My mom is in a rehab hospital and will be for a long time. We grew up just above the poverty line so not a lot saved…would you just get sent to a lower tier free hospital? I think about this a lot. What if you need rehab, lost a limb etc but have no money?  I wish long term care were free ( it’s not and quite expensive).

We also have a program called Medicaid for low income people, disabilities etc. You have to be 65 to get Medicare but there’s no age requirement for Medicaid.

No care is free in the US. If you need rehab or lost a limb and have no insurance, you will get minimal rehab, get discharged to wherever you live and given a wheelchair and an addiction to painkillers until you die from a pressure sore infection. I've seen the ambulance drop sick, struggling people off at the homeless shelter where I work. It isn't wheelchair accessible.

This is not to make light of your mom's needs. The US is medically awful.

I used to love Butterfingers but then I think they cheapened the chocolate and now they are not good. It makes me sad!

Used to work there!  The Italians who acquired Confections a few years ago actually went back to the real chocolate formulations on Crunch and Butterfinger.

Not at all! I am curious to hear from real folks because I hear various accounts from distant relatives that live in the US but they have $$$ and, in general, the world is different for folks who don’t have $$$. It’s sad and I’m sorry to hear that.

This is why I’ll probably get a job at Trader Joe’s when I retire for the free shirts and healthcare.

In the last 3 years I have had two major falls with big injuries. Because I live alone and couldn’t take care of myself, and needed rehab, I was sent to nursing home rehabs for about 2 months each time. I pay a lot for the top-line Medicare supplement, but they covered everything. I was luckily over 65 on Medicare each time. (Rehab PT was good, the places were otherwise awful and I felt bad for the long-term residents. …. I was there temporarily but at some point a nasty aide said that if I had money, I wouldn’t be there!)

I am glad you are doing better and got out of there.
