I am always reminded of the Gloria Steinem quote: “Though we have the courage to raise our daughters more like our sons, we've rarely had the courage to raise our sons like our daughters.”

I saw a college dean being interviewed about the numerous reported sexual assaults at his school. He said "I don't know what more we can do. We keep warning these girls about keeping themselves safe. We tell them to avoid going out at night, to walk in pairs and not to drink alcohol." The reporter then asked, "What do you tell the boys?" The dean looked at her like she had two heads and terminated the interview.*

*Okay, it was an episode of Law and Order but damn if it didn't pretty much sum up the reality of life in these United States.

As I said last week women are always asked why didn't you take a friend. Why didn't you wear something different.  Why did you have a drink.  Why is the question never why did that guy sexually assault someone?

Men don't know what it's like to have to ask someone to watch their drink while they go to the bathroom at a bar.  Men don't know what it's like to have their keys ready to use as a weapon as they walk to their car.

Look I know not all men are bad.  But when not enough good men speak up to condemn the bad men the bad men continue to get away with it.   We have at least two Supreme Court Justices credibly accused of sexual assault/harassment.  We have a former and now President elect found liable for a sexual assault.  How many of men in his previous administration and his current cabinet nominees have had sexual assault allegations against them?  In recent years the only politician I recall being made to leave because of a sexual misconduct allegation was Al Franken. A Democrat.

It's true.  You can find toys that are stereotypical for boys that are aimed at girls. But do they always have to be pink?  But you don't see toys stereotypical for girls aimed at boys. When my son was young Power Rangers were big. He had their actions figures.  They were just boy dolls right?  But of course they weren't marketed that way. Same with clothes.  Boy clothes have dinosaurs and trucks on them. Girls clothes have unicorns and rainbows.

It's not just kids' toys, either.  Anyone remember Bic pens for women?

Or this?

And while we're on the subject: there was a study showing women customers will be lied to much more frequently than men.  Even by women sales / service representatives.  This had me thinking of starting a company where men would be hired to just go with women to mitigate the deception.  I was going to call it PWP: People with Penises (mostly for the shock value of using penis in a company name; I do understand that not all people w/ penises are men.)

I can only speak for myself but I think that view of masculinity is unhealthy and in a lot of cases dangerous.  My son is 32 and when I was raising him I wanted him to show his feelings and be respectful of other people's feelings. I don't think that should be considered not masculine. I think that is being a decent human being.

I think we need to resurrect the concept of being a gentleman, updated for today's society. It's not necessary to tell boys they need to wear pink or dresses in order to channel their feminine sides (unless they want to), but teach them to think about others before themselves and treat them, especially women with courtesy and respect.

Even the word "gentleman" has become passé and probably laden with negative connotations. That's regrettable in my opinion. The word itself pretty much says what it means. Instead of encouraging them to be selfish, loutish brutes, men should be taught to display qualities such as politeness, respect, courtesy, and consideration for others. A gentleman is typically associated with good manners and a sense of honor in their interactions with others. These are the things I think we've lost in our society here in the U.S. We are sending men opposing messages that either they should be macho assholes or else they are "sissies". A gentleman is is a real man, not either extreme. And real men will wear pink and cry in public on occasion and not be averse to showing their feminine sides. Thankfully I know a couple of them in my own personal life, like my husband.

Daniel Sloss (from his 2019 HBO special; later it came to be seen as him referencing Russell Brand):

Quote

“Don’t make the same mistake that I did for years, which was just sitting back and being like, ‘Well, I’m not part of the problem, therefore I must be part of the solution’ because that’s just not how this fucking shit works.

“I believe and deep down I know that most men are good, of course, we are. But when one in 10 men are shit and the other nine do nothing, they might as well not fucking be there. Being good on the inside counts for absolutely fuck all. You have to actively do good and get involved.”

“Instead of having this hero complex and being like ‘I’m going to beat up a rapist’ – fucking prevent one, stop one. I know it can be done because I know how I fucking failed at it.

“Because if I’m being 100 per cent honest with myself, were there signs in my friend’s behaviour over the years towards women that I ignored? The answer is yes, and then he raped my friend, and that’s on me until the day I die.”

I can't believe how clueless even well intended men are about this subject. Like I have to explain to men why I don't like going to desolate areas at night or park my car in a deserted parking lot at night, walk on a deserted walking trail alone, etc. This is a nice area but these days there has been an increase in incidents against women, especially in the older age bracket.

