The show is expected to take place between the final movie of George Lucas’s prequels, Revenge Of The Sith, and A New Hope.

McGregor also confirmed last month that the series will be directed by Deborah Chow, who directed two episodes in the first series of The Mandalorian, and that it will use the same technology as The Mandalorian, the StageCraft tech, in which the show’s detailed SFX backgrounds are projected onto ultra-high resolution screens behind the actors.

 New to the mix, as announced on Monday morning (and with no character details), are Rupert Friend (Homeland), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Sung Kang (Power), Simone Kessell (The Crossing), O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie.

Additionally, Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will reprise their prequel trilogy roles as young Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen Lars and Aunt Beru.

"I Have the Career I Started Out Wanting": Ewan McGregor on Reviving Obi-Wan and "Going to the Extremes" to Play Halston
by Seth Abramovitch April 28, 2021
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/ewan-mcgregor-obi-wan-star-wars-halston

Quote

For McGregor, a return to the Star Wars universe — the show picks up a decade after the events of 2005's Revenge of the Sith — is the most tantalizing proposition to come his way in ages. When he beat out Kenneth Branagh, Tim Roth and Joseph Fiennes to play the character in 1999's The Phantom Menace, the edgy indie star who'd become famous portraying a toilet-diving heroin addict assumed he was about to ascend to the same rung of cinematic immortality as Harrison Ford's Han Solo and Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia.

It didn't quite play out that way. Star Wars fans' initial reception to that film, and the two that followed, ranged from muted appreciation to utter indifference to — the most vocal faction — outright hostility. Looking back, McGregor, whose subtle Obi-Wan was seen as a bright spot in the troubled series, acknowledges that it "was hard they didn't get well received. That was quite difficult. They were universally not very much liked."
*  *  *
But what began as a star fantasy evolved over a number of years into an actor's nightmare. With each successive and underwhelming prequel release, director George Lucas employed more and more CGI, "because George loves technology and loves pushing into that realm," McGregor explains. "He wanted more and more control over what we see in the background." By Revenge of the Sith, physical sets and backdrops had almost entirely been replaced by bluescreens. "After three or four months of that, it just gets really tedious — especially when the scenes are … I don't want to be rude, but it's not Shakespeare," he continues. "There's not something to dig into in the dialogue that can satisfy you when there's no environment there. It was quite hard to do."

That won't be a problem on the set of Obi-Wan Kenobi, where, as pioneered by creator Jon Favreau on The Mandalorian in a process called StageCraft, "they project [the virtual backgrounds] onto this massive LED screen. So if you're in a desert, you're standing in the middle of a desert. If you're in the snow, you're surrounded by snow. And if you're in a cockpit of a starfighter, you're in space. It's going to feel so much more real."
*  *  *
McGregor had been in talks to reprise the character in some form for the past seven years. It was originally going to be a feature film, until 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed and Disney and Lucasfilm pivoted to streaming. But until the project was announced in August 2019, McGregor was sworn to secrecy. "I'd see stuff on social media like, 'They better cast Ewan as Obi-Wan,' and I wasn't able to say anything," he says. "But it was pretty humiliating to think that [Disney] might be thinking about casting someone else."

They weren't, of course, as McGregor is now almost as much associated with Obi-Wan as the late Alec Guinness, who played him in the original trilogy. (The prequels have grown in admiration in the intervening years, particularly among the millennials who grew up with them.) All six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi will be penned by Joby Harold (2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and helmed by Deborah Chow, a Canadian who directed two episodes of Mandalorian. And it has already been announced — to much fan delirium — that the first season will feature the return of Hayden Christensen as young Darth Vader.

While principal photography has not yet commenced, McGregor says he "has done some screen tests with Deborah and other people, and I can see that she is a really, really good director." Might some of those screen tests be with a young Luke Skywalker? He flashes that famous Ewan McGregor grin. "That's very possible," he says. "I don't know."

‘It’s F–kin’ Obi-Wan!’: Kumail Nanjiani Previews Disney+’s ‘Kenobi’
‘By BRIAN HIATT    OCTOBER 12, 2021

How did your role in Obi-Wan Kenobi come about?
My agents called me and it was the whole group of them that never call you. And I was like, “OK, this is either amazing news or really awful news.” And they’re like, “They want you to play a part in Obi-Wan, and apparently it’s substantial.” So then I talked to [director Deborah Chow] and we had a great conversation. And the character sounded awesome — I was so excited about this character. We haven’t seen this exact thing in Star Wars yet. This is like a new version of a type of Star Wars character we’ve seen before. And she was trying to sell me on it. And I was like, “I was gonna do it before the conversation!” It was kind of perfect. Right after quarantine I got to do a job, in town, and it was in Star Wars. It was just the most joyful first job back possible. I didn’t know how I could beat the experience I’ve had, which is a Marvel movie with Chloé Zhao, who is amazing, and maybe the greatest cast ever assembled, and then have Obi-Wan as the next thing, with another really fantastic cast. Ewan McGregor! Really? I don’t know where I go from there. [Laughs.] And so I decided to walk into the middle of the woods.

