporters were deplorable. Some. Not all. I remember an interview where the interviewer was trying to bait Harris into saying that Trump supporters are stupid and she refused to do it.

And yet look at what playing nice got her. For all the complaining people do about how politics is so divisive nowadays, they sure don't seem to mind voting for those who continue to push that division.

But seriously, why does somebody like Hillary saying "deplorables" cost her voters, but Trump can call immigrants vermin and other GOP leaders can go on about how transgender people are "pedos and groomers" and Vance can mock "childless cat ladies" and that's okay? Again, why is the left always scolded for their tone and told not to call names when the right can do it and get away with it and get votes and win elections off it?

That's the part I will never understand. Aand that's why I'm tired of the "tone" argument.

My point was that - Hillary Clinton did call some Trump voters "deplorables", though the full context shows she was being more nuanced. But (nuance-shmuance) the word was used against her to great effect - and the result, as we know, was the disaster of Trump.

So we should change how we think?  That sounds a lot like dumbing down. I know I'm smarter than a lot of people and I'm proud of that. Just because our  collective IQ is declining doesn't mean mine needs to as well.

Agreed.  And more basically anyone who got huffy about Hilary using the word deplorable and decided she was talking about them was astronomically unlikely to have voted for her in the first place.

Smugness and quite bluntly here, arrogance by the intellectual elite* only worsens their trouble convincing ordinary people of possible merits.

Which is a problem when there are no votes to throw away.

*You don't need to be monied to be part of an elite. Pretending only "MAGA" thinks that way (as Amanda Marcotte did over on Salon not that long ago) is a foolish mistake and led to BREXIT and "both Trumps".

Good thing [general "we"] won't need "Karens/Chavs/White trash/hillbillies" for anything. Such as winning a referendum on the EU or electing a former FLOTUS, perhaps?

I don't call them names, usually. I don't like to call anyone a loser, for example. I'm also not educated. I dropped out of high school, and finished studying at home. I took a proficiency test, so that I could leave with some sort of diploma, before I was eighteen, when we lived in California. My mother was supposed to go to college, but she was shoved into a job at sixteen, because her family needed the money. Dad had some college, but he also needed to work, and was working from a young age to buy himself things that he needed, first with a paper route.

I wanted to go back to school, and I wish I had. Last month, I had a guy assume that I had money, lived in the city, and had a college degree. He told me that I should get to know "the other side" the farmers - who I happen to have been related to on both sides of the family. The people with no money. We've never had money. I was born a city girl, but I don't know why he assumed I had money, and lived in the city. We've been acquainted for years. I'm also not perfect, and have been taken in by some things, in the past.

I can relate to some of this, too. I've had MAGA assume the worst things about me, too, but most of them knew whatever they assumed wasn't true. Trump's rallies have reminded me of those in The Stand. Also, the same people who told protesters that they should get a job, were rioting on January 6th. Also opposing liberal protesters all over the country. They didn't mind their own business, and stay in their own lane. They are centering themselves in our bedrooms, our medical business, and our relationships. Also going after trans kids, and adults. Now we're being threatened, if we hide immigrants, too. they started lies about immigrants eating pets. It's been two months, and it's hardly mentioned now.

So much this!  On a bright note in this regard in Ottawa the woman who was the face of Ottawa Public Health during the Covid pandemic - and who dealt with an absolute crapload of grief from those who figured they were so much smarter than she was, grief that included death threats,  was recently appointed as the new CEO of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.  So sometimes good people doing a hard job get rewarded.

I'm still waiting though for the day people like Trump get their comeuppance.  Dammit, I want a comeuppance!

Our Amy Acton, and at first Dewine, too, got us through the first months of Covid, we were doing so well, and then DeWine caved to the conspiracy theorists, and MAGA. Amy Acton needed security (as did Fauci), because she was getting death threats. People were camping outside her home, scaring her children. Fauci still gets threats, and the extremist conspiracy theorists want him brought up on charges. It's too much.

While watching Washington Week in Review tonight, I learned from panelist Mark Leibovich that there are going to be a lot of media investigative reports into the White House staff's covering of Biden's cognitive (decline) issues throughout his entire term. I'm wondering how they'll have time to do this during the first year of Trump's "It's Gonna Be Wild" term.

MAGA loved him, until he worked with the Democrats. Those I know online, anyway. They don't want unity. I did see a post earlier, from someone who said that he was starting to regret his vote for trump. He didn't think they'd remove funding for children's cancer research.

I was on reddit at times, before the election, and anyone  who was concerned about polls, or didn't like certain things about Kamala's campaign, were called Russian bots, and downvoted. They were told to relax, she had this. She was going to win. I think in some cases, people assumed that she would win. A man from Ohio, an author who posts a lot about politics, was warning people to ignore all of that, and just vote.

Yes, we know you don't have to be monied to be part of an elite group.

But is it smugness to expect that people know and accept basic facts for what they are? Like I said before, one does not need to be a college-educated intellecutal elitist to know that, say, Hatians aren't out here eating cats and dogs, or transgender people aren't pedos and groomers, or vaccines don't have microchips in them that are monitoring every single thing you do, or climate change is a thing, or so on. I'm not college-educated, and I know all of this. Yes, there are people who are ignorant thorugh lack of proper education, but I think for far too many people nowadays, it's not that they can't learn or don't have the opportunity to learn, it's that they just flat out won't learn or don't want to learn. The former I can sympathize with, the latter, there's no excuse for that.