I had to explain to a potential contractor why I don't want to live in my house while the ceiling is taken down and the attic is exposed and strange workmen are coming and going all the time for days on end. My husband is OK with it but when it happens there will be a lot of noise and men in and out of here, and this is a small house so I will have zero privacy and almost no room to live as furniture will be removed from the living area. I told my husband he can live here by himself if he wants (and I think that's a good idea for security reasons) but I'm taking up the insurance company's monetary allowance for staying in a hotel. But to the point, I'm just sick and tired of having to explain this stuff to men. My husband gets it but only after I explain it to him. At times like this I tell him it's not just me and if he doubts that just talk to 99% of the other women out there on this subject, LOL.

I hate shopping for a car.  Or even getting my car repaired. I always feel like I'm getting overcharged. Same with home repairs.  My late husband was a handyman so I know there is great flexibility in pricing for that.

The company I work for does a few types of services and when we hire someone new they have to watch a video that explains how to sell this one particular service. It's an older video but I feel like it would be the same today.  One of the segments is how to sell to the wife. It was very patronizing.

After my husband died he had a lot of equipment and bigger tools I wanted to sell. I either had to take the item to a public place and meet the buyer or have the buyer come to my house when my son was going to be there. I did not feel comfortable having men come to my house when I was going to be there alone.

But there's little being done to change this view, definitely NOT in the way we've been trying to change the role of women, highlighting women who went non-traditional routes over the past few decades.  Instead, for males, it's remained fairly static.  And as a "boy mom," I find this very disappointing.  So yes, young males ARE disadvantaged since they're limited in the definition of masculinity and that any move away from that definition results in bullying.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You probably were getting overcharged. My husband was a service advisor and later manager for years so he knows how much women get overcharged. Which is one reason he insists on coming with me when I take my car in for service. He doesn't let them get away with anything.

After a tree hit our house and we needed extensive repairs my husband volunteered to be the point of contact with the contractors because he knows how much I hate dealing with them. Unfortunately after having a condo. and a house built he hates dealing with them too so both of us are now agonizing at the prospect. But it's much worse when I deal with them. No matter what I say or how I say it it's not well received because I'm a woman. And it's even worse when you're a smart woman and nobody's fool - they hate you even more because they know they can't BS you. So I am sitting here biting my tongue most of the time. We were not happy with the first contractor we had. Many delays, BS stories that didn't make sense, etc. There's more, too much to go into. I finally talked with the foreman myself and didn't mince words with him. I was firm but respectful like my husband would be. Of course by the way he reacted like I knifed him or something I'm sure he thinks I'm a b-word. My husband says I shouldn't have talked to the contractor because of that. I can't win. I know I'm far from alone in feeling this way as a woman. I've talked with my female friends about this subject and we all feel the same way.

Also, to bring this back on topic, it doesn't help that most of those guys might as well just wear their MAGA hats as I can pretty much guess who they voted for!

This discussion reminds me of when our cable went out and the repairman came and started trying to sell me an upgrade before he was even in the front door. I told him I just wanted the repair, that half of our channels were now either for the vision impaired (with voice over descriptions) or in Spanish (The Simpsons are hilarious in Spanish). He proceeded to mansplain all these channels we could get with these upgrades and I calmly picked up the clicker and went through the channels he said we could get that we already had. As I was standing in the bedroom arguing with him, my husband pulled up to the house. You could see the relief wash over him as he thought "Great, now I can speak to a man and not this silly woman." Little did he know that he was about to encounter The Hammer, as we call my husband. He came in and said all the things that I had already said but a bit more forcefully. He shut the guy up and even weaseled a couple of remotes out of the guy that he swore they didn't make anymore. LOL.

Because the past few weeks haven't been horrible enough, now there's been a school shooting in my area with multiple deaths/injuries.  The shooter, apparently a student at the school, was reported to have killed him/herself.  When will America ever take meaningful action against gun violence?  Any politician posting "thoughts and prayers" can just go fuck themselves.  My heart breaks for the families.

