Callum!! And Poh!! And Reynold I suppose. It was so nice them back and to have real life people who could properly interact with the contestants. I loved that nobody wanted wanted to do a Reynold dish except Therese, I think both Callum and Poh’s styles are far more accessible to people. I will say that his charcoal black sesame concoction looked completely unappetising but the green thing looked pretty cool. Week 3 seems a little early to expect them to do a Reynolds I would have thought it’d be better to save him for a pressure test later down the line. I did laugh at him practically inhaling Depinders cake though, I don’t blame him it looked and sounded absolutely delicious.

Aaron is starting to annoy me, I can’t quite work out why but I’m just not a fan. 

Tommy had a bad one but I’m glad he’s safe. Minoli seemed nice enough but I still don’t really have many feelings about most of the contestants yet so I’m not too upset about her leaving.

Sorry if I've repeated anything you've said but here's my post from the Superstars Week thread.

I really enjoyed tonight's episode, probably the best of the season so far.  Reasons?  I adored Callum in his season and if anything, after last season, seeing him with his wife and adorable baby girl, I love him even more.  Any time he's on this show, I'm there for it!  Secondly, this is mean but I was kind of glad that Reynold was so sidelined because it means there are far less of his clones this season than in recent seasons.  I'm sure we all realised Therese was going to cook something for his menu but I see Miss Instagram tried to and became so badly unstuck that she had to use that pin - ouch!  

Other random and disorganised thoughts:

  • Poh's speech to Kishwar was heartfelt and lovely.  Side note: how tiny must Kishwar be if the diminutive Poh almost towers over her?  Side note 2: WHAT did Kishwar do to her neck?
  • Please tell me I'm not the only 12-year-old who kept giggling over the "ginger fluff" cake.
  • I was quite shocked to see Minoli go tonight.  Usually, when someone's featured in the preview ads, that doesn't happen.  But I will say I'm very glad it wasn't Tommy.
  • Did Aaron rip anyone else off tonight?  It's hard to say when it's clear someone has studied this show very closely over a few years.
  • I'm actually really glad Poh was part of this challenge.  I have no issue whatsoever with people wanting to specialise in making desserts but I respect them a lot less if they can't make a single thing without a blast chiller or ice-cream machine.  This is why I far prefer Depinder to Therese - she can actually bake stuff, and do it well.

Oh hello Reynold, we meet again, you raging homophobe. I do NOT get it, how is he still a thing? I mean for crying out loud, careers have ended for way less! 
And furthermore, on Thursday we saw FIVE ICE CREAMS ON CRUMB. Do we really need Reynold, out of all people, there to encourage these people to do even more ice cream on crumb type of things? (Well, not an issue I guess since only three of them decided to go for Reynold's menu after all, but still. Also I'm not terribly sorry that Wynona had to play her pin.)

Extremely lovely to see Poh & Callum. ❤️ There sure was a lot of Poh energy going on in the kitchen with the oven-staring and all that!

Does Reynold have written into his contract that EVERYONE must exclaim at great length on the wonder and awe that is REYNOLD!!!! Honestly he kinda ruined the episode for me.

It's easy to love Callum. Poh is a LOT but she's also warm and has a great rapport with the cooks. Reynold felt like he was just there to meet his fans and pretend to be humble. Also that black dessert just looked unappetizing and gross. If I was working in his kitchen I'd throw it away because it looked like burned food scraps. Man, I just really don't love Reynold.

I love Kishwar and she's the one whose food I always want to eat.

I was, of course, sure that the guy with the fussy cake was going home since we've never met him before.

Many years ago when I was small my grandmother would make us kids a quick and easy mille feuille using graham crackers and whipped cream. It was so sweet and basic and we just loved it. But we certainly never called it a mille feuille. I first heard that word on an early Bake Off episode.

Having a ball! Wish you were sphere!

This episode was easily the most irritating of the season for me. The "I just can't decide whether this is a dessert" guy and the "let me recreate a bad cake" guy annoy me so much. Their personalities both come off as grating to me (which I admit is my problem and not theirs) and both are about as articulate as Andy, so of course they were among the favorites. 

After that, I was hoping Therese's dish would get nailed, but instead they were basically like "you are a goddess for making something we've seen fifty times before, only your version looks and tastes worse. Ten out of ten!"