What was it like on set?
I had this moment. I’d heard Ewan [McGregor] was supernice. And then we got to know each other a little bit, just hanging out and talking. Then there was this weird moment where I’m talking to Ewan and they yell “Action,” and he’d started talking to me, and I was like, “Oh, I’m talking to Obi-Wan right now. This is not Ewan McGregor. This is Obi-Wan Kenobi that I’m talking to.” My character is supposed to be a little bit intimidated by him, and I was a little bit intimidated. You know, it’s fucking Obi-Wan, what are you gonna do?

The show is shot on the Volume, which is that remarkable virtual set also used on The Mandalorian, where the CGI is happening all around you in real time. How did that affect things for you?
You really feel like you’re there. The first scene we shot, it was Star Wars outside the windows, with aliens walking around and ships flying by and all this stuff, but the rest of it just looked like a warehouse. So I did a couple of takes and then Ewan was like, “You know, none of this is real.” I knew the windows weren’t real, but the walls weren’t either! I looked and I was like, “Wow, the walls are projected.” The only thing that was real in the whole room was the desk I was sitting at. It was wild. It was really, really exciting. I love shooting like that, because you don’t have to pretend that you’re on a spaceship flying through space. It really feels like you’re in a spaceship flying through space. And it’s amazing to be inside the world of Star Wars, the world that I’ve been watching since I was born. I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember. In fact, I just went to Disneyland, and I went to the Star Wars world, and I was like, “Oh, this kinda feels like being at work.”

Special look.

Ahead of the show, I just want to drop my premise for a Kenobi show. It's been in my head for many years, and I've mentioned it a few times here and there. He's not going to willingly leave Tatooine for anything. So he's kidnapped by a bounty hunter, or maybe a group, and has to escape and get back home.

Will the show go in this direction? I doubt it. But if it does, I will be a happy man.

Are we getting the trailer today? I saw Obi-Wan Kenobi trending but, I have no idea why

Some fans can get themselves worked up over the slightest and often not even connected things. I know the new Lego game has gone gold and will soon ship. Surely Obi-Wan will appear in that. But also I'm sure some people are hoping for a double dip of Star Wars news today.

So Obi-Wan looks at Luke, sees a kid pretending to be a podracer. Has horrible flashbacks to Anakin. But we know how Luke turns out. He has some rough patches, but comes good in the end. Unless we're supposed to forget everything that's come since, or this is an Infinities story*. On first look, it's a fun little moment. On second, I don't quite see the point. On third, though, Obi-Wan doesn't know what the audience does. If he's proceeding with faulty or incomplete information, that's an interesting idea. Have I just talked myself around on it?

*Infinities were the SW versions of Marvel's What If comics.

*shrugs* I read that clip just as Obi-Wan keeping watch over little Luke from afar, with no deeper meaning than that. We're not shown flashbacks, and we're not shown any fear of Luke becoming another Anakin. We're shown Obi-Wan watching a little boy playing and wishing/hoping for him to stay hidden and safe. That's why Obi-Wan is there in the first place, to watch over Luke and try to keep him hidden and safe. We already know that much from previous films. This series will explore what that was actually like for him, in practice, I guess - the loneliness and the danger of this life that he has chosen.

Plus Rebels confirmed it, Obi-Wan watches Luke without interacting and he's protecting him.

BTW - I think that might be Echo that the Grand Inquisitor is threatening with his twirly lightsaber

I was hoping for a glimpse of Ahsoka. But that's probably asking for too much. Maybe they will meet in her show - or never. Still grumpy that Luke-Ahsoka was more or less given the 'so that happened-no big deal' treatment in the Book of Boba Fett of all places.

Obi-Wan is a Force Ghost by the time of Ahsoka's series. Obi-Wan Series predates Rebels by about 4 years. It's unlikely that Ahsoka met Obi-Wan at this point since she believed Anakin dead until she faced Vader on Malachor. Unless Obi-Wan pulls another "point of view" lie on Ahsoka the way he did Luke.

Personally, I'm hoping to see Anakin's force Ghost in the Ahsoka series and, I can't believe I said that because I hated them putting Hayden in the remastered RotJ. I blame Feloni and, Clone Wars, he made me care about Anakin in a way the prequel didn't.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Darth Maul Scenes Cut, Luke Skywalker Replaced During Creative Overhaul
BY BORYS KIT, AARON COUCH    MARCH 14, 2022
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/obi-wan-kenobi-darth-maul-scenes-cut-luke-skywalker-replaced-during-creative-overhaul-1235108192/

Quote

Darth Maul, a chief antagonist of Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi who first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, is not expected to appear in the series. But, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, not only was the Sith Lord initially slated to return to the live-action Disney+ series as a key villain, actor Ray Park was in active prep to reprise Maul.

