The show didn't drag this time in my eyes, but the contestants need to stop yelling(I am more a fan of the silent reactions on the floor where they make funny faces) but now they are just yelling for more screentime. In season 1 and 2 they didn't yell as much and when someone passed it felt more serious.

I don't recall any yelling, except for the time they prompted that lady it was her turn. But that's not my objection. My objection are these little exchanges between randos on the floor right before the duel starts:

"She's got this." "She's been studying, she knows this category." "This is going to be a tough one." WTF? First of all how the hell do these people even know any of the other contestants and why on earth would we care what they think about the matchup? Imagine any other gameshow cutting to a couple of audience members going "Oh, I hope so-and-so wins" "I think so-and-so has this in the bag!"

According to one of the contestants, there is a great deal of discussion and strategizing among the contestants during the down time between filming episodes. I’m not that interested in the chit chat either, but I guess the producers think it adds something to the duels.

"Real Housewives" is a nightmare category for me. I do not give a shit about the franchise. I like Robot Chicken, but this bit didn't nudge me either way.

BTW, Parallax parallel FTW.

Brian is going home with at least $100K. I think that might be the most he's made for a few days' work. I'm not hating . . . I'm impressed. Also, Archie Comics is doing a project featuring a crossover with Jay & Silent Bob, and I'm betting that Dante will be in there.

Finally! The left side of the floor has taken matters into their own hands and decided that they should overtake brian. If you can't beat the 20k club, join the 20k club.

I thought Sifat and stephanie's strategies were good, because inheritance is horrible. Inheritance eventually takes you out. You fill find something that is not defendable.

From here on out. the two sides of the floor will fight for 20k. No more easy wins. Thank god. And no longer will the randomizer be a factor(cough * episode 3 * cough *), I think.

No hate on Brian, I'm just glad the other side of the floor came to their senses and didn't pass up the chance to even up the game.

So the woman who had the Crayon Colors category said (paraphrasing) she thought she had it down, but didn't realize there were 120 colors now. So I guess that confirms they are given categories to choose from, rather than coming in with one? (If that's been confirmed previously, my apologies.)

I generally don't like to see one contestant dominate a game, but it is hard not to root for Brian. He's done well defending his inherited categories and genuinely thrilled and grateful for the position he's found himself in. I'd be happy to see him win it all.

That was such a bizarre statement from her, RIGHT AFTER saying that she'd worked with kids for 20+ years! "I'm used to the box of 10" or however she put it. And she's 43 years old— back in the 90s Crayola had a box of 96! (And may have come out in the 80s.) And they definitely had boxes of more than 10 since before then.

I had the same thought.  I was like "there were dozens of colors when I was a kid.... how old are you?"  Then I see she's the same age as me.

I got frustrated watching people going back to the floor and refusing to play any kind of offense.  Kinda sick of Brian winning the $20,000 prize every time because people are too chicken to challenge him, or build up a competitive chunk of territory elsewhere on the board.  At least tonight he had to work for it.

I have no idea where she got '10' from either. I'm twenty years older than her, and I remember how thrilled I was getting my big box of 64 crayons (with the built-in sharpener!!!) as a kid. I can't believe anyone going in with this 'expert' category isn't aware.

Related but irrelevant: when I was very young, I called them 'Crayolins', some weird hybrid Crayola and crayons. Couldn't be convinced I was wrong, lol.

That sharpener never worked! Actually even if you weren't overly familiar with crayon colors it was fairly easy to guess the names since they were fill-in-the-blank clues that were a play on words.

I would be simultaneously impressed and disappointed. And now I think I get the shirt? Because he was in Clerks? And that's the kind of shirt Kevin Smith always wears? That's kind of sad.

It was kind of hilarious when he said (again, paraphrased) not to tell Kevin about the money because he'd probably ask him to finance Clerks 4. LOL!

There's a group of friends that includes Kevin & they all wear the same hockey shirts, always have. No different than any group of friends who wear a teams shirt.

It was more of a "color connection" duel to make the connection to the color.

Some of those connections were intuitive but there were a couple I would never have guessed.  I didn't know that Crayola had gone the route of kooky color names.  I was expecting burnt sienna and raw umber.  Showing my age again I guess.

I've been wondering about Brian's odd shirt since the beginning so I was happy to learn it has something to do with hockey.  I'm still curious about that red tab at the neckline.

Yesterday I caught an episode of 'Tales From the Darkside' from 1986. It was Christmas and a little girl opened one of her gifts, which happened to be a big honkin' box of crayons! Probably the 64 w/sharpener. What a coincidence.

Was that woman praying?

Yes, she was. Praying for one of the players (I couldn't hear which one) to "have the strength to totally dominate," or something like that. Now, I'm a church-goer and all, but that strikes me as a weird thing to pray for.

Brian is no longer earning money at the end of each game, but he's already gotten a 6-figure sum, so I don't suppose he's too upset. There's a lot of game shows that don't give you that much even if you win the whole thing.

I loved Physics lady, but MAN that RomCom loss was hard to watch.  Dude won without burning a single second of his time-boosted time.  I loved her message about leaving her mark on the game by passing Physics on, and thought the dude that inherited it would be safe for a long time...until the mechanical engineer entered the chat.  Daaaaaayyyyyym.