I recently had a similar experience at the cable company when we went in to the Spectrum storefront to exchange our modem. My husband and I were both standing there but I was doing the talking because the account is in my name. Ultimately the guy treated us horribly because he was pissed off when we wouldn’t buy into the changed program he wanted to sell us. they subject you to this upsell attempt every time you go in.  He then proceeded to treat us like crap and give us wrong info about the modem. Even after I pointed out the serial number he was supposed to look for. He then had to finally go in the back and get the right piece of equipment even though he had insisted it didn’t exist. People like that are subjected to pressures from the company and then act out when they don’t get their way. It really was unpleasant.

This is such a shitty situation; so sorry you/your area is going thru this @Calvada

I'm going to repeat myself here: there will be meaningful action against gun violence only when meaningful campaign finance reform is enacted.  Until politicians can no longer take $$$ from the NRA or Smith & Wesson or Colt or other gun manufacturers &/or special interest  groups, these mass shootings will continue happening.

Getting money out of politics would help solve a lot of our problems. Citizens United was one of the worst if not the worst SCOTUS decision ever.

What is he doing with that pickle?

It's from The Simpsons episode "Lisa the Beauty Queen". An especially ugly caricature drawn of her at a fair has Lisa wracked with low self-esteem, so Homer decides to enter her in the Little Miss Springfield pageant. In order to afford entry, however, Homer is forced to sell winning ticket for a ride on the Duff blimp. When Marge reveals this information to Lisa, a somewhat regretful Homer is glumly "flying" the pickle as if it's a blimp, as shown in the picture.

Hope that clears it up.

When I worked at our local bookstore, a woman came in to try and return an item once. She didn't have a receipt with her or anything that would allow us to be able to return it, and my coworker and I, both women, explained to her what our store policy was about this stuff.

Of course, she decided to start arguing with us, and we kept trying to tell her that this was our store policy and so on.

So finally she leaves...anc comes back a short time later with her husband. Apparently she thought having her husband come in and throw his weight around would make us more amenable to giving her what she wanted.

It did not work.

(On the plus side, after they left, a customer nearby, who'd apparently overheard the exchange, actually came up to us and expressed their support for us sticking to our stance as we did, so there was that :).)

Yep. Like I said, make the politicians and the gun lobbyists who refuse to support gun control be held financially accountable for these tragedies and I guarantee they'll soon be singing a different tune.

(How sad is it that that would be what got them in line, and not, y'know, children dying in a mass shooting How much does one have to be lacking in any sort of moral compass to not care about children being murdered? I don't get how the hell one gets to that point in their lives.)

I'm so sorry to hear that news, @Calvada

I'm thinking all this nonsense is on the same level as the "lock her up" garbage he spewed when he ran against Hilary Clinton.  He has a very twisted idea of what being president actually means.  Despite the ruling by the Supreme Court he actually isn't a king - or god almighty as some of his supporters pretend to believe.  There is only so much he can actually do and deporting citizens of the US is not one of them.

Let me guess it will only be people of color.

He also wants to sue for that Des Moines newspaper poll that said Harris was up shortly before election day.  Said it was election interference.  This man can't help but be a whiny a baby about anything and everything.

Not that I want to see anyone deported but it would serve him right if he did send some deportees to some country and their economy ended up booming because of the influx of hard working people.

As long we (the American people) aren't hurt I hope everything Trump attempts to do fails spectacularly.

The US can't just deport people unilaterally, the country to which they're being deported has to accept them.  For home countries that won't take their deportees back, he reportedly has a list of other countries he'd ship them off to (countries to which they have zero connection, mind you).  Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas were said to be on that list (among a few others), and just a day or two after the report, those countries said to leave them the fuck out of this mess.  (But, you know, in more diplomatic terms, that they "oppose" the reported plan.)

(Trump had a deal with Guatemala in 2019, where they agreed to take some recent asylum seekers from other countries; people arrived at the U.S. border as required to seek asylum, and were shortly put on planes without knowing where they were going and sent to someplace they'd never been, didn't know anyone, etc.  Immigrants rights groups, including the ACLU, sued - a suit which is still languishing in federal court - but the practice only got put on pause because of the pandemic and of course Biden did not continue it.  So it seems Trump seeks to revive it, with different/additional countries.)

This was also discussed a few days ago.  Trump “understands.”  But he has vowed to end birthright citizenship for those in certain circumstances, maybe even revoking their citizenship, to test the interpretation of the Constitution.
Also he said in one interview that he will deport citizen minor children with their non citizen parents.