The REVERED Poh and the SAINTLY Callum and the PERFECT IDEAL PERFECTION ENTITY Reynold bullshit was predictable but even more over the top than what I would have expected. "How dare you make a version of a dish that's on Poh's menu already?" "How dare you make a fully Japanese dish for Callum?" 

Kishwar really stands out to me for her personality and her cooking. She's too good for this show, but at least she seems to be a frontrunner. 

This episode did have some minor strengths, though, like not featuring Blokey and getting rid of two immunity pins.

I hope I get the chance to walk past Reynold's business(es) in America someday and feel smug about not going there and telling everyone I know why they shouldn't, either.

Boo that elimination sucked.  Felt like Minoli shouldn't have gone home.  A bit surprised Tommy didn't go home.  I thought that overcooking a salmon seemed to be a bigger problem than Minoli's dish (she seemed to execute her components well.  Like cooking her steak etc.).  Or the guy that made the dry tiramisu.  Also the guy made a ridiculously giant tiramisu when he presented it. 

The three menus was kind of pointless, because almost no one would take Reynold's menu.  Kind of funny that his menu made two people burn their immunity pins.

Weird episode - loved seeing Poh and Callum again but as usual, all attention was on Reynold!

She was in the previews saying  "I lost my sense of taste" which turned out to be due to chemo. But she has barely been featured since the first week.

In fairness, the challenge was "make something for one of these people's menus", and "cake that's never worked before that you don't have enough time to do even if you did know what you were doing" is SUCH a Poh move.

I wonder if there was a reason Masterchef's queerest cast ever avoided Reynold's menu like the plague, any reason at all. It is a mystery.

Apparently people like Reece and Brendan said they had no issues with Reynold last season but maybe this lot aren't so ready to believe his "I've changed" story.

Tonight's episode was good in that any challenge which tests actual culinary skills/knowledge has got to be a positive. 

How did everyone feel about the Tommy situation?  At first I thought he'd kind of been shafted into doing the dessert element when he doesn't have the skills, but then I started to wonder whether he could have made a mayonnaise or a filled pasta.  Is he good at filleting fish or making curry? I think the issue might be that he's one of the less versatile contestants and this challenge may have really showed that up.  He was lucky he was on a team that got him through safely.

Interesting that Justin's mayonnaise was judged the best and he was the only one not to put sugar in it (I mean, really - sugar in mayo?).  

Tom was kind of adorable tonight in his reactions to hearing about Depinder winning her round, etc.  

Just as I suspected, the instant she has to bake something, suddenly Therese doesn't seem like such a dessert queen.  

Since we'd basically never seen her on screen for more than two minutes in the past, Sabine is my pick to go tomorrow night. And if that happens it'll be a shame since she got the only point for the Purple Team tonight.

Oh, poor Tommy. He was a bit lost, wasn't he. I think he should've firmly put his foot down and said "you guys, I can't cook desserts and therefore I will not cook a dessert in this challenge that is supposed to be about playing to your strengths". He's a dear. I giggled like a madman when he laced his tart with ice cream going "I'm putting it into the tart and this is my dessert" while Dan looked like he was ready to have a stroke up in the gantry. 

I really do like when they introduce new challenges ("new" as in I don't at least remember this having been done before).

I think what it came down to was that Tommy's and Conor's flavours were good, but Minoli's (supposedly strong) flavours ended up clashing with one another, and it was, in the end, a bigger sin than overcooking the protein. I think. But I was bummed out that she went home, too.

How was Brent the only one exposed to COVID? I thought they all lived together for the duration of the show. Though I suppose I’m glad I don’t have to hear him being praised for doing the bare minimum in a cook.

I think Tom and Depinder have become my favourites. Watching the pair of them bounce around with excitement about pretty much everything was the most enjoyable part of the episode.

Yeah. That’s what happens when you never go near an oven and just make frozen things all day long. I wonder if that third pin is going to be in action tomorrow. Therese doesn’t seem to do much other than dessert and even those aren’t that great.

I’m think that must have played into but also Reynold’s food is just kind of specific and technical. I’m sure it’s a lot easier to put up a Callum or Poh type dish (both of which looked infinitely nicer than that charcoal monstrosity). Their food is just more relatable (and delicious looking).

Me too. This was a fun task, I guess the new guidelines are good for forcing them to get creative with team tasks since they can’t have them cook for random crowds at the beach/market/pop up restaurant etc.

