I think it's fair to assume Arturo and Max were having sex which yes, is statutory rape. And no, IMO, Sam did not handle it in the right way, but I think Hollywood is more permissive where parenting is concerned, on screen and in real life. I realize that is a gross generalization, but I remember being absolutely shocked years ago reading about how Linda Blair's mother let her move in with her boyfriend when she was only 16, and that's just one example. I forgot to add earlier that I really could have done without the episode starting with Sam on the toilet. Totally unnecessary. Was the brief sliver of her ass the nudity we were warned about?

S08.E03: Battle for the South: Sweet Home Alabama
Nessie replied to xaxat's topic in The Great Food Truck Race [V]
Re: the challenge - while it's true they didn't cheat, it still irked me, as it has in seasons past when other teams have ignored challenges. I really wish they would give the challenges real stakes, so if a team chose to ignore them, they actually took a hit. Otherwise, why do they even bother having them? Like @Rachel RSL, I was hoping for a last minute curveball of only the desserts sold during the dollar hour counting. That would have wiped that smug smile off Mikey's perfectly glossed lips. Re: the spontaneous pricing - granted I wasn't watching too closely, but how did he know how much each person was willing to spend? Did he start high and then negotiate down? Isn't that a little dangerous when you have a line? For example, if you let one person pay $1 for a doughnut and the person behind hears, you kind of have to let that person have it for $1 too, right? And so on and so on? -
Ugh, Arturo and his brother were just gross. Agree that Sam should have threatened him with the police from the very beginning and shut down his smug ass immediately. I couldn't stand Frankie last year, but I did like her with Jason at the piano. I also love Phil being her normal racist self, and Sam telling her that Jason lived in Bel Air and that his grandfather was Harry Belafonte. That was actually my only laugh of the episode.

I like Kiki, although he's not my favorite, and I don't think he's got a chance of winning. I'm pretty sure Lex will, although I want Koine to...I actually want her to win enough that it just may motivate me to vote, for the first time in years.

I don't have a lot to say about this episode that others haven't said, except I have to comment on the poster in Kelsey's office. What was that??? It looked like an S&M version of Pride & Prejudice! I was so disturbed by it, because 1. Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books and 2. as a book lover from way back, covers matter to me. I actually make prints of my favorite book covers and hang them on my walls and that...well, for one thing, it had absolutely nothing to do with the actual book. I just don't get it...wouldn't anyone picking up the book and reading it based on the cover be disappointed that there was no blindfolding involved at all? It reminded of a show that was on Bravo several years ago called Work of Art. In one episode, they had to design covers for classic books. The girl who got Pride & Prejudice had never read the book and it was so obvious, because her immediate instinct was to go into the bathroom and photograph herself naked, holding a top hat. I mean...what? Ok, yes, I know I'm probably harping on this too much, but IMO, people in publishing should know how important covers are to books, and it really pisses me off when a cover has nothing whatsoever to do with the story itself.

Don at the alien convention was probably my favorite thing this show has ever done. The topper was him trying to get Jeff to guess where he had been and Jeff refusing to play along. On the flip side, I hate the Chelsea/Father Doug story (mainly because I hate cheating stories and this one is boring as well) and I really don't want a pregnancy story line, regardless of who the father is.

Overall, I was pretty underwhelmed by tonight's show. The only dance I really liked was Koine and Marco's, which was beautiful and actually made me tear up at the end. The disco just highlighted for me what a poor partner Lex is and then made me really worry about him, Mark's dance seemed really "Mark" to me and just basically made me miss Mark and want to go to YouTube and find all his old dances and watch them on a loop, and the Bollywood was probably the most I've liked Kaylee, but that's not saying much, as I haven't warmed up to her, as much as I've tried. I am happy with the results, though. I am thrilled Koine made it, very surprised about Kiki (but not unhappy), and very not-surprised about Lex and Taylor. Koine and Lex awkwardly speaking Japanese to each other was adorable and just made me love her more. I was so happy she didn't go home after finding out her brother gave up his promising ice skating career for her dancing. Funnily enough, that sentiment didn't extend to learning Kiki's brother had given up his dancing for him.