I went to Bermuda this past Summer and found it to be a delightful place. It has no very impoverished areas like a lot of small island nations do. It is still a part of the British Commonwealth so all of its citizens have the right to live and work in Great Britain, and why GB is the most popular place they tend to go. There are limited opportunities to make good money in Bermuda so many leave for GB and also the US.

BTW, Bermuda used to encourage people from the Caribbean to come live there because having no native population of its own at first, the British needed cheap labor to work in the shipyards and even teachers to teach in their schools. But I very much doubt that it would be willing or able to take on a large group of deportees today.

I don't think Trump knows the first or last thing about Bermuda and as usual he is FOS. As to sending the people he deports there, as Obama would have said, "Good luck with that", LOL.

As i mentioned way back in this thread, there are mothers who think that giving their sons girls toys and making their sons wear dresses when they are old enough to consent for themselves will teach them equality - and that their male peers will somehow only say mean things to them - instead of *hurting them* which is far more likely. "When you release forces, you can no longer control them" as the saying goes.

I lived in Bermuda for a year when I was 12.  The school system can be good but they are really strict, at least at my verrrry traditional girls’ school.  I’m not sure if Bermudians can work in the UK without a visa.  I know that Canadians (and we are part of the Commonwealth as well) can’t.

I think he spews things just to spew.  Imagine a military plane filled with folks being deported.  They would have to have a place to land the plane and offload the folks.  This would have to be planned in advance.  I can imagine some staffer on the phone "Hello, Bermuda?  We want to land a big plane and offload 300 people.  Maybe more than once.    Hello? Hello?"  Next up, Narnia, same thing.  Don't get me wrong.  It will be a cluster in the beginning as he and his people try all kinds of insane things and then there will be court orders, etc. more chaos, and he will find it to be hard.  BUT, don't count out the sheriffs to round up people.  They have almost unlimited power, most of them are associated with christian nationalists, and very Trump.https://www.amazon.com/Highest-Law-Land-Unchecked-Threatens/dp/0593471318

I don't even think this will be a "let me see your papers" kind of thing. I truly believe they are capable of just driving around and pulling people they think look like immigrants off the streets. I hope I'm wrong and even if Trump wouldn't fully commit to that the people he has around them would do it in a heartbeat. They are hellbent on the whitening of America.

Then what will they do to JD's wife and her parents?

Trump’s lies are accepted by the MSM as fact. He can have a “press conference” and throw out all kinds of BS and no one blinks. But the MSM will pay for what they did to me!

The CEO’s are now my friends! I can force any corporation to pony up millions if they don’t want to go to court! I’ll sue anyone or anything that interfered with my election!

And high food costs they’re not going down! The polio vaccine? I love it! He’s already backpedaling

The voters that he conned will they complain when bacon and eggs are too expensive for them? When the billionaires keep their tax cuts and his DOGE cuts Medicare, Medicaid, WICK, etc or when they really are successful in getting rid of the ACA

I really want them to get what they asked for (never mind the hairbrain ideas he promised them because he thinks he alone can rewrite the constitution) it’s stupid to say it but it’s not fair to the rest of us. We expect a president to do the right things no matter which side wins. But Trump broke it and those voters didn’t give a damn

This was basically a 50/50 election and to all the democrats who sat this one out I hope you’ll be happy with your new America

Children are getting shot in their schools, and CEOs are getting a special hotline to call, to report any perceived threats, in New York State. A second grader called the police, to report that school shooting, yesterday.

Children are killed in school and they shrug their shoulders. I mean what can you do.  A rich corporate CEO is killed and OMG the horror.  They need bodyguards now. We can't ever know their location. They  must be protected.

Yep they should get what they deserve but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

And the sad and maddening thing is if Kamala had won her polices would have benefitted us and the people who didn't vote for her.  She wasn't planning on fucking over her "enemies".  She wasn't going to threaten everyone to fall in line or else.

They will never own it. They will blame someone else.  Probably Kamala for not giving them what they wanted.

I remember always hearing JFK had the best and brightest working for him.  Trump has the dumbest and meanest.

Those very same people worked for LBJ. They couldn't win in Vietnam. The people of Indochina have paid the price for that under the SRV, the Lao PDR and the KR and Hun Sen for the past 50 years next year.