This was a fun episode.  Any other TAR watchers have the urge to start yelling "Come ON, Anna Leigh!  Anna Leigh, hurry UP!  Come ONNNN!!" ??  Call me petty, but I was kind of glad to see her come and go with no fanfare.  Even Rob Lowe (so handsome) was like, "Oh, Amazing Race with your dad?  That's nice.  Anyway..."  Buh-bye.

I want to see someone do a category about Rob Lowe's career.

I think if I were on this show, I'd do The Simpsons.

That rom-com battle was a slaughter.  Yuck.  Seems like Mike wouldn't have benefited much from saving his Time Boost anyway.

I thought I would do better on State Quarters, but I guess it's been too long since I had my collection.

Yeah, she was insufferable on Amazing Race, I'm glad to see her go so quickly. I think it's pretty hilarious she crapped out on her own category, Competition Shows. I knew more of them than she did. (MAN I wish they would bring back The Chase.)

Has Mari from the Bachelor played yet?  Her husband Kenny got booted in an early episode.

Oh, is that why they keep showing her? Every time I see her I think she's Jaimie Alexander.

I would have sucked a State Quarters. I could have guessed a few but it would have taken me far longer than either of those guys.

And Emily crapping out on her own category, Teen Dramas. Who doesn't know Buffy?? They both sucked at this.

The Rom Com showdown was even more embarrassing and man, I bet Mike was pissed at wasting his time boost.

I would so have picked The Crown if I were Ashley. Physics was hard. And I don't know a single Beyonce song.

I still don't get why they keep avoiding Anatomy. Time boost or not, there are only so many body parts.

I think it's more so Toni then it is the boost. There also isn't really an incentive to go for it. There's more incentive to try and make your way to Poetry but he's basically blocked off now.

That was a tough night for me.  I don't think I've ever even heard a Beyonce song and I knew none of the teen dramas and maybe one or two of the rom-coms.  I thought I'd do well with the competitions but there were some I didn't know at all.  To my surprise, the category I did well on was physics.

I'm waiting for someone to pick Anatomy.  I spent my career in the healthcare field so I expect to do well in that one.  I hope.

Didn't that happen last season?

Hello and goodbye, Anna Leigh. As expected, Rob didn't make a big deal over TAR. Never did find out if Garrett was on her season.

ETA: I forgot to ask . . . how messed up was it that we had a duel on Space Travel, and several answers were billionaires that dabble in that?

I think some of the strategy I'm noticing this time around, is to minimize your exposure to the randomizer. I think I especially noticed it last week when there were 3 single spots all hiding behind Anatomy and Poetry. One of them got randomizer picked, and she immediately snagged the other two single spots. Then instead of going for the bonus, she went back to the floor which I can see the value of. (I may be misremembering some details; I can't even remember what the categories were now).

If you have 2+ squares and are surrounded by 2+ square categories, then you yourself are safe from the randomizer AND you know the randomizer won't (can't) pick anyone around you. So you can be fairly confident you'll have time before your category will be picked and  you won't have to go on the attack right away either.

This strategy works best for people with squares near the edges where you already have some protection. Not that I'm likely to be on the game show, but that's probably what I would try to do.

On the other hand, if I inherit or get a category with a lot of space, I'd probably try to nibble at the single square categories around me (fighting towards an edge) to get a time boost and/or to cut down on the number of randomizer targets that can go after me.

I can't be specific without re-watching, but I was surprised at how many answers were accepted that differed from the answer shown on the screen. I suppose they have a pre-determined list of acceptable responses - last name only for people, airplane for jet fighter, etc - but some of them seemed to surprise even the person giving the answer.

I was also shocked that 'aircraft carrier' was a miss.

Same. I know so many of the answer, but come up with them a beat or two later. But I think that over all, taking that extra second to come up with it is better than passing.

ITA! The one that really shocked me was when they showed Doc Brown, and he said Doc and he was struggling to come up with his last name and they gave him credit for just saying Doc! WTF?!

I do wonder how they judge this show. Unlike other quiz shows like Jeopardy, the time limits are quite strict and you can't really reset if you mess up.

I would probably have a team of judges and split the categories up between them so the judges are familiar with it. And for each round, I'd have 3 judges listening to answers. If they think they hear the right answer they push a button. Any 2 judges pushing the button will give the contestant the clue.

It also seems like they get more specific as the round goes on. Early on they accept more generic answers like "Dinosaur" or "Airplane" but later on they may need something more specific ("Stegasaurus" or "Boeing 777" )

also, if you avoid the single squares because you're scared of David Madden, go back to the floor and let's say "European Geography" gets randomized, he is forced to play something else, meaning David might not ever play his expert category. this is just an example, but there's benefit to being scared of a category. You just have to wait for the randomizer to do it's work and force that person to be forced to play something else they might hate. The "critters" guy fell to this.

I keep waiting for someone to choose The Crown. I would rock that category.

I could have written the above comment word for word.  I'm also looking forward to seeing The Crown and hoping it's mostly about the British monarchy which has been my special interest for decades.

I call "Foul" on the "Puppets" category (despite getting most of them). A lot of those weren't puppets! Big Bird is certainly not a puppet (is Barney the Dinosaur a puppet? Of course not)! I also don't think of ventriloquist dummies as puppets either.

While it may look like it’s simply a person in a costume like Barney, Big Bird is, in fact, a puppet. While the performer is inside the costume, he still requires puppetry to work (it’s pretty ingenious how they do it…all the credit in the world to performers like Carol Spinney, because it is not an easy task!)