I've only just watched Sunday's episode so apologies for not reading through the whole thread, but OMG I would die in a battlefield for Kishwar. For the better part of the episode I was CONVINCED she was going home because of how much interview time she was getting and it was very very distressing. I'm so happy it was because she absolutely nailed her dish, and seeing her talk about how much Poh meant to her and her cooking was the sweetest thing. And yes, she is TINY. I love her.

I'm confused, why is people burning their immunity pins so quickly a good thing? I love Elise but that was some wack reasoning right there. "I'm gonna do something that I will probably not have enough time to do but that's OK because I can just play my pin." Like, isn't the point to NOT basically force yourself to play it so early so that it can save you later on when the odds of elimination are much higher? IDK, that would be my strategy if I had an immunity pin, but maybe that's why I would suck at reality shows like this one.

I don't get what's so bothersome to people about Therese, but fangirling so hard over REYNOLD of all people does warrant a side-eye.

I was so sure Minoli would last longer because of how much backstory we were given during auditions. What a bummer. The ladies are dropping like flies so far.

Please, more challenges like tonight's!  They probably won't be able to pull that trick too many times because contestants might correctly second guess so that they end up cooking their actual preference of sweet or savoury, but tonight it worked an absolute treat.  It does seem at times that over the years the show slipped into a lazy zone of "cook whatever you like in 75 minutes, using everything in the garden and the pantry" and it's great that it's been put back on track and is actually setting contestants real challenges which sort the sheep from the goats.

I like Therese when she's not trying so hard to be Reynold Mk II.  Tonight she won a lot more respect from me because when obliged to make a savoury dish many miles away from her frozen dome comfort zone, she got in, gave it a red hot go, backed herself by not playing the pin and probably surprised a few people with how well she did (maybe even herself). 

Eric did so well to be the only person of the four cooking the dessert to actually have a useable tempered chocolate tart shell.  Maybe sometimes it helps being a medical student like he is or a pharmacist like Depinder because things like tempering chocolate ARE about chemistry.  My heart broke for poor Kishwar when she was so upset about not having a proper finished dish.  I know Sabine and Maja were in the same boat but I think Mel's dead right about Kishwar - she's a perfectionist and it seemed to distress her the most.  Needless to say I'm extremely glad she survived.  I felt for Maja but I never felt she was one of the stronger cooks anyway.

Now, queerest cast ever?  Out of the 24 we started with, who fits the category?  

Definite: Conor, Dan, Eric, Jess, Scott, Tom, Trent.

Maybe: Aaron said in the first episode that he should have realised when he was younger that cooking was a good way to meet girls, but...

My gaydar isn't 100% but that estimate would make one third of the cast, which definitely is the most contestants in one season so far.  Thoughts?

For my personal emotional well being I propose that we implement a new rule. Anyone who make Kishwar sad is immediately banned from the MC kitchen forever. Heck, let's just declare Kishwar the winner and let everyone else battle for second.

That was actually an excellent twist.

I'm ok with never hearing the word gutsack on a cooking show ever again.

Question: What is the fish coral(sp?) they were talking about in conjunction with the gutsack? Is that roe? Tried to google but I think I'm off on the spelling.

I just Googled it and found this answer: "The 'coral' is the developing ovary or egg sac, found in the carapace of the female; it turns red on cooking and is quite tasty alone, or beaten into sauces."  So I guess my next question is, how are you supposed to know if it's a female yabby?

I don't know about yabbies, but with lobster - you find out when you open it up, and there's coral (there are also some differences in the shell shape & swimmerets (the little legs on the underside) but it's subtle. Whoever sells it to you should be able to tell the difference). Not all females will have some, but with the one lobster I cooked that did (I've only cooked a few lobsters), it was pretty obvious.

I have a thing for leather jackets and tonight I got, not only one, but two leather jackets for my viewing pleasure! Thank you Pete, thank you Tom. 

Ooh, those pesky tart shells. Excuse me my ignorance when it comes to baking, but does the fact that they're not coming out of the mold mean that the chocolate wasn't tempered properly? Also, why not use silicone molds? Were they not allowed? Is Jock just a sadist who sucks his life force out of people's tears? So many questions.

Hmmm, I'm still on the fence about Tom and Eric (unless it's been stated somewhere and I've missed it / don't remember). Aaron is pinging my gaydar for sure, but it is known to have been faulty in the past.