Late to the party, but I just binged the show over the weekend, as I find I enjoy it more when I binge it. I'm about half way through right now. This has always been the thing that has bothered me the most about Charles, and also about Liza not immediately putting a stop to it. I just can't get past it. He is her boss, and even if it doesn't bother him, does Liza really want to be the girl that slept with the boss? I don't care how good looking and/or charming he is. Unless she is prepared to quit, there's not really a way this can end well for her (unless they get married, of course, but that's not a show I want to watch). She will always be that girl - or is that another thing that doesn't matter anymore? This. The really scary thing is that at 50, I'm the 3rd youngest person in my small office (there are only 7 of us), so I have been designated the "web guru" by default (it has been a very slow, painful learning process). The boss, as the 2nd youngest, is the Facebook guy. The youngest, while technically an "older millennial" and constantly glued to her phone, is responsible for nothing web based, as she is pretty hopeless with it all. She can't even manage her own calendar without my help. We do what we can. Totally unrelated to anything, but my birthday was in June, and it's only been in the last few weeks that I have been able to say my age out loud...I was so not ready for this. I have a totally different take on this scene from you and everyone else, it seems. I didn't see Marilyn attacking Diana's femininity, or even calling Diana transgender, at least seriously. Marilyn is a spin doctor and that's what her book is about. She was explaining what she does and how she does it and why she is so good at her job and how she shapes narratives. As she says "You say it loud, you say it often, then when people contradict you, they sound like defensive babies". Was it deliberate? Absolutely. Diana had challenged her by saying (correctly) that "fact" and "factotum" were two separate words. But I don't think it was malicious or a slam on transsexuals or even Diana. It was a very effective demonstration on how narratives can be very easily manipulated. I didn't find the scene particularly funny, but I didn't think it was offensive. Amen! Like I said, I'm only about 1/2 way through the season, but I really hope this doesn't happen. Not that Josh owes her anything, because he really, really doesn't, and Liza would probably try to pretend that it was all good, but how could it not hurt? For what it's worth, my 23 year old son was shocked when I told him that Sutton Foster was 42. He said he didn't really buy her as 26, but would have believed that she was 30 or so.

America's Test Kitchen - General Discussion
Nessie replied to David T. Cole's topic in America's Test Kitchen
Thanks for the head's up @Snarklepuss. Looks like I missed the first episode yesterday on my PBS, but I have the ol' DVR set for next week's episode. I'll try to catch the first episode either on the website or On Demand if I get the chance. -
That's true. She definitely made it less sheer. I still loved it. And yes, pretty sure that was Michael. So maybe that's what he was going for with the high criss-cross in the straps of his nightie...bondage-wear...like I said, I would feel strangled in it.
-
All in all, I was pretty bored by this runway. I didn't think any of it was "fashion", none of it was anything I hadn't seen before, and there wasn't anything I would actually sleep in (I hate things on my legs and arms when I sleep, so generally just wear a short nightie or big t-shirt). That said, there were some pretty things, and some very nice lounge wear. The only things I loved were Batani's, which I thought would be great for a honeymoon or date night (but not to sleep in *ahem*), Kentaro's, which I thought was gorgeous, and Ayana's (so that's what modest girls wear behind closed doors, huh?). I liked Michael's, but hated that criss-cross strap up by the neck...I would feel strangled. So glad Kenya was safe; I just adore her and hated seeing her trying to hold back her tears. I actually didn't think hers was that bad before her model untied the robe, but when she did...oy. Agree that Aaron's and Deyonte's were awful. I defended them on this last week, and I still don't think it's cheating, but it is really annoying. I'm kind of tired of it, too. Actually, I don't really mind her giving a little feedback in the workroom, but I'm very tired of all the models talking to themselves in the mirrors. No, I still don't hate the twins either. The craziest part to me was that Aaron looked like it didn't even occur to him that it might not be an appropriate look for the runway until Zac commented on it, and then he was like "yeah, totally." I got a big laugh out of the potatoes on the table to make potato stamps. High end, indeed. I think someone even used them! I was so glad he didn't after the disasters of the last two weeks.