That, however, was before those scenes were scrapped amid a creative overhaul that ultimately saw other antagonists, including Darth Vader, added to the show.
*  *  *
Sources note that Filoni and Favreau were concerned about Obi-Wan covering similar ground as Mandalorian — the Lone Wolf and Cub-like story of Kenobi coming out of hiding to protect a child-aged Luke Skywalker. Maul was one of the villains who would participate in the hunt for the pair; Vader was nowhere to be found in this faraway galaxy at this stage, according to those with knowledge of the project. Also, Filoni and Favreau pushed Chow and the show to “go bigger,” according to several sources. In any case, those concerns made their way to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, who pressed the pause button. (Joby Harold was eventually hired as the show’s new writer.)

It is unclear how far along in the process things initially unraveled. A boy was chosen to play young Skywalker, but no scenes with him were shot. As far as Park’s Maul goes, the picture is more cloudy. One source says Park was on set for preproduction and was also involved in stunt training. The source says footage of Park may have been shot, although another source says it could have been test footage. Whatever the case, Park was back as Maul, or so he believed.
*  *  *
A Lucasfilm source contradicted the account, saying Maul was never intended to return for the series.

The overhaul also led to a new search for a young Skywalker, and a new actor was picked. THR has learned the new Luke is Grant Feely, whose only credit, according to IMDb, is an episode of Creepshow.

That is a terrible idea. Did no one tell the execs that the 25th is the perfect day to release anything Star Wars?

It is a holiday weekend, they are releasing twice the episodes for the premiere and the next episode will arrive shortly thereafter. I think the first episode might have had a little less pizazz than they wanted, so to spice things up and get the story moving, give people the holiday weekend to create buzz and to get the word out.

Ewan McGregor Describes A Moment Of True Fear While Shooting Obi-Wan Kenobi
BY ANDREW MCRAE    APRIL 25, 2022
https://gamerant.com/ewan-mcgregor-obi-wan-kenobi-darth-vader-scary-moment/

Quote

Seeing Darth Vader on set for the first time put McGregor right back into his childhood all over again (Colin Farrell had a similar reaction to seeing Robert Pattinson in The Batman for the first time). Though he had acted alongside Hayden Christensen for years, McGregor had never been face-to-face with Darth Vader before. Unlike Alec Guinness, whose very first at-bat in the role saw him facing down Darth Vader aboard the Death Star, there’d been no such interaction with his version of Obi-Wan to date. "I’ve never met Darth Vader," he said in a recent interview with Total Film magazine. "I had rehearsed the scene with Vader, but not with the helmet on or anything like that. When we came to do the scene, when they shouted 'action,' he had to come from behind me. I turned around, and fucking Darth Vader was coming at me. It was like I was six again. I’d never acted into Vader’s helmet. I’d never looked him in the eye.”
*  *  *
He went on to say he had a similarly visceral reaction to facing Stormtroopers for the first time (since, despite acting opposite Clone Troopers, those were CGI). He said it’s a different thing to face someone actually in armor, aiming a blaster at you. “It’s like actual childhood memories of being scared. That’s how deeply it’s in us. I’ve acted for 30 years, and I’ve never been genuinely frightened when I’m acting frightened... But I had moments on this that were genuinely quite scary. It’s so funny.”

Hayden Christensen teases more Darth Vader: "The extent of this journey remains to be seen"
By Jack Shepherd    April 25, 2022
https://www.gamesradar.com/hayden-christensen-darth-vader-obi-wan-kenobi-more/

Quote

"When George [Lucas] had brought me onto the prequels, it was to play Anakin," Christensen tells Total Film in the new issue of the magazine, which features Obi-Wan Kenobi on the cover.

"He gets knighted as Darth Vader towards the end, and for a couple of scenes I get to put the suit on. But my journey with the character was with Anakin Skywalker. But the character? He’s such a complex character. And now, getting to explore the mindset and the emotional state of Darth Vader, has been a lot of fun.

Christensen's tight-lipped when it comes to revealing any specifics about returning to the role – he says "no comment" when asked whether James Earl Jones will voice the character in the upcoming Disney Plus series. And while Christensen won't confirm reports that he will return for the new spin-off series about Ashoka Tano, he does tease that his own journey with Vader may not be complete just yet.

"The extent of this journey, I think, remains to be seen," he says. "But what a privilege to get to come back and do this, and to be a part of this project."

Darth Maul Was Never Going to be in Obi-Wan Kenobi
By Casey David Muir-Taylor   April 25, 2022
https://www.ign.com/articles/darth-maul-obi-wan-was-never-going-to-be

Quote

In an interview for Total Film magazine, as first reported by GamesRadar, Chow says, "As long as I’ve been involved, we’ve never had Darth Maul in any of it."

She goes on to say that the story between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul ended with his defeat in the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

"Dave [Filoni] did a beautiful job of telling that story already," Chow says.

While the series will feature Darth Vader, that decision "was not made lightly." When considering where to take the story that bridges the gap between the prequels and the original trilogy, she asked questions like, “Where is Obi-Wan’s starting place? What has been important to him in his life?”

Chow says that both Anakin and Vader were a “huge and profound part” of Obi-Wan’s life so including him “made sense.”

The exchange with Owen was very intriguing. So am I right in assuming that the Skywalkers didn’t know Anakin joined the dark side? Obi-Wan just told them he was killed in the Clone Wars like he told Luke later on?