The last two episodes have been pretty straightforward (apparently unlike the cast, which I think is great and will intentionally say nothing else about).

Eric is starting to annoy me. Ginger fluff cake man and I'm not sure if it's a dessert man are continuing to annoy me. As always, I blame myself for this.

Maja and Sabine both seemed clueless and I would have been fine with both going home.

It didn't seem like there was a real chance Kishwar would be eliminated, but her reaction to struggling with the challenge made her even more endearing.

I would like to see Tom and Kishwar in the final.

After the crimes against fashion repeatedly committed on this show by Matt and George, I'm hesitant to say anything about Andy, except maybe he's in on the joke? I'd like to give him credit for something. And that's the most generous comment I'll be making this whole season, most likely.

Completely there with you. Where do I sign? 

Switching the tarts was such a fucking dick move that it actually made me angry. If that ended up being Kishwar's downfall, Jock would have been dead to me (sorry, @Rosenrot). At least I had Melissa's arms to distract me.

That said, I like Therese a lot more than I already did after tonight. Mad respect for just pushing through with the tart and actually doing a good job with it. I thought for sure she'd be the one eliminated after I read somewhere about "the most shocking elimination" tonight, which fit with her not playing her pin, but it was nice to see that not be the case.

I think you've got them all, unless there are some stealth ones not clockable by your standard gaydar (like Brendan last season). Aaron looks way too straight to me, but who knows. I'm still holding out hope for another of the ladies, but it might be a lost cause. Is that really the most contestants in one season? I already thought last season was pretty gay, so that's interesting.

Conor should have gone home - that Tiramisu cake was abominable. On the next episode he's sporting a new do  apparently he left the barber chair prematurely.

Following up with Top 5 Mystery Box - how did this guy get there with a repeat cook? What an insult to those who exercised creativity and technique. I can't wait for this guy to go home. Before this episode he'd been hovering around the bottom. There's something else going on here...he must know someone cuz he ain't nowhere good enough to qualify.

LOL. I'd avoid Reynold's desserts just because they seem like they lack flavour, even though very nice to look at.

I thought Brendan was a pretty standard ping though :P

Elim episode: I liked the twist. Good on them for shaking things up a bit. I was also super impressed with Therese’s tart. There may be hope for her yet. I’m glad Kishwar was ok as well, im not ready for her to go yet.

Mystery box episode: So much ice cream and pasta. I won’t hold it against them too much since the basic pantry does limit their options somewhat. I will say Therse’s crispy roti with caramel looked soooo good. I want some of that now (she can keep her basil ice cream though). Kishwar’s pasta also looked yummy. 

Im glad Depinder didn’t let the Jock and Andy put her off doing her dish her way and it worked out for her. Those things usually go the other way when the judges are waving the warning flag and hinting something sounds terrible.

I might be misremembering but didn’t Conor already make an olive oil cake once before? Or was that someone else?

Me too. The returning contestants was fun but I didn’t like Shashis season too much and season 12 was mostly fine until the end when Larissa took over the show (and my girl Tessa wuz robbed!)

I'm glad she stuck to her guns, too.  She's really got some skills.,

I would like to make an ongoing request to TPTB on this show.  Can you PLEASE set several challenges where there are specific instructions that whatever you make, you can't use the ice-cream machine or the blast chiller?  Wouldn't that sort out the wheat from the chaff!  Ironically, as a result of the restrictions of this week, Therese is showing that she has a much wider skill set than you'd believe.  Clearly, though, given a choice she would make useless frozen domes with mirror glazes every day of the week.

Seconded! For a moment I was coming round to Therese but it turns out “pushing the boat out” for her is just another ice cream with a horrid wet looking disc instead of a crumb. You had blue cheese and corn woman! And a full pantry! There’s really not a single savoury dish she could think of with that pair? I also didn’t get why people were so shocked by that combination, seems like the sweetness of corn against the saltiness of blue cheese would mesh pretty well. 
 

Despite Therese I really liked the task in general, letting them pick something they liked but adding that twist of the second ingredient to force them to actually think and improvise. Though some of those pairing were a easier than others. Poor Dan got severely screwed with liquorice. He’s right, it’s evil and disgusting. Depinder lucked out massively with chilli and mango it gives so many options. I’m glad she didn’t do an ice cream and showed some range with the fried chicken (and hopefully someone used the rest of those 3 chickens after she only used the wings).