I wasn't going to watch this, because I didn’t want to give this scumbag any of my time, but I gave in and I've found myself kind of fascinated. I remember when it happened, and how it just grabbed the nation. I also remember the day Laci and Conner were found, and how I prayed it wasn't them before they were positively ID'd, but knew it was. About the day Scott was arrested...ok, I've been accused of being naive before, and I admit I can buy that he dyed his hair blonde for a bit of anonymity, and was using his brother's ID for a discount into the golf club, and that he was in San Diego to be with his family, but come on...who takes $10,000 out of their joint checking account (with their son), then gives it back in cash? And then, even if that did happen, wouldn't you put that money back immediately? Even naive me has a real hard time with that one. This show so wants to be Making A Murderer, doesn't it, and make the country question Scott's innocence? The biggest difference being that no one had heard of Steven Avery before Making a Murderer, whereas I don't know a single person of a certain age who doesn't know who Scott Peterson is and doesn't believe he's guilty. My biggest problem with the entire case is how he was tried in the media, which was becoming more of a phenomena with the advent of Court TV and the like after the OJ trial, and is such a huge problem today that I don’t see how anyone can get a fair trial. Doesn't make me think he's innocent, though, as much as this show may want me to think he is. I might, though, if it wasn’t for Amber, and the tapes.

Thanks @17wheatthins! -
So, I've had the book for a couple of months, and finally got around to reading it. I think my hesitation was that I'm really not a fan of Blake Crouch's writing style, after struggling through the Wayward Pines series. Anyway, back to Letty. The first story, wow. I totally didn't expect that ending. Damn, that was dark. Now I'm 1/2 way through the second story. I'm not having to force myself, like I did with Wayward Pines, but it's not a page turner. I don't think I have ever said this about a book v/s a movie or tv show before, but in the case of Blake Crouch, the book is NOT better, at least IMO. It's different, and much darker, but like I said, I'm not a fan of his style of writing.

October 15th, from what Google tells me. I'm really looking forward to season 2. But I really hope Letty finds a way to leave Jacob back with Estelle. I don't want to see her and Javier dragging a kid around.

Yes he did, several years ago. It was called Tyler's Ultimate, and that was the original concept, although I don't think he ever showed the "wrong" way to do something. I quite liked it in the beginning, when he was doing basic dishes, but IIRC, he started getting into things I had never heard of, so I lost interest. And I agree, I couldn't imagine Tyler Florence on ATK or CC. -
I find myself surprisingly upset by Mark's elimination tonight. Not because I'm especially fond of Mark, although I did enjoy him and his super-cute Mom, but because now we're left with 5 contemporary dancers and Kiki, which means next week, when ya'll get your wish and Kiki is finally eliminated, it will be an all-contemporary finale. Which it would probably have been anyway, but I was hoping for a little variety. Oh well. I don't have a particular fondness for Taylor, either, but I'd like her in the finale because I enjoy watching Robert. I hope Koine is in there, too, as she's my favorite, and Kiki, for the aforementioned variety. I don't really care who the 4th person is. My favorite part of the entire show was Cat's running around the stage in victory after Kiki and Jenna finished their routine without dropping any canes. Speaking of Cat...not many women could get away with wearing a sparkly knitted mini dress and french-braided pigtails, but she not only made it work, she looked great, IMO.