If wanting and expecting people to acknowledge basic facts for what they are makes them "smug" and "elitist" and "arrogant"...I honestly don't know what to say to that other than it's proof that our education system really is a failure.

Most people go by emotion, not intellect. They always will.

I consider myself a hard-boiled pragmatist because of some really horrible things no child and no teenager or young adult need go through. Because of my brain damage (and autism on top of it) I became well read after years of struggle to become even that - to protect myself - although it was informal - still without a formal degree now - and because of my ABI/autism i don't see the psychological masks people use - the mask of sanity is just the most well-known but there are others.

Because Democrats are idealists with principles and the right makes no claim to stand for any of that so they are free to say whatever they want without being called on it. If you don't stand for equality, fairness, justice and human rights you can basically call anyone anything you want without having anyone call you a hypocrite.

See above. Also the whole MAGA thing is centered around grievance so being nasty toward the people they hold responsible for their problems is as they see it, OK, consistent with their views, and also deserved.

Agreed about the education system but I've noticed in my lifetime a shift toward a defiant anti-intellectualism in our society. Intellectuals are seen as "out of touch" snobs who think they're better than the average Joe. People used to aspire to be educated, to think critically, to be decent people with manners who care about making society a better place. Being smart and knowing a lot was "cool". They looked at educated people as teachers and mentors that would help them become better people and someone to be admired.

Now it's the other way around. I think it has something to do with the shift toward individualism and the attendant belief that everyone is OK just the way they are without any need of any improvement. Suggesting that people might benefit from an education is seen as an insult by many out there now. They see it as if you're in effect telling them they're inferior and need improvement. It's ridiculous of course. Did we think our parents were insulting us by telling us we should get an education? Did we call them snobs because of it? No. We knew they had our best interests at heart. But somehow these people have been convinced that anyone with an advanced education or at least seems like they have one is putting them down and telling them they're inferior. And on top of that they've been convinced that what you're really doing is trying to convert them to becoming a liberal, as if a college education in anything but business is all about indoctrinating people into a political philosophy. At least that's what their mouthpieces have been telling them.  And they buy it.

Immediately after the election I was depressed. Took me about a month to fully come out of it. This thread has helped a lot.  And now I'm of the mind I'm just going to sit back and watch it burn. Because it will burn. And I feel horrible for those who are going to get burned (except the ones who voted for him, they can get scorched) but anyone with a brain knew Trump was going to be even worse this time around.  He isn't even in office yet and him and Musk are breaking plates just because. So my hope is we survive as best we can and hope once he is finally gone (death, end of term, I don't care) we can start to rebuild.

That's exactly how I feel - I felt drained even as I try to tune out the circus but it left me feeling very unmotivated. I've found that I don't really have the desire to discuss politics with anyone anymore. This year, I've come to realize that certain political beliefs and values, rather than just affiliations, do factor into my connections with others now, more than it did previously. I am grateful that this thread is still here, allowing me to share my occasional thoughts and to learn perspectives from others who are just looking for some peace. It has provided a soothing space away from the noise of other corners I frequent, who seem intent on arguing and/or doomscrolling.

The rise of anti intellectualism I believe started with reality TV.  A lot of it was and still is mindless drivel (no offense to anyone that watches it) and highlighted people acting dumb.  Then social media came along.  Now instead of someone's family telling someone their belief that God sends hurricanes to places of sin is stupid that belief gets likes and retweets and all that.  We have at least one House member who believes Jewish space lasers start wildfires.  Yes most of us laugh and dismiss her as an idiot but she keeps getting reelected.

So here we are with ignorance and just plain stupidity being rewarded and intellect and education being called out of touch and elitism.

Right, I’m angry with them. The ones who deliberately spread lies, and act like they believe them, too. The MAGA person I know and loathe the most, went to law school.  He’s got an education. He told a mutual friend that he did it to help people, but I truly think that he only did it, so that he would learn whatever legal loopholes would help him, in whatever he does.

Willful ignorance. Trumpers and before them Tea Party people seem to be proud that they ain't no book learnin' types. But then their leaders go to Ivy League schools that most American kids can only dream of going to and then act like they can barely string a coherent sentence together.

This is what bugs me when I hear over & over that it's the non-college educated who support Trump, et al. Please! I know too many people with advanced degrees who are Trumpers. For some reason, these magats, holding down very good jobs, are never mentioned.

Yeah, and I wonder why guys like Brock Turner, never received this kind of perp walk, and treatment.

re: education. Trump wants to make it even harder for kids to even get a regular education.

That would ruin the narrative that Trump is just one of the people. You know he is just like us.  There are still people that believe he worked hard and made his own fortune.

At the same time as they’re pointing out how much money he’s getting from billionaires, in donations, and saying that he was smart, when he avoided paying taxes.

This disgusts me. First of all what the hell’s with Eric Adam’s? He’s an imbecile.

Secondly this killer is being romanticized like the gangsters of the 1930’s

People sent him thousands of dollars to use at the jail commissary while he was in PA. The money was transferred with him. So thirdly how stupid are people? His family was able to hire top notch defense attorneys. He’s not being represented by a Public Defender in which case he’d be totally screwed and might not have money to buy candy bars and ramen or make phone calls. But you people don’t care about them most of which are probably in jail for committing petty crimes.

I will just say this. I have a close family member that has been in jail several times for what amounted to doing things because of bad judgment. Was a defense attorney hired. Yeah a couple of times but in the one instance that she had a public defender it was an an enormous mess that cost her four months of her life when she had two month old