On a not cooking front Depinder and Tom remain my favs, the “shut up Tom” exchange was funny.

Skipped Wednesday and the masterclass, and I can certainly wait until Sunday to see another episode packed with people talking about how proud they are of their cooking accomplishments.

A granita wouldn't be impressive on Masterchef Toddler, and that was the only thing Conor got right. No gold star for you. Therese's wildly inventive idea (since no one has ever heard of a blue cheese ice cream, cheesecake, or anything of the sort in the history of the culinary universe) failed, but ten out of ten for "creativity" for copying Reynold again. Did you know Reynold was on this show and he created masterful perfection (aside from his frozen liquid shortbread, and I don't even want to think about why that's a name for a food)?

Actually, I was surprised that Depinder got immunity, mostly because I thought she clearly deserved to, but also because the ten minute pause before they tasted the panna cotta convinced me that licorice gagger was going to win it.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty tepid episode. Most of the cooking doesn't look impressive, but at least the judges are being a little bit more critical. I'm sure that won't happen again.

I can't agree with you (or Dan) about liquorice because I love it, but I certainly wouldn't want to eat it in connection with figs!  But I agree that Depinder had possibly the easiest pair of ingredients out of those chosen. She still had to do a good dish with them, though, and clearly she did.  And it wasn't fried chicken ice cream with a chili-infused mirror glaze and a mango sable.  Thank God.

OMG, I can't believe it! I am almost caught up. But only cuz I have skipped over group challenge and pressure test episodes! Were the episodes always this long? Bear with me, I am coming straight from my beloved MC UK where there is no drama, few tears, no judges performing bad local theater to fake out the contestants, and no whooping and hollering. It's almost too much for me, but I persisted and am starting to settle in for the looooong haul! : D

Lol! Sure it’s a much more sedate affair focussed on actual cooking and not sob stories and one trick ponies but the downside is Gregg exists so it all evens out in the end ;)

My dad said the same thing during the team challenge when his steak looked clearly overdone. He was like, "Yeah, this guy isn't going to go far." And yet, here he is, making it to the immunity challenge with... an olive oil cake. OK, then.

I rolled my eyes when they did the whole "special mention" to Sabina for being "so close". If she apparently wasn't good enough to cook for immunity, they should have just saved it. It came across extremely patronizing.

I've realized I find Mystery Box/Immunity episodes kind of meh since there are no real stakes, but having Kishwar and Depinder in the immunity one at least made it more watchable.

OMG I thought the same thing. That for all the praise for her dish, they would somehow decide to give it to Dan because, IDK, he got the short end of the stick and made it work or something. Wild that it sometimes seems unlikely that the person who deserves to win whatever is at stake will actually win it.

But anyway, yassss Depinder!!! She's growing into another of my big faves.

The way Kishwar took her criticisms in stride made me want to hug her. I adore her.

Completely agree about the moratorium on ice creams. Besides the fact that I find it THE most boring dessert in existence, it's just the most cop-out solution to a challenge. That said, there was a moment when Melissa was tasting Therese's dish where I started googling "how to become a blue cheese ice cream," so I guess it does have SOME perks...

Not gonna lie, I was lowkey hoping they would award Dan with the immunity just because I love liquorice in all its forms and felt like liquorice and figs was waaay harder a combination than chili and mango, and Dan actually pulled it off. I mean, okay, there was the panna cotta that I was mildly offended by, but hey, at least it wasn't ice cream! I don't mind Depinder winning though, her dish looked delish.  

I know Aerobicidal already mentioned this, but literally "ten out of ten for creativity" when all Therese made was an ice cream sandwich and one element was directly copied from Reynold. ... Okay then. (I'm fairly sure Reynold didn't invent the liquid shortbread whatchamacallit  monstrosity, but they sure made it seem that way.) 

I was secretly hoping Jock would use the term "sexy wobble" when talking about the panna cotta, but I think Matt P. has trademarked it.

I totally agree - just because you love cooking dessert doesn't mean there are not better dishes you could make.  My brain immediately went to that gorgeous charred Mexican corn with blue cheese instead of the Mexican cheese we cannot get out here in the country.  I make a blue cheese sauce to dip it in.