Impractical Jokers - General Discussion

I agree...I will get instantly irritated if I am sushed; I am not a child. I have a coworker who does it whenever someone says something she does not want to happen, like it will ward it off. Angers me every time, even when it's not aimed at me - I think it's so rude. How long does Murr have to wear that thing on his head? I saw the original episode, but I totally can't remember. Is he allowed to wash it? Because it's looking kind of ratty. -
Finally catching up on this show after noticing a few episodes on my DVR. It hasn't been on my "must watch list" for years (too much emphasis on annoying, over-the-top "characters"), so color me shocked when I (and my very cynical son) found ourselves laughing quite a bit during the episode), AND I recognized everyone except the Bachelor guy, which is a show I have never watched. Loved Melissa and Carson, loved Carson calling Ted, laughed my ass off at Carson's giant carrot on his plate next to his lamp and how he kept insisting his dish was seasoned (like he thought if he said it enough, Anne would start believing him) and how they made it look like Carmen just grated cheese for the entire first challenge...I was seriously confused as to where her lasagna came from when it appeared. I just really enjoyed it. I didn't even dislike Perez Hilton or Carmen as much as I thought I would, although I will be seriously disappointed if Carson doesn't shout "MURDERER" at her across the kitchen every time she has to cook shellfish...or any meat, really.

Yay Tate! So glad to see him win. When the judges dinged him for not really fulfilling the brief in round 2 I was afraid he was out...so relieved to be wrong. I loved his telling Ve that he wanted to prove to her that he could do a good paint job this time around. When Adolfo said his vampire spent all his time looking in the mirror, my first thought was "but vampires don't have reflections!" Just me? (No, my personal vampire mythology does NOT like to be challenged.) As a whole, I enjoyed this episode more than the first one, and agreed with the elimination order.

FINALLY! An interesting episode...and it only took 73 hours to get here... God, when the...anthropologist, was she...was telling us about his pelvis and his height and his musculature and his teeth I was like JUST GET ON WITH IT and then to find out they hadn't even done the DNA testing yet? *sigh* Wish we could have seen Jeff's face when he got the positive results. I'm sure he still believes his theories are true, though. Have to say I did enjoy the anthropologist's barely concealed tolerance of him at the grave site though (at least, it looked that way to me). Also, I found it amusing that they were shocked that he was shorter than reported. He would hardly be the first man in history who has lied about his height or lack thereof. *Shudder* I do have to give Amaryllis a little credit though. When they were reviewing all the "evidence", she had enough presence of mind to say that as compelling as it was (and admittedly, what they presented was compelling), she wasn't prepared to say he was definitely the Ripper. So good on her for not tanking all her credibility. Right? I was like "just let them do their job already". Although if he was the one footing the bill (which must have been pretty substantial), I guess he would be justified in thinking he could call the shots.
-
I don't have a lot to say about any of the clothes on this episode, except this: Aaron's...garment...was one of the ugliest things I've ever seen on this show and I can't believe Kentaro was on the bottom (only to get a light slap on the wrist) over that.

S08.E02: Battle for the South: New Marching Orders
Nessie replied to Whimsy's topic in The Great Food Truck Race [V]
Well...that didn't last long. My fondness for the Southern mama is gone. It was only because she reminded me of my grandma, I swear. I'm ashamed to admit that it's taken me this long to realize that she's not even from Kentucky. She's just so over the top, with her screaming about that other team parking near her, and wailing over losing her precious recipe out the window (why on earth would she have it near an open food truck window in the first place? Was she admiring it at stop lights?). Whatever...the sooner she is off my tv, the better. I'm actually torn if I want her or Mikey to go first, though. She's annoying, but OMG Mikey wears more makeup then just about any girl I know! This is probably going to sound shallow, but if I had a choice of food trucks, I'm probably not going to give my money to the one with they guy outside wearing lip gloss. About the empanada dough. A simple google search gave me a recipe that could be used immediately, with readily available ingredients. It was actually the very first one that came up. No reason to have to buy it frozen. -

Thanks @biakbiak. So interesting that he doesn't seem to be the cook on the truck.
